Frances M. Kenyon

EAST MEREDITH — Frances M. Kenyon, 84, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at home with her family.

She was born June 10, 1920, in Bloomville, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Hoag) Martin.

She married Richard Arthur Kenyon on Sept. 10, 1940; together they raised four children and one grandson, Nathanael Kenyon of Connecticut.

Mrs. Kenyon is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Dale Goodrich of Richfield Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Larry Soule of Bloomville; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Margaret Kenyon of East Meredith; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Anna Martin of Bloomville, Ruth Youket of Worcester and Doris Tuttle Croteau of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one son, Jim, in 2002; her husband of 64 years, Richard, on Jan. 20, 2005; eight brothers, John, Lloyd, Wendell, Guy, Charley, Frank, Bob and Tom Martin; and six sisters, Hetty Turk, Betty Dales, Anna Hall, Marjorie Kearns, Mary Morse and Nellie Hadden.

A lifelong area resident, Mrs. Kenyon retired from South Kortright Central School in 1982 as a mathematics teacher. She had also spent time teaching in Grand Gorge and Delhi. After retiring, she worked as a tutor. This gave her great joy and a sense of accomplishment. She loved to teach.

She served as town clerk, tax collector, councilwoman and assessor, all for the town of Kortright; and as school tax collector for SKCS.

She was a member of the Bloomville United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer, was an Ad Council member and held many other positions. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women, held the position of county chairman for the American Heart Association, and was a member of the Davenport and Kortright Historical Groups.

She loved baking cookies and fudge for her grandkids, playing pinochle with her family and friends and spending time in her flower garden. She and her husband loved to dance.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Lenz officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Contributions in her memory are asked to be made to the Bloomville United Methodist Church, Catskill area Hospice and Palliative Care or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Edna H. Gardner

NEW BERLIN — Edna H. Gardner, 84 years old, of New Berlin, passed away Feb. 1, 2005, at her home in New Berlin.

Edna was born April, 1, 1920, in the town of Laurens, the daughter of Charles and Harriet (Goodspeed) Gardner. She spent her childhood in the New Lisbon area and attended local area schools in New Lisbon.

Edna loved ice cream, especially chocolate.

She is survived by one sister, Agnes Gardner of New Berlin; and a good friend, Cliff Frink of Pittsfield; as well as a few cousins.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held in the spring. Interment will be in Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

E. Frances French

MOUNT UPTON — E. Frances French, 84, of Lockwood Hill, Mount Upton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the Gilmour Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born June 21, 1920, daughter of the late Reid N. and Mary Olive (Lundy) Layton in Allamuchy, N.J.

Frances married Donald J. DeForest and later remarried George French. He predeceased her Sept. 1, 1997. She was also predeceased by two stepsons, Gerald S. DeForest and Ronnie D. French.

Frances is survived by David A. and Pauline DeForest, Mount Upton, Mary Frances and Bruce Smith, Holmesville, Rodger D. and Sharon DeForest, Yorktown, Va., Andrew W. and Dawn DeForest, Mount Upton, Charlotte Battin, Dover, Del., and Charlene French LaFever, Norwich; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Unadilla Friends Church in Rogers Hollow. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Conway officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Friends Church, care of David DeForest, 285 County Highway 2, Mount Upton, NY 13809.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Warner Reynolds Woolfenden

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Warner Reynolds Woolfenden died Jan. 30, 2005, in Salt Lake City, Utah, of causes related to his five-decade battle with juvenile diabetes.

He was born Sept. 13, 1938, in Magna, Utah, to Reynolds and Louisa Veola Woolfenden.

He married his lifelong love, Roselyn Paulsen, on Aug. 21, 1958, in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Warner attended the University of Utah, receiving a B.S. degree in 1961 and a Ph.D. in chemistry in August of 1965. He was an assistant professor of Chemistry at SUNY College at Oneonta from 1969 to 1980. He also taught at universities in California and Utah. Wherever he taught, Warner’s students remember him for his enthusiasm and love of teaching.

Warner had many interests and talents, including photography, fishing and camping. While living in Oneonta, he did most of the construction work on the family home on Brigham Road.

As a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Warner served in many capacities. While he and his family lived in Oneonta, he worked with Scouts and the youth.

Warner will be missed and remembered as a happy, loving, generous person.

He is survived by his wife, Roselyn of Sandy, Utah; four children, Linda (John) Bowe and Shari (Lyle) Terry of Sandy, Utah, DeAnn (Mark) Warring of Austin, Texas, and Ronald (Alison) Woolfenden of West Jordon, Utah; 11 grandchildren, David, Joshua, Matthew and Heather Bowe, Stephanie, Emily and Rebekah Thomson, Mitchell and Logan Terry, Kyle and Ashley Woolfenden; and three sisters, Beverly (Frank) Hills of Concord, Mass., Carma (Wilford) Boren of Centerville, Utah, and Jeane (George) Chipman of Farmington, Utah.

Funeral services for Warner were held in Utah on Feb. 2, 2005.

