EDDIE BYRD

Swan Lake, N.Y. - Eddie Byrd of Swan Lake, a retired truck driver for the Gill Syrup Co. in Brooklyn, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in Castle Point V.A. Hospital, after a short illness. He was 70. The son of the late Daniel and Ophelia Green Byrd, he was born Dec. 5, 1930, in New York City. Mr. Byrd was a Korean War Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Louisa Jorge Byrd at home; two sons, Anthony Byrd of Brooklyn and Eddie Byrd Jr. of Swan Lake; four daughters, Lisa Byrd of Brooklyn, Cathy Byrd of Woodlands, Texas, Catherine Byrd of the Bronx and Elena Byrd McLeod of Swan Lake; two brothers, David Byrd of New Jersey and Thomas Byrd of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, Louise, Lakarri and Eddie Byrd III; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Bert, Harry and John. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 3534 St Rt 55, Kauneonga Lake. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home. Private cremations will take place in Cedar Hill, Newburgh. Funeral arrangements were made bey Ramsay's Funeral Home.

SHIRLEY V. HORLER (NEE SERFESS)

Ventura, Calif. - Shirley V. Horler (nee Serfess) of Ventura, Calif. and formerly of Unionville, died in Ventura Care Center after a long illness. She was 80. Shirley was born in Hawthorne, N.J., she was a resident of Unionville for many years before moving to California in 1976. While in Unionville, she and her husband Thomas W. Horler owned and operated Horler's General Store for over 35 years before selling the store and retiring in 1971. She was the widow of Thomas W. Horler, who passed away in 1967. Mrs. Horler was a member of the Unionville Presbyterian Church for many years. Survivors include one son, Thomas H. Horler of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Marilyn Johnston of Ventura, Calif.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by one son, Dennis in 1993. There will be no visitation at the request of the family. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Unionville cemetery. The Rev. Robert Keene will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to American Lung Association of New Jersey, 333B Route 46 West, Suite 205, Fairfield, N.J. 07004 would be appreciated by the family. MARY J. QUACKENBUSH

Warwick, N.Y. - Mary J. Quackenbush of Warwick died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at St. Anthony's Hospital, Warwick. She was 73. The daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret Tomer O'Dell, she was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Warwick. She was the widow of James Dudley Quackenbush. Mrs. Quackenbush was a member of the Warwick United Methodist Church and was the former proprietor of Quackenbush's General Store in Bellvale. A family statement read: "Mom was a strong-willed woman who loved to travel and golf with her friends every chance she could get." She is survived by one daughter, Mary Louise Larson of Hartsdale; two sons, Keith Quackenbush and Gary Quackenbush, both of Warwick; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Donald O'Dell. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 5, at the Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Warwick cemetery, Warwick. Memorial contributions may be made to the Warwick Ambulance Corp. MELVIN TUCKER

Newburgh, N.Y. - Melvin Tucker of Newburgh, a retired laborer for Star Expansion in Mountainville, and 40-year resident of the area, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in Cornwall Hospital, Cornwall. He was 83. The son of the late Hugh Williams Sr. and Sadie Hatchett, he was born April 7, 1917, in Roxboro, N.C. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Gracie Tucker of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Vance Tucker Sr. and William Tucker, both of Baltimore, Md.; four daughters, Carol Tucker-Blackmon, Wanda Tucker-Buckson, Gwendolyn Tucker-Baker Paulette Tucker-Jubilee, all of Baltimore, Md.; seven brothers, Travis Hatchett of Roxboro, N.C., Hugh Williams of Newburgh, Garner Williams of New Rochelle, Hassel and Sam Hatchet, both of Roxboro, N.C., Aubry Hatchett of Butler, N.C. and Murphy Hatchett of Semora, N.C.; three sisters, Katie Haynes of Portland, Ore., Annie Jacobs of Baltimore, Md., and Roxanna Daye of Durham, N.C.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by one son, Larry Tucker; four brothers, Travis, Joe, John and Malcolm Hatchett; and one sister, Iretha Hatchett. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Ebenezer Baptist Church, 76 First Street, Newburgh. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Ebenezer Baptist Church. LAWRENCE "LARRY" P. MCMAHON

