Alfred N. Boutin
OTEGO — Alfred N. Boutin, 69, of Otego and formerly of Oneonta and Bennington Vt., died unexpectedly Dec. 25, 1997 at his residence.

Born Aug. 19, 1928 in Bennington, Vt., the son of Henry L. and Mary (Trombly) Boutin, he first married the former Loretta Cordes in Bennington, Vt. and later Margaret Bolst in Oneonta.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Boutin held several supervisory positions in the dairy industry with Cumberland Farms and Turedo Foods covering the northeastern United States.

Survivors include three sons, Darell Boutin of South Casco, Maine, Brian Boutin of Granville and Gerald Boutin of Hackettstown, N.J.; one daughter, Shirley Boutin of Granville; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cindy Boutin, in 1996.

Private funeral services will be held later at the convenience of the family with burial in Bennington National Cemetery, Bennington, Vt.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Crystal M. Hall
UNADILLA — Mrs. Crystal M. Hall, 70, of 51 Main St., Unadilla, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born Dec. 13, 1927 in Ames, the daughter of Henry and Susan (Anspach) Maring.

She was first married to Douglas Retallick, who died in 1961. On Sept. 22, 1962 she married Charles E. Hall in Ames.

Mrs. Hall was a graduate of Canajoharie High School and Austin's School of Cosmetology and Beauty Culture in Albany. At one time she owned and operated a beauty shop in Ames. In 1985, she and her husband relocated to Unadilla from Cherry Valley.

She was a member of the Unadilla and Wells Bridge Senior Citizens Groups and served many hours of volunteer service at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Hall of Unadilla; a sister, Alice Button of Canajoharie; two brothers, Robert Maring of Ames and Harry Maring of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Committal services will be held later at the convenience of the family in Cherry Valley Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Ruth E. Howey
ONEONTA — Mrs. Morris E. (Ruth E.) Howey, 92, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta where she was admitted Christmas evening, Dec. 25, 1997.

She was born Oct. 9, 1905 in Laurens, the daughter of James and Augusta (Persons) Woolhouse. She first married William F. Schaeffer on May 20, 1929 in Clearwater, Fla. Mr. Schaeffer died on June 8, 1957. She then married Morris E. Howey on June 17, 1972 in Oneonta. Mr. Howey died on Oct. 5, 1980.

Mrs. Howey attended school in Laurens. After moving to Oneonta she attended the "Old Normal Grade School," and after attending OHS she graduated from O.H.S. For a time after high school graduation, she did attend the Old Normal Teaching School at Oneonta.

In 1925, she and her family moved to Clearwater, Fla. In Clearwater, Fla. she worked in the offices of Tepac Oil Co. as well as Kelly Garages.

After her marriage to William F. Schaeffer, the couple returned to Oneonta where she and her late husband operated the dining room at the Oneonta Country Club for several summer seasons. During the winter months, the couple returned to Clearwater, Fla., where they worked in Schaeffer's Restaurant. After Mr. Schaeffer died she stayed in Oneonta and worked at Cross's Auto Supply Store when it was located on the former Broad Street, and later when it was located on Railroad Avenue at Oneonta.

After her marriage to Morris E. Howey, she and Morris moved to Dunedin, Fla. After his death, she returned to Oneonta in 1983 to live with her sister.

Mrs. Howey was a longtime member of The First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, as well as the Oneonta Chapter 120 D.A.R. She was, at the time of her death, a member of the Oneonta Country Club and was well known for her sticky buns. She was a former member of the Oneonta Women's Club as well as a former member of the Oneonta Business Woman's Club.

Mrs. Howey is survived by one sister, Mrs. Willard I. (Madeline) Cross of Oneonta; a niece Patricia, and her husband Richard Pindar of Oneonta; a grand niece Susan, and her husband Steven Mongillo of Oneonta; a grand nephew Stephen, and his wife Lisa Pindar of Oneonta; several great grand nieces, nephews as well as great great grand nieces and nephews. Also surviving is another close friend and cousin, Mrs. Pauline Perry of Laurens.

From her marriage to Morris E. Howey she is survived by a stepson Jack, and his wife Audrey Howey of Owego; a stepdaughter Maureen, and her husband James Greeley of Oneonta; several step grandchildren as well as several step great grandchildren; also surviving are cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Douglas W. Gray, retired Presbyterian minister of Oneonta, will officiate.

Mrs. Howey will be placed in Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await burial in the Cross-Schaeffer burial site in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Mrs. Howey's families will be present in Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, tonight from 7-9 when those who wish may call at the funeral home.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the First United Presbyterian Church (The Red-Door Church) at 381 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in memory of Mrs. Ruth E. Howey.

Jane Cecelia Mulqueen
MORRIS — Jane Cecelia Mulqueen, 89, of Morris, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born Oct. 24, 1908 in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Agnes (Lessman) DeFriesse. She was married to Matthew A. Mulqueen April 28, 1928 in the Bronx and they had been married for over 69 years.

