Wilma Mildern
September 2, 1996
Wilma E. Mildern, 81, of Lakeview Road, Broadalbin, died Monday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility where she had resided for the past two months.
Born Dec. 9, 1914 in Georgetown, Ill., she was the daughter of Elmore R. and Laura Sprouls Sheets and was educated in local schools. She resided in Perth since 1945 and moved to Broadalbin five years ago.
Mrs. Mildern worked as a baker and cashier in the cafeteria at the former Perth Central School for 13 years. She later worked in the paint department at Mohawk Finishing Products Inc., Amsterdam, retiring in 1977.
She attended the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam and was a member of the Perth Senior Citizens.
She married Alford L. Mildern on March 21, 1945. He died Jan. 30, 1976.
Survivors include a son, Louis R. Mildern of Broadalbin, two daughters, Sally A. David of Perth, and Donna S. Mildern Casady of Sante Fe, N.M.; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Perth Cemetery with the Rev. Patricia A. Bush officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., Broadalbin.
Anthony Slezak

Anthony N. Slezak Sr., 79, of Truax Road, Amsterdam, died Sunday afternoon at Glens Falls Hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1917 in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Josephine Grybos Slezak. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Amsterdam High School.
During World War II, Mr. Slezak served in the Army and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
He was the plant manager for Bradley Lumber Co. in Warren, Ark., from 1946 to 1958. Later, he was the regional equipment manager for the New York State Department of Transportation in Utica, before retiring in 1982. He was an avid gardener and a master chef.
Mr. Slezak was a member of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman. He was also a member of AARP and past president of the Lions Club in Warren, Ark.
He married Bernice K. Madej on May 3, 1942. She died Jan. 5, 1964.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Polly) Smith Slezak, whom he married Feb. 13, 1965; three sons, Anthony N. Slezak Jr., of Galway; Andrew L. Slezak, of Mayfield; and Michael A. Slezak, of New York City; five daughters, Barbara S. Burnett, Burke, Va.; Dr. Nancy S. Knudsen, Amsterdam; Katherine M. Slezak, Amsterdam; Deborah A. Slezak, Hagaman; Rebecca A. Slezak, Amsterdam; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one sister, Winifred Petroski of Amsterdam; three brothers, Raymond Slezak, Rotterdam; Chester Slezak of Amsterdam; and Norbert Slezak, also of Amsterdam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church.
Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the National Audubon Society or to St. Stephen's Church.
Mildred Pawlowski
September 1, 1996
Mrs. Mildred Pawlowski, 84, of Reid Street, Amsterdam, died Sunday evening at St. Mary's Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born Feb. 22, 1912 in Amsterdam, she was a daughter of the late Ignacy and Helen Trzeciakowski Kowalski. She was educated locally and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Pawlowski was employed by the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. in the Finishing Department. She was also a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
She married Thaddeus (Ted) Pawlowski on June 17, 1939.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Robert G. Pawlowski of Amsterdam; two grandchildren, John Pawlowski of Evansville, Ind.; and Christine Roiland, St. Kittus, British West Indies; one niece, one grand-niece and several cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jendrzejczak Funeral Home, 200 Church St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.
Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Alice Jankowski
August 31, 1996
Mrs. Alice W. Jankowski, 90, formerly of Tribes Hill, died Saturday at the Palatine Nursing Home, where she had lived since 1994.
Born Jan. 16, 1906 in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Jacob nd Frances Hine Wagner. Mrs. Jankowski moved to Tribes Hill as a young girl and lived there most of her life.
She was employed at the Vosburg Box Co. in Tribes Hill; Mohawk Carpet Mills and Montco, both in Amsterdam; and Edward's Box Co. and Britts Department Store, both in Gloversville.
Mrs. Jankowski retired in 1984.
She was a member of Textile Workers Union of America Local 835 and the Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Fred C. Jankowski, died in 1955.
Survivors include two sons, Francis J. Jankowskiof Albuquerque, N.M., and Herman Jankowskiof Lebanon, Pa.; a granddaughter, Beth Casteele of Kettering, Ohio; and two great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tribes Hill Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barbara Floryshak officiating.
Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Boice Funeral Home, 124 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Violet Shulze
August 31, 1996
Violet Shulze, 97, formerly of Sacandaga Road, Galway, died Saturday at the Ashmere Manor Nursing Home in Hinsdale, Mass.
She lived in Galway all of her life until five years ago and was a caregiver for her parents and sister most of her life.
A graveside service was conducted at 10:45 a.m. today in Galway Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Galway Village.
Leona Higgins
September 1, 1996
Mrs. Leona A. Higgins, 75, of Route 30, Northville, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after being stricken at home.
Born and educated in Corinth, Mrs. Higgins moved to Northville in 1959.
At one time, she worked for Peter's Novelty Co. in Gloversville and for Coleco Industries in Mayfield.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of the Cranberry Creek Community Church.
She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She married John Higgins on Aug. 25, 1968.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two brothers, Vernon Yennard of Mayfield and Adlore Yennard of Caroga Lake; and three sisters, Melvina and Mary Russell, both of Bakers Mills, and Ellen Russell of Mayfield.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St.
Burial will be in Speculator Cemetery.
Calling hours are from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northampton Ambulance Squad.
Helen Olendorf
September 1, 1996
Mrs. Helen Dearstyne Olendorf, 91, of the Embury Apartments, Saratoga Springs, died Sunday at home.
Born in Albany, Mrs. Olendorf resided in Buffalo for several years before moving back to Albany in 1947 and to Saratoga Springs in 1982.
She was the widow of Charles W. Olendorf Sr.
Survivors include two sons, Charles W. Olendorf Jr. of Galway and John R. Olendorf of Gloversville; a daughter, Barbara Greer of Carlsbad, Calif., and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital District Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, Albany.
Arrangements are by the Armer Funeral Home in Ballston Spa.
