Ignatius J. "Iggy" Duchala
Friday, October 03, 2003
Ignatius J. Duchala "Iggy", 80, of Parkwood Ave., Johnstown, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a brief illness.

Born May 19, 1923 in Lansford, Pa., the son of Stephen and Anastasia Hacko Duchala. He was a graduate of Summit Hill High School in Lansford, Pa. in 1941, where he won four letters in football being offered scholarships at Notre Dame and Penn State until an injury in his senior year. He also participated in playing basketball and baseball.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 before moving to Johnstown in 1947. He was employed as a butcher at Lorence's Market, then by Simco Leather in Johnstown, retiring in 1978 due to a disability.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church. He was inducted into the Carbon County Area Chapter Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 in Pennsylvania.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anna Jurica Duchala; his children, Frank Duchala and his wife Debbie of North Kingstown, RI, Kathleen Delmage of Madison, WI, Maryann Russitano and her husband Tony of Caroga Lake, John Duchala and his wife Cindy of Elm Grove, WI; his grandchildren, Amy Ault, Meredith Delmage, Kaitlin Russitano, Adelyn Duchala, Adam Russitano, Todd Duchala and Patrick Duchala.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church with Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to JAVAC or the charity of your choice.

Margaret Eleanor (Grogan) McKenzie

Margaret Eleanor (Grogan) McKenzie, 89, of North Hudson, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Mrs. Grogan was born March 29, 1914, in Mineville. She was the daughter of the late John Francis and Mary (Ryan) Grogan. She had lived the last 63 years in North Hudson with her husband, Milton "Pete" McKenzie, who predeceased her.

Along with her late husband, Eleanor owned and operated trucking, construction, and sawmill businesses. They also developed and operated the Northway Exit 29 Campsite on the Schroon River.
Eleanor graduated from the Mineville High School and Plattsburgh Normal School. She taught elementary education at Johnson Pond School (a one-room schoolhouse) in North Hudson.

Eleanor was active in various organizations. She had been a member of the Schroon Lake Central Board of Education, Girl Scout Council, Home Bureau, Schroon Lake Historical Society, and a member of the Board of Elections for the Town of North Hudson for over 60 years. She was named Citizen of the Year for the Town of North Hudson in 1988.

In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was also predeceased by her sisters, Aileen Newell and Yvonne Michalak, and her brothers, John F. Grogan and Mark Grogan.

Survivors include her children, Daniel McKenzie of Severance, Yvonne Major and her husband, Alfred of Johnstown, Margaret (Pidy) Carboy and her husband, William of Chestertown, Cathy Cleveland and her husband, Wayne of Corinth, and Peter and his wife Lori of Mascoutah, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Schroon Lake, with the Rev. Richard Sturtz, officiating.

The Rite of Committal will follow at Schroon River Cemetery.

The family will receive family and friends at the North Hudson Firehouse immediately following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to the North Hudson Volunteer Fire Department, North Hudson, NY 12855, or to the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.

Arrangements are under the direction of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward.

Beverly J. Pickering

Beverly J. Pickering, 28, of Stone Arabia Road, Fonda, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at home after being stricken.

She was born January 31, 1974 in Amsterdam.

Beverly was a 1993 graduate of Fonda-Fultonville High School.
Survivors include her mother, Beverly Flansburg Pickering of Fonda, her father, Curtis Pickering of Johnstown; one sister, Debbie Pickering of Johnstown; two brothers, Ted and Tim Pickering, both of Fonda; stepgrandmother, Jeanie Flansburg of Johnstown; maternal grandmother, Lucille Snell of Canajoharie; and stepgrandfather, Otis Snell of Canajoharie; one niece, Shauna Pickering; and one nephew, Jacob Epting.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Harry Flansburg; and great-grandmother, Nellie Flansburg.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Friends and family may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled Americans Association.

Vivian J. Smith

Miss Vivian J. Smith, formerly of Franklin Street, Gloversville, died Friday, October 3, 2003 at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, where she had resided since July. She was 85 years of age.

She was born June 11, 1918 in Gloversville, the daughter of Edward and Grace Allen Smith. Miss Smith was employed in the office of the Herman A. Carbonnelli Agency in Gloversville for over 30 years. She attended the First Presbyterian Church, Gloversville.

She is survived by her niece Marilyn R. Urbiss and grandnephew Brent Richard Smith, both of Richfield Springs, and special neighbors Ken & Charlotte Hoover of Gloversville.
Miss Smith was predeceased by her brother Vernon E. Smith and nephew Richard R. Smith.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with the rev. Christopher Hamm officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Pamelia J. Warner

Pamelia J. Warner, 77, of Timberline Drive, Speculator NY passed away October 3, 2003, at home under the care of Mountain Valley Hospice.

