Maurice C. Haynes

MAPLE GROVE — Maurice Charles Haynes, 77, of Maple Grove, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at the Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with his family and his pastor at his side.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1925, in the town of Morris, the son of Verner Charles Haynes and Leatha (Sweet) Haynes.

He married Margaret O'Hara on June 23, 1949, a marriage of over 53 years.

He was a well known carpenter and painter in the Butternut Valley. He was a proud member of the River Street Baptist Church of Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Maple Grove; his children, Cindy Gilbert and companion Al Martin of Gilbertsville, and Tom Haynes and his wife, Donna of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Lila Swantak of South Kortright; his grandchildren, Tara Gilbert Finch and husband Bert of Mount Upton, Keri Gilbert of Charlotte, N.C., Kristyn Gilbert Ryan and husband Eric of Norwich, Alicia Haynes Smart and husband Jared of Dover; a great-grandson, Aiden Ryan of Norwich. Also his special friends, Toto and Pooch.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Angelia Haynes, who died in 1982.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. Funeral services will be on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer officiating.

Committal services and burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville, in the afternoon at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Angelia Haynes Memorial Fund, care of Cindy Gilbert, P.O. Box 237, Gilbertsville, NY 13776.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Philip W. Schulz

DAVENPORT CENTER — Philip W. "Pete" Schulz, 48 years of age, of Davenport Center, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 22, 1955, in Delhi, the son of Walter M. and Dorothy E. (O'Dell) Schulz.

Pete was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Charlotte Valley Central School, Davenport, the Class of 1973.

He worked doing farming, painting and rebuilding heavy equipment and more recently he operated a small engine repair shop out of his home in Davenport Center.

Pete enjoyed fishing, NASCAR racing, gardening and bread baking which he loved to share with his neighbors. He had a special interest in reading especially about airplanes and ships. Pete was a loving and caring gentleman and will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his parents, Walter M. and Dorothy E. Schulz of Davenport Center; one sister, Barbara Ann Romero of Medford, Long Island; two brothers, Walter E. Schulz of Davenport Center, and David J. Schulz of Munford, Tenn.; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services.

It has been requested, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pindars Corners Fire Department, State Highway 23, Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Philip W. "Pete" Schulz.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Dorothy VanDeusen

SCHENEVUS — Dorothy Lee VanDeusen, 70, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 10, 1933, in North Franklin, the daughter of Ford and Edith (Nimocks) VanBuren.

She married Gorden VanDeusen, who has predeceased her.

She was employed at US Care Systems in Oneonta as a home aide.

Survived by four sons, Edward VanDeusen of Tennessee, Gary VanDeusen of St. Petersburg, Fla., Phillip VanDeusen of Oneonta, and Gordie and his wife, Margaret VanDeusen, of South Hartwick; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Estella Trask of Schenevus and Edith Jester of Maryland; sisters-in-law, Ethel VanBuren, Marjorie VanBuren and Marie VanBuren; a brother-in-law, Roger Peck; many nieces and nephews; and a friend, Frances Beagel.

She was predeceased by a son, Thomas; brothers, Martin, Charles, Ford and Byron VanBuren; and sisters, Harriet Mitchell and Mildred Peck.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Sue L. Banks

WALTON — Sue L. Banks, 61, of Walton, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2003, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.

Sue was born in Potsdam, the daughter of Edward and Carol Simmonds Arquette.

On Feb. 14, 1963, Sue married William Banks in Walton. She was a homemaker lovingly taking care of her family. She enjoyed crocheting in her spare time. She had a heart of gold, always looking out for everyone else. She also especially enjoyed decorating her home during the Christmas season.

She is survived by her husband, William Banks; a son, William H. Banks and his fiance, Cheryl Kazalski of Walton; her mother, Carol Arquette, Walton; two grandchildren, Brian and Jimmy Kazalski; a brother, Richard Arquette of Salinas, Calif.; two sisters, Joan Springman of Highland Falls, and Cindy Calabrese of Trout Creek; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sue was predeceased by her father, Edward Arquette; and a sister, Lois Chapman.

Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Peggy Fabrizio, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Memorial contributions in Sue's memory may be made to American Heart Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Morton E. Burby

ONEONTA — Morton Edward Burby, of Oneonta, died on Oct. 7, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital with his wife by his side following a prolonged illness.

