Carol M. Decker Young

Ms. Carol M. Decker Young, 58, of Gloversville, NY, died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.

She was born on May 28, 1946 in Gloversville, a daughter of Vernon and Nellie Hazzard Decker and was a graduate of Gloversville High School.
Ms. Young was a sewing machine operator, employed by Taylor Made Group, Gloversville.

She was a former member of Fremont St. United Methodist Church, Gloversville. She had an extreme love for her family, especially her grandchildren. Carol had a wonderful sense of humor and always seemed to brighten up even the worst situations. She enjoyed crocheting and watching professional wrestling.

Ms. Young is survived by one son, Harold Gero and companion Ashley Thobaben of Gloversville; three daughters, Yolanda Decker and companion, Joshua Johnson of Gloversville, Jo Lynn Moister and her husband, Chris, of Johnstown and Eva Berger of Gloversville; one brother, Earl Decker and wife Faye, of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Derrick, Matthew, Raymond, Ashanti, Sierra, Nikkali and Skyler.

There will be no calling hours; a memorial service will be held at The Salvation Army of Gloversville, 10 Spring St., Gloversville at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday with Major Warren Johnson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army of Gloversville, 10 Spring St., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Helen Eleanor Calder

Helen Eleanor Calder, age 87, died September 12, 2002, at her home on Elmwood Avenue in Gloversville.

Mrs. Calder was born October 5, 1914, in Chicago, Il. She was the daughter of Michael and Caroline Giemza Barowski.

She had attended White's Business School in Chicago and had been employed by Mars Candy Co., Chicago, Holloway Candy Co., Lord and Taylor Co. in Cleveland, Triangle Finish Corp., Gloversville Continental Mills, Bachmo Postman, St. Thomas Inc. and retired as assistant manager of State Photo in Johnstown in 1989, when it closed.
Mrs. Calder was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville, and was a religious education instructor for the former St. Mary's Church of Gloversville. She had been president of the PTA for the former Berkshire School in Gloversville.

She was married to Robert John Calder on April 17, 1943, at St. Agnes Church, Cleveland, Ohio.

Mrs. Calder is survived by her husband, Robert J. Calder of Gloversville; a son, Robert J. Calder Jr. of Fort Pierce, Fl.; a daughter Linda C. Gill of Somersworth, N.H.; a brother, Eugene Barowski of Tuscon, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church Building Fund, 149 S. Main St., Gloversville, N.Y. 12078.

Lois M. Brenan

Lois M. Brenan, 67, of Sunset Circle, Wells, NY, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after being a patient since Friday. She was born December 28, 1936 in Greenwich, NY, the daughter of the late Frederick and Amelia Angle Tefft. She was a graduate of Greenwich Central School and Plattsburgh State College.

Lois was a housewife, mother and grandmother. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wells.
Survivors include her husband, Raye Brenan, whom she married in 1961 and celebrated over 43 years of marriage with; six sons, Peter and Sandra Brenan, David and Kelly Brenan, William and Suzanne Brenan, Joseph and Rebecca Brenan, Patrick and Jessie Brenan and Michael and Jennifer Brenan. Her brother, Ralph, and Annette Tefft and thirteen grandchildren also survive her.

Friends may call Wednesday, September 15, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge Street, Northville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 16, 2004 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wells at 11 a.m. with Father Paul Kelly as celebrant. Burial will be held in St. Ann's Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Ambulance Corps of the Wells Vol. Fire Department.

James M. Spencer

James M. Spencer, 82, the loving husband of Emily Spencer, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 12, 2004. He was from Gloversville, NY until 1997, when he moved to Fruitland Park, FL, where he resided at Lake Terrace. He is survived by his wife, Emily, of 54 years; his daughter, Susanne Spencer, Paula Mackle and the late Pamela Spencer; his sister, Clemie Mercadante; grandchildren, Jessica Forgette, Crystal Nickloff, Destiny and Autumn Pearson; great-grandchildren, Jillian Forgette and Tianna Williams; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Leesburg Assembly of God Church on Sept. 15, 2004. Donations may be made to the building fund at Leesburg Assembly of God.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, S. Main St., Gloversville.

