Elizabeth V. (Steiger) Ahrens
ROXBURY — Elizabeth V. (Steiger) Ahrens, 67, of Grand Gorge died in Roxbury.

She was a homemaker.

She is the daughter of the late William and Edith Steiger; mother of Clifford J. and Donna Ahrens; grandmother of three; wife of the late John H. Ahrens and sister of Frederick Steiger.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Volk-Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kindermack Road, Oradell, N.J.

Cremation will be private the convenience of the family.

Visitation hours will be Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nellie M. Shaw
DELHI — Mrs. Nellie M. Shaw, 80, of Delhi, died Thursday, March 19, 1998 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born March 31, 1917 in Fergusonville, the daughter of Loretta O'Dell and Raymond Adee.

She married Charles W. Shaw on Oct. 19, 1939 at Delhi United Methodist Church. Mr. Shaw died March 8, 1996.

When she first married, she and her husband ran the Shaw Farm on Honest Brook in Delhi. Mrs. Shaw has lived in Delhi all of her married life until moving to the Hampshire House in Oneonta the last few months.

Mrs. Shaw was employed with the food services at the State College at Delhi for almost 20 years starting there in 1964. She was employed with CADI and retired from the facility dining hall. Mrs. Shaw made and decorated wedding cakes for area weddings, as well as other special occasions.

She was a member of the United Ministry of Delhi for many years as an active member.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Charles Rickard of Crawfordsville, Ind. and Phyllis and Gary Van DerLinden of Alcove; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Barbara Shaw of Franklin, Robert Shaw of Delhi and Ronald and Shirley Shaw of Delhi; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Lloyd (Anna) Tilley of Mount Vision, Mrs. Elizabeth Rowand of South Carolina; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. Phillip and Linda Adee of Schenevus; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 23 at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Main Street, Delhi. The Rev. Mark Chatterton, pastor of the United Ministry of Delhi will officiate.

Burial will be later in the family plot at the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Friends may call at their convenience on Sunday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. Family will be present from 3-6 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Ministry of Delhi, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Valentine Pochy
MORRIS — Valentine Pochy, 91, of Maple Grove, Morris, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at The Meadows in the town of Middlefield.

He was born Aug. 5, 1906 in Budapest, Hungary, the son of Bolint and Susan (Olah) Pochy.

He came to the United States through Ellis Island in 1913 and resided with family in Connecticut prior to moving to New York City where he met his wife, Susan Kubinyi. They were married in September 1938. They moved to Maple Grove, Morris, where they operated a farm along with doing electrical work and later went on to form his own electrical contracting business called "Valectric."

He was also well-known in the Butternut Valley as the Iceman, as he supplied most families in the area with ice as well as the Otsego County Fair.

He was a member of the Butternut Valley Grange and the former Otsego County Electricians Association.

His wife, Susan of many years died Dec. 7, 1986.

He is survived by children, Mrs. Sophie Dixson and her husband Perry of Morris and James Pochy and his wife Susan of Gilbertsville; three grandchildren, James R. Pochy, Jacqueline Stonier and her husband, Mark and Neal Dixson; one great-grandson, Shane Perry Stonier; a sister, Susan Boda of Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Jerry and Julius Pochy.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating.

Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the Morris Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Pearl D. Bliss
ONEONTA — Pearl D. Bliss went to be with the Lord on March 21, 1998 after a lengthy illness.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1902 on Miller Street in Oneonta, daughter of John and Daisy (Hugaboom) Hill.

After graduating from high school, she worked as a nurse at Parson's Hospital in Oneonta.

She married Lysle E. Bliss on Jan. 18, 1921 in Oneonta. In their early married years, they lived on Dutch Hill and moved to Portlandville in 1939, where she lived for the past 59 years.

Pearl was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.

She was a wonderful cook, famous for her molasses cookies, orange Jell-O and apple pies.

Pearl was the oldest living member of the Portlandville Methodist Church.

She will be remembered as a caregiver in and outside the home and for her wonderful smile and kind and generous ways.

She will be greatly missed by her family; two sons and daughters-in-law, Elmer and Shirley Bliss of Oneonta and Eugene and Elaine Bliss of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Donald Ventre of Oneonta; 23 grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Sandra Wilson; a son-in-law, George Miller; a daughter-in-law, Susan Bliss, 28 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Bernice Utter and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; her bother, Earl; sons, Lyle and John; daughter, Geraldine and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta with the Rev. Linda Bryan, pastor of the Portlandville and Milford United Methodist Churches, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The family will also be receiving friends following the funeral service at the Social Hall of the Portlandville United Methodist Church.

Edwina Arnold
MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Mrs. Edwina Arnold, 84, of Mount Dora, Fla. died Friday, March 20, 1998 at Leesburg Memorial Hospital in Leesburg, Fla.

She was born Oct. 25, 1913, the daughter of Edward and Cordelia (Sanford) Rends and is a member of the United Methodist Church of Morris.

She married Leslie Arnold of Milford Center in 1933.

Edwina was employed at one time at Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta and Victory Store in Morris.

