Brad P. Coon
GILBERTSVILLE — Brad P. Coon, 18, of Gilbertsville, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in the town of Butternuts, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Brad was born in Sidney, the son of Bruce Coon and Annabeth (Stark) Coon.

He was a graduate of the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School, Class of 1999. He was contemplating advanced education in the near future. He enjoyed hiking and cycling. He was a former member of the Gilbertsville Boy Scout Troop and also the Explorer Post in Gilbertsville.

Brad is survived by his father, Bruce, and his mother, Annabeth; a brother, Bruce Coon Jr. of Gilbertsville; maternal grandmother, Myrtha Stark of Gilbertsville; paternal grandmother, Florence Coon of Preston; and several aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Gilbertsville, with the Rev. Randolph Palada officiating. Burial will follow in the Butternuts Valley (Copes Corners) Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until service time at the church on Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

James Dustin Dorn
GILBERTSVILLE — James Dustin Dorn, 18, of Gilbertsville, passed away early Saturday morning, Aug. 21, 1999, from injuries sustained in a car accident in the town of Butternuts.

He was born in Oneonta. Dustin grew up in the Gilbertsville and Butternuts areas, attending Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School, and graduating with the Class of 1999, earning a Regents diploma with honors. A well-rounded and lovable individual, Dustin was a person who respected others and also had the respect of those who knew him.

For the past three to four years, as well as this summer, he had worked summers and weekends for Mark Harvey, building custom furniture, restoring older homes and doing generally any type of construction work. He had also been working with Hideaki Tsuda, building fences and harvesting wheat, and other types of farm jobs. Dustin also enjoyed taking care of the family animals at home. He was an avid ice fisherman and skier.

He was born Oct. 30, 1980. Dustin was the son of Christopher and Marjorie (Beckingham) Dorn.

He is survived by his parents, Christopher and Marjorie Dorn of Gilbertsville; his brother, Matthew Dorn, also of Gilbertsville; and his maternal grandparents, Theodore and Barbara Beckingham of East Springfield. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Dustin was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Albert and Lois Dorn.

Funeral services for Dustin will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall of Norwich. Elder Paul Cunningham of the Jehovah's Witness will preside. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gilbertsville Fire Department-Emergency Squad, Box 72, Gilbertsville, N.Y. 13776. Checks should be made payable to the Gilbertsville Fire Department-Emergency Squad.

Lura `Peg' Elliott
MORRIS — Lura "Peg" Elliott, 77, of Meadow Lane, Morris, died at her home on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, of A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Her body has been donated for A.L.S. research.

Peg and her family are most grateful to the Catskill Area Hospice for its tender care, to the United Methodist Church pastor and congregation, to the Morris Emergency Squad members, to the community, friends and neighbors for the prayers and all the loving kindness and care given to them.

Peg married Edward A. Elliott on Oct. 6, 1940, and together they have made their home in Morris for the past 59 years.

Peg is survived by her husband; her son, Lynn, and his wife, Jean; her daughter, Julie French, and her husband, Peter; and her daughter, Jamie Johnson, and her husband, Earl. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will be in attendance at coffee fellowship hours in the United Methodist Church social rooms in Morris, on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, from 7 p.m. on.

A Thanksgiving service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Morris, on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at 7 p.m.

Harold C. Hotaling
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Mr. Harold C. Hotaling, 88, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Oneonta died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at the Westbrook Manor Hospice, Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born March 27, 1911, in the town of Meredith (Delaware County), the son of Nathan D. and Margaret Parrish Hotaling.

Harold was twice married. His first wife, the former Marion Schutt, married him Aug. 8, 1940. She died Nov. 11, 1972. His second marriage was to the former Sarah  Johnson on March 10, 1974. She died Feb. 13, 1996.

Harold had been a foreman for the Delaware County Highway Department, retiring April 1, 1974, after 32 years of service. During his lifetime Harold had lived in East Meredith, Delhi, Walton and Deposit. In his younger years Harold had worked for the Leland Tuttle Trucking Co. in Delhi, before his working years for Delaware County. Harold has lived in Zephyrhills, Fla., for the past 23 years.

