Donald R. Dickman

MARGARETVILLE — Donald R. Dickman, 83, of Margaretville passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Donald was born on Aug. 12, 1920, in Margaretville, the son of Robert Dickman and Elizabeth McLean.

He married Phyllis Bellows on May 12, 1946, in Margaretville.

Donald attended grade school at Dingle Hill and Old Stone School House. He graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1938.

He served in the United States Army Air Force for 3 1/2 years, 1942-1945, during World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge and served with the 2nd Photo Group.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 216, Margaretville, for more than 50 years.

Donald owned a service station and a sand and gravel bank in Dunraven for 18 years. He owned the Margaretville Lumber Yard for 23 years. After retirement, he worked part-time for Archers Lumber Company in Roxbury.

He was an avid reader and liked history, local and worldwide. He enjoyed the outdoors.

Donald is survived by his wife, Phyllis Dickman, Margaretville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Miller (the Rev. David Bugler), Cobleskill, Susan (Michael) Conine, Morrisonville, and Myra Dickman, Cohoes; one son, Robert Dickman, Frisco, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Gilbert Dickman.

A funeral and committal service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, with the Rev. David Bugler officiating in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, with military honors.

Contributions in Donald’s memory can be made to the Fairview Library, Margaretville, or to the American Legion Post No. 216, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Harriette Lee

OWEGO — Harriette Maude Goodrich Lee, 86, of Owego passed away Friday, July 30, 2004.

Harriette was born April 10, 1918, in Tioga Center, the youngest of seven children to the late Ella Maude Wheaton and M. Delos Goodrich.

As a graduate of Hartwick College, she taught English in the Arcade and Allegany school districts for a short time until her marriage of 60 years to her lifetime soulmate and heartbeat, Edward Belmont Lee, who predeceased her on March 22, 2004.

While residing on Main Street in Owego, they worked side by side in their family dental practice for the next 35 years. It was during that time they lovingly raised their three daughters and were involved in the community, and the Owego United Methodist Church.

Harriette was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 519, Owego Lioness, a Girl Scout of America leader and taught Sunday school for many years.

In their retirement, they moved to Mountain View Park, Owego. Harriette was well-known for her quick wit and "Goodrich" humor, her recitations of poetry and Shakespeare and her soft spoken gentle manner. She was at all times "a lady of refinement."

She has called Ideal Nursing Center of Endicott her home since 1999, where she won the hearts of all who cared for her.

Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Ideal for their attentive and loving care.

Harriette is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Marian (James) MacFarlane, Batavia, Margaret (Michael) Welsh, Cooperstown, Barbara (Gerald) Crampton, Johnson City; as well as four grandchildren, Ada Lee MacFarlane, Sarah Good, Lester and John Crampton. Also surviving are two sisters, Mabel Lena Robinson, Owego, and Margaret Pitcher, Allegany; sister-in-law, Harriette Goodrich; and her many special nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Hiram Goodrich (Tioga Center), Irving Goodrich (Watkins Glen), Wilfred Goodrich (Odessa), and a sister, Zeruah Potter (Allegany), and her grandson, Jared Good.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Richards Funeral Home, Route 17c West, Owego, with the Rev. Herbert Bowen, pastor of the West Corners United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Nondaga Cemetery, Bath.

Friends are invited to call at Richards Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.

Those who wish to remember Harriette may make a memorial contribution in her name to the Jared Thomas Good Memorial Fund, care of Dr. Ran Anbar, Director Cystic Fibrosis Center, University Hospital, 750 E. Adams St., Syracuse, NY 13210, which was established in memory of her grandson to benefit patients and family’s of children with cystic fibrosis.

Vincent Cuozzo

BAINBRIDGE — Vincent Cuozzo, 66, of Valley View Road, Bainbridge, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

He was born June 28, 1938, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Vincent J. and Bianca Albanese Cuozzo.

On Feb. 2, 1969, he married Kathryn Davis in Bainbridge.

Vincent owned and operated Flash Transmission and Air Conditioning on Route 8, Bainbridge.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kathy Cuozzo of Bainbridge; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Amy Cuozzo of Guilford; six daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne Cornell and Ray Blythe of Richmond, Va., Amy Lynn and Mark Solazzo of Somers, Tina Bryden and Timothy Barnes of Sidney, Kelly and Michael Walters of Unadilla, Kathy and Glen Ayres of Sidney, and Kim Cuozzo and Michael Manley of Guilford; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ralph and Josephine Cuozzo of Sidney Center and Charles Cuozzo of Virginia; two sisters, Marie Whittaker of Georgia and Beatrice MacArthur of Sidney. Vincent is also survived by 15 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A grandson, Zachary Mark Solazzo, predeceased his grandfather.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel with his family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Tri- Town Boys and Girls Club, care of The Civic Center, Pleasant Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

J. Michael Funke

DeLANCEY — Johannes Michael Funke, 51, formerly of DeLancey, passed away suddenly, following a coronary attack on Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Binghamton.

