Selden Ward

OGDENSBURG — The Rev. Selden H. Ward, 93, formerly of South Colton, passed away on May 5, 2004, at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, surrounded by loving family members.

He was born on April 26, 1911, in Oswegatchie, son of Charles and Lillian (Lansing) Ward. After graduation from high school, he attended Wheaton College in Illinois. He graduated in 1938 with a degree in theology and entered the ministry soon afterwards. He was later ordained as a Baptist minister in the American Baptist Convention. His ordination ceremony was held at the Canton Baptist Church where he was the pastor.

He married Naomi Drury on June 21, 1939, at the famous Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married for nearly 50 years until her death on Dec. 1, 1988. His love for New York State, especially the rural areas, was exceeded only by his love for his family. He dedicated much of his ministry to serving smaller parishes throughout central and upstate New York. His parishes included Parishville, South Colton, Colton, Canton, Hannawa Falls, Sandy Creek, Vorea, Watkins Glen, Altay, Lancaster, Clayton, Lisbon, and Madrid. He served in Methodist and Presbyterian, as well as Baptist churches. He was beloved by his parishioners. He always spoke fondly of the Oswegatchie Baptist Church which he called his "home church." After his retirement from active ministry he continued to minister to area people, performing baptisms, weddings and funerals until he was well into his 80s.

In addition to his churches, he worked second jobs at times, including truck driving, as an iron-ore underground miner and a school bus driver. He drove an Euclid dump truck for several years during the construction of the hydro-electric dams on the Raquette River.

He was always an avid sportsman. He loved to hunt and fish. He could swap hunting and fishing stories with the "best of them," including non-sportsmen sometimes. Diners were his favorite place to eat.

He is survived by his five children and their spouses: Donald and Arleen (Goodale) Edwards, of Canton, Bruce and Anne (Frey) Ward of Oneonta, Shirley and Paul Drury of Aurora, Ill., Stephen and Jane Ward, of South Colton, and Linda and James Caster of Ogdensburg; 16 grandchildren: Darlene and Robert Bowker of Port Crane, Denise and David Smart of Plano, Texas, Dawn and Philip Wolcott of Marathon, Dwayne Edwards of Jacksonville, Fla., Donalda and Thomas Goehring of Endicott, Mark and Marsha Ward of Sidney, Scott and Daphne Ward of Unadilla, Aimee and Thomas Vogel of Oneonta, Michelle Ward of Davenport Center, David and Tammy Dreves of Plano, Ill., Cheri and Eddie Campos of Texas, Sarah and Rodney Johnson of Texas, Debbie Frates of S.C., Brian and Julie Ward of Binghamton, Tina Caster of Fultonham, Jan Caster of Ogdensburg; as well as 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces; nephews; stepgrandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Ward of Oswegatchie.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Vincent, Leon, Dennis, Rupert, and Winston, as well as four sisters: Alma Marsh, Ethel Hubbard, and infant twin sisters, Vera and Verda.

It is impossible to know how many lives he touched in a positive way during his ministry, but he was always there in good times and bad for those who needed him. He will live on in countless memories.

Calling hours were held Sunday, May 9, at the Hawley Funeral Home in Star Lake.

The funeral service was Monday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Oswegatchie, with Pastor John Fetterhoff and guest Pastor Nora Jerzak officiating.

Burial followed in the Oswegatchie Cemetery.
