Virginia M. Reed
ONEONTA — Mrs. Virginia M. Reed, 85, formerly of Malone, died Thursday evening, Oct. 7, 1999.

Mrs. Reed was born May 20, 1914, in Granton, the daughter of Samuel J. and Mathelida (Chamberlain) Moore.

She married Robert R. Reed on March 26, 1937, in Hamden.

Virginia's father was the owner and operator of the Ferndale Farms Creamery in Hamden. She graduated in 1930 from Downsville High School and attended Skidmore College for one year.

Virginia and her husband jointly owned and operated the Hotel Chateaugay from 1954 until 1965. Virginia then became the executive secretary for the Malone Chamber of Commerce until her retirement in 1979. After her retirement, Virginia and her husband moved to Lakeland, Fla. They returned to the Oneonta area in 1995 to be near their family.

She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Reed of Cooperstown; two daughters, Elizabeth Currier of Cooperstown and Marilyn Hopper of Windsor, Conn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia's family will have a private service at their convenience. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are through the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Thomas McMahon
RICHMOND, Va. — Thomas M. McMahon, 77, died Oct. 5, 1999, in Richmond, Va., after a brief illness.

He was born in Geneva and lived in Oneonta for the past 25 years, retiring in 1984 from F.N. Burt.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; two daughters, Jane McMahon of Richmond and Ellen Pung of Silver Spring, Md.; a son-in-law, Donald Pung; two grandchildren, Katie Pung and Kurtis Pung; and a brother, Robert McMahon of Palmetto, Fla.

He was predeceased by his parents, Reitha and Thomas McMahon, and a brother, Donald McMahon.

Mr. McMahon served in the 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was employed by F.N. Burt Co. for 33 years. He served on the Oneonta Town Planning Board, Fox Hospital Board, Oneonta Country Club Board, Chamber of Commerce and the Otschodela Boy Scout Council.

A memorial service has been planned for Oct. 23, 1999, at 1 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva.

Memorial donations may be made to your local Hospice.

Gordon L. (Jim) Angell
ONEONTA — Gordon L. (Jim) Angell, 67, of Oneonta, R.D. died of cancer at this home Friday, Oct. 8, 1999.

He was born in the town of Butternuts on Nov. 10, 1931, the son of Leon and Grace (Young) Angell.

Jim attended school in Mount Upton, and was a painting contractor in this area for most of his life except for 10 years in  Texas City,  Texas, prior to his retirement.

He married the former Katherine Franzese in Oneonta on May 11, 1974.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine, a son and his wife, Michael and Yvonne Angell of Otego, R.D.; two daughters and their husbands, Gail and Audie Yager of Oneonta and Debra and Gregory Horth of Hartwick, R.D.; seven grandchildren, Douglas and Corina Yager of Oneonta, Jonathan, Joshua and Jacob Horth of Hartwick, R.D., Nicholas and Nichole Angell of Otego, R.D.; a stepson and his wife, Joseph and Marietta Franzese of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Patricia Franzese of Provincetown, Mass., two stepgrandchildren, Sara Franzese at Southern Methodist University, Dallas,  Texas and Joey Franzese of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Bryan; brothers, Ronald, Roger, Robert and Rolland Angell; and a sister, Rose Beebe.

Jim's special interests were his woodworking — he crafted many original pieces of furniture for his home. He enjoyed working out of doors and spent many happy hours in his flower garden. He loved animals: His special cat `Charlie Brown` kept a vigil by his bedside all during his illness.

There are no calling hours or formal services. Jim's family will sustain themselves in their grief with fond memories of their loved one.

Jim's ashes will be interred at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Those who wish may contribute in his memory to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the Bookhout Funeral Home.

Robert G. Beames
AFTON — Robert G. Beames, 61, of Afton died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1938, in Butternuts, the son of Claira (Ballard) Beames and the late C. Glenn Beames.

Bob served in the National Guard.

He married Anne Baker on Feb. 2, 1963, in Athens, Pa.

Bob was a founding member of the family business, G. Beames & Sons, in 1956, in Afton.

He was an honorary member of the Afton Hose Co., the past chief and fire commissioner for the town of Afton, and Bob was voted Fireman of the Year in Chenango County in 1980.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Ann Beames of Afton; his mother, Claira Beames of Oneonta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Connie Beames of Afton, John and Christie Walker of Afton and Robert and Linda Finch of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Kevin Hoblin of Afton and Roberta and Thomas Austin of Walton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Sydney Beames of Afton and Berton and Vicky Beames of Otego; one sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and Fran Secor of Otego; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Avery of Franklin and Una and Robert Schultz of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1 p.m.

Friends may call Wednesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Afton Fire Department, Afton Emergency Squad or the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak Ave., Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Sidney.

Maggie Mae Furgerson
DELHI — Maggie Mae Furgerson, 96, of Delhi died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Countryside Care Center, where she had been residing for the past 2½ years.

She was born May 21, 1903, in Sabensville, Pa., one of six children of Harry and Nellie (Spencer) Mann.

Maggie grew up in the Andes area, and married Fred E. Furgerson on Sept. 4, 1929, in Arena. He died Nov. 12, 1963.