The son of Karl R. and Gertrud (Rudolph) Funke, he was born June 25, 1953, in Meissen, East Germany, coming to New York in 1958.

Michael grew up on the family farm in Terry Clove, DeLancey, was a graduate of Downsville Central School, continued his education at the State University College at Oneonta and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon).

Disabled for many years, he had been residing in Binghamton since 1977.

Surviving are his mother, Gertrud R. Funke of Salt Lake City, Utah; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, in the Hamden Cemetery. Elder Herbert Baldauf, branch president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) in Delhi, will officiate, and burial will follow.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Louis R. Buzzeo

BLOOMVILLE — Louis R. Buzzeo, 74, of Bloomville passed away July 30, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Michael Cournoyer of Sacred Heart Church officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Edna H. McManus

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Edna H. McManus, formerly of Cooperstown, who passed away Jan. 17, 2004, in Ocala, Fla., will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Fly Creek Cemetery, with Pastor Ed Potter officiating.

Vincent Cuozzo

BAINBRIDGE — Vincent Cuozzo, 66, of Valley View Road, Bainbridge, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

Harold E. Fletcher

TROUT CREEK — Harold E. (Satch) Fletcher, 76, of 21 Reynolds Road, passed away on Aug. 2, 2004, with family members in attendance, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born July 20, 1928, in Conesville, the son of Harry and Alice Reynolds Fletcher.

He served in the United States Navy.

He was known and loved by many friends in the area.

Satch retired from the town of Tompkins after 25 years of service. He was a dedicated charter member of the Trout Creek Fire Department, having served as chief. He was an active member of the Central New York Fireman’s Association and the New York State Fireman’s Association. He was a member of the Trout Creek American Legion Post 1554 since 1946, and has served as commander.

Harold is survived by his wife of 54 years, Grace Green Fletcher; one sister, Elizabeth Grant of Gilboa; two daughters, Linda McKeoun of Salt Lake City and Nancy Gould of Yancyville, N.C.; two sons, Donald Fletcher of Norwich and Ronald Fletcher of Trout Creek; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, Tuesday evening, Aug. 3, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m., with a fireman’s service at 8 p.m.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David Gatje of the Trout Creek Community Church officiating. Interment will be held in the Carroll Cemetery, Trout Creek.

Memorial donations may be made to Trout Creek Fire Department or the Trout Creek Emergency Squad.

Barbara Wilder

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Barbara Wilder died July 28, 2004, in La Jolla, Calif. She was 79 years old.

Barbara Mae Fluker was born in Guatemala on Dec. 2, 1924, to James Calhoun Fluker and Mattile Sibley Fluker. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Calhoun Fluker Jr.

Barbara spent her childhood in Canada and Kentucky before moving with her family to Newton, Mass., as a teenager. While in Newton she attended Newton High School and Brimmer and May.

She began her college education at Smith and graduated from Wheelock College. Following graduation, she taught kindergarten and first grade at the Dedham Country Day School.

Barbara Fluker and Philip Sawyer Wilder Jr. were married on June 31, 1947, in Waban, Mass.

In 1949, the couple moved to Crawfordsville, Ind., where Mr. Wilder was on the faculty of Wabash College.

In addition to raising a family, Mrs. Wilder was involved with the Girl Scouts, PTA, the faculty wives, and the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church.

In 1968, the family moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where Mr. Wilder helped develop the new California State College at Bakersfield. Mrs. Wilder continued to be involved with community activities and enjoyed playing tennis.

In 1978, Mr. and Mrs. Wilder left California for Oneonta. There Mr. Wilder served as the president of Hartwick College and Mrs. Wilder was a very involved president’s wife. She was later recognized by the college with an honorary doctorate.

Upon retirement, the couple moved to Cooperstown, and then later to the White Sands of La Jolla in La Jolla.

Mrs. Wilder is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years. Also surviving are daughters Anne Fulmer of Visalia, Calif., Trish Collins of Encinitas, Calif., and Nancy Watson of Seattle, Wash. Mrs. Wilder leaves behind five granddaughters; as well as nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the White Sands of La Jolla Chapel in La Jolla.

Kathleen Ernst

ROSWELL, Ga. — Kathleen Alys (McLaud Spisak) Ernst, 52, of Roswell, Ga., formerly from Otego, entered into rest peacefully on Friday, July 30, 2004, at Hospice House of Hope, Grand Rapids, Mich.

Born in Oneonta on Nov. 8, 1951, she was the daughter of Douglas and Joan McLaud.

Kathleen attended Bugbee School in Oneonta, Unatego in Otego and Albany Medical Center Nursing School.

She married Robert Spisak of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Sept. 11, 1971. They had two girls, Stephanie and Suzy.

She was a wonderful massage therapist and gifted healer who touched many lives in a special way, always ready and willing to give to others. She was a free spirit and loved life. Later she married Herb Ernst of Otego. She was deeply loved by her entire family and many friends from all over the United States.

