Romaine M Barse
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Romaine M. Barse, 63, of 185 Spring Run, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004 at F. F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Friends called Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services followed with the Rev. Jerry Metz, officiating. Spring burial will be in Resthaven cemetery in Phelps.
Romaine was born January 9, 1941, in Brasher Falls, the son of Clifton and Josephine Russell Barse. He was a Marine Corps veteran and a Air Force veteran of the Vietnam war. He was also a member of the Palmyra American Legion Post 120. Romaine retired from the Air Force and also from state of New York, working in the mental health field.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Barse, whom he married
in October 2004; children, Shannon (Vern) Leach of Sodus, Jannette (Gary) Griffin of Hannibal, Judy (Steve) Rookie of Madrid, Michael (Cheyenne) Barse of Florida, Tom Barse of Sodus, Josie (Lance) Brown of Yelm, Wash., John (Shelly) Erti of Palmyra, and Michelle (Brian) Alvaro of Canandaigua; a brother, Henry Barse, of Florida; a sister, Beatrice Barse, of Ogdensburg; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ann Barse, who died in November 2003.
Mary "Jackie" Springer
PHELPS/GENEVA - Mary "Jackie" Springer, 68, of 2440 Welch Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Friends called Sunday, Dec. 26 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Dec. 27 at St. Francis Church in Phelps, with the Rev. Thomas Mull officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery in Geneva.

Jackie was born June 10, 1935, in Canandaigua, the daughter of William and Virginia Reisinger Carroll. She was an avid bowler and was in the seniors league at Sunset Bowl. Jackie retired from the New York Sate Thruway in 1996 after 30 years of service. She was a true nature lover and gardener. She also enjoyed collecting carnival glass and belonged to the Monday night euchre club at the Phelps American Legion.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Springer, of Phelps whom she married
33 years ago on Christmas eve. She is also survived by her children, Laurie Calderon of Austin, Texas; Clayton "Rusty" Murray of Manchester, Colleen (Gerald) Brundage of Pottsboro, Texas; Jeffery (Allison) Murray of St. Cloud, Fla.; Sue Springer of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Sandy Springer (Chris Ives) of North Chili, Scott (Xue Fang) Springer of Waterloo, Chris (Sandy) Springer of Phelps; a brother, Jerry (Audrey) Carroll of Zepherhills, Fla.; a sister, Joan (Bill) Barden of East Bloomfield; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Stephen Springer; and a brother, Eugene Carroll.
Floyd M. Avery
SHORTSVILLE - Floyd M. Avery, 61, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Friends called Monday, Jan. 3 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services followed at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Humphries officiating. Burial will be in Sandhill cemetery.

Mr. Avery was born Oct. 30, 1943, in Rochester. He retired from Victor Insulators. He was a member of the Canandaigua Moose Lodge and enjoyed fishing. Mr. Avery loved and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Darlene (Lyle) Hanvey of Phelps, Richard (Vicki) Avery of Victor, Judy Avery (Doug Brotz) of Phelps, Christine (Jack) Boylan of Canandaigua, and Scott Gibbs of Canandaigua; two brothers, James (Laurie) Ratthe of Rushville and John (Sue)Ratthe of Canandaigua; three sisters, Yvonne Harris and Judy Rickon, both of Canandaigua, and Jackie (Russ) Chimera of Rochester; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family; and two special friends, Anita and Ronald Murphy.
He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Ratthe; and grandsons, Lyle Hanvey Jr. and Alonzo Cook.
William Calabrese
PHELPS - William Calabrese, 80, of Fisher Road, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2005 in Clifton Springs Hospital.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 7 at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Fennessy officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery.

Bill was born May 17, 1924, in Geneva, the son of Michael and Catherine Gerace Calabrese, and attended the Geneva schools. He was a lifelong resident of this area. He was employed for many years at the Ontario Sand and Gravel plant in Oaks Corners. Bill resided in the town of Phelps for more than 57 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Griffin Calabrese; his daughter, Merrilee Calabrese of Geneva; two sisters, Viola Secor of Geneva and Mary Mitchell of Shortsville; four brothers, James and Donald Calabrese of Geneva, Nicholas Calabrese of Topeka, Kan.; and Anthony Calabrese of Lyons; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Jill Calabrese; two sisters, Edith Balistreri and Theresa Acquilano; and six brothers, Joseph, Ralph, Frank, Sam, Michael and Carmen Calabrese.
Lillian Earle Devereaux
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Lillian Earle, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.
A memorial service was Saturday, Jan 8 at St. John's Episcopal Church on Teft Avenue.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Gail) Devereaux, a daughter, Laurie Ann (Patrick) Devereaux, and a grandson, Toby Devereaux.

Winifred M. Flood
STANLEY - Winifred M. Flood, 94, of Short Road, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Friends called Monday, Dec. 27 at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham. There was a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at St. Theresa's Church in Stanley. Burial will be in St. Theresa's cemetery.

