Christina Fusscas

ANDES — Christina Fusscas, 83, of Andes died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

She was born on March 12, 1921, in Mellahasori, Greece.

Christina married George Fusscas on July 24, 1952, in New York City. The couple moved to Andes in 1953.

Christina assisted her husband in the operation of Andel Inn in Andes. She also worked in the housekeeping department of Countryside Residential Care Center in Delhi for 13 years.

She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and cooking.

Christina is survived by her husband, George Fusscas, Andes; daughter, Ann Schultheis, Roxbury; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Tahirih Fusscas, Falls Church, Va., and James and Heather Fusscas, Walton; grandchildren, Nathan, Brian, Amanda, Lanora, Katie and Olivia; one brother in Greece; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating. Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in Andes.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury.

Florence K. Hall

ONEONTA — Florence K. Hall, 81, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Oct. 27, 1922, in Oneonta, the daughter of Samuel and Julia Ruby.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gerald William Hall, of Oneonta; her son, Gary W. Hall, and his wife, Joyce Ann Hall of Cape Coral, Fla.; her daughter, Penny Ann Hall of Rocky Point, Long Island; her sister, Pearl M. Dean, and her husband, Eugene "Bill" Dean of Scotia; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney E. Johnson, pastor of the Emmons United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Friday afternoon at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 2 until 4 p.m. and Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Emmons United Methodist Church, Emmons, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Lee J. Wentworth

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Lee J. Wentworth passed away Monday, May 10, 2004, in Worcester, Mass.

He was born Sept. 6, 1924, the son of Justice and Eva (Balcom) Wentworth.

He was married to Katherine Wentworth, who predeceased him; and Doris (Kelsey) Wentworth, who survives.

Mr. Wentworth served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was employed as a lineman for New York Telephone, Albany.

Survivors besides his wife, Doris Wentworth, include a son, Jason Wentworth of Cherry Valley; a niece, Deborah (Rasp) Payson of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a nephew, Ronald Prior of Saratoga Springs.

Graveside funeral services with military honors by the Navy will be held in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Kenneth E. Shuart

UNADILLA — Kenneth E. Shuart Sr. of Unadilla, formerly of Suffern, a veteran and retired truck driver, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at his home.

He was the beloved husband of June, also formerly of Suffern. He was the loving father of seven children, Judith Ann Branick, Kenneth E. Jr., Charles J., Keith W., Debra Irene Mensche, Kirstie Jayne Beers and William G. Shuart. He was the loving grandfather of 20, and the great-grandfather of five. He is also survived by a loving sister, Diane Shannon.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2004, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney, officiating.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Vicky L. Safford

ALBANY — Vicky L. Safford, 31, of Albany, formerly of Guilford, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at St. Peters Hospital, Albany, following a brief illness.

She was born March 31, 1973, in Sidney, the daughter of Thomas Sr. and Emma (Neidlinger) Safford. Vicky grew up in Guilford and went to Bainbridge-Guilford Schools. She graduated from Elmira College in 1995 and began a rewarding career at St. Anne's Institute in Albany. Vicky truly enjoyed her work with at-risk girls in the residential home.

She was a member of Emmaus United Methodist Church, Albany.

Vicky is survived by her parents, Thomas Sr. and Emma Safford, of Guilford; her brothers, Thomas Safford Jr. and Adam Safford, both of Guilford; her sisters, Melissa Safford of Norman, Okla., and Carrie Ann Safford of Guilford; paternal grandmother, Alta Cotton of Sidney Center; maternal grandfather, Otto Neidlinger of Bainbridge; a niece, Cassie Safford; a nephew, Tyler Cox; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Megan Safford.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Monday, June 14, 2004, from the Bainbridge United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Hipes, pastor of the church, officiating. Friends may call at the Bainbridge United Methodist Church, from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, prior to the service. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Guilford.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

John F. Cabales

DENVER — John F. Cabales, 80, of Denver passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

John was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Groton, Conn., the son of Ragino and Florence (Walsh) Cabales.

He married Marilyn Hansen on Sept. 26, 1976, on Long Island.

He served in the United States Marines from Nov. 6, 1942, to Dec. 8, 1945.

John worked on tugboats in New York City, and also worked on construction jobs. Later he became a nursing aide at Central Islip State Hospital in Central Islip, Long Island.

John was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, the Sacred Heart Parish, Margaretville. He was an avid outdoor person, enjoying fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Cabales, Denver; one son, John K. Cabales; four daughters, Delores Betroff, Christine Cabales, Patricia Teister and Linda Cabales; stepson, Steven Tillis; two brothers, Lawrence Salacup and Harold Cabales; and sister, Marianna Sherman. He is also survived by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Linda Serrano.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt, as celebrant. Burial will be in Bedell Cemetery in Fleischmanns.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Mark A. Parsons

NEW BERLIN — Mark A. Parsons, 46, of New Berlin died unexpectedly Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Born Jan. 12, 1958, in Maryland, he was a son of Henry and Gertrude Milius Parsons.

He was a graduate of Brooksville Trade School in Brooksville, Fla. Mark was a telecommunications technician who had worked at several area companies, including ADC for many years, and most recently for Raize Solutions in the Albany area. He was a member of the Eagles Club.

Surviving are his longtime loving companion, Cynthia Brazee; his father, Henry Parsons, of Springhill, Fla.; brother, Roger Parsons, of Springhill, Fla.; Cynthia's family, including her mother, Eleanor Johnson of Earlville; daughter, Denise Brazee, and her companion, Tim Thompson of Burlington Flats; grandchildren, Alexis Brazee and Cicelia Thompson; sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Anthony Cappadonia of Earlville; and many, many friends.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2004, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in the Earlville Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Pittsfield Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Grace M. Burrows

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Grace Mary Burrows, 82, of Zephyrhills, died on June 2, 2004, at home after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Oneonta, the daughter of Angelo and Raffaela (Dragone) Laterra.