Stanley L. Brockum

Stanley L. Brockum, 73, of Fremont St., Gloversville, passed away suddenly on Sept. 11, 2004.

He was born in the town of Root on April 19, 1931, a son of Emory and Eva Schyler Brockhum.
He is survived by daughters, Donna Mecca and Patricia Wellman; and a son, Steven Brockum; a brother, George Brockhum; and two sisters, Helen Brower and Shirley Doak; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a general contractor for more than 20 years. He was a Korean War veteran. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 0137 and the VFW Post 2077.

A memorial service was held on Sept. 13. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Brockum donated his body to research at Albany Medical Center.

Donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Donald C. Pierce

Donald C. Pierce, 77, of Westfield, MA, died Tuesday at Noble Hospital. He was born September 18, 1926 in Amsterdam, NY, son of the late Nelson H. and Irene H. (Hall) Pierce and attended Gloversville, NY High School. Don was in the construction business, first with Pierce Brothers Construction from 1947-1970 and then as Don Pierce Roofing and Carpentry from 1970-1980. Don was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Westfield, MA for forty-six years, serving as a deacon, member of its Men's Club and a member of its Property Committee, where he used his construction background to maintain and improve its historic physical structure. Don was an avid deer hunter at his brother's camp in upstate NY, where he continued to meet with success well into his 70s. His loyalty to the Boston Red Sox spanned almost 50 years. While he occasionally enjoyed a game at Fenway, he almost never missed one on radio or television. His reputation from a lifetime in the building business, with his father, later his brothers and finally with is son Kurt, was that of a skilled carpenter who treated his customers with honesty and dependability. Don believed in and practiced the ideals of a good citizen. He treated everyone with his characteristic friendliness and thoughtfulness. He was, in short, a proud American and a good Christian. Most especially, he cared for and loved his family in the deepest possible way, and they admired and loved him and always will. He was a U.S. Naval veteran of WW II, serving in the Pacific Theater and a member of American Legion Post 454 in Westfield. Don enjoyed golfing and was a member of Edgewood Golf Course and also worked at Southwick Country Club. He was a delegate to the several state Republican Conventions. Don leaves his wife of fifty-six years, Mary Jane (Stevens) Pierce; and his sons, Steven D. Pierce and Kurt M. Pierce and his wife, Susan, both of Westfield, MA. He also leaves a brother, Herbert Pierce of Gloversville, NY; a sister, Beatrice Fanella of Bradenton, FL; two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jordan Pierce and many nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by three brothers, Roy, Wilson and Gerald Pierce; and two sisters, Marion Galusha and Ramona Rowback. A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 18 Broad St., Westfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Mass Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory to the First Congregational Church, 18 Broad St., Westfield, MA 01085.

Harold C. 'Holly' Richardson

Harold C. "Holly" Richardson, 87, of Mayfield, N.Y., died Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at the Fulton County Residental Health Care Facility following a long illness. He was born October 30, 1916 in Mayfield, N.Y. The son of the late Clyde and Effie Parker Richardson.

Harold was an operating Engineer for Local Union 106, Albany. He was also a glove worker for many years.
He was a lifetime area resident, a member of the Local 106 Engineers of Albany and a former Mayfield Fireman. He was also former Justice of the Peace in Mayfield for twelve years.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Coulombe Richardson whom he married December 6, 1946. His son; Gerald Richardson and wife Lorrie of Mayfield, his daughter; Hollie Dorman of Mayfield, his sister; Gertrude Patterson of Corey, Pa. Three grandchidlren; Sarah Dorman of Wilmington, NC, Chad Dorman of Mayfield, and Alissa Szumowski of Mayfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. He was predeceased by his brother Gerald Richardson and his sisters Irene VanNostrand, Evelyn Flood, and Ruth Herdman.

