Minnie P. Briggs

ONEONTA — Mrs. Minnie P. Briggs, 84, of Oneonta died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Hampshire House Adult Home, Oneonta.

She was born April 23, 1920, in Denmark, the daughter of Peder and Kirstine (Nielsen) Pedersen. She came to the United States with her family at age 2.

Minnie graduated from Oneonta Normal School in 1938.

She married Frank E. Briggs on March 23, 1940, in Gilbertsville. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Davenport. In 1978, they sold their farm and moved to their new home on Franklin Mountain. Mr. Briggs predeceased Minnie on Feb. 24, 1984.

Minnie was well-known as a skilled seamstress, and she enjoyed needlework and crafts. For many years she attended local craft shows as a vendor.

Minnie was a 4-H leader for many years, a former member of the East Meredith Arts and Crafts Club, a 15-year volunteer at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital and also served on the Board of Elections for the town of Davenport.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her four daughters, Alyce Cole (Roger Champlin) of Harpersfield, Kay (John) Cronk of Oneonta, Marj (Keith) Bull of Oneonta, and Bette Shaw (Jesse Cochrane) of Delhi; her eight grandchildren, Frank (Ann) Cole, Florida, Jim (Shelly) Cole, Burlington Flats, John (Wanda) Cole, Davenport, Dennise Bright, Grand Gorge, Tina (Vincent) VanVorst, Edmeston, Mike Bull, Florida, Shane Bull, North Carolina, and Natalee (John) Denard, Connecticut. Minnie is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Ethel Pedersen of Sidney; her sisters-in-law, Beulah Byam of Florida and Mary Briggs of Davenport Center; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Minnie was predeceased by her grandson, Jeff Cronk on Feb. 16, 1984. A granddaughter, Kristine Shaw, died on Aug. 8, 2004.

A service to celebrate the life of Minnie P. Briggs will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Clemow, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith.

Calling hours will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the Hampshire House Adult Home, care of The Library Fund, 1846 County Highway 48, Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Minnie P. Briggs.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Laurel H. Murphy

COOPERSTOWN — "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8.

The loving and gentle spirit of Laurel Hayes Murphy passed from this life unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Delhi. She was 21.

Born on Oct. 12, 1982, in Sharon, Conn., she moved to the Cooperstown area at age 5.

A graduate of Cooperstown High School, Class of 2001, she attended the State University of New York College of Technology at Delhi, and received an associate’s degree earlier this year.

Laurel loved listening to music and sharing time with her family and friends. She was loved by all and will be sorely missed.

Laurel is survived by her mother, Nancy Kelly, and Nancy’s fiance, Henry Krewat of Cooperstown; her father, Brian F. Murphy and his wife, Amy, of Amenia; her brother, Brian J. Murphy of Amenia; her sister, Kimberly Murphy of Bremerton, Wash.; her paternal grandparents, Charlotte and James Murphy of Amenia; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Randall of Stony Brook; and many, many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Joseph Randall.

In her youth, Laurel was confirmed into the Episcopal faith in Christ Church, Cooperstown. So it was fitting that on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 7, 2004, Laurel’s family and friends filled the sanctuary of Christ Church where a service in memory of Laurel’s life was held, with the Rev. Samuel B. Abbott, rector, officiating.

Those present then gathered for a time of remembrance and fellowship in the Parish Hall of Christ Church.

Laurel will eventually be laid to rest in the Columbarium Wall in the Churchyard at Christ Church.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial gifts to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

Arrangements were under the direction of Connell, Dow & Deysenroth, funeral directors, in Cooperstown.

Mary K. D. Barmes

COOPERSTOWN — Mary Kallan Domion Barmes, 95, formerly of Hartwick, died early Friday morning, Aug. 6, 2004, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1908, in Yugoslavia, a daughter of Michael and Anna (Kerznarich) Kallan.

She was previously married to August S. Domion, who died on Jan. 1, 1953.

In her youth she emigrated from Yugoslavia to the United States, and settled with her family in the Hartwick area where she attended a rural district school. She devoted much of her life to caring for her family and their farm.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, and the Hartwick Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Bullock of Greene; one son, Joseph F. Domion and his wife, Diane, of Hartwick; two grandchildren, Melanie Renner-Gates and her husband, George, and Brian Domion and his wife, Donna; and twin great-grandsons, Joseph and William.

She was predeceased by an infant son who died in the early 1930s, one sister, Katherine Domion, who died in the early 1940s, and one son-in-law, Ronald Bullock who died June 10, 2002.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. The Rite of Committal and Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index. Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Eleanor McGinnis

WEST WINFIELD — Eleanor Smyder McGinnis, 86, passed away, July 29, 2004.

A memorial Mass for Eleanor will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Saint Joseph’s Church, West Winfield.

Memorial donations may be directed to West Winfield Fire Department and Ambulance Service.

Arrangements are in care of Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield.

