Edith B. Vibbard
STAMFORD — Edith B. Vibbard, 100, of Sara's Senior Care Residence, Stamford, died Sunday evening, Nov. 1, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of Murry and Lillian (Johnson) Bostwick, born Aug. 18, 1898, in Cooperstown Junction.

She is survived by three sons, Joseph Cortese of Cooperstown, Donald Cortese and daughter-in-law, Jeanne, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Raymond Nichols and daughter-in-law, Thelma, of Caldwell, Idaho; and a daughter, Katherine Carman of Oneonta. She has 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She also has two surviving sisters, Helen  Johnson of Rochester and Laura Tompkins of Riverton, Wyo.; and a brother, Melvin Bostwick of Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, David Cortese of Oneonta, and a daughter, Mary Clark of Pittsfield, Mass.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Leslie G. Rude
DECORAH, Iowa — Dr. Leslie G. Rude, 67, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, Iowa. Dr. Rude was the vice president for educational affairs and dean of Hartwick College in Oneonta from 1965-1974, and was later elected an honorary alumnus of the institution.
Leslie Rude was born in Montevideo, Minn., on July 17, 1931, to Joseph H. Rude and Olga (Stavne) Rude of rural Sacred Heart, Minn. He graduated from Granite Falls, Minn., High School in 1949, and went on to attend Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Dr. Rude earned his B.A. in speech and sociology from Luther College in 1952, his M.A. in speech from  Louisiana State University in 1953, and his Ph.D. in speech and political science from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1962. He completed additional coursework in management at Harvard University's School of Business in 1976.

In addition to his post as Dean of Hartwick College, Dr. Rude held positions at Luther College as professor of speech/theater, professor of economics, accounting, and management, and vice president for development, and he taught at Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa, as professor of management. Dr. Rude also served as development officer for Vesterheim, the Norwegian-American Museum, in Decorah, Iowa.

Dr. Rude was active in academic, cultural and political organizations, traveled widely, and had a special interest and role in managing, supporting and promoting the medium of radio, especially public radio. Throughout his later years, he struggled with severe depression and became involved in mental health issues as well. He was known as a gregarious and inclusive person, both in his professional and personal life, and he cultivated and treasured the many friendships he formed throughout his life.

A memorial service for Leslie Rude was held on Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at Decorah Lutheran Church, with arrangements by Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah, Iowa.

Leslie Rude is survived by his wife, Marion of Decorah, Iowa; two sons, Eric J. Rude of Chicago, Ill., and Gregg R. Rude and his wife, Kari (Bernatz) Rude, of Decorah, Iowa; and two grandsons, Jason and Jared Rude of Decorah, Iowa.

Martha Hewitt
DENVER — Martha Hewitt, 93, of Denver, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, in Margaretville.

Mrs. Hewitt was born on Oct. 8, 1905, at 152 W. 52 St., in New York City, the first of nine children, the daughter of John Sutter and Anna Burke.

Mrs. Hewitt graduated from Albany Business College and worked for a number of years for Mr. Ralph Ives.

Mrs. Hewitt married John B. Hewitt Sr., on Jan. 7, 1926, in Stamford. He died March 31, 1991. Together they ran a vacation boarding house, Crystal Spring Farm, for more than 40 years, developing lasting and dear friendships with countless families, most from New York City and Long Island. Life was "the summer families, the fall hunters, the winter skiers and the spring fishermen."

Mrs. Hewitt raised two sons; John B. Hewitt Jr. and Joseph B. Hewitt. She was an active parishioner of the Albany Diocese and Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville and contributed to various Catholic Missions worldwide. Mrs. Hewitt lived by her meaningful, strong belief in her family, church and friends.

Mrs. Hewitt is survived by a son, Joseph B. Hewitt; two sisters, Helen Ricci and Anita Benedetto; one brother, Paul Sutter; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and so many dear friends.

She was predeceased by a son, John B. Hewitt Jr.

At the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Margaretville, the family will receive visitors on Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and the funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998. Burial will be in the Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Hewitt Memorial Scholarship Fund, Roxbury Central School, care of Mrs. Sarah Porter, Box 45, Denver, N.Y. 12421; the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville; the Roxbury Library; or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Edward S. Sutton
GREENE — Edward S. Sutton, 65, of Greene died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Maryland, the son of William and Minnie (Livingston) Sutton. He married Adriane L. Smith.

Ed graduated from Schenevus Central School. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1955.

Ed was employed with Tom Illsley Construction in Port Crane as a heavy equipment operator.

He was a member of the Holy Immaculate Conception Church of Greene, the C.H. Hose Co. in Schenevus and was a mason. He enjoyed stock car racing, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Adriane L. Sutton of Greene; two brothers, Robert Sutton of Maryland and Donald Sutton of Guilford; two sisters, Marion Walrath of Schenevus and Marjorie Vaughn of Wells Bridge; four stepsons, Larry Hertzler of San Diego,  Calif., Ted Hertzler of Alaska, and Russ Hertzler and Rick Hertzler, both of Schenevus; two stepdaughters, Lynn Marble of Oneonta and Karen Hertzler of Greene; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and his three dogs, Max, Barney Boolittle and Buddy Baker.

He was predeceased by two sons, Edward S. and Bruce A. Sutton, and a brother, Sonny Sutton.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus, with the Rev. Richard Dellos, pastor of the Holy Immaculate Conception Church in Greene, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery with military honors presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Francis Gaudreau
DEPOSIT — Francis K. Gaudreau, 22, of Deposit, went home to be with his Lord, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center in  Johnson City.

He was born to Francis K. and Nancy Hillier Gaudreau, Jr. on April 20, 1976, in Sidney.

Frank served his country in the United States Army as an electronics and communications expert from 1994 to 1997.