Friends may call on Thursday, September 16, 2004 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Home where funeral services will be held on Friday, September 17, 2004 at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Leonard Gordon

Leonard Gordon died quietly at his home in Guilderland of heart failure on August 11th of this year. He was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 15, 1917. He received his bachelor's degree from UCLA and his master's and doctorate in psychology from Ohio State University. His academic positions included Boston University, the University of New Mexico and the State University at Albany, where he retired as a professor of educational psychology and statistics in 1987. He was also employed at the Army and Navy Personnel Research bureaus in Washington, D.C. and San Diego. He was the author of many articles, three books and personality and values psychological tests published throughout the world.

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association, the International Association of Applied Psychology, the American Educational Research Association and the National Council for Measurement in Education.

He served in WW II as a navigator of B-17s.
He is survived by his wife, Katharine Burton Gordon, a Gloversville native, and his son, Jeffrey.

Gregory Allen Getman
Wednesday, September 18, 2002
Gregory Allen Getman, 13, of 23721 Cemetery Road, Felts Mills, died Monday evening. He was involved in an ATV accident.

Born in Watertown on May 14, 1989, son of Dayton A. and Margaret C. Warehime, he was currently an 8th-grade student at Carthage Augustinian Academy. He enjoyed fishing, played modified baseball for Immaculate Heart Central School in Watertown and was an alter server at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage.

He is survived by his parents and his brother, Christopher, age 16, an 11th-grade student at Carthage Central High School and his sister, Katelyn, age 10, a student at CAA. Also surviving is his maternal grandfather, Ralph Warehime, Dolgeville, and his paternal grandparents, Dayton F. and Bessie L. Getman, St. Johnsville. His maternal grandmother, Joyce Warehime, died on March 11, 1998.
Funeral Mass for Mr. Getman will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 20, at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, with the Rev. George F. Maroun, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Fical Cemetery, St. Johnsville. Visitation will be held at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, 500 State St., Carthage, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations can be sent to the Carthage Augustinian Academy, 317 West St., Carthage, N.Y. 13619.

Robert F. Spraker

Mr. Robert F. Spraker, 67, of Rockwood, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at home after a long illness.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Cremation will be in Vale Crematory, Schenectady.

Charles L. Flint Sr.

Charles L. Flint Sr., age 74, of Second St., Gloversville, died Thursday evening, September 18, 2003 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville following a short illness.

He was born July 22, 1929 in Gloversville, the son of Albert and Helen Reynolds Flint. He served in the Army from April 13, 1951 to March 25, 1953 during the Korean War.

Mr. Flint was employed by Karg Brothers Tannery, Peerless Tanning, Pan American Tanning, and last by Colonial Tanning Corp. He was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, V.F.W. Post No. 2077 and a former member of American Legion Post No. 137, all of Gloversville.
On June 21, 1951, he married Ruth R. Derrico, who survives.

He is also survived by four children, Thomas Flint, Linda Thompson and Charles L. Flint Jr. of Gloversville and Tammy Gallt of Fonda; three brothers, Everett Flint, Fred Flint and Elwood "Chubby" Flint, all of Gloversville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Larry Flint, Raymond Flint and Albert R. Flint Sr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a player service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Robert W. Powhida officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Research Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38103.

Edna B. Harrison

Edna B. Harrison, 76, of Pinewood Lane, Ballston Spa, died Sunday, September 1, at her home.

