Harold G. (Jack) Nixon

HAMMONDSPORT - Harold G. (Jack) Nixon, 78, of Hammondsport passed away on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.

Jack, as he was called by family and friends, was born on Sept. 14, 1928, in Corning, the son of Roy A. and Winifred Maltby Nixon. He graduated from Corning Northside, and was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Jack was a graduate student of Finance at Syracuse University and earned a Bachelor's degree there in Economics. He was Chapter President of Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity.

An Elmira businessman, in 1953, Harold began as a Mechanical Contractor. His company performed Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Electric and Plumbing on industrial, commercial and public works projects within the eastern U.S. and Canada. Simultaneously, he developed and owned Commercial Real Estate properties including thirteen U.S. Post Office facilities in Southern Tier of New York. Harold was a pillar in business communities, helping his friends start many businesses. Publicly, he is known for his battles against the Elmira Urban Renewal agency after the Flood of 1972. He fought against the agency's policy of using Eminent Domain to condemn large sections of private land for public use and then improperly planning the redevelopment of down town Elmria. Mostly, he had victories as his buildings remain at the heart of many communities.

Jack is survived by his wife of 25 years Onalee Barton; 5 daughters and sons-in -law; Cindy and Alan O'Neil of Venice, Florida, Debbie and Albert Babinicz of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Patty and Anthony Werner of Castle Rock, Colorado, Laurie and Rick Guild of DePere, Wisconsin, and Jacquelyn Nixon of Rochester; one son and daughter-in-law: Harold G. and Joy Nixon Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona; three step-children: Craig and Sue Sabin of Endwell, Laural Sabin of Dallas, Texas, and Todd and Jodi Sabin of Morganville, New Jersey; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Roy A. and Fran Nixon of Sparta, Tennessee, Philip A. and Donna Nixon of Vero Beach, Florida, two sisters and brothers-in-law: Lucy and L. R. Walbridge of Hammondsport, Kathryn Nixon of Vero Beach, Florida; first wife Lois Greene Ritchie of St. Petersburg, Florida; 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by his brothers Henry M. Nixon of Painted Post and Alan R. Nixon of Corning.

An avid bridge player, Jack participated in numerous bridge groups through the years. He enjoyed collecting antiques and collectibles with his wife and had great admiration for the ingenuity of our ancestors. In his younger years, Jack enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and boating, and logged thousands of hours as a private pilot for both business and pleasure. His greatest joy was hosting get-togethers of family and friends at his Keuka Lake home. Friends called Monday, Feb. 5, from noon to 2 p.m. at the LaMarche Funeral Home, 35 Main St ., Hammondsport. Funeral Services were held Monday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. Interment was held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport. In addition, a Memorial Service of Celebration will be held on June 17, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Hammondsport United Methodist Church, the Rev. Paul J. Rowley will officiate.

Grace M. Fox

BATH - Grace M. Fox, 100, entered into rest Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at Taylor Health Center.

Grace was born on August 1, 1906 in Wheeler, the daughter of the late Oliver J. and Mae (Lewis) Moor.

She was predeceased by her husband Ervin O. Fox in 1967, and is survived by her nieces Marjorie Fox and Arlene Moskal.

Burial will be held in the spring in Wheeler Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Bond- Davis Funeral Home of Bath.

Laura Randall

HONOYE FALLS - Laura Randall of Honoye Falls, passed away at home Jan. 30, 2007 at the age of 70.

She is survived by her husband Fred and two sons, James and Robert Rundall of Honoye Falls.

She was predeceased by her mother and father of Prattsburgh and two brothers and one sister.

She is also survived by six brothers and four sisters.

Calling hours were held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Feb. 2 at Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Honoye Falls. Funeral services were private.

Maxine Ruth "Blondie" Smith

HOWARD - Maxine Ruth "Blondie" Smith, 72, of 3608 County Route 70A, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, 2007 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, after a short illness.