Salisbury Mills, N.Y. - Lawrence "Larry" P. McMahon of Salisbury Mills, a New York City Fireman-Ladder 61 from 1962-1985, and a retiree from IBM Fishkill, entered into rest Friday, August 3, 2001 at home. He was 66. Son of the late Lawrence and Lilly Kellett McMahon, he was born October 9, 1934 in Manhattan. Larry served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, receiving medals and commendations ranking him as Airman First Class; was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, and a member of Salisbury Mills Fire Company. Survivors include his beloved wife, Kathleen O'Connor McMahon, at home; two sons, Kevin McMahon and Lawrence McMahon; one brother, Michael McMahon; one sister, Rosaleen Quinn; two grandchildren, Meghan and Katie; his mother-in-law, Anna O'Connor, sister-in-law, Kay McMahon, brother-in-law, Thomas Kitson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Rothrock and Elizabeth Kitson. Family will receive their friends from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, August 5 in DiDonato-Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. THERESA R. HINTZE

Monticello, N.Y. - Theresa R. Hintze of Monticello, a medical biller for Sullivan Internal Medical Group, Monticello, and longtime resident of the area, died Aug. 4, 2001, at home. She was 60. The daughter of the late Michael and Mary Nicholl Howard, she was born Oct. 13, 1940 in the Bronx. She was the widow of Daniel Gallager and John Hawthorne. Mrs. Hintze was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church, Monticello and the Order of the Eastern Star. Theresa worked for 8-years in Community General Hospital and was one of the original members of the "We Care Committee". She supported the American Indians in North Dakota. Survivors include her husband of 25-years, Robert F. Hintze at home ; two sons, , Daniel Gallagher of Ithaca and John Hawthorne and his wife, Michelle of Ithaca; one daughter, Leona and her husband, James Appenaver of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Stacey, J.J., Ryan and Jonathan; four nieces Erica, Maura, Daria and Chaunda; one nephew, Kieren; and many cousins in the U.S. and Ireland. She was predeceased by one sister, Mary Weidner. Visiation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Sunday, Aug. 5, and Monday, Aug. 6, at VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 195 Broadway, Monticello. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in St. Peter's R.C. Church, Monticello. Father Robert Ginel will officiate. CAROLYN JONES CARPENTER

Smithfield, North Carolina - Carolyn Jones Carpenter of Smithfield, NC, formerly of Highland Mills, died Monday, December 17, 2001. She was 85. The daughter of the late Charles Henry and Lucy Florence Jones, she was born February 26, 1916 in Highland Mills. Survivors include two daughters, Beth Gregory and Marsha Abrams, both of Smithfield, NC; one brother, C. Henry Jones, Jr. of Central Valley; two grandchildren, Chris Abrams and Jennifer Robertson and one great grandson, Kevin Robertson. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 4 pm on Friday, December 21, in the First Christian Church of Smithfield, NC. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Clayton Animal Shelter, 720 Durham Street, Clayton, NC 27520. VIRGINIA E. "GINNY" ALTVATER

Milford, Pa. - Virginia E. "Ginny" Altvater of Milford, Pa., died Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at Milford, Pa. She was 88. The daughter of John and Mattie (Decker) Taylor, she was born on March 10, 1913 in New City. She was the widow of the late Henry J. Altvater Jr. Known as "Mrs. A" she was a gym teacher at Clifton High School for over thirty years. She was a member of the NJ Teacher's Association. Survivors include her son, Henry Altvater III; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was predeceased by husband, Henry J. Altvater Jr. in 1990; and two brothers, John and George; and one sister, Mattie Peabody. Interment will take place in Delaware cemetery, Dingman's Ferry, Pa., at the convenience of the family. Pine Bush, N.Y. - Elizabeth Pongracz of Pine Bush, a homemaker, and a 3 year resident of the area, died Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at Horton Medical Center, Middletown. She was 82. The daughter of Steven Fukasz and Maria Juhasz Fukasz, she was born March 21, 1919 in Budapest, Hungary. She is the widow of the late Albert Pongracz. Survivors include one son, Steven Horvath of Calif.; one daughter, Maria Pongracz of Pine Bush; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Francis Csorba of Miami, Fla. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29, at the William M. Gagan Funeral Home, 1525 Burlingham Rd., Pine Bush. Father Alfred Gallant officiating. CORY JONES

New Windsor, N.Y. - Cory Jones of New Windsor, entered into rest Monday, December 17, 2001 at home. He was 28. The son of Harold Jones and Joann Schaeffer, he was born June 16, 1973 in Newburgh. He was an avid lover of the theater and music. He was active in many local theater organizations. Survivors include mother, Joann; step-father, Philip Schaeffer of Newburgh; father, Harold T. Jones of N.J.; brother, Brian Jones of Newburgh; step-sister, Terry Schaeffer of Long Island; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Smith of Brooklyn; paternal grandparents, Harold A. and Shirley Jones of New Windsor; one niece, one nephew, several aunts, uncles and cousins. WILLIAM F. VAN LEUVAN