She was born in Saratoga Springs, January 21, 1926, the daughter of Scott W. and Edith Brown Sr. She was a graduate of the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse at the former Benedict Memorial Hospital and Benedict Health Center in Ballston Spa for many years. She was a school nurse at the Ballston Spa Middle School and later worked in a private practice, retiring in 1988. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Ballston Spa, surving on the church council and as church financial secretary. Mrs. Harrison was a member of the United Methodist Women and in 1995 was named Woman of the Year. She was also a member of the Ballston Area Seniors.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Guy A. Harrison.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Harrison of Saratoga Springs, Lynne Blake and her husband Jeff of Ballston Spa; son Dr. Wayne S. Harrison and his wife Kathy of Gloversville; sister Eileen Murtlow of Scotia; brother Scott W. Brown Jr. of Ballston Spa; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, 101 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa. Burial will follow in the Ballston Spa Cemetery.

Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Armer Funeral Home, 39 East High St., Ballston Spa.

Arthur M. Fleming

Arthur M. Fleming, 102, of Smith Street, Canajoharie, died on Friday, August 29, while in the presence of his family, following a brief illness. Mr. Fleming was born on January 21, 1901, in Johnstown, and was the son of Patrick J. Fleming and Delia Davin Fleming.

He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1919, and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from New York University in 1923. He was employed as an accountant for Beech Nut Co., in Canajoharie, for 40 years before retiring in 1967. He had been previously employed as an accountant for General Electric International in Schenectady.

From 1966 to 1970, he served as mayor of the village of Canajoharie. He was a former treasurer and member of the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. Mr. Fleming also held memberships at the Exempt Volunteer Fire Department, the Beech-Nut 25 year Club, and was a former dispatcher for Mid-country Volunteer Ambulance Company. Mr. Fleming was an avid hunter until the age of 95.
On August 10, 1929, he married Genevieve R. Hyde Fleming in Saratoga Springs. His wife died on April 7, 1991. Mr. Fleming had five daughters. One, Joan Swain, died on November 9, 1995. Surviving daughters are Marilyn J. Bellinger, of Canajoharie; Phyllis A. Mallery, of Sharon Springs; Lois J. Fleming, of Milwaukee Wis., and Janice A. Webb, of Charlotte, N.C. Fleming leaves seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great, great grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie. Rev. Gail Wolling, Pastor of St. John's & St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Canajoharie, will be officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Friends may call the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn Swears

Mrs. Evelyn Swears, 95, of Maple Knoll Apartments, Johnstown, died Saturday, September 21, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a brief illness.

She was born August 5, 1907 in Johnstown, the daughter of Jay Stanley and Cora Van Deusen Baird.

Mrs. Swears was a 1925 graduate of Johnstown High School.
She was employed for a time with the former Knox Gelatin and later was a homemaker.

Mrs. Swears was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, and Daughters of the American Revolution, Wells House Auxiliary and the Women's Craft Group at the church.

On June 9, 1928 she married Alton F. Swears, he died July 1, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Warren Swears of New Port Richey, FL and Stanley Swears of Franklin, Delaware Co.; two daughters, Elizabeth Pemrick of Fultonville and Carolyn Adey of Drexel Hill, PA; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was predeceased by one son, Channing A. Swears, who died May 27, 1978.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church, 1 West Montgomery Street, Johnstown with Rev. Lauretta Dietrich officiating.

Friends and family may call prior to the service on Wednesday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Johnstown Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 523, Johnstown, New York 12095; Christ Lutheran Church; or to the charity of choice.

Robert E. Kovarovic

Mr. Robert E. Kovarovic, 84, of Johnstown, N.Y., went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2003. He was born on September 19, 1919 in Johnstown, the son of Stephen and Louise Simkovic Kovarovic. Mr. Kovarovic graduated from Johnstown High School in 1938. He was first employed as a machinist for the General Electric Corp. in Schenectady. Mr. Kovarovic was a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served in the Pacific Theater of WW II from 1942 until 1945. Upon his return, he worked again for General Electric for seven years and then joined the Greater Johnstown School District as a custodian and continued until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Kovarovic was a lifetime member of St. Anthony's Church, a member of the choir for over 60 years and served on the church council and maintenance committee. He was also a member of the Gloversville American Legion Post and V.F.W. Post 2077 where he served as Quarter Master. For many years, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Mr. Kovarovic was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener and bowled with several local leagues.

