Sidney Grossman

December 5, 1996
Sidney Grossman, 92, former president of L. Grossman & Sons, died Thursday at home in Massachusetts.

He was born and raised in Quincy, Mass., and after graduating from high school joined his father Louis and three older brothers in the family lumber business, serving as president from 1948 through 1968. He was also active in industrial redevelopment throughout New York and New England, including the revitalization of the Amsterdam mills.

His was married for 60 years to Frances Dworkin.

Survivors include three children, David Grossman of Newton, Mass., Ina Perlmuter of Evanston, Ill., and Beth Blankstein of Waban, Mass; three sisters, Anna Fleishman, Sarah Hellman and Etta Milchen; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral is 11:30 a.m. today at Temple Beth-El Atereth Israel, Newton, Mass.

Burial will be in Hebrew Progressive Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made Jewish Family and Children's Service, 31 New Chardon St., Boston, or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Levine Chapel, Brookline.

Ann Hassfurter

December 7, 1996
Ann Hassfurter, 71, of Krull Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 26, 1925, in Amsterdam, the daughter of John and Anna Lachman Terleckey. She was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam.

Mrs. Hassfurter was employed by Mohasco Industries for 39 years and then by Fownes Brothers for several years. She was most recently employed by the Home for Elderly Women in Amsterdam.

She married Andrew P. Hassfurter June 29, 1952. He died May 10, 1975.

Survivors include a son, George A. Hassfurter of Horseheads; three brothers, Emil Terleckey of Broadalbin, John and Stephen Terleckey, both of Amsterdam; two sisters, Mary Terleckey of Amsterdam and Genevieve Zeiser of Speculator; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.

Cremation will follow at Vale Crematorium, Schenectady.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Reformed Church or American Heart Association.

Walter LaRose

December 6, 1996
Walter H. LaRose, 76, of Northern Boulevard, Hagaman, died Friday evening at Albany Medical Center Hospital from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident on Route 5 in Cranesville Tuesday.

Born in Faust July 14, 1920, he was the son of Harry and Mary Elda St. John LaRose. He moved to Amsterdam as a child and attended St. Mary's Institute.

He was employed at the American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady and later worked for years as a carpenter for Local 370 of Albany. He retired in 1981.

Mr. LaRose served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was a life member of the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member for 27 years.

He was a communicant of St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church in Hagaman.

He married the former Jean Montanye Aug. 17, 1946.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Francis LaRose of West Sand Lake; two sisters, Ruth Godey of Worcester, Mass., and Mildred DeStefano of Amsterdam; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Church with the Rev. Ronald Matulewicz celebrant.

Spring interment will be in Hagaman Cemetery.

Calling hours are today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department or the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, both in care of the Rossi Funeral Home.

Paul Czelusniak Sr.

December 5, 1996
Paul A. Czelusniak Sr., 99, of Park Hill Adult Home and formerly of Northern Boulevard, Hagaman, died Thursday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born in Amsterdam Jan. 24, 1897, the son of Stanley and Victoria Cetnar Czelusniak. He lived in Amsterdam before moving to Pennsylvania for a short time and then returning to the Amsterdam area.

He was educated locally.

Mr. Czelusniak was employed by the General Electric Co. in Schenectady in the steam turbine division until retiring in 1960.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Church, Hagaman.

His wife, the former Martha Sokolowski, whom he married Sept. 16, 1916, died May 16, 1974.

Survivors include three sons, Paul Czelusniak Jr. of Eden. N.C., Stanley Czelusniak of Amsterdam and Joseph Czelusniak of Springfield, Mass.; four daughters, Irene Kobas of Bedford, Va., Martha Bozek of Amsterdam, Theresa Simons of Hagaman and Felicia Simons of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; a brother, Alexander Czelusniak of Amsterdam; three sisters, Stella Bandos, Celia McCarty and Jane Constantino, all of Amsterdam; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Pearl Nickless, who died in 1991.

The funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, Amsterdam.

Interment is in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Hagaman, in the spring.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Emma Hency

December 6, 1996
Emma J. Hency, 94, formerly of Otsego Street, Canajoharie, died Friday evening at the Palatine Nursing Home in Palatine Bridge.

She was born April 12, 1902, in Fort Plain and lived in Canajoharie most of her life.

Mrs. Hency was a homemaker, a member of the Canajoharie Country Club and the Ladies Home Bureau of Canajoharie.

She was a communicant of St. John's and St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Canajoharie and a former Sunday school teacher.

Mrs. Hency was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Hency Kuhn, who died May 13, 1994. Her husband, Harry E. Hency, died in 1987.

She is survived by four grandchildren, Jeffrey Kuhn and Karen Kuhn, both of Albany, Nancy Brumley of Littleton, Colo., and Timothy Kuhn of Colonie; a sister, Mattie Dopp of Hamburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. John Omans officiating.

Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, West Albany.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.

William Hotaling Jr.

December 9, 1996
William F. Hotaling Jr., 78, of Truax Road, Amsterdam, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital.

Born March 29, 1918 in Amsterdam, he was the son of William F. and Ruth Dannenberg Hotaling. He was a 1935 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, and attended Union College.

Mr. Hotaling served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II, achieving the rank of second lieutenant. He saw active duty as a navigator and was awarded the Distinguised Flying Cross.

After the war, Mr. Hotaling returned to Amsterdam, where he was affiliated with his brothers in the family business, Hotaling Florist. His association with the family business continued until his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Hotaling was a member of the United Methodist Church; Welcome Lodge No. 829 F&AM; a member and past secretary of The Amsterdam Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship award of the club; a member of the Montgomery County Historical Society; and a member of American Legion Post No. 39. He was a former member and past president of The Amsterdam Florist Association.

On Jan. 13, 1962, he married the former Margaret DeGraff.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a brother, Edward C. Hotaling of Amsterdam; three nephews, John C. Hotaling Jr. of Amsterdam, William J. Hotaling of Piseco, and Edward C. Hotaling Jr. of Piseco; four great-nephews, and cousins also survive.

Mr. Hotaling was predeceased by a brother, John C. Hotaling.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Cal Harris-Briggs and the Rev. Dan J. Wheeler co-officiating.

Interment will be private at Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