She is survived by her husband, Leslie Arnold of Florida; one daughter, Bonnie Sue and son-in-law, Joe Jones of Orlando, Fla. and one grandson, Timothy Jones of Florida; one sister, June and brother-in-law, Leslie Crawford of Otego; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Rends of Morris and Mille Rends of Apple Valley, Calif. and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Sandy Arnold; one sister, Ida Mae Tilly of New Milford, Pa.; two brothers, Fred and Eddie Rends of Morris.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris at a later date.

For those who wish, donations may be sent to the Milford Emergency Squad in memory of Mrs. Arnold.

Gwendolyn M. Church
ONEONTA — Gwendolyn M. Church, 88, of Oneonta, died Saturday, March 21, 1998 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 28, 1909 in Kent, England, the daughter of John and Daisy (Beale) Skinner.

She married Howard R. Church on Sept. 28, 1927 in the South New Berlin Baptist Church. Mr. Church died on March 8, 1990.

Self-employed most of their life, Gwen and her husband owned and operated a Chevrolet agency in Greene from 1930-1935. Later they built the Welcome Inn in Bainbridge, which they operated for 17 years. In 1957, they came to Oneonta and built a car wash on Main Street, which they operated until the property was taken for the construction of I-88 in 1970. Also during this same period she was employed at the Metropolitan Diner in Oneonta.

Gwen was also a member of the River Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by a brother and two sisters, Jack B. Skinner of Unadilla and Betty Vastano of Vineland, N.J. and Heather Townsend of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring in the Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.

Friends may call on Tuesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, after 3 p.m. The family will be in attendance from 7-8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Association for the Blind.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Garrett O. Devenpeck
COOPERSTOWN — Garrett O. ("Sonny") Devenpeck, 77, of Toddsville, died Friday afternoon, March 20, 1998 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 14, 1921 in Schaghticoke, a son of Garry (Garrett) C. and Hattie R. (Crounse) Devenpeck.

He first married Myrtle Irene Doolittle on Nov. 18, 1945 in Cooperstown. She died June 17, 1969. He then married Mary C. Robinson on July 11, 1970 in Cooperstown.

Sonny was raised and educated in Cooperstown and then entered the United States Navy during the World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. Paul Jones and saw action in European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic and Pacific Theatres. He was honorably discharged in 1947 as a Machinists's Mate First Class.

Throughout his life, Sonny worked for Bendix Aviation in Sidney, Northrup Aircraft in Hawthorne, Calif. W.L. Taylor Oil Co. in Cooperstown and retired after working 25 years for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local No. 181 in Utica.

Sonny was a member of the Cooperstown Native Sons, the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7120 in Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Fire Department Hook and Ladder Co. No. 5 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Oneonta Lodge No. 1312. A member of the Ragged Mountain Fish and Game Club in Schroon Lake, he was an avid big game hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary of Toddsville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles R. Devenpeck and his wife Jennifer and William H. Devenpeck and his wife Anita, all of Cooperstown and Shawn Robinson and his wife, Michelle of Conklin; eight grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, William Devenpeck and his wife, Anne of Sarasota, Fla.; one nephew, Allen Devenpeck of Altamont and one cousin, Mrs. Carol Taylor of Cooperstown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Cooperstown Veterans Club on Main Street.

Interment with full military honors will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 24, 1998 from 3-4 and 7-9 p.m. when Sonny's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, R.D. 3, Box 64B, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or The Meadows Activities Fund, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 of the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lenna Dimicco
SIDNEY — Miss Lenna Dimicco, 93, of 14 Liberty St., Sidney, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 21, 1998 at The Hospital, Sidney.

Lenna was a lifelong Sidney resident and parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church.

She was born May 9, 1904 in Sidney. Miss Dimicco was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Suava Dimicco.

She is survived by four sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise Dickson of Sidney, Pauline and William McIntyre of Stuart, Fla. and Sidney, Virginia and William O'Donnell of Stuart, Fla. and Endicott and Florence Hall of Adache Junction, Ariz. Also several nieces, nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five brothers, John, John II, George, Louis and Frank and two sisters, Theresa Hardison and Mary Foy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 1998 from the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney. The Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in the spring in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Wednesday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m. A wake service will be held Wednesday evening at the funeral chapel.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838 or to The Hospital Foundation, Pearl Street, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Gary L. Elliott
SOUTH VALLEY — Mr. Gary L. Elliott, 45, passed away Saturday, March 21, 1998 at Albany Medical Center as the result of a car accident.

He was born May 16, 1952 in Cooperstown, the son of Frederick and Joyce (Hoke) Elliott.

Mr. Elliott served in the U.S. Navy from 1971-1975 and currently worked for the John Wigens Trucking Co., Cobleskill.

He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and Norman Mollen and Ruth and William Hendricks, all of South Valley; a brother, Earl Gillette of Ilion; five nieces, four nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at the Ottman Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the First Christian Church, South Valley, officiating.

Spring burial will be in the South Valley Cemetery, South Valley.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 24 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Elliott's memory may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