Mrs. Burrows was a Zephyrhills resident for more than 50 years. She worked as a secretary and financial clerk for several local businesses. She volunteered her time to support the local Little League organization.

Mrs. Burrows is survived by her sister, Edith Armstrong of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Freda Laterra of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Burrows; two brothers, Salvatore and Carl Laterra; and a sister, Josephine Laterra.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at Hodges Funeral Home in Zephyrhills.

Those who wish to make a contribution in her memory may do so to the Zephyrhills Hospice or the American Heart Association.

Alexander Magyar

SOUTH VALLEY — Mr. Alexander Paul Magyar, 43, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born July 14, 1960, in Bridgeport, Conn., the son of Ernest A. and Helen (Skudlarck) Magyar.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Magyar; and three sons, Matthew, Jonathan and Alexander, all of South Valley; and good friends, Steve and Cathy of Connecticut.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Assembly of God Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Rick Yerdon officiating. Burial will follow in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Magyar's memory may be made to Alexander Magyar Fund, care of Assembly of God Church, PO Box 524, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Dorothy Yeoman

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — A graveside service with military honors for Dorothy M. Yeoman (nee Perrone), 81, who died on Jan. 29, 2004, will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 2 p.m. in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Dixon Bartle, Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, officiating. Everyone is invited to attend.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Nicholas J. Alicino

COOPERSTOWN — There will be a gathering to celebrate the life of Nicholas J. Alicino, who passed away on March 10, 2004. All are invited to attend at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Glimmerglass Opera House in Cooperstown.

Gerald W. Laing

FRANKLIN — Gerald W. Laing, 71, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born June 8, 1933, in the town of Meredith, the son of the late John M. and Anna G. (White) Laing.

He was first married to Ruth Brink and in 1982 he was married to Mary E. Koury.

Gerald was a graduate of the Franklin Central School Class of 1951 and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force. From 1963 to 1975 he owned and operated a plumbing and heating business in Franklin. From 1975 to 1995, he was employed as supervisor of the heating plant at the State University College of Technology at Delhi.

He was a former Franklin fire chief, a charter member of the Franklin Emergency Squad, member of the Franklin American Legion Post No. 1689, former commander and adjunct of the Delaware County American Legion, former member of the Franklin Rotary Club, a former member of the Tumbleweed Band, former leader of the Jerry Laing Orchestra, member of the Franklin Historical Society and current president of the Ouleout Valley Cemetery Association, Franklin.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Mary E. Laing, of Franklin; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Marleen Laing, of Franklin and Gerald Jr. and Allecia Laing, of Franklin; his daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Douglas Knox, of Franklin; a grandson and his wife, Daniel and Laura Nightingale, of Clay; and a granddaughter, Amber W. Knox, of Franklin. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Ella May Laing, of Apple Valley, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Viola Laing, of Delhi; his stepchildren, Antonette Langellotti, of Davenport Center, Lisa Langellotti, of Milford, and Gina and Otilio Gonzalez, of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his grandsons, Jared and Garrett Knox, his brother, John, and his sister, Virginia.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main Street, Unadilla, Monday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Franklin, with the Rev. Michael J. Shank, Vicar, officiating.

Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Peter J. Tomlin

OXFORD — Peter J. Tomlin, 94, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born Aug. 22, 1909, to Lithuanian immigrants, Martin and Anna (Zenkus) Tamilus in Benld, Ill.

Peter attended school in Benld before going to work in the coal mines. He moved to New York in 1932 and worked various jobs including the Delaware County Highway Department, L.P. Butts and West Nesbitt Feed Store.

He married Ruth J. Driggs on Nov. 19, 1941. They resided in Oneonta until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 for WWII.

Peter was stationed at Truax Field in Madison, Wis., and was later transferred to Geiger Field in Spokane, Wash. He was honorably discharged in 1945 in Sioux Falls, S.D. After being discharged, Peter went to work for Chicago Northwestern Railroad where he worked until he retired in 1973.

Mr. Tomlin and his family made their homes in Beloit, Wis., and South Beloit, Ill., before moving to Sidney in 1991.

He was a 35-year member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in South Beloit, Ill., and a 13-year communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney.

Peter is survived by his daughter, Lillian F. Johnson, of Sidney Center; five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many friends in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, on Oct. 28, 1993, as well as two brothers, one sister and one grandson.

Friends may call Tuesday, June 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel 21 Main St., Sidney.

James M. Keogh

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — James M. Keogh, of New Port Richey, Fla., and Oneonta, a retired railroad conductor for the Delaware & Hudson Line, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Alexandria, La. He was 77.

James was born in Oneonta on April 2, 1927, the son of the late James and Lueloa Hoover Keogh. James was a Marine Corps veteran of WWII.

James is survived by his wife, Doris Weismantel Keogh, of New Port Richey; two daughters, Maretta Day and her husband Robert, of Lutz, Fla. and Dorothy Armstead of Memphis, Tenn., four sons, Pat Keogh and his wife Sharon of Lake Mary, Fla., James Keogh of New Port Richey, Michael Keogh and his wife Terry, of Chandler, Ariz. and William Keogh and his wife Nancy, of Unadilla; one sister, Marion Redman, of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at Trinity Memorial Gardens, New Port Richey.
