Kermit Gregory

UNADILLA — Kermit Gregory, 83, a longtime Unadilla resident, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Kermit was an aircraft mechanic staff sergeant, serving three years with the 5th Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Before and after the war, Kermit worked for Bendix, Scintilla Division as a methods engineer, retiring after 36 years of service.

Kermit was active in the music business having sold organs to church organizations and the general public in the area for many years.

Kermit is survived by his wife, Wilhemina; five children, James and Linda Gregory of Schoharie, Ann and Sonny Tollette of Bixby, Okla., Thomas and Sue Gregory of Unadilla, David Gregory of Unadilla, and Jackie Gregory of Utica; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Kermit is also survived by a brother-in-law, Robert Deiss of Windsor; and a sister-in-law, Jean and Frank Williams of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

No calling hours or funeral service is scheduled.

Those wishing to pay their respects may stop at the Westcott Funeral Home, in Unadilla, on Saturday, from 2 to 5 p.m. and sign the memorial book.

Donations may be made in Kermit's memory to the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Marjorie Phoenix

SIDNEY CENTER — Marjorie E. Phoenix, 77, of Sidney Center passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at The Hospital, in Sidney.

She was born March 24, 1926, daughter of the late Ivan A. and Daisy (Ray) Bailey in Friendsville, Pa.

Marjorie was employed by Keith Clark in Sidney when she retired in 1988.

She attended the Sidney Center Baptist Church.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Thomas Phoenix, of Sidney Center; three daughters, Dona Phoenix of Minnesota, Darcy Phoenix and her husband, John Atkins of Campbell Hall, and Darleen Phoenix, of Wappingers Falls; and grandchildren, Seth Phoenix, Alexandria Reilly, Susan, Audrey, Aaron, Aaric, and his wife Jennifer.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral and committal services will be held Monday, Nov. 17, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney or the Sidney Center Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Janet V. Johnson

BAINBRIDGE — Janet Vail Johnson of Bainbridge passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born June 9, 1923, in Afton, the daughter of the late Carroll and Enna Hill Vail. Janet was a graduate of the Afton High School and the Rigley School of Business in Binghamton.

After completing her education, she was employed by the British government in Washington, D.C., during W.W.II. She returned to Binghamton as an X-ray technician and was employed by Binghamton General Hospital. Janet retired from the Bendix Corporation in 1982, where she was employed as a secretary in the marketing department.

She married E. Bernard (Ben) Johnson in Afton on May 12, 1946. They resided in the Unadilla and Bainbridge area for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Ben Johnson, of Bainbridge; her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Peter Feltham of Afton and their children Jake, Graham and Anna; five sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Teresa Johnson of Thomasville, N.C. and their daughter, Stephanie, Michael and Cindy Johnson of Bainbridge, James and Marge Johnson of Unadilla, and their children, Chuck and Michelle, Jerry and April Johnson of Unadilla and their son, Jeremy, Steve and Melba Johnson of Houston, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Carol Vail of Afton, Tom and Betty Vail of Afton; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Bob Giblin of Binghamton, a sister-in-law, Mildred Johnson of Sidney; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Ernest C. Johnson, predeceased her July 3, 1975.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral chapel with her family in attendance.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be private in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to The Hospital Foundation, 43 Pearl St., Sidney, NY 13838 or to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Harriette E. Slavin

OTEGO — Harriette E. Slavin, 92, of Main Street, Otego, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born July 17, 1911, in Walton, the daughter of Harry J. and Anna (McCann) Smith.

She was married to James E. Slavin on Sept. 2, 1955, in Cooperstown. He died Aug. 14, 1970.

In Harriette's earlier years, she was a night club singer and entertainer at the Oneonta Hotel and other area clubs. She had been a resident of Otego since 1957 and raised many birds, cats and dogs as she had a love for animals all her life. She was affectionately known as "The Bird Lady in Otego." She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

Harriette is survived by two sisters, Anna McAdams of Coopers town and Mrs. Philip (Joyce) Varbaro of Slocum, R.I. and two nephews. She is also survived by her close friends, Helen Beach, Audrey Dabulewicz, Nancy Fairgrieves, Teresa Sparaco and Paul Dabulewicz.

There will be no calling hours.

