Irene H. Towers
NEW BERLIN — Irene H. Towers, 90, of New Berlin and formerly of Massapequa, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born July 8, 1908, in Lawrence, the daughter of Dennis and Mary Ellen (Archer) McCarthy.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Joseph Towers in 1961.

Irene was a homemaker. She had been previously employed as a telephone operator for the Board of Transportation from which she retired.

She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Ann and Gil Lewis of Edmeston and Judith Adams-O'Hagen and George O'Hagen of Massapequa; her grandchildren, Brian Lewis, Diane Lucia, Linda Walsh, Misty Adams and Angela Adams.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Long Island.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Irene's memory to Chase Nursing Home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Richard Burgher Sr.
ONEONTA — Richard Burgher Sr., 71, died suddenly Wednesday morning, Nov. 25, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Richard was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Oneonta, the son of Ezra and Hazel (Fullington) Burgher.

He married Colleen Knapp on April 24, 1953, in Oneonta.

Mr. Burgher was an Air Force veteran of World War II. Richard was employed by General Motors in Syracuse before moving to Oneonta. He then did carpentry work with his father until he was hired by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. He was a conductor for the D&H Railroad for 40 years, until he retired in 1992. Since his retirement he has worked part time for the Oneonta Daily Star.

Richard belonged to the First Baptist Church of Oneonta and the American Legion and Eagles Clubs of Oneonta and the United Transportation Union.

Richard was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Burgher; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Roberta and Jim Juser of Friendsville, Pa., Sherry and Ron Decker of Otego, Shirley and Charles Erikson of Laurens, Norma and John O'Conner of Binghamton, Patricia Burgher of Oneonta and Joyce and Ralph Rusaw of Indiana; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Chris Burgher Jr. of Oneonta; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Norman Knapp and Amos Hunt of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. His pastor, the Rev. Douglas D. Oelke, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday morning until service time.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Katherine George
NEW LISBON — Katherine Ida George, 90, of New Lisbon, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born April 13, 1908, in Edmeston, the daughter of Leon and Jessie (Stephens) Angell.

She was married to Myron George on June 16, 1934, in Brookfield. He passed away Aug. 16, 1997.

Katherine and her husband had operated a general store and post office in New Lisbon for several years until their retirement in 1979.

She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, she was a matron of the Edmeston chapter and the Jewell chapter of Morris. In 1968, she had served as past grand officer and had also been a member of the Laurens Chapter.

She is survived by her son, Deland George, and his wife, Marion, of New Lisbon; a brother, Lavern Angell, and his wife, Cora, of Rome; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at 1 p.m. in the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. Wilfred Lyon officiating.

Committal services and burial will follow in the Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from noon on Saturday until service time at 1 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Nancy DeGroat
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Nancy DeGroat, 49, of R.D. 1, South New Berlin, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Little Falls Hospital, after an extended illness.

A daughter of George and Lillian Struble Walton, she was born on Aug. 22, 1949, in Franklin, N.J. Raised and educated in New Jersey, she has lived locally since 1976.

Surviving besides her parents of Newton, N.J., are one son, Henry Wise of West Winfield; four daughters, Cindy Morris of Durham, N.C., Brenda Defino of Buffalo, Bridget Griffis of Binghamton and Linda Wise of West Winfield; a sister, Beverly Fancher of Newton, N.J.; six grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1 p.m. in the Unadilla Forks Baptist Church.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Mary Ellen Scutt
CONESVILLE — Mary Ellen Scutt, 75, of Bull Hill Road, Conesville, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, Nov. 26, 1998, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill.

She was born May 10, 1923, in the town of Conesville, the daughter of C. Lyle and Rachel (Gardner) Haner.

She married Alton G. Scutt on Nov. 16, 1940, in Manorkill.

A lifelong Conesville resident, she was a graduate of Gilboa High School.

A homemaker most of her life, Mary Ellen also worked briefly as a nurse's aide. She was a member of the Conesville United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed sewing and making quilts for many years.

Surviving are her loving husband of 58 years, Alton Scutt, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Jim Stanton of  Jefferson and Kendra and Don Cornell of Conesville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lawrence "Buz" and Emma Scutt of Leesville, La., and Randall Scutt of Kinderhook; 11 grandchildren, Christopher and Selena Putman, Holly Scutt, Luther Mount, Deborah Bendel, Paul Scutt, and Zane, Travis, Lacey, Kim and Donnie Cornell; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Lois Haner, Dorothy B. Kirk and Clara J. "Betsy" Smith; and two brothers, Donald E. "Tim" Haner and Stanley L. Haner.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at the Conesville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Martha Vink, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Manorkill Rural Cemetery.

