Grace P. Gibson

ITHACA — Grace P. Gibson, 92, formerly of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at Lakeside Nursing Home in Ithaca, where she had resided for nearly seven years.

She was born Jan. 17, 1913, in Ancram, the third daughter of the Rev. Nicholas and Minna Thompson Paris.

She studied music at Hartwick College in Oneonta and married Herbert A. Gibson on Aug. 31, 1933. He died in 1987.

Six daughters and a son survive: Lucille of West Ft. Ann, Jane Cleverlay of Camillus, Marjorie Sundfors of St. Louis and Oneonta, Arlene Leitzke of Martinsburg, W.Va., Herbert of Albany, Helen of Ithaca, and Carol Alm of Blackstone, Mass. Ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

For many decades, Grace played the organ for various churches in the Oneonta area. She continued to play piano, using a portable keyboard, until the day of her death. Other employment outside her home included the offices of The Daily Star in Oneonta and the manufacturing enterprises of Bendix in Sidney.

Grace’s family is deeply grateful for the expert and loving care she received from the staff at Lakeside.

Memorials may be made to Lakeside, 1229 Trumansburg Road, Ithaca, NY 14850, or to Atonement Lutheran Church, 1 Center St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

A private graveside service will be held in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are with Lansing Funeral Home, Lansing, Ithaca.

Carl Donald Schulz

FALL BRANCH, Tenn. — Carl Donald Schulz, 87, of Fall Branch, Tenn., and formerly of Davenport, passed away peacefully at home Aug. 8, 2005.

Carl was born March 26, 1918, the son of the late Carl F. and Vada (Munson) Schulz.

Carl was a graduate of Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport, class of 1939.

Carl served in the Army Air Corps from April 1942 until May 1946. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant and received the following medals: American Campaign Medal, EAME Campaigne Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

He married Kathryn Grace Phoenix on Aug. 25, 1951, in Davenport. Carl and Kathryn worked and raised their children together on the family farm (Sunshine Mountain Dairy Farm) in Davenport until Kathryn’s death in July 1991. After Kathryn’s death, Carl moved to Florida and then to Tennessee with his daughter.

Carl was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also had a love of airplanes and flying.

Carl was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Carl is survived by his children, Janet (Clarence) Roe of Jefferson, Dona Schulz and Lois Hewitt of Fall Branch, Tenn., Carl (Karen) Schulz Jr. of Bloomville and Arlene (Norman) Schubert and Frank and Francis Schulz, all of Davenport. He is also survived by his brothers, George (Robert) and Walter (Dottie) Schulz, all of Davenport Center; and sister-in-law, Ruth Schulz of Meridale. Carl had 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He also has several nieces and nephews. He had one very special niece who wrote him faithfully, Donna (Fred) Fazio of New Berlin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; a newborn son; a grandson, Justin Roe; a brother, LeRoy (Dutch) Schulz; two sisters, Margaret (Ken) Groes and Midge (Clifford) Delameter; a nephew, Philip Schulz; and Patsy DeFilippo, Dona’s companion who helped care for Carl.

A memorial service will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at the Schuberts’ in Davenport, who now own the family farm. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome. The service will be conducted by Bert Moore.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Carl to The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, Delhi, NY 13753, (607) 746-3080.

Ruth E. Petersen

WALTON — Ruth E. Petersen of Walton and Taylor, Ark., died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at her daughter’s home in Walton. She was 88.

Mrs. Petersen was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Walton to Silas T. and Rachel Betsy DuMond Wolfe.

On July 23, 1936, she married Glenn R. Petersen in Walton. He predeceased her Nov. 18, 1989.

Mrs. Petersen was born and raised in Walton, graduating from Walton High School in 1935.

She lived in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1959 to 1990, when she moved to Taylor, Ark., to be near her family. She spent her summers with family in Walton.

She was a member of the New Hope Community Church in Walton. Mrs. Petersen will be remembered for her love of family, her faith in God and her love of music.

Mrs. Petersen is survived by her son, Ronald (Nelly) Petersen of Anchorage, Alaska; her daughters, Loretta (Dale) Babcock of Walton and Charlene (Gary) Covington of Taylor, Ark. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Petersen’s family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at the New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Ave., Walton, with the Pastors Larry Light and Jack Steele officiating.

Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Paul W. Erickson

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS — Paul W. Erickson, 82, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.

He was born May 25, 1923, in the Bronx, the son of William A. and Sophia (Kivimaki) Erickson of Helsinki, Finland.

Mr. Erickson married Marie Mengold on June 25, 1956, in the Bronx. She predeceased him July 24, 1981.

He was a career United States Army veteran, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He obtained the rank of private first class and served with the 238th Military Police Battalion and the Company C 728th Military Police Battalion.

He was a member of the Hawaii American Legion Post 19 and the Hawaii VFW Post 2432, where he also served as chaplain.

Mr. Erickson was a resident of the Worcester area for the past 20 years; he previously lived in Yorktown Heights for 20 years.