She was born December 31, 1925, the eldest daughter of Robert and Iva Osborne of the Osborne Inn. Pam graduated from Lake George High School and received her college degree from Cornell University. She married Donald F. Warner of Higgins Bay on June 14, 1947. They had three daughters, Donna, Carol and Barbara.

Pam is survived by her husband, Don; two daughters, Carol Dorr of Higgins Bay, NY and Barbara Schulman of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; a sister, Marie Perkins of Speculator, NY; a brother, Robert T. Osborne Jr. of Johnstown, NY; four nieces and nephews, Eddie and Sharon Perkins, and Rob and Cathy Osborne; five grandchildren Corey and Leigh Lewis, Matt and Eric Dorr, and Alex Schulman.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main Street, Gloversville, NY 12078. Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Home.

Harry A. Brower

Harry A. Brower, 82, formerly of Mayfield and Johnstown, died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam, NY.

He was born July 31, 1920 in the town of Mayfield, the son of Jacob and Lydia VanSlyke Brower. He graduated from high school and later served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations. He was a glove cutter, employed by the former Templeton Glove Company of Fonda for over 25 years. He later worked at Conroy Glove Co., Johnstown.

Mr. Brower was a former member of Cranberry Creek Community Church of Mayfield and the First Baptist Church of Johnstown.
He was married April 13, 1946 to Margaret VanAntwerp who survives and also resides at the Wilkinson facility in Amsterdam.

He is also survived by two sisters, Hilda VanNostrand of Mayfield and Mildred Blowers of Amsterdam; several nieces and nephews, including Barbara Warschawski, Susan Dupras, Janice Born, Shirley Weiemiller and Richard Blowers; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Glenn Brower and Robert Brower; and by his sister, Esther Brower.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Monday. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, 4988 State Hwy. 30, Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Donald H. Colby Jr.

Donald H. Colby Jr., 36, of State Highway 30A, Gloversville, died Friday evening, Oct. 4, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. He was injured earlier that evening in an automobile-pedestrian accident.

He was born Dec. 26, 1965 in Gloversville, the son of Donald Sr. and Beverly Romaine Colby. He was a 1983 graduate of Gloversville High School. He was recently employed at Dean's Hot Dogs of Gloversville.

Mr. Colby was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. He enjoyed playing volleyball, swimming and fishing, and was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.
He is survived by his mother, Beverly Romaine Colby of Gloversville; father, Donald H. Colby Sr. of Gloversville; step-brothers, Eric Szabo and Leonard St. Andrews; step-sister, Holly Szabo; aunts and uncles, Josephine and Fred Ward, William and Katherine Romaine, Walter and Florence Romaine, Steven Romaine, Evelyn and Keith Dutcher, Ethel and Babe Meher, Robert Romaine, Leonard and Laura Dutcher, James Romaine, John and Francis Romaine, and Ella Smith. Also surviving are his close friends: Valorie Petruccelli; and Frank, Sara and Kristina Fosnmire.

He was predeceased by his uncle, Richard Romaine, and his aunt, Helen Romaine.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. David L. Tressic, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Irwin J. Dorfman

Irwin J. Dorfman, 78, of 14 Cedarbrook Crescent and also of Plant City, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 at his home.

He was born May 27, 1924 in New York City, son of Maxwell and Rose Gutta Dorfman. He attended Gloversville High School and Syracuse University and served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. On Sept. 4, 1948, he married Alice Turner in Utica and they celebrated their 54th anniversary last month. Mr. Dorfman worked at Griffis Air Force Base from 1947 to 1988 and retired as a management analyst.

He attended St. Paul's Catholic Church in Whitesboro, St. Batholomew's Church in Old Forge and St. Clements Church in Plant City. He was also a member of the Shamrock Golf Club, the Thendara Golf Club and the Friday Night Couple's League at Domenico's Golf Club for many years. He held an aircraft pilot's license and was a member of the Griffis Air Force Base Aero Club. He also called and taught western square dancing for 23 years at several local dance clubs. He enjoyed time spent at his camp at Okara Lake over the years.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Phyllis Dorfman Faber and her fiance, Thomas Gorman of Charlotte, N.C., Diane Whorton and her husband, David, of Matthews, N.C., and Carole Dorman Fedor and son-in-law, Gary Fedor of Charlotte; a granddaughter who was like a daughter, Kari Faber Case and her husband, Cullen, and a great-grandson, Harrison Case, all of Charlotte. He also leaves three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Jane Gerling of Utica, Cindy Turner of Remsen and Harry and Betty Turner of Clinton; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins; and two special family friends, John Chapman of Indianapolis, and Wayne Haupt of Charleston, S.C.

