Sam Sisco

DELHI — Sam Sisco, 82, of Delhi, formerly of Ramsey, N.J., died Sept. 13, 2005, after a long illness.

Born in Ramsey, Mr. Sisco was a mason contractor in the borough for many years. An avid fisherman and small game hunter, he moved to Delhi in 1973.

Never idle, Sam found that he could renovate almost anything — from discarded carts to older homes.

Known for his wit, he was the life of any party and his door was always open.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia (nee Van Gelder), of 59 years; son, John Sisco and wife Cathy of Ramsey, N.J.; daughter, Carol Howard and husband John of Kortright; grandchildren, Brent Hoeverman and wife Dawn of Olive, Michelle MacIntyre of Delhi, Laura Reddinger and husband Brian of Ramsey, Erica and Craig Sisco of Ramsey; and great-grandchildren, Brandon and Danielle Hoeverman of Olive and Andrew Reddinger of Ramsey. Also surviving are a brother, Robert of Toms River, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Earl Sisco Jr.; and his parents, Earl Sisco Sr. and Pearl.

Arrangements were made by MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Memorial services will be held in Delhi at a later date.

Thomas E. Lavell

WALTON — Thomas E. Lavell, M.D., 77, of Walton passed away Sunday night at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a sudden illness.

Dr. Lavell was born in New York City on June 2, 1928, the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen MacDonald Lavell Sr.

Dr. Lavell married Jeanne Hoeko on April 23, 1988, in Walton.

He served his country as a lieutenant in the Navy as a flight surgeon from 1954 to 1957.

Dr. Lavell was a graduate of Cornell University with a B.A., New York University Medical School with an M.D., and Russell Sage Graduate School with an M.S. in Public Administration. He interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital, NYC, United States Navy School of Aviation Medicine, had a residency in Family Practice at the University of Colorado, and was a resident of general surgery at the University of Vermont.

He was licensed as a medical doctor in New York state, a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lavell was presently a field representative for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; a board of trustee member of O’Connor Hospital, Delhi; American Cancer Society, Eastern Division, and past president of the New York State Division; past president of Health Systems Agency of Northeast New York; a past member of the Bassett Healthcare Domestic Violence Research Project; and past medical director of Margaretville Hospital, Delaware Valley Hospital and Delaware County Medical Services.

He was former interim president and CEO of Delaware Valley Hospital, consultant, New York State Department of Health Office of Professional Medical Conduct, and a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Planned Parenthood of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Society of US Naval Flight Surgeons. Dr. Lavell was also a clinical assistant professor of surgery, State University of New York Upstate Health Science Center, and an adjunct faculty, health administration, Russell Sage Graduate School.

Dr. Lavell loved to teach and mentor students. He also loved to provide medical care to indigent people in Malawi, Central Africa, and at USPHS Indian Service Hospitals serving the Navaho and Sioux-Arapaho peoples.

He was once described by one of his colleagues as an "incredible healer."

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Lavell; three sons, Thomas E. Lavell III of Frankfurt, Germany, Christopher Lavell and his wife, Cindy, of Goshen, and Patrick Lavell and his wife, Sarah, of Rochester; his daughter, Melissa Whipple and children of Middletown; two stepchildren, Brooke Taber of Burlington, Vt., and Tye Taber of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Michael, Emily, Justin Thomas, Alex, Margot and Camille; and three cousins, Jim Murphy of Nevada, Bill Murphy of Idaho and Melissa Murphy of Montana.

Friends and relatives can call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be at 8 p.m., with the Rev. R.L. Donahue, officiating.

Rose Dittmaier

JEFFERSON — Rose Dittmaier, 85, passed away Sept. 27, 2005, at Conway Manor, Conway, S.C., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She and her husband, Walt, who predeceased her in 1983, owned and operated Jefferson Hardware in Jefferson for 25 years.

She was active in the Jefferson Fire Department Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary until they moved to Conway, S.C., in 1982.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Rosina Leher; two brothers, Louis and Joseph Leher; and a nephew, Keirn Leher, all of Pennsylvania; and a sister, Ann Vonderley of New York.

She is survived by two sons, Louis (Alice) Mullaney, Bohemia, and William (JoAnn) Mullaney, Freehold; two daughters, Denise (Skip) Hartmann, Middleburgh, and Joanne (Harry) Banks, Conway, S.C.; five granddaughters, Cathleen (Thomas) Shear, Susan (Peter) Kusminsky, Janice (Scott) Branigan, Debra (Les) Armstrong and Crystal (Jason) Perrott; four great-granddaughters; and six great-grandsons, all of New York; four nieces of Pennsylvania; and one grandson, Christopher Banks, Conway, S.C., who she helped raise.

The family will receive friends at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2005.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Cournoyer, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Stamford, NY 12167.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Richard T. Alger

ONEONTA — Richard T. Alger, 96, of Oneonta passed away Sept. 27, 2005, at The Otsego Manor.

He was born Nov. 17, 1908, in North Sanford, the son of Lewis L. and Mary (Tilyou) Alger.

He married Flora Jeffers on Nov. 1, 1978, in Oneonta. Mrs. Alger died Oct. 11, 2004.

He attended schools in Milford. Richard was a self-employed dairy farmer. He owned and operated two dairy farms in Milford and Roseboom until his retirement in 1972.