Lillian E. Martin

COBLESKILL — Lillian E. Martin, formerly of Massapequa, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Martin moved to Cobleskill on Oct. 5, 1983, and was active with the Onistagrawa Chapter of the O.E.S. She was also a member of the Warnerville Methodist Church and most recently the Wesleyan Church, Legion Drive, Cobleskill.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, Donald H. Martin of Cobleskill, whom she married June 16, 1945; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan H. and Michelle Martin of Westford, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Swensson of Baldwin; three nieces and three nephews; and her beloved cat, Tippie.

Mrs. Martin was predeceased by her four brothers, Leonard, Howard and Albert Svensson and Edward Swensson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donald Klob of the Wesleyan Church officiating.

A spring interment will be made in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Carl A. Puylara Sr.

ONEONTA — Carl A. Puylara Sr., 80, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at his home.

Carl was born July 13, 1924, in Hudson Falls. He was the son of John G. Puylara and Emma L. (Klinger) Puylara. Carl was one of six children.

Carl was an Oneonta High graduate and was in the United States Marine Corps from March 1943 to April 1946. He served his country in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, the Philippines, from 1944 to 1946. Carl participated in action at Bismarck Archipelago, then Mindanao. Carl held rank of sergeant upon his release from active duty during World War II.

He married Sophia B. Sobers on Dec. 16, 1947. Sophia predeceased Carl on Feb. 9, 2001. He was also predeceased by a dear daughter-in-law, Gloria (Gartland) Puylara, in May 1993; three brothers, John and wife, Irma, Alfred and Leonard; and his sister, Harriett, and husband, Eddy (Guy) Fay; also many brothers and sisters-in-law.

In the 1950s to the early 1960s Carl was manager of Rudolph’s Jewelers on Main Street in Oneonta. In 1962 he became sole owner of Galinn’s Jewelers, operating it for 37 years, until closing in June of 1999.

Carl was a member of the Oneonta Lodge 1312, B.P.O. Elks. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, hunting, his camp and winter home in the south. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be forever loved and missed.

Carl is survived by five children, three sons, Carl A. Puylara Jr. and wife Susan, John G. Puylara and Alfred M. Puylara and wife Patricia, two daughters, Joanne Puylara-Boyd and husband Lloyd and Denise M. Puylara (Pettit); nine grandchildren, Erika, Alexis and Brooke of Florida, Daniel and Kerry Ann of Otego, Michael of Pennsylvania, and A.J., Rebecca and Anjaela of Laurens; brother and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; and two lifelong dear friends, Erwin (Sonny) Cower and Harry Rice.

At Carl’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial services. This summer an announcement will appear for graveside committal ceremony for Carl and Sophia at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s name to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care of Oneonta.

Carolyn C. Corey

FRANKLIN — Carolyn Constance Corey, 93, most recently of Franklin and formerly of Wilbraham, Mass., passed away peacefully at her residence Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005.

She was born Aug. 10, 1911, in Chicopee, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Gabriella (Filip) Nowak.

She married Donald W. Corey on July 5, 1941, in Old Lyme, Conn.

She was a member of the Old First Church in Springfield, Mass.

A homemaker, she had a deep interest and love for her family and many friends.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald W. Corey of Franklin; her daughter, Janis Mackenzie and her husband, Colin, of Franklin; two granddaughters, Corey and Katie Mackenzie; a sister, Joyce Redmond of Flemington, N.J.; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pamela and Bruce Corey of Wilbraham, Mass.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald N. Corey.

A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Sampson Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield, Mass., with Dr. Bruce Brewer, pastor of the Foster Memorial Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield, Mass.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Frances H. Devlin

ONEONTA — Frances H. Devlin, 94, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1910, in Oneonta, the daughter of Jacobus and Anna (Brahl) Halter.

She married James V. Devlin on Aug. 17, 1940.

Frances is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marianna and Joseph Creighton of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Tracie and George Jones of Oneonta, Carrie and Anthony Cickerell of Montevallo, Ala., Shelly and David Rosen of Clinton, N.J., Darci and Kent "Third" Merwin of Davenport, Joshua and Rebecca Creighton of Raleigh, N.C., and Joanne McDonagh of Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Jasin Jones, Heather Jones, Michael Jones, David Jones, Ryan Rosen, Colin Rosen, Stephen Georgia, Katharine Merwin, Lucas Merwin and Abbey Creighton; two great-grandchildren, Seth Berge and Korbin Jones; one sister, Margaret Patrizi of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, James, on Dec. 23, 1992; her brothers, Charles, Edward, Jacob, Harry, Robert, Martin "Buster" and Clifford; and her sisters, Anna, Kate, Ona and Elizabeth.

A lifelong resident of Oneonta, Frances loved to golf and dance, but her greatest joy was caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing with them the stories of her life here in Oneonta.

Friends may call Saturday at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 3 p.m. to the funeral service time at 4 p.m.. The Rev. Jane Pykus, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will be held at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the Oneonta Nursing Home staff.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, PO Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

Thomas G. Wren

MORRIS — Thomas Gowan Wren, 79, of Morris and formerly of Monsey, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born in Spring Valley on Oct. 11, 1925, the son of William and A. Irena (Myles) Wren.