The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. from the Friedel, Williams, Corale & Edmunds Funeral Home, 100 Main St., Whitesboro, and at 11:30 a.m. at Paul's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Westernville Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. Whitestown Post 1113 will meet at the funeral home Sunday at 7 p.m.

Friends may consider the American Heart Association or Hospice Care in his memory.

Walter E. 'Dimage' Harrington

Walter E. "Dimage" Harrington, 76, of Northville entered into rest on Oct. 6, 2002 at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

Walter was born June 8, 1926, the son of Walter and Ida Horton Harrington. He was a lifelong resident of Northville. Walter married Helen M. Stuart on Nov. 13, 1948.

He served in the Army from 1945-1947 as a technician fifth grade and was a member of the Sacandaga Post 1076 American Legion, Northville. Walter graduated from Northville Central School in 1943 and worked for over 30 years at area glove shops as a glove cutter, retiring in 1989. Walter loved to attend school sports events and picking fruits and vegetables in season.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Helen M. Harrington, a daughter, Carol A. Harrington of Northville, N.Y.; four sons, James S. (Candee), William J. and Dennis E. (Cheryl) of Northville and Michael A. (Elaine) of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; one sister, Beverly (Starks) Goodrich of Northville, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda Quick, a sister, Shirley Williams, and his parents, Walter and Ida Harrington.

The family will receive family and friends on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at the Northville Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tabitha Holmes-Hawks

Tabitha Holmes-Hawks, 28, of Prospect Ave., Gloversville, died Friday evening, Oct. 3, 2003 at Glens Falls Hospital, after a short illness.

She was born March 29, 1975 in Gloversville, NY, the daughter of Frederick and Yuvonne Rumrill Williams. She graduated from Gloversville schools.

Tabitha worked in the Boulevard school cafeteria.
She was of the of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by her parents, Yuvonne Rumrill and Frederick Williams; three sisters, Starsky Huddleston of Gloversville, Crystal Miles of Gloversville and Amanda Williams of Gloversville; one brother, Nicolas Williams of Gloversville; her grandmother, Doris Holmes of Gloversville; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown with Rev. R.W. Williams, chaplain of Mountain Valley Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Thomas J. Catucci

Mr. Thomas J. Catucci, 76, of Lee Ave., Gloversville, died Sunday, October 6, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after being stricken at home.

He was born June 27, 1926 in Little Falls, the son of Santo and Carmela Greco Catucci.

Mr. Catucci was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Johnstown, where he served as Eucharist minister and lector. He was a member of the Johnstown 50 Plus Senior Citizens, the Johnstown American Legion Post 0472.
On April 10, 1945 he enlisted with the 6th Marine Division, G Company, Fourth Marines (Raiders), during WW II from Guadalcanal to Okinawa serving primarily in the 30 caliber machine gun squad. He blew first colors on Japan when the 4th Marines made the initial landing August 30, 1945. He was discharged June 5, 1946. Upon relief from active duty he held the rank of field music corporal.

Mr. Catucci was employed as an insurance salesman for Metropolitan Insurance and Prudential Insurance. He was later employed with Lexington Center in Johnstown for 17 years and was also worked as an attendant at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude DiGiacomo Catucci, whom he married August 10, 1945; four sons, Joseph M. and his wife, Judith A. Catucci of Poughkeepsie, James A. and his wife, Cathy L. Catucci of Gloversville, John G. and his wife, Victoria H. Catucci of Amsterdam and Paul D. and his wife, Joan A. Catucci of Johnstown; one daughter, Maria T. and her husband, William L. Keller III of Gloversville; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Bonnie L. Catucci in 1973; one brother, Frank Greco Catucci; and a granddaughter, Jaime Lynn Catucci.

A prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown followed at 10:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial at the Immaculate Conception Church, 1 Warren Street, Johnstown with Rev. James Fitzmaurice as celebrant.

Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial with full military honors will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or to the WW II War Memorial.

Donald H. Colby Jr

Dennis D. Duff
Monday, October 07, 2002
Dennis D. Duff, 94, formerly of Gloversville, died Sunday at the Pine View Commons, Johnstown. Born June 7, 1908 in Wheelerville, PA, he was the son of Richard M. and Emillie Wheeler Duff. He graduated from Shunk High School in Sullivan County Pennsylvania and later attended a General Electric technical course receiving certification as an industrial engineer.