Winifred was born Feb. 25, 1910, in Stanley, the daughter of Edward and Mary Mannion Shannon. She was a lifetime communicant of St. Theresa's Church, a member of the Rosary Society and she also taught religion classes.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing and reading, but her real love in life was raising her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Aggie Gilbert of Sylmar, Calif.; six sons, Robert F. (Julie) Flood of Menlo Park, Calif., James (Karen) Flood of Penn Yan, Stephen J. (Mary) Flood of Clifton Park, Michael S. (Elaine) Flood of Oswego and Patrick (Karen) Flood of Clifton Springs; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Francis Flood, who died April 19, 1996; and her son, Joseph W. Flood, who died Sept. 19, 2000.
Edythe M. Henry
GENEVA/PHELPS - Edythe M. Henry, 98, formerly of Lewis St., passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at the Geneva Living Center South.
In keeping with her wishes, there were no prior calling hours. Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery in Phelps.
Friends may contribute to their favorite charity in Edythe's memory.
Edythe was born Aug. 30, 1906, in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of John and Sylvia May Bowden and had lived in the area all of her life. She loved her family dearly, especially her children and grandchildren.
Edythe was also a foster care provider, giving love and care to more than 125 children over the years.
She is survived by her sons, Fred W. (Susan) Henry of Waterloo and James L. Henry; a daughter, Carolyn (Frank) Cooper of Columbus, Ga.; several grandchildren and nieces and nephews; her brother, Dennis Bowden of Lynchburg, Va.; and two sisters, Anna Bowden Hovermale of Hagerstown, Md., and Cyrella Bell of Johnstown, Pa.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter; a son, Ronald; brothers, Wilson, Lewis, David and John; and sisters, Carrie and Catherine.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Eacker Funeral Home in Phelps.
Mary Jane Mullen
PHELPS - Mary Jane Mullen, 69, of 29 Banta St., left her family and friends to enter her heavenly home Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital after a strong-willed and courageous six-year battle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer.
Friends called Wednesday, Dec. 29 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. A memorial service celebrating Jane's life was held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005 at the United Church of Phelps with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating.
It is suggested that memorial contributions be made to one of the following: The United Church of Phelps, 58 Main St., Phelps 14532; the Phelps Historical Society, 66 Main St., Phelps 14532; the Phelps Volunteer Ambulance, 7 Exchange St., Phelps 14532; or to the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs 14432.
Jane was born Feb. 25, 1935, in Hornell, the daughter of Dr. Leonard L. and Mary Tyler. Growing up in Canisteo, she was a member of the graduating Class of 1953 of Canisteo High School and went on to earn her bachelor of science degree in physical therapy from Ithaca College in 1957. After working for one year at Rochester General Hospital, she married
Theodore Mullen on July 19, 1958. They eventually settled in Phelps in 1963, and she worked at both Clifton Springs and Geneva General hospitals, retiring in 1997.
She was a member of the United Church of Phelps, singing in the choir and serving as a Sunday School teacher, a youth group leader and on various committees over the years. She also was a member of the Phelps Historical Society, the Phelps Middle School Band Boosters and the Bridge Club. A guiding force of the Midlakes chapter of the American Field Service she, along with her family, hosted foreign students for the 1974-75 and 1985-86 school years, as well as a teacher from China for a partial year. An accomplished seamstress, Jane was known for her creation of clothes, wedding dresses and costumes for baton twirlers as well as the Midlakes theater program. She was also known for her creation of wedding and specialty cakes.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Theodore Mullen of Phelps; four daughters, Anne (Paul) Hadsell of Phelps, Janis (Blake) Wener of Newfield, Mary (David) Johnson of Freeville and Carol (Joshua) Buchman of Manlius; 10 grandchildren, Renee Mobley, Amy and Bradley Werner, Stephen, Rebecca, Melissa and Katherine Johnson and Tyler, Kalie and Talia Buchman; two sisters, Elizabeth Hammond and Barbara (Richard) Terry, both of Canisteo; a brother, Jerry (Priscilla) Syler of Spencerport; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Leonard L. and Mary Tyler.
Mary A. Seward
GENEVA - Mary A. Seward, 89, of Norwood Avenue, passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 at Geneva General Hospital.
Friends called Monday, Jan. 3 at the McGuigan Funeral Home, 45 High St. in Geneva. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan 4 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery.

Mary was born Sept. 18, 1915, in Geneva, the daughter of the late Richard and Mary Gleason McHale. She worked for many years at Shuron Optical and retired from the Geneva City School District.
She is survived by two sons, Frederick S. (Geri) Seward Jr. of Fulton and Brian (Holly) Seward of Phelps; five grandchildren, Erinn, Shawn and Andrew Seward and Daniel and Aliya Seward; three sisters, Margaret Lynch of Geneva, Loretta Morehouse of Geneva, and Frances McHale of Clifton Springs; two brothers, Richard McHale of Canandaigua and Edward McHale of Geneva; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick S. Seward, Sr. in 2001; a son Paul Seward; a brother; and several sisters.
Larry M. DeMay
MANCHESTER - Larry M. DeMay, 60, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at Hospeace House in Naples.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan 1, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Manchester.

Larry was born April 16, 1944, in Canandaigua, the son of Maynard and Jessie DeMay. He attended Manchester High School and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was the owner and operator of DeMay Trucking in Manchester, since the age of 16.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet DeMay of Clifton Springs and Amanda DeMay of Ocala, Fla.; his mother, Jessie DeMay of Manchester, brother, Gordon (Kathy) DeMay of Palmyra; two sisters, Linda (Jon) Holbrook of Canisteo, and Beanie (Larry) Hill of Falconer; stepdaughter, Shaun (Buck) Mercer of Allentown, Pa.; and step grandchildren, Dakota, Maverick, Colton and Payton Mercer, all of Allentown, Pa.
Arrangements were made by Halsted-Patrick Funeral Home in Manchester.