Harold is survived by a stepson, Donald Rampe of Davenport; stepdaughter and her husband, Joyce and Bert Roberts of Arnold's Lake and Amherst, two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph A. Fiske, retired Methodist Mmnister, officiating. Burial will be in East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 12107 Majestic Boulevard, Hudson, Fla. 34667 in memory of Harold Hotaling.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Marion C. Riese
WORCESTER — Marion C. (Patrick) Riese, 84, of Worcester, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at her home, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 7, 1914, in Richmondville, the daughter of Homer and Hazel (Mitchell) Patrick.

She married Leo "Jack" Riese on July 29, 1933, in Cobleskill. He predeceased her on Oct. 10, 1985.

Marion was a lifelong area resident. She worked at the Elm Store in Worcester, the Brownell Department Store in Worcester, The Old Grange Market in Worcester for many years and Jamesway in Oneonta for 11 years retiring at the age of 60 in 1974.

Marion was a member of the Worcester First Presbyterian Church, she attended the Presbyterian Women's Association in Worcester, she was on the Worcester Bowling League and she was a member of the Home Bureau in Worcester.

Marion is survived by one son, John H. Riese of Ellenburg Center; four daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Whitley of Worcester, Mrs. Roena Peck of Northport, Fla., Mrs. Lois Downin of Gladewater,  Texas, and Patricia Riese of Worcester; 16 grandchildren, Donald Dahms Jr. of North Carolina, Charlene Morell of New York, Joe Dahms Sr. of New York, Geraldine Roe of New York, Douglas Dahms of North Carolina, Cherie Ralph of New York, Joseph Benyo of Alaska, Peggy Benyo of Tennessee, Robert Benyo of Alaska, Harold N. Southworth of New York, Pamela McCoy of New York, Penny Currie of New York, Robert Christman of Virginia, Bryan Christman of New York, Patricia Reilly of New York and April Riese of New York; 32 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Donald E. Patrick.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel,in Worcester

Charles Traphagen
DELHI — Charles A. Traphagen, 86, of Delhi, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born May 5, 1913, in Hunter, the son of Ralph A. and Mae Haner Traphagen.

He married Catherine L. Mason on July 26, 1941.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine, at home; a son, Tom Traphagen of Oneonta; a daughter, Charlene McCall of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister, Unis Munson of Oregon.

Mr. Traphagen was a graduate of Delhi Agricultural Institute in the Teacher Training Class of 1933; Oneonta Normal School in 1937; Albany State Teacher's College, 1940; Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, with a master's of arts degree in administration, supervision and guidance. He started teaching in one-room schools with all eight grades and continued to work in education as a grade supervisor, administrator and director of guidance for a total of 37½years in education, retiring from Stamford Central School.

In 1949, he had the responsibility for developing the curriculum for a new school being formed, Onteora Central School, outside of Kingston. In doing so he created a unique arrangement of combining grades six, seven, and eight into two years, thereby allowing students with above average scholastic aptitude to take more subjects in a five-year high school program. Eventually the success of this program came to the attention of the national newsmagazine, "U.S. News and World Report." A reporter and cameraman were sent to the school, and a write-up concerning the program appeared in the magazine.

On his first wedding anniversary he entered the United States Air Force and spent 3½ years in the Air Force during World War II, 18 months of which was spent in Italy in the Air Force Meteorological squadron.

Mr. Traphagen was a vestryman in St. Johns Episcopal Church; member of Delhi American Legion; life member of Disabled American Veterans Association; honorary life member of New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers for his work in education; inclusion in "Who's Who in the East" published by Marqur's publications for his work in education. In 1976, and again in 1983, he was selected to receive the Delaware County Office for the Aging award for volunteer work done for senior citizens of Delaware County.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware, with the Rev. Frank Crenshaw and the Rev. Paul Hartt officiating. Calling hours will take place today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Delhi Emergency Squad, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Robert C. Bartow
SIDNEY — Robert C. Bartow, 75, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, at his home.