Jane and her husband had been residents of the Butternut Valley for over 42 years. She and her husband had been employed as the caretakers at the Copes Corners Park in Gilbertsville for 16 years. In her younger years she had been very active in the Catholic Church and had also taught Sunday School at one time.

She is survived by her husband, Matthew (Matty) Mulqueen of Morris; five children, Philip Stanley Mulqueen of Kansas City, Mo., Mary A. Fontana of Lindenhurst, Joan A. O'Brian of Blanchard, Okla., Clara Mulqueen of Bradton, Fla. and Matthew A. Mulqueen Jr. of North Hills, Calif.; a brother, William DeFriesse of Connecticut; a sister, Mary Grant of Florida; twenty grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. Morris Dwyer officiating. Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. today and Tuesday at the funeral home.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Morris Emergency Squad in her memory.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Florence Mae Northrup
ST. JOHNSVILLE — Miss Florence Mae Jorthrup, 86, of St. Johnsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997 at St. Johnsville Nursing Home, St. Johnsville.

She was born May 20, 1911 in Otego, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Rogers) Northrup.

Miss Northrup was born and raised in Otego. She attended school at District 18 Schoolhouse on the West Branch of Otsdawa. She earned a nursing degree and worked at the local hospitals in New Rochelle, White Plains and Sidney. Florence had also lived in Otego and Mount Vision several years ago and had been a patient at the Otsego County Infirmary, The Meadows, for 10 years and then at Nader Towers prior to going to the St. Johnsville Nursing Home in St. Johnsville.

Florence was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.

Survivors include one sister, Margaret Martindale of Otego and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Northrup was predeceased by one sister, Charlotte LeRoy and one brother, Earl Northrup.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Willard Miller officiating.

Miss Northrup will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await burial in the spring at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., after 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 and until service time on Wednesday.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association of Central New York Chapter, 1603 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, N.Y. 13200 in memory of Miss Florence Mae Northrup.

Patricia A. Schmidt
SIDNEY — Patricia A. Schmidt, 64, of 8880 Old Kings Rd., Jacksonville, Fla., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997 at her daughter's home.

She was born Nov. 15, 1933 in Unadilla. Pat was the daughter of the late Chester and Evelyn Nutter Livingston Allen.

Patricia was employed by Shaver's Restaurant in Sidney for 18 years and later worked in the Village Coffee Shop. She moved to Florida in 1991 to live with her devoted daughter, Pam.

She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Schmidt of 8880 Old Kings Rd., Jacksonville, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Allyson Schmidt of Ludington, Mich.; three grandchildren, Meagan, Nathan and Amber; also, she is survived by close family friends, Patrick and Sandy Vaughn of Sidney. She was predeceased by one son, Blake E. Schmidt on Aug. 24, 1982.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 from the C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Rogers Hollow Cemetery, town of Unadilla.

Friends may call 7-9 tonight at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Donald W. Stanton
ONEONTA — Mr. Donald W. Stanton, 71, of Oneonta died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 25, 1997 at his daughter's home in Edmeston.

He was the son of Donald F. and Emily (Ward) Stanton. Don married the former Lois Wagner on June 19, 1944 in Carbondale, Pa.

He was a World War II United States Air Force veteran and had been employed as a machinist and assembler for Bendix Corp., Sidney, from November 1952 until his retirement Oct. 25, 1977. Prior to moving to Oneonta in 1952 Don was employed by the D and H Railroad Co. in Carbondale, Pa. He was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church and was a member of the church's Stain Glass Class. He was also a member of Local 1529 International Associaion of Machinists and Aerospace Workers at Sidney as well as serving as a trustee and on the Grievance Committee. Don was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League and also bred and raised rabbits as well as having judged them. He enjoyed collecting H.O. scale model trains as a pastime.

Don is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Wagner Stanton of Oneonta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald C. and Mona Stanton of West Laurens and Joseph W. and Barbara Stanton of Otego; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Judith) Bice of Edmeston; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Lois) Benjamin of Newhall, Calif. and Mrs. John "Jack" (Nancy) Johnston of Santa Maria, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Scott Stanton of Oneonta, Christine Stanton of Florida, Lori Mannina and Kevin Stanton both of Otego, Stephanie Ray, Richard Carey and Kimberly Anderson all of New Berlin. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Donald W. Stanton will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Stephen Heiss, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, will officiate. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 prior to the service when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Mr. Stanton will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta in the spring. The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Donald W. Stanton.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Carol A. Weich
ONEONTA — Carol A. Weich died at her home at 10 Blanchard Ave., Oneonta on Friday, Dec. 26, 1997 following a long illness.

Carol was born in Rockville Center on Oct. 27, 1934 the only child to Henry and Caroline (Curley) Weich, both of whom predeceased her.