Born in Bath on April 2, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Max and Norma Burley Wilcox.

Growing up in Cameron, Maxine graduated from high school in Addison and attended Alfred University. She has resided in the Hornell and Bath area most of her life.

Earlier she was employed as a waitress at several area restaurants and more recently was employed in the billing department of The Evening Tribune in Hornell. For many years she served as the president of the Lakeview Tenant Assoc. in Bath.

Maxine loved to read, crochet and collect stuffed toy cats as well as salt and pepper shakers. She will be remembered for being a loving grandmother and greatgrandmother.

Her family includes her nine children, Victor J. (Penny) Newburey, Jr. of Canisteo, Sue Winter of Augusta, Georgia, Norma (Jack) Yarka of Cameron, Dawn Newburey of Howard, Naomi (Jim) Clark of Hornell, Shirley (Brian) Ketchum and Pam Belfour all of Tennessee, Berta Learn of Rochester and Sherrie Smith of Belfast; her 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her sister, Vera Palmer of Cameron; her nieces, nephews, cousins and best friends, Beverly Harris and the Abbott family all of Bath.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Ruth White; her granddaughter, Heidi Francis and her grandson, Keith Kinne.

Calling hours were held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Wallace Wesleyan Church where a funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, with the Rev. William Spencer officiating. Interment was held in the Cameron Town Line Cemetery.

Those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the American Heart Assoc., PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13320 or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.

BYRON K. BOWEN

HOWARD - Byron K. Bowen, 72, died unexpectedly Friday (April 6, 2007) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born in Bath on Feb. 17, 1935, he was the son of the late H. Kenneth and Sarah Annabel Bowen. For nearly 30 years, he has been married to the former Bertha Clark, who survives.

A third generation farmer, Byron's family established their farm in the town of Howard in 1884.

He graduated from the Avoca Central School with the class of 1953.

Byron was a member and past president of the Future Farmers of America, a founding member of the Howard Fire Department, a member of the New York State Grange and the New York State Farm Bureau, a member of the Harley Davidson Touring Association; a charter member of the 2 cycle Club as well as a member of several John Deere 2 cycle Clubs.

A member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), he was a past master and former member of the Lewis Masonic Lodge No. 104 in Howard and presently a member of the Avoca Masonic Lodge No. 673.

Most importantly, Byron loved the land, farming and his John Deere 2 cycle tractors.

His family includes his wife, Bertha; his daughter, Vickie (Robert) Emery and their son, Kenny of New Mexico, his stepson, David (Vicky) Dockstader and their children, David Jr. and Brandi Lynn of Howard; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Curt and Gloria Clark of Bath and his special buddy, his dog, Sadee.

Besides his parents, Byron was predeceased by his son, David Bowen in 1972.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held in his memory at the Howard Fire Department at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 21, with the Rev. James Pearce officiating.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Howard Hillbilly's 4H Club, in care of Vicky Dockstader, 7201 Harris Hill Road, Bath, NY 14810 or to the Howard Volunteer Fire Department.

LELA B. SAGER

AVOCA - Lela B. Sager, 107, formerly of Avoca, passed away Tuesday morning (May 1, 2007) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath, where she had been a resident since June of 2001.

"Gramma Sager", lovingly known to family and friends, was born on Dec. 16, 1899 the daughter of the late Bertha McClary Partridge and Maynard Partridge.

Lela's family includes her son, Stanley (Helen) Sager and daughter, Beverly (Wilbur) Nelson all of Bath; her 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her daughter, Dolores Julien in 2002 and her husband, Gus Sager in 1961. Lela was the eldest of five siblings, Lila Wagner, Olive Tomalty, Lawrence Partridge and Ernest Partridge, also predeceased her.