He was born in Albany on Jan. 9, 1935, to Albert and Marion Pierce Burby and was raised in the Capital District area.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force in 1956, he went on to get a degree in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Repair at Hudson Valley Community College.

While acting as president of an Albany ski club he met June Norton of Schenevus. They were married in September 1959. They went on to have four children, raising them on an old farm in Westerlo. Although raised in the city himself, Mort dearly loved the woods and fields, spending free time cutting firewood, searching the farm for antique bottles and playing with his family.

He loved dancing with his wife, swapping funny stories and making everyone laugh. An avid Yankees fan, his cheering no doubt helped win many close games.

He is survived by three sons: Stephen Paul and wife Liza of Huntington Station, Joseph Arthur and wife Leslie of Manhattan, and Michael Edward and wife Ruth Anne of Altamont; and one daughter, Rebecca Michelle and husband Albert Straubel III of Oneonta. He was the beloved grandfather of seven grandchildren.

A memorial to celebrate Mort's life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following terrific organizations: Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Oneonta Rescue Fund, 7981 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Richard L. Clayton

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Richard L. Clayton, 94, formerly of Williams Street, passed away on Oct. 6, 2003, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, as a result of injuries from an automobile accident.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1909, in Ilion, a son of the late Louis and Florence (Fish) Clayton.

A lifelong area resident, Clayton was an honorably discharged United States Army veteran of World War II.

On June 25, 1935, he married Hazel M. Chapin in East Springfield. They shared a loving and devoted union of 58 years until her passing on Jan. 8, 1993. He and his wife owned and operated the Birmingham Service Station and Restaurant on Route 20 and 51. In 1949, he purchased the Richfield Springs Mobile Station, retiring in 1972.

Dick was a quiet, gentle man who was admired and respected by the community. He will be greatly missed.

He was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting and for many years volunteered at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Clayton of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Nellie Clappsaddle of Cooperstown; one nephew, Bernard Chapin of Baldwinville.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nina French, in 2002.

A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in Fly Creek Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Richfield Springs Rescue Squad.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Charles Hellwege

HOBART — Charles Vincent Hellwege, 92, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at the Hearthstone Home for Adults in Hobart, where he had resided for close to six years.

He was born Aug. 12, 1911, in New York City, to Adele and Charles Hellwege.

He married Jeanne L. Loreen in 1946. He met her while at Fort Lewis in Washington State during World War II. His military unit served in the Pacific until the end of the war.

Mr. and Mrs. Hellwege lived in the Bronx and then in Peekskill.

Charles worked as a bus driver in the Bronx until his retirement in the mid 1970s. During retirement he and his wife took many enjoyable trips with the Lutheran Church in Yorktown Heights. He enjoyed bowling and gardening.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jon Campbell of Stamford; grandsons, Michael of Sendai, Japan, and Casey of Stamford; and his sister, Florence Louise Koentje of Long Island. He was Uncle Vinny to his nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife; his parents; and his sister, Edna.

Charlie's sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. Much thanks to the staff at the Hearthstone for the care and comfort they provided.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Hearthstone or the Hobart Emergency Squad.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Eugene P. Lemakos

TREADWELL — Eugene Peter Lemakos died Oct. 7, 2003, at home.

He was born Jan. 19, 1933, in New York City, the middle of three sons, to Peter and Catherine Lemakos.

Gene served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart for combat injuries received on Aug. 16, 1952.

He married Ruth Newman in New York City, on Feb. 28, 1954, and had four children before moving to Bogota, N.J., in 1967.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, VFW, and Order of the Purple Heart.

In July 1996, after retiring from security at the Port of Newark, N.J., Ruth and Gene moved to Treadwell, where he asked the Lord for two good years in the place that he loved and was granted seven.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years; son William and his wife, Denise, son James and his wife, Renee; daughter Jean and her husband, Dan Mazurek, and son Robert and his partner, Jeffrey Askildsen. Also surviving are brothers, William and Edward (Guy); and his greatest treasurers, grandsons Matthew and Peter.

Funeral from the Petrik Funeral Home, 140 Palisade Ave., Bogota, Friday morning at 9 a.m. Thence to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Bogota, where Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m.

Interment will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions to Delaware County Hospice, Oneonta, or the Treadwell Emergency Squad would be appreciated.