Carol graduated from high school in Rockville and entered the convent. However, after taking her initial vows she withdrew to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated from Middletown State Hospital School of Nursing in Middletown and won a scholarship to Columbia University in New York City. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing education cum laude.

From that time on, Carol advanced rapidly in nursing and participated in various areas of nursing including psychiatry, general medicine and surgery, intensive care and cardiology while in New York City.

In the '60s she moved back to Middletown to work initially as the diretor of inservice education and later assistant director of nursing at Horton Memorial Hospital.

From there she accepted positions of director of nursing at various hospitals. In 1973 at the age of 39 while director of nursing of an 800-bed medical center, Carol became disabled from a stroke.

However, her disability did not slow her down for long. She was soon continuing her strong desire to work with and educate nurses and other health care workers and the general public in health care and the need to know legalities and rights regarding such care. She taught classes for nurses in continuing education programs at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, the State University College at Oneonta and the surrounding hospitals and nursing homes. She also taught classes to the general public as part of her participation in church programs.

Carol had many hobbies and interests and for years kept active with them. They included collecting old radio tapes, comic books and comic book histories and teddy bears. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed mysteries, American history since 1900 and biographies. She was involved in hand crafts and knitted many sweaters and painted on fabrics — such as blocks for quilts, sweatshirts and tote bags.

In the early '70s, Carol joined United Ministry Church in Delhi and had her membership transferred to Elm Park United Methodist Church when she moved to Oneonta.

Carol is survived by her longtime friend, Kay Dailey.

A service to celebrate the life of Carol Weich will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta.

The service will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen Heiss of Elm Park Church and the Rev. Rees Warring of Scranton, Pa. It has been requested that there be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Earl D. Brooks
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Earl D. Brooks, 80, of South New Berlin, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997 at The Hospital in Sidney.

Earl was born on Aug. 24, 1917 in Pine Bush. He was the son of the late Charles S. and Nancy Barse Brooks. Earl married Alberta Ray on Oct. 19, 1941 in Holmesville.

He retired from Simmonds Precision Engine Systems, Norwich. Earl also worked at Kraft in South New Berlin for eight years. He enjoyed logging and was an avid hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alberta Brooks of South New Berlin; five daughters, Marie and David Pratt of South New Berlin, Linda and Norman Eastwood of South New Berlin, Wanda and George Deak of Waterville, Doris and Rick Hoag of South New Berlin and Nancy Frankel of Oneonta; two brothers, Robert and Marjorie Brooks of Gilbertsville and Rolland and Grace Brooks of Salisbury, Md.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m. Chaplain Nelson Parks of Gilbertsville will be officiating.

Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton, in the spring.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or the fire department.

Anastasia Hyney
STARKVILLE — Anastasia Hyney, 88, passed away Dec. 20, 1997 in Monroe Regional Hospital in Ocala, Fla.

She was born June 9, 1909 in Clayville and married Spencer Hyney Sr. on April 18, 1929 in New Hartford. He died Feb. 21, 1989.

Mrs. Hyney was a dairy farmer in Starkville until retiring.

Survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, Spencer Jr. (Sid) and Laura Hyney, Robert Hyney and friend Lynette, Bruce Hyney, Jerry and Florence Hyney, Mac and Martha Hyney and Gary and Sue Hyney; four daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Dick Smith, Beverly and John Ambridge, Arlene and Gary James and Chipper (Elaine) Frasier and friend John. She has 36 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation was in Belleview, Fla. Burial will be in the spring at Fort Plain Cemetery.

Leon E. Vandermark
ONEONTA — Leon E. Vandermark, 77, of Oneonta died Dec. 30, 1997 at Fox Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 14, 1920 in Delhi, the son of Charles and Winifred (Ingalls) Vandermark. He married Ester Delello on June 28, 1942 in Oneonta.

Mr. Vandermark was a veteran of World War II, serving in the AAA division of the U.S. Army between 1942 and 1946 in the South Pacific Theater of operations on the Marianna Islands and Spain. He was discharged as a captain in 1946.

Mr. Vandermark was a graduate of Oneonta High School, class of 1936. He was an original member of the Milford Macs baseball team and was active in the city recreation softball league. He was also an avid bowler in the city Mercantile League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and fly fishing.

Mr. Vandermark owned and operated Mid City Service Station on Main Street in Oneonta between 1950 and 1970 and later became manager of the Jamesway Automotive Service Center in Oneonta having retired in 1986.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Barbara Mellucci of Ocala, Fla., Patricia and Robert Moore of Ulster Park and Denise and David Brandow of Schenevus; a daughter-in-law, Harriet Vandermark of Monticello; six grandchildren, Robert and Renee Vandermark, Stephanie and Brian Moore, Danielle and Michael Mellucci; one great-grandchild, Richard Johnson; several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Vandermark.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hartwick Seminary, officiating.

Burial will be later in the Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.