Richard is a former member of the Milford Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Steidle and Mrs. Elizabeth Scutt, both of Oneonta. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

June Irene Green

MILFORD — June Irene Green, loving wife of Robert W. Green for 52 years, passed away Tuesday, the 27 of Sept. 2005, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was the daughter of the late Irene (Collins) Peck and late Jacob Collins and stepdaughter of DeVillo Peck.

June was born Aug. 15, 1934, and graduated from South Kortright School. She lived in Milford.

In addition to her husband, June is survived by their children, Debra Bender and husband James, Randy Green and wife Lelia, Julie Metcalf and husband Michael, Lorre Gregory and husband Michael; grandchildren, Bruce Green and wife Rosa, Ava Gower and husband Kenny, Courtney, Nicole and Michael Metcalf, Kimber and Kayla Green, and Zain and Robert Gregory; great-grandson, Logan Gower; brother, Patrick Peck and wife Becky; and stepfather, DeVillo Peck.

June was predeceased by her brother, Gilbert Collins; granddaughter, Aubrey; and great-grandson, Gavin.

June was remembered for her beautiful voice, piano playing, and endearing love for her family and God.

As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, June loved to share her hope of God’s promise of a resurrection from death back to a healthy, youthful, everlasting life here on earth (Revelation 21:3-5). We, who remain, long to see her again along with many loved ones asleep in death although still alive in our hearts and minds.

No memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Jehovah’s Witnesses for the Worldwide Work, care of the North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3985 State Highway 23, West Oneonta, NY 13861.

Madeleine Bernard

SHARON SPRINGS — Chelsea resident Madeleine Wallen Bernard passed away Sept. 27, 2005, at her summer home in Sharon Springs.

Madeleine was born Oct. 18, 1916. She spent her early childhood in East Aurora, where her parents were members of the Roycroft Arts & Crafts Community.

During her professional life, she was secretary to producer/director Alfred De Liagre, to Rex Stout at the Writer’s War Board and headed up the music division of American Theater Wing, where she met her husband, singing teacher Graham Bernard.

Madeleine dedicated her life to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Meg, Katharine and Martha; her sons-in-law, Rod and Vincent; and her grandchildren, Vaughan, Greg, Nik and Sean.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Margaret Allemant

COOPERSTOWN — Margaret Dora Allemant, 92, of Cooperstown passed away Sept. 28, 2005, at Otsego Manor.

She was born July 21, 1913, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Donat L’Allemant and Marguerite Nolan.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Donald Almond of Fly Creek, Ernest Alamond of Whitney Point and Phillip Alamond of Tupper Lake; and her sister, Marie Peters of Utica.

She is survived by one brother, Daniel Almond of Whitesboro; two daughters, Margo Armstrong of Toddsville and Kathryn Croft of Hartwick; two granddaughters, Kristie and Kimberly Armstrong; and one grandson, Jeremy Croft.

Dora lived in Syracuse until 1964, when she moved to Cooperstown to be near her brother, Donald. She loved to watch the activity on Main Street from her apartment window above Sherry’s Restaurant, where she resided for more than 32 years.

She was frequently seen visiting with friends and family at Newberry’s snack bar where she spent many happy hours. She took great pride in her family and was always concerned about their happiness and well-being. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

A private service for the family will be at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown.

Helen Johnson

CAZENOVIA — Helen Johnson, 84, of Cazenovia died Wednesday at her home.

Born in Syracuse, she had lived in Cazenovia for the past 45 years.

A communicant of St. James Church, Helen was a former member of the Altar Rosary Society.

She was a former member of the Cazenovia Dance Club.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Victor, who died in 2000.

Surviving are her children, Paul D. of Cazenovia and Anne Moriarty of Oneonta; her sisters, Alice Tindall, Arlene Lawless, both of Syracuse, and Carolyn Miller of Ft. Myers, Fla.; her grandchildren, Kara Connellan and Heather Mitchell, both of Cazenovia, Colleen Moriarty of Norwalk, Conn., and Michael Johnson of Tampa, Fla.; and her great-grandchildren, Kiley, Kathleen and T.J. Connellan of Cazenovia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Church in Cazenovia.

Burial will be in St. James Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Tait Funeral Home, Inc., 2333 Fenner Road, Cazenovia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mustard Seed, care of St. James Church, 6 Green St., Cazenovia, NY 13035.

Gordon A. Douglas

GARRATTSVILLE — Gordon A. Douglas, 77, of Garrattsville died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at his home in Garrattsville.

He was born in the town of Burlington on Sept. 4, 1928, the son of Roy and Dorothy (Bolton) Douglas.

He married Mildred E. Olin in Hartwick on March 17, 1949, a marriage of more than 55 years.

Gordon was a tree farmer, truck driver and a heavy-equipment operator.

He was a member of the NRA and the Christmas tree growers’ association.

He is survived by his wife, Millie, of Garrattsville; a sister, Nadine Scrivener and her husband, Jim; a sister-in-law, Joanne Douglas Long; as well as his nieces and a nephew, Diane Gregory, LuAnne Harris, Lynne Gorton and husband Ray, Laurene Grey and husband Billy, and Christopher Douglas.

He was predeceased by a brother, Richmond L. Douglas.

There will be no calling hours.

It was Gordon’s request that services and burial be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
