Charlotte
Kennedy Briggs

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Charlotte Kennedy Briggs, longtime Oneonta resident, and wife of lumber dealer, Duncan S. Briggs, died Dec. 22, 2005, in her home in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mrs. Briggs would have been 98 years old on Jan. 3.

She was born in Saranac Lake in 1908, to Isabella Compton Kennedy and Alexander George Kennedy.

Mr. and Mrs. Briggs were married at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Schenectady on April 22, 1933, and lived in Oneonta until the 1980s, when they moved to Arizona.

Mrs. Briggs was active at St. James’ Episcopal Church as a member of the Vestry and Senior Warden, She also served for many years on the Board of Huntington Library and was an active volunteer at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Her brother, Lloyd Kennedy, had stores in both Oneonta and Delhi.

Mrs. Briggs is survived by her daughters, Judith B. Watson of Cleveland, Ohio, and Barbara Briggs-Letson of Sebastopol, Calif.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Local arrangements will be made by Bookhout Funeral Home.

Philip
Chester Lane

STAMFORD — Philip Chester Lane, 86, of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., and formerly of Stamford and Harrisburg, Va., passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, after a short illness in Florida.

He had lived in Lake Panasoffkee for the last 14 years and enjoyed his retirement.

He was a member of the Masons for more than 60 years, had a lifelong interest in stock car racing, was a supporter of animal rights and had a strong interest in politics.

Philip had been a salesman in both automotive and paper industries.

He was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Peters Lane, formerly of Stamford, who is now residing in Jacksonville, Fla., with their daughter, Mary Heather Lane. He is also survived by one niece and one nephew.

There were no services as requested by the family.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Lake and Sumter at 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Since the family was formerly of Stamford, cards of condolences may be sent to Betty Lane care of Mary H. Lane, 756 Rockbay Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32218.

Joseph H. Barker

UTICA — Joseph H. Barker, 48 years old, of Bridgewater, passed away Dec. 29, 2005, in Utica.

Joseph was born July 3, 1957, in Norwich, the son of Stuart and Jackie (Carpenter) Barker.

Joseph attended New Berlin Central and Edmeston Central schools.

Joseph was a handyman and carpenter. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Joseph is survived by a special friend, Lois Ennis, and her daughters, Karen Ennis and Alison (and husband Matt) Swartz. He is also survived by two daughters, Lisa and Jeff Parry of Norwich, and Jessica Leizear of Norwich; five grandchildren; four brothers, Stephen and Holly Barker, Stanley and Michele Barker, Gary Barker and Barry Barker; one sister, Sally and Jim Hodge. He is also survived by many special nieces, nephews and friends.

A calling hour will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Dakin Funeral Home LP, New Berlin, with the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church, town of Columbus, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, New Berlin.

Marjorie H. Lambrecht

UNADILLA — Marjorie H. Lambrecht went home to be with her Lord at her Unadilla home, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005.

She was born June 13, 1917, in Smithville, the daughter of Samuel Dudly Hayes and Fern (Bonner) Hayes.

She graduated from Unadilla High School in 1934 and married John Tracy "Scoop" Lambrecht in 1935 in Unadilla. She was predeceased by him in 1985. She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Russell of Venice, Fla., and Gerald of Sidney.

Marjorie was employed as a designer at Bendix/Amphenol in Sidney in the Brush Connector Group for 25 years until her retirement in 1982.

She was an avid seamstress who enjoyed making her family’s clothes, Junior Choir robes, costumes for a Tri-Town Theater production and quilts for missions with Harmony Circle of First Presbyterian Church. She also taught sewing in Adult Education for a time.

She was an artist and painter who delighted in the beauty of God’s creation and shared floral arrangements with her church family for years.

She is survived by her three daughters, Tracey Leone Teeter (Roy) of Conway, S.C., Ardis Gould of Unadilla and Kelsey Smith (John) of Baldwinsville; seven grandchildren, Terryn Compagnone (Robert) and Jason Teeter of Naples, Fla., Derrick Teeter (Christine) of Conway, S.C., Maria Houghton (Andrew) of Charlotte, N.C., Zachary Teeter (Angela) of Moravia, Sean Smith of Geneva and Ian Smith of Baldwinsville; sisters-in-law, Beverly Parker of Venice, Fla., and Harriet Hayes Slawson of Sidney; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Unadilla, with the Rev. Douglas Horne, officiating. Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88), from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, when the family will be in attendance.

Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, PO Box Z, Unadilla, NY 13849 or Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the supervision of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee, funeral directors.

Joseph Benedikt Neuer

TREADWELL — Joseph Benedikt Neuer, 73, of Treadwell passed away Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Feb. 3, 1932, in Dortmund, Germany, the son of Anton and Gertrude (Kreuschner) Neuer. He came to America in 1956.

He married Valerie Hoegler on Aug. 9, 1958, in Germany.

Joe served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.

He lived and worked on Long Island until he retired in 1988, and moved to Treadwell after 32 years of employment with Pneumatic Tool Sales and Repair in College Point, where he was a tool mechanic.

Joseph loved building, designing and working with his hands. He loved machinery, nature, music, soccer, and being with his family and friends, especially at Sunday afternoon coffee.