Middletown, N.Y. - William F. Van Leuvan of Middletown, a retired factory worker for Princeton Upholstery and life long resident of the area, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen. He was 83. The son of Henry and Rose Decker Van Leuvan, he was born on November 13, 1918 in Middletown. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth LaPolt Van Leuvan at home; his four daughters, Laurie Simpson of Missouri, Mary Carr of Missouri, Diane Riccobene of Middletown and Dawn Jones of Middletown; his brother, Edward Van Leuvan of Middletown; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his grandson, Randy Simpson. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 am on Friday, December 21, at Ralston-Lippincott-Hasbrouck-Ingrassia Funeral Home, Inc., 72 West Main Street, Middletown. WILLIAM "BILL" H. PETERS

New Paltz, N.Y. - William "Bill" H. Peters of New Paltz, a stone house renovator who was self-employed in New Paltz, and has lived in New Paltz area for 35 years prior to that in Malveme, LI, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001 in White Duck Farm, New Paltz. He was 55. The son of Wilma Finkenstadt Peters and the late William Peters, he was born September 19, 1946 in Long Island. He was a member of SCCA-Sport Car Club of America and VSCCA-Vintage Sport Car Club of America, TKE-Tau Kappa Epsolon. His passion and love was restoring stone houses- reflecting his artistry. He left 30 years of corporate employment to pursue his passion. He love to vacation in Mexico and was an avid boater. He is survived by his mother, Wilma Finkenstadt Peters of Cary, Ill.; son, Dennis Peters of Bronxville; two daughters, Tiffany Lopes of Grantham, N.H. and Caroline Campbell of Rock Hill; one sister, Noel Cook of Cary, Ill.; six grandchildren; and two nieces. REVERTA IZZO

Haverstraw, N.Y. - Reverta Izzo of Haverstraw, died Monday, December 17, 2001 at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was 80. The daughter of Charles and Loreta (McCormick) Siebold, she was born September 17, 1921 in Haverstraw. She worked until her retirement in various schools in the North Rockland School District. She is survived by her daughters, Donna and her husband, Steven Goldberger of Monroe and Colleen Izzo of Chester; grandchildren, Whitney Brisman, Nicile Hedges, and Erica Brisman; great-granddaughter, Noel Hedges; and brother, Douglas Sibold of New Paltz. She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph on October 1986. Friends may call from 2 t0 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, and Thursday December 20, at the T.J. Sparrowbush, N.Y. - Dorothy Jenkins of Sparrowbush, a bookkeeper for the Riverside Hotel, Matamoras, Pa., and a lifelong resident of the area, died Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at her home. She was 72. The daughter of the late Albert and Anna Bukowski Lippert, she was born October 3, 1929 in Montclair, N.J. She was married to the late Claude Jenkins. She was a member of the St. Mary's R.C. Church, Port Jervis; Matamoras Senior Citizens; and a member of the Port Jervis Bowling League. Survivors include one son, Richard Jenkins of Bloomfield, N.J.; two sisters, Betty Maryanski of Bloomfield, N.J. and her twin sister, Dolores Lippert of Bloomfield, N.J.; four grandchildren, Heather Jenkins, Nicole Jenkins, Jonathan Jenkins and Richard Michaelback; and several nieces and nephews. JOHN KLEIS SR.

Richfield Springs, N.Y - John Kleis Sr. of Richfield Springs, formerly of New Paltz and Yonkers, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer. Mr. Kleis was a self-employed stone mason for most of his working life and worked for the Rivendall Winery, New Paltz retiring in 1992. It was that year he and his wife, Mildred moved to Richfield Springs coming from New Paltz. The son of the late Jacob and Mary Soja Kleis, he was born July 5, 1920 in Yonkers. On February 17, 1942, he married Mildred Spreer in Armonk, a loving union of fifty-four years until her passing on March 5, 1996. John was raised in Yonkers and was a graduate of Saunders Trade and Technical High School. His hobby was raising Tippler pigeons and belonged to various homing pigeons clubs throughout the area. Survivors include two sons; John and his wife, Cindy Kleis and Phillip Kleis, both of New Paltz; two daughters, Dev Tacy of Schoharie, and Collette and her husband, Arthur Karpowich of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, Janine Alescio of Schoharie, Rob Place of Plano, Texas, Erica and Mark Kleis of New Paltz; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