Virginia A. Goedel

DELHI — Virginia Ann "Ginnie" Goedel, 58, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 9, 2004, at her home.

The daughter of Arnold W. and Dorothy G. (Staples) Greene, she was born March 6, 1946, in Delhi, grew up in Shinhopple, was a 1964 graduate of Downsville Central School and married Henry R. Goedel on Dec. 19, 1992, in Bovina Center.

A homemaker who was devoted to her family and friends, "Ginnie" spent most of her adult life in Bovina, where she was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, moving to the Delhi-Meredith area four years ago.

Surviving are her husband, Henry R. "Hank" Goedel; two daughters, Renee Renner of Oneonta and Michelle (Timothy) McKenzie and children, Julia and Garren, of Shrewsbury, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Linda Kaye (James) Ballentine and son, Kenton, of Tecumseh, Mich.; stepson, Randall (Danielle) Goedel and son, Benjamin, of Killeen, Texas; three sisters, SuAnne Cox of Winter Springs, Fla., Mary Carknard of Johnsonville, and Barbara Goodrow of Rincon, Ga.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Greene.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Bovina U.P. Church with the Rev. Scott Conrad officiating. Burial will be in the Bovina Cemetery with a reception following at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Leonard A. Wheeler

SOMERS, Conn. — Leonard A. "Sonny" Wheeler Jr., 78, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, a resident of Somers, Conn., after a brief illness.

Born in Oneonta, Sonny was the son of the late Leonard A. Wheeler and Lillian (Hughes) Wheeler.

He attended Oneonta High School until joining the United States Army, serving first in World War II in the Pacific Theatre and later in the Korean War.

Sonny was a retired plastics engineer and a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Sonny is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen L. (Warner) Wheeler; his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Lorri Wheeler of Springfield, Mass.; his daughter, Laurie Wheeler of Springfield, his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ted Sheiber of Suffield, Conn., and his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Scott Cervonayco of Westfield, Mass. Sonny is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Burrell and Carolee Wheeler of Morris, Jesse and Ruth Wheeler of South Kortright, and Richard Wheeler of Mount Vision; and by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and Oren Knapp and Nancy Angellotti of Oneonta, and Joan and Douglas Bush of Mount Vision. Sonny is survived by six grandchildren, Ryan, Amy and Andrew Wheeler, Ethan Sheiber, Abigail and Katherine Cervonayco; a great-grandson, Zachery Toper; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Somers.

In lieu of flowers, the Wheeler family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Research Parkway, Meriden, CT 06450.

John E. McCartney

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mr. John E. ("Jack") McCartney Jr., 55, of Richfield Springs died unexpectedly Sunday evening, Aug. 8, 2004, as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Jack was born Dec. 12, 1948, in the Borough of Queens, a son of John E. and Regina (Stanis) McCartney.

He married Cynthia Coffrini on April 20, 1980, in Queens.

Raised in Queens, Jack graduated from the Mater Christi High School and later graduated from New York University.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Jack honorably served his country from 1968 until 1972.

Jack moved to the Cooperstown area in 1982 and had been a resident of Richfield Springs since 1990.

For the past 22 years, he had been employed by Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown and, for the past 10 years, was their MRI coordinator and chief technician.

Jack was a member of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown and was a former member of the Cooperstown Fire Department, Mechanics’ Hook and Ladder Company No. 5.

At one time, he had been active in the Cooperstown Boy Scouts and area golf leagues. He enjoyed the companionship of his dog Lucky, who was with him at the time of the accident and is still missing.

He is survived by his mother, Regina McCartney, of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.; his former wife, Cynthia McCartney of Milford; two sons, James L. McCartney of Fly Creek and Michael J. McCartney of Elma; six sisters, Victoria Frohnhoefer, JoAnne Ziegler and Regina Langner of Queens, Jeanine Tancredi of Staten Island, Diane Ayala of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Eileen Canning of Mineola. Also surviving are three brothers, Daniel T. McCartney of Oak Ridge, N.J., Richard E. McCartney of Blauvelt, N.J., and Thomas F. McCartney of Queens; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, when Jack’s family will be in attendance.

A memorial service will be held locally 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, in the Clark Auditorium at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, pastoral care coordinator, officiating.

In New Jersey, Jack’s family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at the Stephen J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service, 60 North Beverwyck Road, Lake Hiawatha, N.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Parsippany.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown and the Stephen J. Priola Parsippany Funeral Service in New Jersey.

Velma W. Berger

ROCHESTER — Velma W. Berger, 92, of Rochester, formerly of Unadilla, passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at the Arbor Hill Care Center, Rochester.

She was born Sept. 13, 1911, in Endicott, the daughter of Harry and Elva (Barriger) White.

She was married to the late Gordon Berger, who died in November of 1980.

A Unadilla resident from 1941-1999, Velma moved to Rochester in 1999 to be near her daughter.

