Nelson A. Wells Jr.

ONEONTA — After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Nelson A. "Butch" Wells Jr. passed away Saturday, April 9, 2005, to be with the Lord.

He came into this world June 9, 1945, to the parents of Nelson and Lena (Martin) Wells Sr. of Otego, who survive.

He married Violet Marble on March 3, 1968, in Oneonta. They have had 37 years of love, laughter and happiness. They were husband and wife, but most of all best friends.

Butch joined the Navy in 1963 and was stationed in Virginia for four years. He joined his father with the Iron Workers Union No. 158 in 1963 for 13 years. He moved on to the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in Oneonta for 25 years. He was a true railroad man.

You never knew what you would find Butch doing; he had so many hobbies. He loved to build furniture, whether it be for friends of family. One of his favorite pastimes was for Violet and him to hop into the 1959 Apache and just cruise, listening to the oldies.

Two of the greatest joys of Butch’s life were his two grandchildren, Krissy and Jerry. You could just see Butch’s heart melt even at the mention of their names. He took the job of being grandpa very seriously.

Another one of Butch’s favorite pastimes was spending time with his namesake, Nelson A. (Butch) Wells III. They could be working on projects for their homes or discussing cars. But their time together was always special.

He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Wells of Oneonta; his son, Nelson A. (Butch) Wells III and his very special daughter-in-law, Teri Wells of Oneonta; his two favorite sidekicks (grandchildren), Kristen and Gerald Wells of Oneonta; four sisters, Patty and Bob Rotolo of Oneonta, Sandra Morin of Oneonta, Linda and Walter Holtsmaster of Pennsylvania and Ginger and Paul Butler of North Dakota; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Raymond Marble and the late Angelita Marble; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bev and Dave Fuller, John and Pam Marble, Richie Marble, Susie and Stan Holmes and Brian and Lynn Marble and their families.

A service to celebrate the life of Nelson A. "Butch" Wells Jr. will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bundy Cemetery, Otego.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the funeral home.

Because of Butch’s love for old cars, the family encourages his friends and family to drive their old cars and pay tribute to Butch.

Robert E. Moseley

HYDE PARK — Robert E. Moseley, 90, of Hyde Park, a visionary in the field of continuing education and a decorated hero of World War II, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the Thompson House in Rhinebeck.

The first dean of Continuing Education/Community Services at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, Mr. Moseley believed that the goal of continuing education was "education for any student," including adults returning to school.

At one time, he was an adult student himself, returning to Columbia University early in his career to obtain his master’s degree while teaching physical education in the Hyde Park Central School District.

In addition to strengthening the curriculum at Dutchess Community College, he set up extension programs at Greenhaven Correctional Facility, local area high schools and IBM, and initiated the Evening Student Association to make part-time students feel closer to the college.

"Our Dad was a Renaissance man," the Moseley family stated. "He believed in equal education for everyone, regardless of class, gender or race. That was a unique position to take in the 1940s. But then, Bob Moseley was a unique man."

Robert Moseley was born in Windsor in 1914, the son of Henry Luther Moseley Sr. and Henrietta Van Ness Manwarren Moseley.

After graduating from Ithaca College and coaching and teaching physical education at Windsor High School, he joined the United States Army in 1942, a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in the 78th Infantry Division, part of Patton’s Third Army, and won a Silver and Bronze Star for the Battle of the Bulge. He was also awarded a Purple Heart.

His unit was one of the first units to cross the crucial Rhine River Bridge at Remagen, remembered as "the bridge too far." He was one of only two survivors in his squad. Mr. Moseley also served in Germany as a platoon leader and company commander. He was separated from active service in 1946, but continued his relationship with the 78th Division for most of his life, serving for some years as president of the Division Veterans Association, and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves.

In addition to his continuing involvement with education, Mr. Moseley was always a leader in Hyde Park community activity: a lifetime member of the Hyde Park Rotary Club, an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, member of Hyde Park American Legion Post 1303 and the Reformed Dutch Church of Hyde Park.

On April 6, 1942, in St. James’ Episcopal Church, he married Bertha E. (Betty) Strait. His wife of 55 years died in 1997.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas and his wife, Christie, of Baltimore, Md., and James and his wife, Donna, of New Berlin; a daughter, Elizabeth Quest and her husband, Thomas, of Hyde Park; five grandchildren, Jake, Maria, Luke and Daniel Moseley, and Evan Quest; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, George Kenneth and Henry Moseley.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Hyde Park. The Hyde Park American Legion Post will conduct services at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Reformed Dutch Church of Hyde Park, Route 9, Hyde Park, with the Rev. Thomas Fiet officiating.

Graveside services and burial with military honors will take place at noon Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.