Lela's first school days were in a one room schoolhouse on Wheeler Hill and she graduated from elementary school in Avoca. Her mother passed away when she was 12 years old and she then lived with her grandparents where she learned many skills. At 17, Lela worked at ME Denny's Department Store selling groceries and dry goods. She met and married Gus Sager in 1920 after his return from France during World War I. As a turn of the century baby, she lived in three centuries and remembers the sinking of the Titanic, seeing the first automobile, witnessing Haley's Comet and the San Francisco earthquake and fire.

She was a charter member of the Eastern Star joining in 1920. She also worked as an election inspector for the Town of Wheeler and after her husband's death was a court attendant in Bath for 22 years. Lela was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church joining in 1916. She dearly loved the church and the church family and faithfully served in many capacities including, financial secretary, Sunday school secretary, nursery attendant up till her 90's, charter member of the Emergency Club and always on hand for work and cleaning projects.

Lela traveled far and wide visiting grandchildren, lifted off in a hot air balloon and was spotted riding on a motorcycle. Her cozy home has been a haven for grandchildren, missionaries and evangelists for years. She always shared with everyone out of her abundance.

A highlight recently was receiving a honorary high school diploma from Avoca Central School at a reception in her honor. More interesting too was her photo appearance on the TODAY show in December 2006 honoring her 107 years.

Calling hours are from 1-3 p.m. Friday at the Avoca Baptist Church, where a funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Avoca.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Avoca Baptist Church, 1 Church St., Avoca, NY 14809.

Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.

Eric Stanley Boggis

Penn Yan - Eric Stanley Boggis 92, of Homestead Nursing Home, Penn Yan, passed away Sunday (May 3, 2009) at Geneva Hospital.

He was born September 3, 1916 in Portsmouth, England. He was a Cavalry Staff Sergeant in the British Army. A decorated veteran of Dunkirk & World War II. He also served in India, Africa & Egypt. He married Marjorie Oliver and immigrated to the United States in 1960.

Eric was an accomplished gardener & landscaper both in the US and England. And at one time was head gardener for the Duchess of Newcastle, in Wiltshire, England. He was a skilled horseman, enjoyed traveling and living an adventurous life! He will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by four daughters, Sandra (Roland) Brown or Bath, Karen (James) Thompson of Syracuse, Pamela (William) Allen of Arlington, TX and Gillian (Richard) Stocking, or Syracuse; one grand-daughter, Annie Hines of Syracuse, six grandsons, Scott Stocking of Syracuse, Darrell Buckley of Bath, Christopher & Michael Allen of Arlington, TX, Bryce & Kevin Thompson of Syracuse, one great-granddaughter, Abigail Hines; three great-grandsons, Collin Hines, Ethan Buckley & Gavin Buckley.

Eric's funeral service will take place Monday, May 11th, 2009 at 7pm. at St Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev Brad Benson officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St Thomas Episcopal Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath, NY 14810

Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.

Crystal Sue Gauss

CAMPBELL - Crystal Sue Gauss; age 23 of Campbell, passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2007 at Corning Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Crystal was born August 26, 1983 in Bath, daughter of Richard Jr. and Johnnie Sue Normand Gauss. She enjoyed crocheting and macramé craft work.

Surviving Crystal are her parents Richard and Johnnie Sue Gauss of Campbell; a brother Michael Gauss; a grandmother Constance Gauss of Thurston; many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and her best friend Jessica Kinney.

Predeceasing Crystal were grandparents Richard Gauss Sr., and Joseph and Joyce Normand.

Family and friends were invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St ., Corning, on Friday, Feb. 9 from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service was held at the conclusion of the visitation at 7 p.m. The spring interment was held in Coopers Cemetery, Coopers Plains.

Gladys Mae Tanner

BATH - Gladys Mae Tanner, 73, of 105 Geneva St. #125, Bath died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at home. She was born in Urbana, the daughter of Henry and Marion (Wilcox) McLoud. Gladys was a nursing assistant, retired from the Canandaigua VA Medical Center. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bath.