He was born June 29, 1924, in Dodgeville, Wis. He was raised his Aunt Anne and Grandma Schwartz.

Bob married Patricia Conley on March 6, 1948, in Lancaster, Wis.

He served his country in the United States Navy submarine division No. 128 during World War II. He attended Plattsville Teachers College.

Bob was employed by Borden's Chemical Co. from 1947-1968, and then worked at UNA-LAM of Sidney as an accountant from 1968 until he retired. He was an avid RV traveler of all the states but Alaska. Bob was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney and a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post 183, Sidney, and a member of the VFW Corporal R.H. Arrandale post 7914, Sidney. He was a member for 30 years and a secretary for eight years of Lodge of the Elks No. 2175. Bob also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross and The Hospital, Sidney.

Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Bartow of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Barb Bartow of Joliet, Ill. and Rod and Dawn Bartow of Bainbridge; one daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Bob Dedrick of Bainbridge; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Evie Schwartz of Wauzeka, Wis., Kerwin and Bea Bartow of Greendale, Wis. and Keith Bartow and his wife of Warsaw, Poland; mother-in-law, Avis Conley of Muscoda, Wis.; sister-in-law, Gwen Conley of Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren, Jeremy Bartow and his wife, Andy Bartow and his friend, Bryon and Jason Bartow, Steve and Leslie Dix, Jim Dix and Renea Bair and nine great-grandchildren, Rhiannon, Patrick, Robbie, Casey, Shelly, Cody, Darian, Hunter and Nicole.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Aug. 22, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 7 p.m. The Lodge of the Elks 2175 of Sidney will officiate. Pastor Roanne MacEwan, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Sidney will follow the Elks service.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., in Sidney.

Edwin H. Johanson
DELHI — After an extended illness, Edwin H. Johanson, 82, left us to join his maker.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1916 in Brooklyn, the son of Edwin H. and Lillian Johanson.

He worked as a machinist journeyman in New York for a number of companies, supplying the U.S. war machine (including Sperry Gyroscope and Fairchild Aviation). Because they would not release him to join the armed forces, he left his job and became a merchant seaman on ships supplying our forces in the Pacific Theatre. During the war, he worked the U.S. Army Transport, serving as deck engineer. He also worked for Socony Vaccum Oil on the S.S. Syosset.

After his service in the Pacific, for which he received an honorary discharge from the Coast Guard, he decided to pursue an early dream and bough a dairy farm in Delhi, called the "Maple Shade Farm" where he spent many happy years. Later he accepted a job as a stationery engineer at SUNY Delhi where he worked until his final retirement, after which he continued to enhance his beautiful farm with more flowers and trees.

Mr. Johanson was a member of the Springfield Gardens Lodge F and AM No. 1057, Rockville Center and the American Legion Post No. 0190.

His wife, Lillian, at home, his sister-in-law, Dorothy, cousins, friends and neighbors survive him.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi with Rev. Mark Chatterton of the United Ministry Church officiating.

Calling hours will take place at the funeral home preceding the service from 1-2 p.m. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Delhi Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi

Gertrude H. Peck
AUSTIN,  Texas — Gertrude Harvey Peck passed away at her home in Austin,  Texas, which she shared with her daughter, Susan.

She is survived by Susan; granddaughters, Deborah Van Allen, Elizabeth and Donal Koszelak; two great-grandsons, Benjamin and Nicholas Koszelak, all of Austin,  Texas; her son, William Peck and his wife Patricia and granddaughter, Kathleen; grandson, Robert and his wife Maria, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and grandson, Edward, of Albany. Also surviving is her brother-in-law, Guy Rathbun of Morris and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was born in Cooperstown to Matthias Harvey and Charlotte Hibbard Harvey. She attended schools in Cooperstown, graduating from high school in 1921. She continued her education by studying nursing at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, but left her senior year to marry Clifford Peck on Aug. 6, 1925 and set up their home in Richfield Springs.

She was predeceased by Clifford Dec. 26, 1983, since then making her home with her daughter Susan. The last 15 years she has moved from Poughkeepsie to Murfreesboro, Tenn. and in 1997 she moved to Austin to be near her granddaughters and to share her wisdom in the riaisng of her special great-grandsons.

