Paul J. Hunt

SPRAKERS — Paul J. Hunt, 51, of Shafer Road died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at his residence in Bloomville.

Mr. Hunt was born Dec. 9, 1952, in Cobleskill, the son of Franklin C. and Ruth (Darrow) Hunt.

Paul was a graduate of Canajoharie Central School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural engineering from Cornell University. He was a dairy farmer for more than 20 years in Sprakers and also served as assessor for the town of Root. Paul was employed as a mapper for Montgomery County Property & Tax and for the past two years has been director of Real Property Tax & School Assessment for Delaware County.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Harrison) Hunt, whom he married July 24, 1976; three sisters, Janet Burchell of Japan, Virginia Clinansmith of Sprakers, and Margaret Stoutland of Canajoharie; a brother, Stuart Hunt of Damascus, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at the Faith Bible Church, Crosby Road, Sprakers, with the Rev. Mark Kelly officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

William Mokay

DELHI — William Mokay, 82, of Delhi passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, surrounded by family and friends.

Mr. Mokay was born Sept. 3, 1922, the fifth child and fourth son of the late Demetrios and Mary (Rogosky) Mokay in Maplewood.

He attended Maplewood Grammar School and graduated from Watervliet High School. During World War II, Mr. Mokay served as a baker in the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise. He was honorably discharged March 19, 1946.

On April 12, 1953, he married the former Irene Beeble. They celebrated 51 years together until her death May 10, 2004.

For a few years, he worked as a meat cutter in Vermont. In 1949, he joined his brothers in business in Delhi. They operated Mokay’s Grocery Store, Mokay’s Liquor Store and Mokay Brothers Appliances.

While in Delhi, he was a member of the American Legion in Maplewood for many years and also served as a volunteer with the Delhi Ambulance Squad.

During his years at Mokay’s Market, Mr. Mokay became fondly known as the "baloney man" by all the youngsters who entered the store. When Mokay’s Market closed its doors in March 1979, Mr. Mokay decided to start a new career. For about six months he worked at the Delaware County Infirmary. He later found a job in the maintenance department of SUNY Delhi. He remained at the college until his retirement in 1993.

In the summer of 1993, Mr. Mokay was able to take a much- needed vacation to Vermont for a family reunion. In the summer of 1994, he was again able to travel with his family for a trip to North Carolina for sightseeing and visiting.

Mr. Mokay is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Ken) Mackin of Huguenot and Stephanie Warner of Delhi; brothers, John (Theresa) Mokay of Delhi and Andrew Mokay of Meredith; sisters, Annie Mokay and Katherine (Frank) Bielawa, both of Watervliet, and Mary (David) Bushallow of Kensington, Md.; a sister-in-law, Vera Mokay of Watervliet; two brothers-in-law, Dr. John Beeble of Odessa, Fla., and Ret. Lt. Col. Peter Beeble of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren, Matthew Mancini, John Ryan and Jason Mackin, L. William and Ashley Warner and Erica Mokay; great-grandson, Christopher Mackin; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene; parents, Demetrios and Mary; a son, Paul Michael Mokay; brothers, Peter, Alexander and Michael; and a sister, Tina.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will take place at noon Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at St. Basil’s Orthodox Church, Watervliet, with Father Alvian Smirensky officiating. Interment will immediately follow the services in St. Basil’s Orthodox Church Cemetery.

A small reception will be held at the Maplewood American Legion following interment.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to either: St. Basil’s Orthodox Church General Fund, Archibald Street, Watervliet, NY or the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, in loving memory of William Mokay.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Lois S. Lovelace

ONEONTA — Lois Sheldon Lovelace of West End Avenue in Oneonta, went to be with her Lord, Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 13, 1910, in Cannonsville, the daughter of Ambrose and Annoinette (Smith) Sheldon. Lois’ mother died when she was 1 week old. She lived in a number of homes until she was 5 years old. At that time, she went to live with the George Turner family in Deposit and grew up there. She attended a one-room school.

She married Harris Lovelace in March of 1930. Mr. Lovelace predeceased her on Nov. 3, 1979.

Lois was a stay-at-home mom, although most of the time she worked cleaning other people’s homes. She also was an author. She did volunteer work at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta. Lois was a den mother and Girl Scout leader during the 1940s and 1950s.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta for many years, where she also taught Sunday school.

She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Cantwell, of Delhi; and a son, Philip Lovelace, of Ada, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Mildred Neer and Thressa Shiner, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the First Baptist Church, 71 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Lois Lovelace.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Lewis C. Jackson

ONEONTA — Lewis C. Jackson Sr., 70, of Oneonta went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at home with his family at his side after a valiant 15-year battle with several health problems.

He was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Triangle, the son of Earl and Margaret (Potter) Jackson.

He married Andrea Pizanello on May 6 at the Otego Baptist Church and together they have shared 49 wonderful years together.

Lewis spent many years in building and construction as well as logging with his brothers. However, his true passion was farming, which he did until his health failed.