Frank married Melissa Shampang on Jan. 23, 1998, in Deposit.

He was a member of the Masonville Federated Church and attended the Higher Ground Christian Church in Bainbridge.

Frank is survived by his wife, Melissa Gaudreau of Deposit; his son, Devon Kenneth Gaudreau of Deposit; his daughter, Destiny Miquela-Jean Gaudreau of Deposit; his parents, Francis K. and Nancy Gaudrau Jr. of Deposit; his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Suzzanne Gaudreau of Deposit; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Terry and Tano Carrillo of Sidney, June and David Furgeson of Sidney and Laura and Lorenzo Aldava of Deposit; his maternal grandfather, Edward E. Hillier; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at the Masonville Federated Church, Masonville, at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher, of the Masonville Federated Church, and the Rev. Joe Funaro, of the Higher Ground Christian Church, Bainbridge, officiating.

Friends may call Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

The committal service will be held Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in trust for Devon Kenneth and Destiny Miquela-Jean.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers, Inc. 21 Main St., Sidney.

Mary Ramessini
ONEONTA — Mary Elizabeth Hubbard Ramessini, 78, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Nov. 5, 1998, at her residence.

She was born April 29, 1920, in Norwich, the daughter of Charles and Grace ( White) Hubbard.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Ramessini was employed as a waitress in the Oneonta area. After graduating from beautician's school, she was employed at several beauty salons and at one time owned and operated her own beauty parlor. In later years she moved to Binghamton, where she was employed at the Rivermede Nursing Home. After retiring in 1989, she returned to Oneonta.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Ronald Hillis and Karen and Fred Wyckoff III; one brother and his wife, George and Angie Hubbard; four grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Blanche Long, and two brothers, John and Edward Hubbard.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Douglas Gray, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Norwich.

The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Van H. Johnson
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Van H. Johnson, 52, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at his residence.

He was born June 27, 1946, in Herkimer, the son of Bernard and Annie (Hull) Johnson.

On Oct. 23, 1971, he married Dorothy Hayes in Cherry Valley.

Mr.  Johnson was a 1965 graduate of Cherry Valley School and currently employed by D&K Rock Drilling and Blasting. He was a member of the Laborer's International Union of North America, Local 35, for 30 years and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Johnson; one son, Jaird Johnson; a brother, Bernard  Johnson Jr., all of Cherry Valley; parents-in-law, Willard and Evelyn Hayes of Canajoharie; as well as several sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick officiating.

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Cremation at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley, will take place after all public services and burial will take place at the Cherry Valley Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Gertrude Fairbairn
MARGARETVILLE — Gertrude M. Fairbairn, 77, of Margaretville, died Nov. 5, 1998, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 11, 1921, in the town of Hardenburg, the daughter of Frederick Davis and Bessie Ingram.

She married Bernard Fairbairn on July 30, 1937, in Margaretville. He died April 22, 1995.

She was a homemaker and assisted her husband on the dairy farm.

She is survived by one son, Matthew Fairbairn of Margaretville; one daughter, Bernadette Beyes of Tomkins Cove; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Sprague; one brother, Glenford Davis; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. The Rev. Hayden S. Walsh will officiate.

Burial will be in Gavette Cemetery, Millbrook Road, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, from 7-9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Walnut Street, Margaretville.

John R. Delaney
EL CAJON,  Calif. — John R. (Jack) Delaney, 70, of El Cajon,  Calif., and formerly from Oneonta, died on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at the San Diego Hospice, San Diego.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1928 in Oneonta, the son of John and Margaret (Munson) Delaney.

He was first married to the late Mary Delaney. He then married Regina Tucci on Sept. 21, 1977. She died on Aug. 6, 1994.

Jack served in World War II as a paratrooper.

Jack was employed by the New York State Department of Health as an inspector. He and his wife, Regina, moved to California in the 1980s. Jack later became a manager of a car dealership in the San Diego area.

He was a member of the VFW Post 2275, El Cajon,  Calif., and a past All American Commander.

He was well known for his easygoing manner and lighthearted humor.

He will be greatly missed by his family: his son, Kevin Delaney of Virgina Beach, Va.; his stepchildren, Gary Chamberlain of Ballston Spa, and Dawn Woodruff of San Diego; his sister, Betty Eldridge; his niece, Margaret (Peggy) Elwood; greatniece, Terri Dukes; and great-greatnieces, Riley and Maggie Dukes, all of Fairbanks, Alaska; and friends, including Al and Linda Wheelock of El Cajon,  Calif.

A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at noon, in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Susan J. Frawley
BAINBRIDGE — Susan J. Frawley, 61, of Bainbridge died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Buffalo, the daughter of Richard and Kathleen (Vallee) Danat

She has been a Tri-Town area resident for more than 32 years, and was a former employee of Amphenol Corp. in Sidney and a retired employee of The Hospital in Sidney.

Susan is survived by her mother, Kathleen Danat of Buffalo; two sons and daughters-in-laws, Thomas and Dalyce Frawley and David and Guinevere Frawley of Bainbridge; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Kathleen and Robert Robertson of Sidney and Susan and Thom Duval of Hudson, N.H.; two brothers and sisters-in-laws, Richard and Susan Danat of Henderson, Nev. and George and Sheryl Danat of Buffalo; two sisters and brothers-in-laws, Joan and Harry Bouvier of Oceanside,  Calif. and Mary and Bruce Carnes of Bowling Green, Va.; a longtime companion, Charles Hunt of Bainbridge; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney with the Rev. John L. Scott, rector of Christ Church in Gilbertsville, officiating. Burial will be in East Guilford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney from noon until service time at 1 p.m.

Friends and family are invited to attend a coffee hour at the St. Paul's Parish Hall following the memorial service.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