He is survived by his wife, the former Helen E. Valachovic of Johnstown, whom he married on Jan. 13, 1945; a daughter, LuAnn Danboise and her husband Ron of Johnstown; and two sons, Robert S. Kovarovic and his wife JoAnn of Warner Robins, GA. and Thomas K. Kovarovic and his wife Mary of Lufkin, Texas. He is also survived by a brother, John Kovarovic of Rensselaer, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ehle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12 noon at St. Anthony's Church on Thursday. Interment will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Johnstown, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to JAVAC.

Leah Rose Myers

Leah Rose Myers, age 60, of Honeywell Corners Road, Broadalbin, died Sunday morning, September 21, 2003 at home following a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio on July 3, 1943, a daughter of Loran J. and Rose Marie Polokovics Heys and attended school in Ohio. She lived in Quantico, Va. for a time where she was to meet her future husband. She moved to Scotia and later to Hagaman. In 1968, Mrs. Myers moved to Broadalbin. Upon retirement, she enjoyed spending winters in Lake Wales, Fla.

Mrs. Myers was employed at the former Myzal's Market in Broadalbin. She later worked at Amsterdam Print & Litho. Mrs. Myers was employed as a bus driver and aide with the Broadalbin-Perth School District, retiring in December 1994.
She was a member of the Broadalbin United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school at one time.

Mrs. Myers was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Broadalbin and served as treasurer several years ago.

She enjoyed playing bingo but was most content spending time with her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Fredrick Heys.

Survivors include her husband, Robert C. Myers Sr. whom she married in Washington, D.C. on July 28, 1962; three sons, Robert C. Myers Jr. and his wife Sheri of Lake Wales, Fl., William P. Myers and his companion Angel Miller of Rotterdam, and Joseph L. Myers and his wife Deandra of South Glens Falls; a very special niece and her husband, Cindy and Donald McClarren of Broadalbin; a special nephew, Adam Kronour of Cucamonga, Ca.; five brothers, James Heys, Alan Heys, Edward Heys, Loran Heys Jr., all of Dayton, Oh. and John Heys of Saugas, Ca.; a sister, Darnella Abrams of Cucamonga, Ca.; eight grandchildren, Amber, Courtney, Christopher, Ashley, Robert, Nathaniel, Matthew and Noah; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation was performed at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Broadalbin United Methodist Church, 67 North Main Street, with the Rev. John Chesney and the Rev. R.W. Williams co-officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice, in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin.

Jim L. Hogan, 59, of Pickle Hill Rd., Ft. Plain, died Wednesday evening at his home after being stricken.

Born on September 20, 1944 in Little Falls, NY, he was the son of Leonard and Mary Hibbard Hogan. He was a lifelong Ft. Plain resident and attended local schools.

Mr. Hogan was employed as a bus driver and in maintenance for over 28 years by the Ft. Plain School District.
Mr. Hogan was of the Methodist faith.

He was an avid old car enthusiast, enjoyed working on old cars and was of the Good Guys Old Car Club.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy M. Bowler Hogan, whom he married on May 20, 1966; two sons, Toby J. Hogan of Johnstown and Todd M. Hogan and his wife Heather of Ft. Plain; a sister, Cristy L. Hogan of Amsterdam; three brothers, Joseph Hogan of Ft. Plain, Gary Hogan of St. Johnsville and Ronald Hogan of Ft. Plain; three sisters, Jean Hogan of Lassellsville, nY, Joyce Humphrey of Little Falls and Mary Hogan of Lassellsville; five grandchildren, Chad, Paige, Connor and Hallie Hogan, all of Ft. Plain and Keyana Hogan of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. James R. Fry officiating. Burial will take place in Freys Bush Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service or the Ft. Plain Volunteer Fire Department.