For several years she served as office manager and secretary for R.F. Hust, M.D., in Unadilla. She was a former member and matron of Unadilla Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 179, the Unadilla Women’s Club, and was active in bowling leagues and the Unadilla United Methodist Church.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Carol B. Weed of Rochester; five stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Kristine D. Shaw-Moss

DELHI — Kristine D. Shaw-Moss, 38, of Cherry Valley, formerly of Delhi, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Cherry Valley, as the result of a house fire.

She was born Oct. 6, 1965, in Oneonta, the daughter of Richard and Bette (Briggs) Shaw.

She married Walter Moss on Aug. 26, 1996.

Kristine graduated from Delaware Academy in 1983. Her love of animals took her to employment in the Cherry Valley area, where she cared for many animals.

She is survived by her mother, Bette Shaw and Jessie Cochrane of Delhi; her father, Richard and Barbara Shaw of Franklin; a sister, Dennise Bright of Grand Gorge, and brother-in-law, Robert Bright of Stamford; a half brother, Jason Shaw of Otego; her friend and mentor, Michael Huggins of Cherry Valley; her husband; Walter W. Moss of Andes; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her grandparents, Frank and Minnie Briggs and Charles and Nellie Shaw, predeceased her.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services and burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

In memory of Kristine’s love of animals, contributions in her memory are asked to be made to the local Humane Society of one’s choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Arthur N. Jackson

SARASOTA, Fla. — Arthur N. Jackson, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 4, 2004, at home in Sarasota, Fla.

Arthur was born in Walton on July 27, 1940, to Percy and Annie Wolf Jackson, now deceased.

He later moved to Cooperstown as a young child. He was a graduate of Cooperstown High School, Class of 1959.

On Aug. 6, 1961, he married the former Janet M. Lippett in Cooperstown.

He was employed for many years as a manager at the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, and when the A&P dissolved, he joined Lorillard Tobacco Company, retiring in 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Janet M. Jackson; two sons, Arthur N. Jr. and his wife, Elaine, and Jeffrey, both of Sarasota; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Ruth Kelsey and Margaret Bailey, both of Walton, and Catharine Ward of Oneonta; two brothers, Ambrose Jackson of New Berlin and William Jackson of Walton; sister-in-law, Sally and Tom Wirtzfeld, Anacortes, Wash.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Minnie Van Demark.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Lippett Farm, Cooperstown.

John E. Merzig

ONEONTA — Dr. John E. Merzig died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.

He was born in Buffalo on Jan. 27, 1921, to Matthias and Gladys (Wells) Merzig.

He was a graduate of Ebenezer High School and Houghton College in Houghton. He entered military service in 1943, and under the Army Specialized Training Program was enrolled in medical school at St. Louis University in Missouri, from which he graduated in 1946.

In 1944, he married Beatrice Gage of Morris in St. Louis.

He interned at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and took over the general practice of Dr. John Clarke in Morris in 1947. While in Morris, John and Bea had three boys, Edward in 1948, John (Jack) in 1950 and David in 1952.

In 1953, John entered an anesthesia residency at Albany Medical Center. After his certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology, John volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Public Health Service. In his two years in Public Health Service, he was posted to the Marine Hospital on Staten Island, the U.S. Public Health Hospital in Fort Defiance, Ariz., and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

After completing military service in 1957, the family returned to Oneonta, where John organized the Department of Anesthesiology at A.O. Fox Hospital, the department in which he served as chief until 1983. He established a School of Respiratory Therapy at Fox Hospital, training many of the area’s first therapists. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Christian Medical Society.

In 1964, he purchased property in Laurens town, where he built a cabin that provided a place of peace and enjoyment for John, his extended family and friends.

As a "gentleman farmer," he pursued beekeeping, maple syrup production and clock repair among other hobbies, which formed the core of his interests after retirement. His daily visits to Boudreau’s Coffee Shop and his many acts of kindness to his neighbors in Laurens made John a beloved fixture of his adopted community.

John is survived by Bea, his wife of 60 years; and his three sons, Edward G. Merzig, M.D., of Albany, the Rev. John W. Merzig, D.Min., of Telford, Pa., and David S. Merzig, J.D., of Oneonta, and their wives, Barbara, Roberta (Babs) and Margery. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Karenna and her husband, David, Rowenhorst of Alexandria, Va., Laura and her husband, David, Fabrycky of Silver Spring, Md., Matthew of McLean, Va., Martha and her husband, Ben, Burrington of Ann Arbor, Mich., Leslie of Washington, D.C., John Edward II and his wife, Marianne, of Clifton Park, and Sarah and her husband, Richard, Fountain of Lincoln, Neb. He is also survived by nephew, Paul Merzig of Chicago, Ill.; niece, Marie (Merzig) Bialy of Freedom; and many grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being made through the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. The family was present for calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Lamberton of the First Baptist Church of Morris officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Houghton College, Houghton, NY 14744.
