Georgene Smith Marmon
HOMER — Graveside services for Georgene Smith Marmon will be held at the Croton Union Cemetery in Treadwell at noon, July 17, 1998. Those attending the service may bring a folding chair.

Georgene Smith Marmon passed away Nov. 4, 1997, at the Cortland Memorial Hospital, Cortland. Funeral services were held Nov. 8, 1997, in the First United Methodist Church, Homer.

Georgene was born July 17, 1917, the daughter of Alfred and Alice Chace Smith in Treadwell. She was married to Roger C. Marmon, April 6, 1940.

She had graduated from A.L. Kellogg Central School in 1934 and received her bachelor's of art from Hartwick College and a master's of science in education from the State University College at Cortland. She taught English at Cortland Junior High School for 13½ years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Homer, Cortland County Retired Teachers Association, was a former member of Church Women United, the American Association of Retired Persons, American Association of University Women, Sennightly Club and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Surviving are her husband, Roger C. Marmon of Homer; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David C. of Lockport, and Paul A. and Bonnie of Allentown, Pa.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Robert  White of Oneonta as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

Elsie E. Maloney
ONEONTA — A memorial service will be held for Elsie E. Maloney, formerly of Oneonta, on Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Main Street, Laurens with the Rev. Lynn Ash officiating.

Inurnment of the cremains will be at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Elsie Maloney died March 19, 1998, at her home in Lyons,  Colo.

Elsie Sweet was born on July 17, 1906, in Worcester, Mass., to Thomas and Helga Sweet.

She married Martin C. Maloney on May 31, 1931, in Brooklyn.

She was a member of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta for 40 years.

She worked in the administration department at the State University College at Oneonta until retiring.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon Maloney of Kingwood, W. Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Gale and Jack Voorhies of Lyons,  Colo., where she made her home; one brother, Stanley A. Sweet of Worcester, Mass.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy L. Maloney, her husband, her parents and one sister, Helen Hjortholm.

Frederic Munford
COOPERSTOWN — Frederic Munford, 85, of South Avenue in Cooperstown, died Thursday evening, July 9, 1998, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

He was born on April 30, 1913 in the town of Middlefield, a son of Joseph J. and Emily (Potter) Munford.

He married Marjorie Harvey on Dec. 31, 1948. Marjorie died May 5, 1998.

A lifelong resident of Cooperstown, Fred graduated from Cooperstown High School in the class of 1935. From 1938 until 1942, he worked for the Clark Estates as a chauffeur and also trained their young sporting dogs to hunt birds and water fowl.

He served his country in the United States Army from May 27, 1942 until Jan. 27, 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. During that period Fred was a member of the 40th Infantry War Dog Platoon and instructed enlisted men in training dogs to perform various commands and to become accustomed to gun and shell fire. Fred also served in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Patrol.

In 1953 Fred and his wife Marjorie moved to South Avenue in Cooperstown.

Fred held many jobs during his lifetime, including working for Susquehanna SPCA and serving as a substitute rural letter carrier for the Cooperstown Post Office in the 1970s. A man of many interests, he enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Fred was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston VFW Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and was a charter member of the Cooperstown Fish and Game Club.

Fred's family wishes to thank all the caregivers at the Oneonta Nursing Home for their kindnesses during the past four months.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Monica Munford of West Winfield; two grandsons, Michael C. Munford of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and M. Gregory Munford of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Joseph C. Munford Jr. of  Texas and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Miss Constance G. Munford who died in 1972 and Mrs. Ruby M. Davidson who died in 1987 and three brothers, Ernest L. Munford who died in 1958, William Munford who died in 1963 and Robert Munford who died in 1980.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1998 at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown, officiating. Interment will follow in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, R.R. 3, Box 64B, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ruth V. Huestis
OAKSVILLE — Ruth V. Huestis, 80, of  Jones Road, Oaksville died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare.

Born on April 1, 1918, in Portlandville, a daughter of Cornelius and Harriet VanDeusen, she was raised in the Milford area. She was a graduate of Milford High School and furthered her education in child nursing in Utica.

Ruth worked for the housekeeping department at Bassett Healthcare for 22 years. She was a lifelong resident of the area and spent her last 30 years with her loving husband Charlie Huestis who predeceased her on May 23, 1997.

Ruth was an active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Schuyler Lake. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her most favorite activity was spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Valerie Mickle and her three children, Steven Mickle of Hartwick, Wanda and her husband Richard Conti of Franklin, N.J., and Jennifer Kukenberger of Sidney; a second daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Robert Stergas of Hartwick and their two children, Sheila Sabella of Syracuse and Robert Stergas Jr. of Syracuse; another daughter and her special friend, Pauline Matuk and Harold Lasher of Hagaman and Pauline's daughters, Donna Bell and Christine DuFresne of Hagaman and Pauline's son, Daniel Matuk and several great-grandchildren.