His hobbies included many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and playing horseshoes. He especially liked listening to music and playing along on the harmonica. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lewis touched many lives and was a friend to all and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Andrea Jackson, of Oneonta; his nine children and their spouses, Lewis C. "Butch" and Deb Jackson Jr. of Davie, Fla., Linda McDade and Gary Riordan of Garrattsville, Connie Elwood and John Walsh of Oneonta, Steven Jackson and Donna Ross of Elmira, Susan and Tony Sapienza of Davenport, Christine and Dan Stoesser of Hobart, Cindy and Michael Ward of Oneonta, Jeffery Jackson of Oneonta and Rachel Jackson and William Brooks III of Oneonta; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Robert Jackson of Oxford, Dorothy Smith of Davenport, Mary and John Miskell of Davenport, Bernard and Verylena Jackson of Walkill, Phyllis Skokan of Otego, Harry Jackson of Liberty, Betty and Donald Hunt of Oneonta, Shirley and Everett Rhinebeck of Hancock and Arthur "Joe" and Anna Jackson of Unadilla; three sisters-in-law, Mary Jackson of Schenectady, Emma Jackson of Niskayuna and Evelyn Jackson; and his mother-in-law, Peg Pizanello of Oneonta; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lewis was predeceased by one son-in-law, George McDade; and four brothers and two sisters, Earl Jackson, Pauline Crevier Powers, Keith Jackson, Byron "Barney" Jackson, Millie Adkins and Raymond Jackson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Lewis C. Jackson Sr.

Wendell R. Barnard

NORWICH — Mr. Wendell R. Barnard, 83, of County Route 31, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Born March 23, 1921, in the town of Westford, he was a son of Frank and Ione Chamberlin Barnard, and was a graduate of New Berlin High School.

Wendell married Doris Mickle on June 16, 1984, in Columbus. He was a Columbus resident most of his life where he was a self-employed dairy farmer until his retirement. Mr. Barnard was a member of the Burlington Flats First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; a sister-in-law, Margaret Green of the town of Westford; and several cousins, including Eddie and Eva Chamberlin of South Hartwick.

He was predeceased by a brother, Shirley Green.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.

Sylvia Alys Bouton

ONEONTA — Sylvia Alys Bouton, 74, passed away in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at her home in Oneonta, after a long illness.

Sylvia, the daughter of Elmer and Lydia (Shepherd) McLaud, was born on Nov. 11, 1930, in South Kortright.

She married Gerald L. Bouton in 1952 in Oneonta.

Mrs. Bouton was a lifetime resident of Oneonta and is survived by her husband Gerald of Oneonta; her beloved sons Stephen and Thomas Bouton; granddaughters Savannah and Lauren Bouton of Auburn, Ala. and Elena and Emily Bouton of Albany and her daughter-in-law Janet Joseph. Sylvia is also survived by her sisters and brothers and their spouses, Joyce and James Broe of Oneonta, Maurice McLaud of Edgewater, Fla., Morton and Dorothy McLaud of Schenectady, David and Barbara McLaud of Central Valley; brother-in-law Pat Grasso of Laurens; sister-in-law Joan McLaud of Norwich and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was pre-deceased by her mother and father, nephew David McLaud, sisters Marilyn and Harriett, and brothers Donald and Douglas.

Sylvia received her degree in nursing from Crouse-Irving Memorial, in Syracuse and held positions at Fox Hospital, Hartwick College and Head Start. She also served as co-owner, secretary and treasurer of Bouton’s Fast Stop.

Sylvia had a strong love of gardening, the outdoors, travel, art and music and was an avid reader. She will be remembered for her unique sense of humor, unending compassion for others and devotion to her family and friends. In addition to volunteering for Hospice, the Red Cross and Orpheus Theater, Sylvia was a generous contributor to many other charitable organizations. Sylvia will be deeply missed.

Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. The family will be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Main Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Thomson, officiating.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Catskill Area Hospice and/or Save the Children (https://www.savethechildren.org).

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Rolf Samuelsen

MARGARETVILLE — Rolf Samuelsen, 75, of Margaretville, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at his home.

He was born June 15, 1929, in Svennevik, Norway, the son of Silius Severin and Andrea Nikoline Olsen Samuelsen.

Rolf married Theresa A. McGrath on Jan. 26, 1956, in the Bronx.

He retired in 1982 after working for the Westchester County Carpenters Union.

Rolf came to this country from Norway in 1950 and lived in the Bronx. He later moved to Yonkers. In 1972 Rolf and his wife moved to Margaretville. He enjoyed being outdoors. Hunting, fishing and working in his garden were among his favorite activities.

Rolf is survived by his wife, Theresa Samuelsen of Margaretville; two daughters, Donna Samuelsen Samuels of Margaretville, Karen Samuelsen Grimm of Phoenicia; one brother, Alf Samuelsen of Pennsylvania and several other brothers and sisters in Norway.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Very Rev. James J. McDevitt officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Kelly Corners Cemetery, Kelly Corners.