Survivors include her grandmother, Mrs. Stewart Crandall of Saratoga Springs, formerly of Laurens; her mother, Joan McLaud of Norwich; beloved girls, Stephanie Henkle of Woodstock, Ga., Suzi Moutinho and her husband, Tom, of Dacula, Ga.; her loving grandchildren, Korey and Kasey Henkle of Woodstock, Ga., and Fiona Moutinho of Dacula; one brother, Douglas McLaud and wife, Polly, of Springhill, Fla.; three sisters, Leslie Jordan and husband, Jack, of Buffalo Gap, S.D., Susan VanCott and husband, Craig, of Unadilla, and Mary McLaud of Southwest Harbor, Maine; and several aunts, uncles and nieces, nephews and loving family members.

Her father, Douglas McLaud of Otego, predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours or service at the request of Kathleen.

F. Newton Cooper

COOPERSTOWN — The Rev. F. Newton Cooper, 91, of Cooperstown and Waverly, and formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. He died peacefully at his home in Waverly, surrounded by his loving family.

Rev. Cooper was born Feb. 21, 1913, in the Cooperstown area, the son of Floyd N. and Sara J. Cooper.

He married Elinore Walrath in the United Methodist Church in Cooperstown on Aug. 17, 1943. Elinore predeceased him on March 17, 1995.

He is survived by his son, Floyd N. Cooper Jr. of Palm Harbor, Fla.; his son, Robert Cooper of New Port Richey, Fla., and Waverly, his son, William W. Cooper and his wife, Sue, of Ashland City, Tenn.; and by his daughter, Dorothy E. Warner and her husband, Lee, of Waverly. Rev. Cooper is also survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Cooper of Seattle, Wash., the wife of his late brother, A. Lee Cooper; his sister-in-law, Gladys Walrath of Ilion, and his beloved grandchildren, Lisa Vanderhoof and her husband, John; Amy Stotler and her husband, Greg; John Cooper and his wife, Tasha; Paul Cooper and his wife; Mark Cooper; and two stepgrandchildren, Dr. John Hammons, and Clinton Hammons as well as by six equally beloved great-grandchildren, Ciara, Trevor and Ethen Stotler, and Victoria, Andrew and Riley Cooper. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James W. Cooper, A. Lee Cooper, Russell Cooper and Leon P. Cooper, as well as by his sister, Flora (Cooper) Olmstead.

Rev. Cooper was a 1935 graduate of Cooperstown High School and a 1936 graduate of Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School in Kingston, Pa. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta in 1940 and his master of divinity degree from Drew University School of Theology in Madison, N.J., in 1943.

Rev. Cooper was a certified high school English teacher as well as an ordained United Methodist minister, and in keeping with Methodist tradition, served many different congregations until his retirement in 1980. Among the many congregations he served were Sanitaria Springs, Edmeston, Castle Creek, Westover/Johnson City, Newark Valley, Nichols/Lounsberry, in New York and Sayre, Dunmore, Carbondale and German in Pennsylvania. He also served as an interim pastor in Cooperstown and Schulyer Lake.

In addition to his ministerial duties, Rev. Cooper served on numerous boards and agencies throughout the Methodist Wyoming Conference.

Rev. Cooper was an avid gardener, taking great pleasure in each of the Lord’s many creations. He loved to read and camp, and took his family on numerous camping excursions. He took great pleasure in and particularly enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the Waverly area from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Lowery Funeral Home in Athens, Pa.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Herbert Bowen and the Rev. Sundar Samuel co-officiating. The family will receive friends in the Cooperstown area at the Methodist Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Jean L. Pearce

DELHI — Jean L. Pearce, 70, of Delhi passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born Sept. 4, 1933, in Andes, the daughter of William C. and Addie (Sanford) Laughman.

She married Aubrey D. Pearce on Nov. 18, 1961, in Delhi. He predeceased her on Jan. 26, 1999.

Mrs. Pearce was a Delhi resident for 42 years. She graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1951 and from SUNY Delhi in 1952.

Before her marriage, she operated a dairy farm with her brother and sister in New Kingston. She helped her late husband with his butter and egg business. For several years, she wrote the West Delhi news for The Walton Reporter and Delhi newspaper.

Jean enjoyed tatting, embroidery, crocheting, sewing and baking, especially bread and rolls, and gardening.

Her daughters, Linda J. Pearce, Lorna L. Pearce and Barbara E. Pearce, all of Delhi; a brother, William Laughman of Margaretville; and a niece and her family, Ruth, Robert, Vanessa and Ryan Oravetz of Margaretville; and several nephews, nieces and cousins survive.

A sister, Marian Laughman predeceased her on Feb. 18, 1992.

Memorial services will take place on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister of the Andes Presbyterian Church officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will follow the service in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Delaware County Humane Society or the Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