He was instrumental in the building of Oneonta Motor Sports and could be seen there on a regular basis.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie F. Neuer, of Treadwell; his children, Eric Neuer and his wife, Kathy, of West Oneonta, Peter Neuer of Treadwell, and Karin Elise Fields and her husband, Andy Ramage, of Oneonta; his grandson, Panther Roy Fields of Oneonta; his sister, Theresia Birnbaum and her husband, George, of Treadwell; his brother, Anton Neuer and his wife, Helga, of Germany; as well as two aunts, three nieces, and several cousins in Germany.

He was predeceased by his brother, Walter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in St. Peter’s Church in Delhi, with the Rev. Michael Flannery, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Franklin or Treadwell Emergency Squads.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home of Franklin.

Barbara A. Thomas

HARTWICK — Barbara A. Thomas, 67, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at the Countryside Nursing Home in Delhi.

Barbara was born in Brooklyn on Valentine’s Day in 1938, the daughter of Adam and Mary (Galvin) Smith.

She married Alexander A. Thomas on Oct. 2, 1944, in Hempstead. They moved to this area in 1971 and settled in Hartwick in 1978.

For a number of years, she worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a postal clerk in the Hartwick Post Office.

Barbara was an avid reader who enjoyed genealogical research and spent countless hours tracing her family’s heritage. Her interest in genealogical research was fueled in part by the deep pride she had in her husband who was a World War II combat veteran, had participated in the Normandy invasion and was wounded and disabled in the Battle of the Bulge.

Barbara was by nature a kind, nurturing and caring person. Indeed, she loved her terrier dogs so much that she was forever spoiling them and treating them as members of her family.

She was a proud member of the D.A.R. and was a member and communicant of St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alexander Thomas, on March 3, 2002.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Alexander Thomas and his wife, Dr. Polly Thomas, and their children, Robert and Todd Mayton, all of Hartwick. She is also survived by her brother, James Smith and his wife, Cecelia, of Northport; her sister, Adriane Sutton of Coventry; her sister, Janet Stark and her husband, Gerry, of Cooperstown; her sister, Patricia Pokon and her husband, William, of Hancock; as well as by her brother-in-law, Walter Chmara of Tucson, Ariz.; her sister-in-law, Gloria Smith of California; and her brother-in-law, Paul King of Coventry.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Smith; and her sister, Mary King.

A memorial service for Barbara will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, of St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

The family will be in attendance Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service to receive friends.

Committal services will be held in the spring in the National Cemetery in Saratoga.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire may make contributions in Barbara’s memory to either the Hartwick Emergency Squad, PO Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348 or to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Velma G. Banner

MARYLAND — Velma G. Banner, 92, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home in Johnson City.

She was born June 25, 1913, in Maryland, the daughter of William and Mabel (Atwell) Gill.

Velma graduated from Schenevus High School, Class of 1930, and attended business school in Binghamton.

She married James H. Banner on Nov. 8, 1936, in Maryland. He predeceased her Jan. 3, 1997.

Mrs. Banner was the Postmaster at the Maryland Post Office for more than 40 years.

She was a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Truthseekers, the Maryland Community Association and the Swinging Bees Square Dance Club in Laurens.

She is survived by her son, James W. and his wife, Bonnie Banner, of Schenevus; a daughter, Twyla B. and her husband, Paul Webb, of Clayton and Brockville, Ontario, Canada; two granddaughters, Debra and her husband, John Schmidt, of Ballston Spa and Darci Banner of Stuart, Fla.; a grandson, David L. and wife Vanessa Cushman of Watertown; two great-grandsons, James J. and Jenkin J. Schmidt; a great-granddaughter, Kylie L. Cushman; and three nieces.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Schmiedel and Theresa Snare.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lea Harding, chaplain at the Hilltop Campus in Johnson City, officiating.

Interment will be held in the Maryland Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208 or to the United Methodist Homes, Hilltop Campus, 286 Deyo Road, Johnson City, NY 13790.

The Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., in Schenevus, is serving the family.

Anna K. Mullings

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Anna K. Mullings, 103, of Cooperstown died peacefully Friday evening, Dec. 30, 2005, at The Otsego Manor.

She was born Sept. 14, 1902, in the Bronx, a daughter of Charles and Anna (Dumta) Duda.

After high school, she attended business school, and was employed as a secretary by the HJ Heinz Corporation in New York City.

On Sept. 15, 1928, she married Rayfield A. Mullings in New York City, and the couple settled on Staten Island. In 1935, the Mullings moved to White Plains where Anna was employed during World War II at a bank clearing house.

In 1948, the Mullings moved to Toddsville and for the next 21 years Anna served as a secretary for the Otsego County Farm Bureau.

In her younger years, Anna enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn and taking long walks. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting and could recall going to the movies in the Bronx, where she and a friend would sit and knit sweaters for the GIs during the war years.

Of the Catholic faith, Anna was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

Mrs. Mullings is survived by her son, Arnold R. Mullings and his wife, Shirley, of Sanford, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ray, on April 21, 1978; one sister, Mrs. August Tippel; and one brother, Mr. Charles Duda.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

The Service of Committal and burial will take place later this spring in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