MAMIE CARLTON GRAHAM

Newburgh, N.Y. - Mamie Carlton Graham of Newburgh, a taxi driver for All Family Taxi Service, Newburgh and 42 year resident of the area died Wednesday, December 18, 2001 at St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh. She was 67. The daughter of the late Willie Frank Carlton and Corine King Carlton of Beacon, she was born October 31, 1934 in Mt. Olive, North Carolina. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Grand Matron, Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her mother, Corine King Carlton of Beacon; one son, Robert Graham, Jr. and his wife Sherry of New Rochelle; one daughter, Wennie Camacho and her husband Actavio of Beacon; three brothers, Jesse and Daniel Carlton, both of Poughkeepsie and Willie Carlton of Beacon; one sister, Martha Smickle of Beacon; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by sister, Marie Carlton; and brother, Louis Carlton. Friends may call from 12 noon to 1 pm on Saturday, December 22, at Rhodes Funeral Chapel, 259 Walsh Avenue, New Windsor. CONSTANCE ROBERTA "CONNIE" COLEMAN

Waynesboro, Va. - Constance Roberta "Connie" Coleman of Waynesboro, Va., died Monday, December 17, 2001 at University of Virginia Medical Center at Charlottesville. She was 76. The daughter of the late Robert and Mabel Swedenberg Feigum, she was born December 20, 1924 in Superior, WI. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at Waynesboro, Va. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Linn Coleman; her mother of 97 years; three sons, Dennis Wayne Coleman of Colo., and Michael Bruce Coleman and Mark Douglas Coleman, both of New York; two daughters, Dian Lynn Coleman and Linda Maxine McCormick, both of New York; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Russel Feigum, Donald Feigum, Merlin Feigum and Peter Feigum; and four sisters, Norma Dalsveen, Margaret Austin, Joyce Billmark and Nancy Johnson. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Robert F. Humphrey will officiate. Interment will be in National Military cemetery at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvanian at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002. JOYCE M. SEXTON

Middletown, N.Y. - Joyce M. Sexton, a longtime resident of Middletown, died on December 17, 2001. She was 61. The daughter of William G. and Mary Hand Haughey, she was born December 7, 1940 in New York, N.Y. She moved to the Middletown area from Queens, in 1972. She was employed as a case worker for the Department of Social Services in Goshen for 19 years. She is survived by two sons, James Sexton and his wife, Sherry, and Jerome Sexton and Jean Gehler, all of Middletown; two daughters, Jacqueline and her husband, Chuck of Middletown and Jennifer and Steve of Ramsey, N.J.; one sister, Carol Garcia of Brooklyn and was a loving grandmother to C.J. and Daniel Watson and Nicole Pallone. The family is deeply grateful to the volunteers and staff of Hospice for the care given to their mom during her illness. Newburgh, N.Y. - A. Edna Fitzpatrick of Newburgh, entered into rest Tuesday, December 18, 2001 in Cornwall Hospital. She was 91. The daughter of William and Anna Kelly Whalen, she was born February 19, 1910 in Newburgh. She was the widow of John Fitzpatrick. She was the second oldest member of St. Mary's Church in Newburgh; member of the St. Mary's Rosary Society; OPTI-Misses Club; member of M.Q.S. Club; and member of the Tired Mother's Club. A family statement read: "She was a loving, caring "Mother" for everyone who knew her. Family or friend, she was always there for you. "To know her was to love her, " and we all do. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten by her loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends." Survivors include three children, Marianne McGrath Witherwax and husband, Jerry of Newburgh, Patricia Marselle and husband, Denis of Manahawkin, N.J., and John Fitzpatrick and wife, Edie of Pine Bush; 19 grandchildren, Diane, Donna, Michael John, Theresa, Walter, Richard, Janine, Carol, Daniel, John, Debbie, Jeffery, Renee, Kimberly, Stefanie, Colleen, Loreen, Jason and Ryan; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, December 21, at Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home Inc., 318 N. Montgomery St., Newburgh, NY 12550. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, December 22, at St. Mary's Church, 180 South St., Newburgh. Monsignor John Budwick will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, New Windsor. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St Mary's Restoration Fund or St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen in Newburgh. Arrangements by Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home, Inc., Newburgh.