Mr. Duff was employed by the Sperry Rand Company as an industrial engineer from 1937 until retiring in 1970. Mr. Duff was a member of the Bleecker Community Methodist Church, the Riverside Methodist Church of Elmira, NY and the Union Masonic Lodge No. 95 of Elmira. He was an avid button and elephant collector.

In 1940, Mr. Duff married the former Helen Buck. She predeceased him in 1985. Two brothers, Marcus and Garnet Duff and four sisters, Florence Kane, Mary Oldstead, Eunice Dickerson and Lucille Beamesderfer also predeceased him. He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m. A Masonic ritual will be held on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. with the Rev. David C. Newkirk, pastor of the Bleecker Community Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will take place on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bleecker Community Methodist Church.

Preston H. Simons

Preston H. Simons, 87, of Main Street, Wells, died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home following a long illness. He was born in Wells, N.Y. February 10, 1915, the son of John and Clara Gardner Simons. He was a 1935 graduate of Wells High School and a lifetime resident of the area.

Mr. Simons was employed by the NYSDOT in Wells retiring in 1982. He was Wells Town Justice for 35 years. He was a member of the Fish House Masonic Lodge in Northville. He was a member of the Royal Arch Masons/Scottish Rites. He was a member of the NYS Magistrates Association. He was a charter member of the Wells Fire Co. He was a member of the Wells Fish and Game Club. He was a former member of the Cooperative Board in Johnstown when BOCES first started in 1967. He was a member of the Wells school board for 10 years. He was the recipient of the Hamilton Co. 2002 award for outstanding contribution by a senior.

On Nov. 2, 1940, he married Beatrice Mead, who survives. He is also survived by two sons, Robert and James Simons of Wells, N.Y.; one daughter, Nancy Daigler of Port Charlotte, Fl.; one brother, Edward Simons of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him.
Friends may call Tuesday, October 8, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Service, where a Masonic Ritual will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Douglas Lathrop officiating. Burial will be in Algonquin Cemetery, Wells. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Fire Department.

Edna C. Welsh

Miss Edna C. Welsh, 104, resident of the Fulton County Health Care Facility, died Saturday evening, October 5, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital with her family by her side.

Miss Welsh was a lifelong resident of Gloversville; taught in Gloversville Enlarged School District for many years; and was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

Her survivors include Robert Welsh of Gloversville, nephew; Mary Ann Popp of Ephratah, niece; Al Popp of New Jersey, great-nephew; Ann Savage of Northville, great-niece; and Alexandre Popp of New Jersey, great-great-nephew.
There will be no calling hours as Miss Welsh has made an anatomical gift of her body to Albany Medical College.

Sharon Bushen

Sharon Bushen, age 52, of Gloversville, died Sunday at her residence. Born August 13, 1951 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Warren and Anna May Baird Rulison. She attended Gloversville schools and was a lifelong area resident.

Ms. Bushen retired from Pioneer Windows of Gloversville and attended St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church.

She is survived by one son, Todd Jackson of Gloversville; four daughters, Kathy Stuart of Houghton, NY, Renee Jackson of Johnstown, NY, Tina Murray of Gloversville, NY and Lori Jackson of Gloversville, NY; seven brothers, Gary Baird of Gloversville, Jeffrey, Warren "Buddy," Martin and Dale Rulison, all of Gloversville, Ricky Rulison of Texas and Bryan Rulison of Johnstown; seven sisters, Ellen Johnson of Gloversville, Peggy Tolson of Amsterdam, Lora Ferrara of Gloversville, Deanna Herrick of Sheboygan, WI, Lois McRedmond of Johnstown, Valerie Rulison of Gloversville and Jane Cool of Johnstown; 17 grandchildren; nieces; nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts and uncles.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys M. Hill

Mrs. Gladys M. Hill, 85, of State Highway 29, Rockwood, died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at home after being stricken.

She was born March 30, 1918 in Ephratah, the daughter of the late William and Ethel Christman Heroth.

Mrs. Hill was employed at the former Leon F. Swears Glove Company, Knox Gelatin and Coleco until her retirement.
She was a member of the Ephratah Historical Society, R.G.L. Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and served as an election inspector for the town of Ephratah.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Hill, whom she married September 1, 1939; two sons, Ronald C. (Elaine) Hill of St. Johnsville and Larry A. (Lois) Hill of Mayfield; two brothers, Clifford Heroth of St. Johnsville and Milton Heroth of Rockwood; three grandchildren, James A. Hill, Michele Hill and Tracey Hill; one great granddaughter, Jasmine Jolene Hill; nieces; nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Austin, Clayton, Harlan and Olen Heroth; and one sister, Beatrice Duesler.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Friends and family may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Ephratah Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to R.G.L. Volunteer Fire Company or to the Cranberry Creek Community Church.
