Phillip A. Burchett

UNADILLA — Phillip A. Burchett passed away in his home 'Belknap House' Oct. 2, 2003, after a long illness of congestive heart disease and other complications.

He was born in New York City in Manhattan on April 6, 1911, and attended public school Styvascant, MIT, North Carolina Chapel Hill and received a degree in Chemical Engineering. His mother, Mildred, wanted him to attend West Point, he was rejected because of having glasses with triple vision. Standard Oil (Exxon chose him from school and he started in Aruba, West Indies and worked in NYC, Rockefeller Center as an investment analyst for the company.

After retiring he was an owner of a large yacht, chartering an operation in the Caribbean, and helped a many young men and women to sail to become captains, and had the Coast Guard certification until 1991.

In 1976 he restored the Kennedy Yacht, Greenwich, Conn., and was the only licensed Captain.

He left behind his only son, Charles and Barbara of Ft. Collins, Colo.; daughter, Ellen of Norwalk, Conn., both from a previous marriage; and was uncle of Bruce Wilcox of Chester, Pa., John Jr. Wilcox and families of Concord, N.H. He is survived and missed by his wife, Carla, for almost 27 years, trusted and protective friend; his energetic, enthusiastic sister-in-law, Ursula Schroeder of Martin Brook Road and NYC, Peter of Manhattan, Claus of California and families.

He wants to thank especially David Nichlos, brothers and friends for restoring the House and home, later on Larry Ryan for diligent and proper bids, that were right on target. When we bought the House in 1989, he thanks Mr. Ralph Van Loan for telling him to sell his old trucks, not to get fires on the back roads; the Village Variety, and family for buying all wooden ladders and paint, household goods and having lively discussions with Mr. Phelps, and all the courteous ladies behind the counter.

He was active in local Community Affairs, and loved Mary Birdsley on the Planning Board, and Paulette Judd on the Tree Committee. In 1990 he was appointed Parks Commissioner, and always wanted to take Bobby to Martin Brook Park and show him the beautiful waters. He wants to thank young Matt Tuttle for knowing so much about ferns even Christmas ferns!

Under the Dw. Greene Administration he was instrumental of getting a grant of $25,000 from the Parks, Recreation, to restore the upper Dam of Martin Brook Park, the Village crew and the bidder and architect did a wonderful job!

He loved placing trees into the grounds every April, with the young elementary school children, and having discussions with the principal, and wondered what these trees will be in 50 years hence, and who watered them in the summer and lilies.

He respected Mayor Edwin Frazier, when knocking on our door while still on the ZBA board and family, yes Phil could have been his dad, the Village Clerk Suzette for letting him make copies and for being so impeccably dressed. He was abruptly dismissed in 2001, he always said the parks should not be sold and littered with plastic and tins. "Disgrace is a terrible defeat and bad for my heart, darling Carla. "Be just to the poor and disabled and to the rich or volunteers who have the foresight for all the parks, for the people the young, and those who are carried in the wombs must be civil and honest to the earth."

He wants to thank all the people on the Parks Commission, especially Jean Carmichael, Catherine Hemmer who baked all the brownies, while walking through the Park and learning about birds and trees.

He wanted to give concerts near the waters, for he loved the blues and jazz. Everything we do or say, silence, gesture, movement either adds or subtracts from our lives, our community and our environment. He supports Congressman Boehlert whole heartily. Our eyes are the windows to the world, and to the new generation.

He wants to thank Terry Bliss of Waste Management, and Diana Carlton of Planning in Cooperstown, and all the lawyers that he met in the State of New York, and Harry Willis, and all his associates.

He hopes that the Otsego Rural Housing Assistance, Anthony Scalici director, will succeed in the Village of Unadilla to build beautiful apartments for the elderly, so that the former Bishop Hotel will not become a car lot, and parking lot for the town. He wanted to see benches along the Main Street, so people and the young learn of the former architecture. Above all, he wants to thank all the doctors from: Wen Chen in the Murray Hill area, in Manhattan who told him to go to a cardiologist to Pearl Street in Sidney, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Blaine Jones and James Wheeling, Barbara Murphy with the radiant smile and laughter in Sayre, Pa., the wonderful teaching Hospital in Albany particularly the nurses and hip doctor who wanted to operate. Least and not last Homepatient of Oneonta, Kim and Greg for having the oxygen concentrator for him.

He wants to thank veterinarians Jane and Kenneth Benson of Bainbridge, Chenango County for taking care of our red-dachsies, particularly Millie, Willie and Raechelle. He enjoyed the discussions, and always said, Carla don't interrupt. Millie still looks for him.

We want to thank the wonderful Village of Unadilla and all the counties on the Susquehanna River giving him the opportunity to serve at the end as Chairman of the ZBA. He really loved the village — he did his home-work. Thank you!

In his home, Sunday, Nov. 2, there will be a "Celebration of Life" from 11 a.m. to the evening. All are welcome! Young and old for he wanted to go home.