At some time in the future, her ashes will be carried home and placed side by side with her beloved husband Clip in the Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield.

John E. Weitzel
ONEONTA — John E. Weitzel, 86, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace in Stamford where he currently resided.

He was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Honeybrook, Pa., the son of William and Ida (Filmore) Weitzel.

He married Rachel Wakin on Nov. 20, 1941, in St. Mary's Church. She died Feb. 17, 1990.

John retired in 1973 from the D&H Railroad where he was employed for close to 30 years as a painter.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Sam and Joyce Weitzel Sr. of Oneonta, Patricia and Wayne Balnis Sr. of Oneonta and Mary and Dan Tranvaag of Oneonta; his brother, Robert Weitzel of  Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Bucky Weitzel, Mary Pat Wilson, Laurie Page, Wayne Balnis Jr., Sherry Balnis and Mike and Dave Tranvaag. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Eleanor Lee Ahern

WESTFORD — Eleanor Lee Ahern, 86, of Westford died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 24, 1913, in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Michael and Johanna (Murphy) Lee.

She married John Ahern on April 7, 1947, in Cherry Valley. He predeceased her on July 21, 1974.

Eleanor was a registered nurse in the Army Nurse Corps serving during World War II. She was discharged the rank of captain.

Eleanor lived in Westford from 1949 to 1994, when she moved to the Schohanna Adult Home in Worcester.

She received her Registered Nurse license at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. She worked in Boston and New York City as a registered nurse, before enlisting in the Army.

Eleanor graduated from the Westfield High School.

She was a member of the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and Rosary Society in Worcester and the Worcester American Legion Post No. 1584.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mady Ahern and their children, Hannah and Eliza Ahern of New York City; a daughter, Joanna Ahern and her daughter, Bridget Farruggla of Elk Creek; a son-in-law, Samuel Farruggla of Cookville, Tenn.; two sisters, Katherine and husband, Joe Storey of New Britain, Conn. and Dorothy and husband, Lyman Gomme of Terryville, Conn.; one sister-in-law, Beth Lee of Nottingham Shire, England; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by four brothers, John, James, Francis and Joseph Lee, one sister, Mary Santaniello and one sister-in-law, Mary Ahern.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding, as the celebrant.

Burial will take place at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester, with military honors, conducted by the Worcester American Legion.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester. A recitation of the rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 8:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Eleanor to the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box, 187, Westford, N.Y. 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

DeForest A. Yerdon

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. DeForest A. Yerdon, 83, passed away Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at his home in Cherry Valley.

He was born July 12, 1916, in the town of Cherry Valley, the son of Charles and Ruth (Utter) Yerdon.

On Oct. 4, 1935, he married Mae Elliott in Oneonta, she survives.

Mr. Yerdon was a 1934 graduate of Cherry Valley High School.

He was a disabled veteran who served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He owned and operated a Mobil Gas Station in Cherry Valley until he became employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier until his retirement after 40 years of service.

Mr. Yerdon was a former member of the Cherry Valley Fire Department for 20 years, a member of the IOOF of Cherry Valley, a 50-plus year member of the Disabled Veterans Association, and the American Legion.

Besides his wife of almost 64 years, Mae Yerdon of Cherry Valley, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Seth and Elaine Yerdon of Cherry Valley, David and Donna Yerdon of Lynchburg, Va., and Gary and Janice Yerdon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; six grandchildren, Tracy Moylan and her husband, John of Cherry Valley, Cheryl Myint and her husband, Mike of Antioch, Tenn., Mellany Knightly and her husband, David of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Dinah Yerdon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Daniel Yerdon and his wife, Michelle of Lynchburg, Va., Monica deBruyker and her husband, Roy of Lake Worth, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Yerdon was predeceased by his sister, Edna Horning in 1997.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. By his request, there will be no public services. Cremation took place at The Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.

Contributions in Mr. Yerdon's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad or charity of donor's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