A Service to celebrate the life of Harriette E. Slavin will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla (Directly off Exit 10, off-88). The Rev. Gordon A. Polenz, of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Sidney, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers it is requested that memorial gifts be given to either the Delaware County Humane Society, 101 East Main St., Sidney, NY 13838, Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Otego Elderkin Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, NY 13825, in memory of Harriette E. Slavin.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Myrna J. Kazalski

AFTON — Myrna Jean Kazalski, 66, of Afton passed away at home on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003.

She was born in Sidney, to James and Hazel Bartlett on Nov. 30, 1936.

She worked for many years at the Borden Company in Bainbridge, retiring as production planning supervisor. Later she worked in the office at Afton Central School, Afton.

She was an avid Bainbridge-Guilford girls basketball fan and co-sponsored the Kazalski Girls Basketball Tournament each year with her husband, Joe.

She attended the East Guilford United Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jordan Kazalski; three sons, Michael and Linda Kazalski of Portsmouth, Va., William Kazalski of Sidney, and Joel and Donna Kazalski of Greene; four grandchildren, David Kazalski of Portsmouth, Va., James and Brian Kazalski of Sidney, and Leah Kazalski of Greene; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Audrey Bartlett; also several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be announced later.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Expressions of sympathy in her name may be made to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815, or to the B-G Girls Basketball program.

Funeral services are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Robert D. Bookhout

ONEONTA — Robert D. Bookhout, 53, of Oneonta, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born March 25, 1950, in Oneonta, to Robert and Wahneta (Crawford) Bookhout.

Mr. Bookhout was a life long area resident. A 1968 graduate of Oneonta High School, he was a 1972 graduate of Ithaca College.

Bob was an insurance broker for many years in Oneonta and Cooperstown and was vice president of the Bookhout Agency Inc., which was the family business. In recent years, he was a partner in the Bookhout and Bookhout Medical Billing Service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, BPOE 1312, Ducks Unlimited and the Oneonta Country Club. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Debra S. Bookhout of Oneonta; a son, Robert Michael Bookhout of Seal Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Catherine Bookhout of Norwalk, Conn.; his parents, of Oneonta; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Lynne of Chapel Hill, N.C., and a brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Pat Bookhout of Sidney Center; sister and brother-in-law, Allison Jay Bookhout and Bruce Van Holtz of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; his extended family and many friends.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Bob will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in Sidney Center.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Margaret W. Mapes

ONEONTA — Margaret W. Mapes, 91, of Oneonta passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 22, 1911, in Albany, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Hartman) Davis.

She married Ralph Deming Mapes on June 24, 1945, in Cambridge, Mass. He passed away on Nov. 15, 1977.

Mrs. Mapes was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Young at Heart Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, and was an avid painter. In every sense of the word, she was a true grandma.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Herbert Corey of Greene; a brother and two sisters, John Davis of Eagle Bridge, Bertha Weitzel of Lincoln, Neb., and Mary Harvey of Mount Vision; a son-in-law, Fredrick Bonker of Oneonta. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Pamela Cole and her husband, Chet, who gave her quality care for many years. Also surviving are many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy Bonker; a son, Dick Mapes; and a brother, Chuck Davis.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Parish Center, Walnut Street, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Henrietta Eden

TREADWELL — Henrietta Eden, 83, of Treadwell passed away on Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Harrison, S.D., the daughter of Henry and Adrianna (VandenBerg) Weerheim.

She married Vincent Eden in 1948, and he predeceased her in 1991.

For many years, retiring in 1983, Mrs. Eden worked as a cook in the A.L. Kellogg School in Treadwell.

She was a member of the Treadwell United Methodist Church, and was very active in the United Methodist Women's group. She also was a member of the AARP, and the Franklin Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Eden enjoyed gardening, cooking, and was well-known for her arts and crafts.

She is survived by her children, Edward and Ida Eden of Unadilla, and Donna Eden of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Justin Bartrow and Eve Marie Eden of Oneonta.

She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, and their spouses, Warren and Jeanne Weerheim of LaFayette, Howard and Helen Weerheim of Treadwell, Everett and Harriett Weerheim of Cypress, Calif., Lawrence and Claire Weerheim of Long Beach Haven, N.J., Earl Dean and Marilyn Weerheim of Palm Desert, Calif., Rosella and Raymond Gass of West Monroe, Margery and Robert Leisy of Gilboa, and Irene and Reggie Southwick of Waltersville, Ore.; as well as many nieces, and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Arlin Weerheim and Alida Warren.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. in the Treadwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

There will be no calling hours.

The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be directed towards the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
