Susan Toby Lustik
Died: Friday, September 03, 2010

Excerpts from eulogy by Rabbi Howard Hoffman of NSJC:

Susan Lustik was a woman whose life touched many others: in her family, in the community she benefited, in her many friendships and in the example she left to all of us of how to live.

Susan was the creative consultant on the redecoration of the North Shore Jewish Center building and the refurbishing of the sanctuary. Her touch is everywhere in the building, a very appropriate metaphor for the way in which she shaped the congregation by leading it as educational chair, vice president and president during one of its most trying periods. Her wisdom and leadership continued long after she handed over the official leadership to others and she continued as a mentor to lay leaders and professionals in her quiet, behind the scenes way. In the words of Rabbi William Lebeau, "She loved the NSJC and contributed so much to the welfare of the synagogue and larger Jewish community throughout her lifetime."

Susan's home was a hub of hospitality for the regular shabbat dinners she loved to make each week and for the many yom tovs she shared with her adopted family, the Alonis and Dvorkins, who spent every holiday together, raising their children as one large and caring family.

Susan was born icon in Manhattan and lived her first years in the Bronx. Her parents, Harry and Millie (Shlisky) Zain, a wonderful, warm and heimish couple, lavished their love on Susan, their only child. Millie was one of the 10 Shlisky children, all the siblings of the famous cantor Yossele Shlisky.

In 1950 the Zains moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, where Susan spent the rest of her youth. At about age 6, Susan was stricken with polio. She recovered fully by 8. Her mom enrolled her at Juilliard where she became an accomplished pianist. By 16 Susan had finished high school and moved up to Queens College, studying French literature. She went to graduate school at Tufts and took two trips to France to study before she got her master's degree. She taught at Newtown High School near her parents' home and was given the job of teaching the native speakers, the Haitians, French literature.

In 1966 Susan met Boris Lustik. They got married icon at Temple Israel of Great Neck on May 24, 1969, and honeymooned at Montego Bay, Jamaica. In July they moved to Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn and Susan commuted to her high school post.

In 1971 Boris joined his friends, Leo Dvorkin and Ari Aloni who had set up a pediatric practice in Selden and he and Susan moved to the Heatherwood apartments in Port Jefferson. Susan still commuted to her teaching job in Queens until the birth of Gabriel in 1972. In 1973 they moved to their home on Old Field Road and soon after Cara and then Hannah were born.

Susan employed all three children eventually in Mary Ann Decorators, the design shop she ran on 25A in Setauket.

On April 1, 2008, Susan learned of a uterine tumor. In May she was operated on and thought cured. She turned out to be in her tumors, as in her life, an exception. Miss 1 percent they called her, turning up one anomaly after another. She had six courses of chemotherapy, three of radiation and allergic complications. She hoped to gain time and also to allow others to benefit from her willingness to undergo experimental treatments. She was brave and uncomplaining, only worrying if she had led a worthwhile life and could die with dignity.

Susan's work for the congregation was not for the reason of gaining honor for herself. Only recently did she reluctantly agree to be acknowledged for her years of service and our congregational recognition of her leadership. Today we have barely scratched the surface of retelling her goodness and her contributions to this community and to the family which carries her memories as a proud heritage. I hope that, in the years to come, Susan's memory and influence will remain and grow here as well as among all of you who knew, loved or were touched by this special woman. May her memory be a continuing blessing among us.

Contributions may be made to NSJC, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital: Gynecological Oncology or Institute of Classic Architecture.