He married Mary Louise Karam.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, serving aboard the USS Leary No. 664.

He was a member of the "Tin Can Sailors" of upstate New York. He was a charter member and past commander of the American Legion Kearsing-Edwards Post No. 1600. Tom was also a past chief and past president of the Hillcrest Fire Company of Spring Valley.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise of Morris; his children, Marian Kane and husband Thomas of Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, T. Daniel Wren and wife Joan of Sprakers, Myles Wren of Wesley Hills, and Ellen Wren-Keller and husband Douglas of Rosendale. He was blessed by his grandchildren, Brianna, Kyle and Meghan Kane, Bill, Christopher and Michael Wren, and Kaya and Gowan Keller. Tom is also survived by a brother, Gordon Wren Sr. of Spring Valley; as well as several nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, Route 59, Suffern.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Johnston officiating.

Burial will be in the Brick Church Cemetery.

Those who wish are asked to donate to "The Fisher House, Stratton VA" 113 Holland Ave., Albany, The "Firemen’s Home" Hudson, or the charity of your choice in Tom’s memory.

Local arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Gail Lee Hafele

WALTON — Gail Lee Hafele, 60, of Walton died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at his home.

He was born Oct. 11, 1944, in Walton, the son of Henry J. and Bernice (Radeker) Hafele.

Lee was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Walton Central School, Class of 1964. He then went to barber school in Schenectady. Upon graduating, he started serving his apprenticeship with a couple of local barbers.

In March 1965, he went into the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Cadmus, a support ship, as a barber and firefighter and was able to complete his apprenticeship. He served in DaNang, Vietnam. Lee was honorably discharged in March 1969.

He then operated his own barber shop in Downsville, until he had to close his shop because of to failing health. For a short time, he worked at the creamery in Frasier and then went to work for The Walton Reporter. He worked there as typesetter and was known to the local schoolchildren, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who toured the Reporter’s office in recent years, as "the man who typed 1,000 words a minute." He also was the creator of "Looking Back-100 Years Ago from the Pages of The Walton Reporter."

Gail had a very extensive hobby. Many years and thousands of hours were spent researching his family’s genealogy. He had traveled many miles to cemeteries and public offices in the area and corresponded with many in the United States and Europe in search of Hafele and Radeker family history. He had researched back centuries ago. Gail left volumes of family history, with photos dating back into the 1800s up to the present.

People would contact him about their families’ histories, connected with his. In the 1970s, the family named him "Official Family Historian." Gail was noted by village, town and county offices for his research. They were constantly referring people to him for help on their family histories.

Lee is survived by his two brothers, Richard Hafele of Walton and St. Cloud, Fla., and Charles Hafele of Walton; his beloved sister-in-law, Dianne Hafele of Walton; his aunt, Mary Radeker of Walton; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert D. Hafele, in 1989; his sister, Betty Shields, in 1997; and his brother-in-law, Paul Shields, in 1998.

A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Walton Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walton Emergency Squad, 61 West St., Walton, NY 13856, in loving memory of Gail Lee Hafele.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home of Walton.

Alfred J. Gallodoro Jr.

PRATTSVILLE — Alfred J. Gallodoro Jr., a respected member of the community of Prattsville, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, after a long illness.

He was born in Louisiana, moved to Long Island and eventually to Prattsville in 1969.

A United States Air Force trained welder, private pilot, ballistics expert, gunsmith and photographer, he especially loved aerial photography.

He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a hunter-safety instructor for 20 years, which gave him the opportunity to touch thousands of lives.

Whether on the firing range or soaring through the skies, his goal was always perfection. His joy of flying came through his exposure to planes during his service in the Air Force during the Korean War as an aircraft trained welder and graduated at the top of his class.

His ability to pilot a plane was enhanced by his skill at repairing and re-manufacturing aircraft through his welding ability. He also worked in an ammunitions depot giving him his foundation in ballistics.

His expertise in welding led him to be the first manufacturer of Go-Kartson Long Island and successfully raced his karts on the go-kart tracks there. He was the proprietor of his own ornamental iron and fabrication shop and go-kart company. A gifted gunsmith and firearms dealer, he conducted that business as well.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and a team captain of a Long Island gun club. He enjoyed raising game birds to be set free in the mountains. He had many hobbies, but his favorite was photographing his friends, family, neighbors and nature. He loved the guitar and especially flamenco.

He leaves behind his wife, Dolores, of 48 years; son, Michael Gallodoro of Richmondville; daughter, Cheryl Skold of Red Hook; two stepsons, Richard and Robert Hill of Florida; his father, Alfred Gallodoro Sr., noted jazz musician; three sisters; three grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary, and his sister, Rita.

Internment will be held in the National Cemetery in Saratoga in the spring. Cremation services will be held privately.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the Huntersfield Christian Church Center, located at Prattsville. All are welcome to come and share this special day of "memories" with his family and friends. A buffet luncheon will be provided. Please feel free to bring a covered dish.

Condolences may be sent to his wife, Dolores.