He enjoyed traveling, auto restoration and especially adored his dogs, his three closest friends, Midnight, Chippy and Picu.

He is survived by his daughter, Helen S. Purdy of Worcester; two granddaughters, Aimee (Purdy) and her husband, Recep Yazici, of Long Island, and Danielle Erickson of Mahopac; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, Andrew Paul Erickson.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester, with a Vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorktown Heights. Burial will follow in the Amawalk Hill Cemetery in Yorktown Heights.

Contributions may be made to the Volunteer Services at the Stratton VA Medical Center or to the Fisher House at the Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Martin G. Kennedy

EAST MEREDITH — Martin G. Kennedy, 86, of East Meredith passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Middletown, N.J., the son of Martin J. and Ellen (Quigley) Kennedy.

He was first married to Dorothy Weiler, who died in 1970. He then married Vera Naomi Mystrick on Feb. 12, 1977, in St. Agnes Church in Atlantic Highland, N.J. She predeceased him June 24, 2005.

For many years, Marty was the postmaster in Rumson, N.J., where he also owned a general store.

Marty was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Oneonta, St. Mary’s Young at Heart Group, Davenport Senior Citizens, St. Theresa’s Church group and the Delhi American Legion.

He was involved with the Delaware County Office of the Aging. He and his wife were well-known for selling Rawleigh products at local events and county fairs.

He is survived by 16 grandchildren, including Shirley Moseman and her three sons, Brian, Jeffery and Trevelyn Votee of East Meredith; 38 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. John Burns officiating.

Inurnment will be in the columbarium crypt in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, at a later date.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the East Meredith First Responders or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Avis B. Huckins

MILFORD — Avis B. Huckins, Milford, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

Mrs. Huckins was born June 19, 1929, in Grafton, N.H.

She married her husband, John, in 1956 in Andover, N.H.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Huckins, in October 2004, and by four brothers, Lester, Lawrence, Albert and George Belloir, all of New Hampshire.

Mrs. Huckins is survived by two daughters, Laurel White and her husband, David, Maryland, and Joan Lacy and her husband, Robert, Warfordsburg, Pa.; and by two sons, Gordon Huckins and his wife, Delores, Roseboom, and Donald Huckins of Worcester. She is survived by four grandsons. Avis is also survived by three sisters, Francis Blanchard, Massachusetts, Barbara Cote, New Hampshire, and Laura Hewitt of New Hampshire. She has two brothers, Shirley Belloir of New Hampshire and John Belloir of New Hampshire.

Mrs. Huckins was a homemaker and business partner with her husband, John. She and her husband owned and operated Dublin Veterinarian Clinic in Street, Md., for 14 years.

Mrs. Huckins was involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Street, Md. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Milford.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in the Milford Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Leo Joseph Stepski

MARGARETVILLE — Leo Joseph Stepski, 60, of Margaretville passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Leo was born in Cornwall on Aug. 4, 1945, the son of Leo E. Stepski and Catherine Berard.

Leo had worked as an auto parts clerk in Newburgh and Arkville. Most recently, he had been working at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center as a shuttle bus driver.

Leo was a member of the Arkville Fire Department. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed people. He played on a softball league in Newburgh. He played on the Delaware and Ulster Horseshoe League and was an active supporter of Girls Athletics at M.C.S.

Leo is survived by one daughter, Katherine Marie Stepski, Arkville; his former wife and friend, Liz McDaniels, Arkville; two sisters, Katherine "Tonie" McCauley, Branford, Conn., and Ina and husband, Hank Hamblin, Marlboro; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Frances Smith, Newburgh.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee officiating.

Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made in memory of Leo Stepski to the Margaretville Central School Booster Club.

Funeral arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Linn Keator

MARGARETVILLE — Linn Keator, 72, of Margaretville passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at his home with family members by his side.

Linn was born June 11, 1933, in Margaretville, the son of Frederick Lee and Eavon "Ruff" Keator.

He married Loretta Rappleyea Keator on Sept. 12, 1953, at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge.

He was in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He worked as a system analyst for IBM in Kingston for 33 years.

He was a lifelong area resident; a past Boy Scout and a Boy Scout Leader in Margaretville.

He was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury; the Middletown American Legion Post 216 since 1955; the Isaac Walton League; and the New Kingston Valley Grange.

Linn loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and traveling with his beloved wife, Loretta.

Linn is survived by his wife, Loretta Keator; his daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Mark Roberts; his son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Lynn Keator; mother-in-law, Viena Rappleyea; grandchildren, Derek and wife Kristina Ramp, Karla Ramp, Rebeka Keator, Sarah Keator, Isaiah Keator, Ezekiel Keator and Anna Roberts; brother-in-law, Jerald and wife Edna Rappleyea; sister-in-law, Velda Keator; and lifelong friend, Roger Shultis.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Deborah Keator, brother, Ward Keator, and granddaughter, Aleece Keator.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery in Margaretville.

In memory of Linn Keator, donations may be sent to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