Ruth was predeceased by five grandchildren and a son-in-law, Clarence Mickle.

A graveside and committal service will be held Monday, July 13, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Burlington Flats Cemetery in Burlington Flats with Glenn Ahrens of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses of Schuyler Lake officiating.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make contributions in her name can do so at the nursing staff of the second floor at Bassett Healthcare or to the Catskill Area Hospice at 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Anton Gergich Jr.
ISELIN, N.J. — Anton Gergich Jr., 90, of Iselin, N.J., and formerly of Worcester, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Rahway Hospital in Rahway, N.J.

He was born July 6, 1908, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Anton Sr. and Maria (Kvasnicka) Gergich.

He married Angela Kenik in 1931 in Worcester. She predeceased him April 14, 1976.

Mr. Gergich lived in Italy until the age of 16, when he moved to the Worcester area in 1925 and then in 1994 he moved to New Jersey.

He owned and operated a farm in the Worcester area for many years and was also employed for the D&H Railroad and the Worcester Highway Department.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester and the SNPJ Society.

He is survived by two sons, Anthony Gergich of Leonia, N.J. and Stanley Gergich of Gloversville; two daughters, Mary  Taylor of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Josephine Gutierrez of Iselin, N.J.; two half-brothers, William Gergich of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Justus Gergich of North Hills,  Calif.; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Anna Rose and two sisters Mrs. (Mary) Rudolf Dedek and Antonia Gergich and a brother, Albin Gergich.

A funeral liturgy service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

The Rev. William Crandall will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester.

Calling hours will be Sunday, July 12, 1998, from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, July 13 from noon until service time at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Margaret A. Clements
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Margaret A. Clements, 57, of Delong Road, died on Friday, July 10, 1998, at her home after a brief illness.

A daughter of Dorothy Pierce Hibbard and the late Milton Cech, she was born on July 13, 1940, in Herkimer. A lifelong area resident, she attended Poland Central School. In July 1958, she married Frederick Clements in Newport. For several years, she worked as an assembler in local manufacturing companies. Margaret was a member of the Frankfort Gospel Tabernacle Church.

Surviving her is her companion of 10 years, Clarence Burke of Richfield Springs; five sons, Frederick Scott and his wife Judy Clements, Frank and his wife Louise Clements, all of Richfield Springs, Delbert and his wife Karen Grimshaw of Fairbanks, Alaska, Billy Grimshaw of Little Falls, Aaron and his wife Debbie Clements of Jordanville; two daughters and their husbgand, Robin and Robert Coveny of Richfield Springs and Rosie and Honie Carr of Mohawk; one brother, Terry Cech and his wife Debbie of Plattsburgh; a sister, Norma Jenkins of New Jersey; 13 grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs with the Rev. John Wilde, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. Calling hours are Sunday evening, 7-9 p.m.

Jeanetta Peake Cooper
NEW BERLIN — Jeanetta Peake Cooper, 91, of New Berlin died July 10, 1998, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born July 26, 1907, in Delhi, the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Sampson) Peake.

She married Alexander F. Cooper on May 15, 1926. He died May 22, 1969. Her childhood was spent in Delhi.

She was a graduate of Delaware Academy in Delhi and attended Albany State College.

She is survived by her children, George N. Cooper of Richmond, Va., Alexander Cooper of Rippon, W.Va., Beverly C. Harris of New Berlin and Karyl C. Turner of New Berlin; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, William F. Cooper; one sister, Evelyn C. Vail and one half brother, Ray Thomas.

She worked as an inspector for Bendix Corp. of Sidney until her retirement in 1975.

Jeanetta loved the ocean, traveling, her animals and her family.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 13, 1998, at 3 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin with the Rev. Beverly Buter of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Viewing will be Monday, July 13 from 2-3 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad, New Berlin, or the Chase Memorial Nursing Home Eden Project, New Berlin.

Leslie M. Gage
FORT PLAIN — Mr. Leslie M. Gage, 83, of Northern Terrace died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at the Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls, after a short illness.

He was born in Amsterdam on Dec. 28, 1914, the son of Melvin Gage and Ruby Gifford.

He was educated in Westville.

He was a dairy farmer all his working life and worked in Cooperstown, Fly Creek and lastly in Chaseville before retiring in 1978.

He lived in Fort Plain for 11 years, previously living in Schenevus.

He married Mildred Clapper on June 20, 1943, in Cherry Valley.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Gage of Fort Plain; three sons, Carl E. Gage of Oneonta, Melvin L. Gage of Schenevus and Steven L. Gage of Fort Plain; three daughters, Elizabeth A. Gage of Arcadia, Fla., Valerie J. Silvernail of Arcadia, Fla. and Diane M. Hilts of Sharon Springs; one brother, Raymond Gage of Canajoharie; two sisters, Edna Balcom of Toddsville and Dorothy Dodge of Tampa, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Route 5, Palatine Bridge.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home of Fort Plain.
