Mikena L. Pecora

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mikena L. Pecora, 95, of Sylvan Street passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, May 31, 2005, in her home.

She was born March 3, 1910, in Jersey City, N.J., a daughter of the late Joseph and Irene Magna Pecora.

Mikena moved with her family as a young girl to Richfield Springs, where she was educated in Richfield Springs Central School.

For many years, Mikena was a self-employed home keeper, serving many area residents.

Mikena had a very strong belief in God and was a devout Catholic. She was a dedicated member of St. Joseph’s Church and the church’s Rosary Altar Society as well as a member of the choir since she was a teenager.

One of her greatest joys was to be around her family. Many could recall the great memories and joy at the Pecoras’ home with her neighbors and friends where they talked about "the times." Something that Mikena cherished the most was singing and growing violets.

She will be remembered as a loving, caring person and a friend to everybody, the one you could count on when in need.

Mikena leaves behind many of her special friends and neighbors, who were always by her side.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Francis, in 1996; and her sister, Helen, in 1995.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, Richfield Springs, at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Terrence Healey officiating.

Calling hours for Mikena will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church or the Richfield Springs Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

A special thank you to Christine Labarre, NP; Dr. Carol Beechy; Otsego County Public Health Nursing Services, especially Mary, Kathy, Nancy, and all the home health care aides who helped her through the years, especially Rosie.

He also served as an assistant district attorney of Dutchess County, assistant public defender of Dutchess County, city court judge of Poughkeepsie and an assistant attorney general for the state of New York.

He was commodore of the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club and instrumental in relocating the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club to Hyde Park. His love for his family and the open water was matched only by his love of a good joke. He was known for his sharp wit, good humor and larger-than-life personality.

He was a graduate of Bard College and St. John’s University Law School.

James and Mary also enjoyed boating and swimming on Long Island Sound and on Nantucket Sound, as well as bike riding, sailing, clamming, blueberry picking and the scent of wild rosemary.