Contributions in memory of Rolf Samuelsen may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Lewis C. Jackson

ONEONTA — Lewis C. Jackson Sr., 70, who went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, was also predeceased by brothers-in-law, Sherman Smith, Charles Skokan, Guy Van Buren, William Powers and Walter Crevier; nephews, Mike Miskell, Sherm Smith Jr. and Larry Jackson, nieces, Pam and Teresa Adkins, Kathy and Brenda Smith, daughters of Sherm and Dorothy Smith and Patricia, daughter of Byron Jackson.

William Winegard

RICHMONDVILLE — William J. Winegard, 54, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004.

He was born Sept. 15, 1950, in Cobleskill, the son of William J. and Mary T.E. (Rooney) Winegard.

He was predeceased by his father in 1969 and his mother in 2000.

Bill was a graduate of Richmondville Central School, Class of 1968, as valedictorian. He received his bachelor’s of science from SUNY Oneonta, where he was exempt from his final exams, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He also took graduate courses at SUNY Albany in geology.

Bill worked closely with his father on the family-owned saw mill and lumber businesses, which were handed down from father to son for at least three generations. Most recently Bill was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club and also was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation in Albany in the Geology and Technical Services Departments.

Bill became an Eagle Scout in Troop 15 Richmondville, Otschodela Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was an annual fund-drive canvasser each year.

He was the secretary of the town of Richmondville Planning Board; a member of the Comprehensive Committee; a charter member and trustee of the Richmondville Historical Society and a generous supporter of the restoration fund for the Bunn-Tillapaugh Mill.

On Sept. 11, he was the guest speaker at the Historical Society meeting, presenting a program on "Local Geology." Bill was instrumental in getting the Cave House Museum of Mining and Geology in Howes Cave project started. He explored the quarry and the mines and led tours in the early days. He was described as a very patient geologist. He was also a member of the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of Steam Powered Engines. Each year at the Gallupville Gas-Up, he got the steam up to blow the whistle on steam-powered engines.

Bill was a quiet and loyal friend to many people and he will be sorely missed.

He is survived by three uncles, George and his wife, Cathy, Rooney of Worcester, Raymond Rooney of East Worcester, and Leo and his wife, Murlie, Rooney of Perris, Calif.; as well as many cousins.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2004, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary Edmister, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Richmondville, officiating. Burial will follow at the Richmondville Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Richmondville Historical Society, care of Susan Rightmyer, PO Box 316, Richmondville, NY 12149.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Doris N. Reed

BRADENTON, Fla. — Doris N. Reed, 84, of Bradenton and formerly of Edgewood Drive, Sidney, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Albany, the daughter of the late Leon and Jessie Rury Nichols.

On May 9, 1942, she married G. Kenneth Reed in Worcester. He predeceased her on Dec. 8, 1997. Doris and Ken moved to Sidney from Worcester shortly after their marriage, and Ken served as town justice.

She was a devout Christian and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Sidney, where she sang in the choir for many years and was always ready to serve the Lord by helping others.

Doris was an inspiration to all who witnessed her devotion to her husband, Ken, during his final illness. Her family will always remember her as a kind and loving mother and grandmother.

Doris enjoyed the respect of many friends and neighbors over the years. She was proud to be a breast-cancer survivor and truly enjoyed her volunteer work helping other survivors in the Reach to Recovery Program.

She also loved to knit and would always have a pink-and- blue baby blanket on hand to lovingly present to the new parents.

Survivors include her children, Mary and Diane Reed of Clifton Park, Sharon and Bill Cook of Sarasota, Fla.; her sister, Lorraine Sullivan, of Freeport, Long Island; and her cousin, Frances Field of Jamestown, Pa. Grandchildren include Tamara and Brandon Solari of Helena, Mont., Kelly Reed of Clifton Park, and Kimberly Reed of New York City. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, from the First Baptist Church, River Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Kenneth Southworth, pastor, and the Rev. David Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester. Friends are invited to call from noon until services at 1 p.m. at her church.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the First Baptist Church, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838 if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Reba P. Unckless

FAIRPORT — Reba P. Unckless, 90, of 120 Jefferson Ave., Apt. 52, Fairport, and a former Canastota resident, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at her home, following a brief illness.

She was born on June 30, 1914, in Canastota, the daughter of Julius J. and Elizabeth Foster Phillips.

Reba was a 1932 graduate of Canastota High School and Cazenovia Seminary. She attended the Crane School of Music at Potsdam State Normal School, later becoming a music teacher.

She spent her early years in Canastota, and had also lived in Schenevus, as well as Jewel and Zephyrhills, Fla., for many years before moving to Fairport in 1998.

Reba was a past matron of the Schenevus chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Zephyrhills Methodist Church.

She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Reba married Robert C. Unckless on Dec. 30, 1934, in Cazenovia. Robert died on June 22, 1983.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Linda U. and Neil Waters of Middlebury, Vt.; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Karen Unckless of Fairport; two grandchildren, Amy Unckless and her husband, Marc Gallagher, of New York City, and Robert Unckless and his fiancee, Heather Fiore, of Rochester; and several cousins and close friends.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 20, 2004, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. The Rev. David H. Love will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service.

Interment will be in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to Senior Options for Independence, care of 31 South Main St., Fairport, NY 14450 or a charity of their choice.