Friends may call on Sunday afternoon and evening at the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, where the family will be in attendance 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Conesville Rescue Squad or the Conesville United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Marian Bezold
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Marian Bezold, 65, of Sylvan Street, died on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion.

She was born on May 10, 1933, in New York City, the daughter of the late Arthur Paul and Marian Looram Bezold.

Marion came to Richfield Springs as a young girl and was educated in Richfield Springs schools. She had worked as a housekeeper in homes around the area. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.

She is survived by a cousin, Mary Lou Bezold.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at 9:30 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 West James St., Richfield Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Maryalice Brenn
STAMFORD — Maryalice Brenn, 78, of Route 23, Grand Gorge Road, died Thursday, Nov 26, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 19, 1920, at Rhinebeck, the daughter of Rev. Roscoe and Alice (Bassford) Penny.

She was married to Forrest Brenn on Dec. 5, 1945, in Oneonta.

She has been a lifelong area resident, a graduate of Grand Gorge Central School and for many years she owned and operated a dairy farm with her husband.

Maryalice was a member of the Grange Gorge United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Forrest Brenn of Stamford; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Charles E. Brenn.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec 1, 1998, at the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Vink, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home in Grand Gorge at their convenience after 3 p.m. today. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Maryalice's memory to either the Stamford Baptist Church Bus Fund, 40 Lake St, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

Almireta (Reta) Boyes Dyer
DAVENPORT — Almireta (Reta) Boyes Dyer, 83, of Davenport passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Andes, the daughter of John D. and Irene Elwood  Jackson Boyes.

She married Nayham S. Dyer of April 28, 1934, and he predeceased her on Dec. 16, 1971.

A graduate of Davenport United Free High School, she was a bookkeeper most of her younger life. She ran the diner in Davenport for several years and worked at Audio Sears in Stamford for 21 years retiring at the age of 75. She was a member of the Davenport Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Dyer is survived by five daughters and a son: Joyce Wright of Homosassa Springs, Fla., Gail and Ray Christensen of Davenport Center, Judy and Richard Sanford of Davenport, Janet and William Cody of Davenport Center, Karen Dyer of Webster, Mass, Robert and Sharon Dyer of Mansfield, Pa.; 27 grandchildren and their spouses totaling 45; 46 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Every of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters.

Calling hours will take place Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Route 10, Delhi, N.Y. 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Victor John Porto
LUTHER FOREST — Victor John Porto, 82, of Luther Forest in Malta died peacefully at Saratoga Hospital on Friday, Nov. 27, 1998.
Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of Ignazio and Elizabeth Porto of Huntington, Long Island. Victor lived on Long Island for most of his life until moving upstate in 1976 and to Malta in 1984.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and served under General Patton in the European theatre, receiving several meritorious citations as a first lieutenant.

Mr. Porto worked as regional manager of Hill's Supermarkets on Long Island and as gift shop manager at Ponytales in the Saratoga Racecourse.

He was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the New York Yankees. He loved gardening and woodworking as well as horseracing, family trips to Atlantic City, Foxwoods, Turning Stone and Broadway plays in New York City.

He was a devoted husband for 55 years to Eve Ann, and father to his sons, Victor of Delhi, Stephen of Saratoga Springs, and daughters, Kathleen (Kacy) Schaffer of Stony Brook, Long Island and Jane Fratelli of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He is survived by his brothers, Albert of Farmingdale, Long Island and Charles of Greenlawn, Long Island; nine loving grandchildren, Ian, Kimberly, Alyssa, Rebecca, Cameron, Thomas, Francesca, Andrew and Sicily as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Porto was predeceased by his brothers, John and Salvatore, and sisters, Blanche, Josephine and Frances.

Calling hours were held on Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Setauket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Setauket. Burial with full military honors will be in Veteran's National Cemetery in Calverton.

Dennis E. Rogers
HAMDEN — Dennis E. Rogers, 55, of Launt Hollow, Hamden died unexpectedly Saturday evening, Nov. 28, 1998, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born March 10, 1943, in Oceanside, the son of Charles A. and Frances V. (Cusimano) Rogers.

Dennis grew up in Bellmore, Long Island, where he was a 1961 graduate of Mepham High School. He married Carole Klee on Jan. 26, 1974, in Bellmore.

A machinest by trade, he moved to Hamden in 1989, and was employed at Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Carole Rogers; a daughter and a son, Jennifer and Brian Rogers, all at home; a brother, Charles Rogers of Lindenhurst; and a sister, Patricia Haines of Bohemia; one niece and nephew; and his mother-in-law, Evelyn Klee of Hamden.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, by the Rev. Fr. Joseph Manerowski, pastor of St. Peter's R.C. Church, Delhi. Cremation will be private.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