A 65-year Delhi resident, Maggie was a homemaker and cared for many area children through those years.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick G. Furgerson and Gerald E. `Jake` and his wife, Roberta `Bobbie` Furgerson, all of North Franklin; her grandchildren, Sandra Furgerson and her companion, Jack Harrington of Sherburne, Gerald T. and his wife, Betsy Furgerson of Schenevus, and Suzanne and her husband, Shawn Patrick of Sidney Center; and three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Patrick and Holly and David Furgerson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased in 1971 by a daughter, Dorothy A. Furgerson.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. and where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, by the Rev. Bert More. Burial will follow in the Andes Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

John Joseph Jakszewski
ANDES — John Joseph Jakszewski passed away in the company of his loving family early Sunday morning, Oct. 10, 1999, at the age of 90 years.

John was born in Brooklyn on March 25, 1909, the son of Joseph and Sophia Langner Jakszewski.

In 1914, he and his family moved to a farm on Gladstone Hollow Road in Andes. John spent his youth running the farm with his father until he began working as a carpenter. One of his first jobs was in construction of the Andes Central School. He served as decking foreman in the construction of the Pepacton and worked in maintaining New York state's water supply. Other titles John held include Andes town assessor and construction inspector for the Farmers Home Administration of Delaware, Schoharie and Albany Counties. John worked for both R. Carl VanKeuran of Margaretville and Miss Angelica Gerry, as well as being self-employed for several years.

John married Virginia Bramley at the St. James Church on April 17, 1949, where the two were members since its dedication. John and Virginia lived for 31 years on Main Street in Andes.

At St. James, John, served on the Parish Council. He became a junior warden on the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church in Waynesboro, Va., when John and Virginia retired there in 1980. John was an avid gardener for many years and a masterful furniture and cabinet maker. His many creations will be cherished by family and friends for years to come.

John is survived by his wife, Virginia; his daughter, Lorna Zelman and her husband, Dr. Russell Zelman of Little Falls; his grandchildren, Neil Krick, Holly Krick and Michael Zelman; his niece, Mrs. Frances Bramley; his nephew, Mr. David Monroe of Oneonta; his sister and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff and Frances Bramley of Margaretville, Mr. Don Bramley of Andes, Mr. and Mrs. Garland and Barbara Gladstone of Norwich, Mrs. Betty Gallup of Unadilla; many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Halina Monroe and Hattie Dzurissin.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Lake Delaware, with the Rev. Frank S. Crenshaw, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in Andes Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary C. Naples
EAST WORCESTER — Mary C. Naples, 89, of East Worcester died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the A.0. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born May 3, 1910, in Quinn, S.D., the daughter of Jakob and Anna (Zinner) Muehl and Katherine (Schmall) Muehl.

She married George P. Naples on May 4, 1935, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester.

Mrs. Naples lived in the East Worcester area for 73 years.

She was a retired school cafeteria worker for the East Worcester and Worcester schools.

Mrs. Naples was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Worcester, the Alter Rosary Society, the Homemakers Club of East Worcester, and a charter member of the East Worcester Fire Department Auxiliary.

Mrs. Naples is survived by her daughter, Helen M. and her husband, Ray Tiffany of East Worcester; two sons, Frederick G. Naples of East Worcester and Paul J. and his wife, Louise Naples of Worcester; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ottillie Ferrara of Oneonta, Elizabeth Michaud of Cortland and Rosalie Ryan of Owego; two brothers, Michael and his wife, Lois Muehl of Oneonta and Jacob and his wife, Vi Muehl of Worcester; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, George, on Sept. 27, 1983; a sister, Catherine Clark; two brothers, Martin and Anton (Tony) Muehl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The family will be in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a recitation of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 8:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Naples to the East Worcester Fire Department, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, N.Y. 12064 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Alice Lena Pierce
ONEONTA — Mrs. Alice Lena Pierce, 101, formerly of Otego died Saturday morning, Oct. 9, 1999, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

Alice was born June 27, 1898, in Otego, the daughter of Willis Adelbert and Ann Lovica (Waite) Secor.

She married Ira Pierce in Otego on June 27, 1918, and was married to him for 70 years, until his death on Sept. 5, 1988.

Alice lived on Mill Creek Road in Otego for 50 years. In 1981, she moved to Oneonta and was a resident of The Meadows for the last 11 years.

Alice was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church and served as missionary treasurer for several years.

Alice is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Lee and Albertine Pierce of Oneonta; and a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and the Rev. Donald Moreland of Leesburg, Va.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Stuart Pierce, in 1928.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with her grandson, the Rev. John Zoller, and the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Bennett Cemetery, West Laurens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the West Oneonta Baptist Church in Alice's memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Jeanette Samson
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Jeanette Samson, 58, of Vaughn Road passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in Oneida Healthcare Center, Oneida.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1941, a daughter of Ronald and the late Florence Wiebrecht Friswell.

She was raised and educated in Hartwick, Mass. In 1989, she came to Richfield Springs.

She was the administrator for Rosewood Homes. Jeanette was always known for lending a helping hand to the ones who needed it, and had a special love for her cats and dogs.

Surviving are one son, Ronald Samson of Middleboro, Mass.; her father, Ronald Friswell of Richfield Springs; and her special friend and companion, Albert Stanfield of Richfield Springs,

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of her family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society or the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements are with the J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Donald D. Sander
DELHI — Donald D. Sander, 72, of Delhi died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born March 10, 1927, in Greenwood, Neb., the son of Wilhelm and Frieda (Werner) Sander.

He married Irene (Schwengber) in April 1952, in Oneonta. Mrs. Sander survives him as well as a son, Michael and his wife, Tina of Holley; a daughter, Karen and her husband, Stanley Barber of Davenport; grandchildren, Adrienne, Jennifer, Stephanie, Tiffany Sander, Jamie and Ginger Barber; one sister and brother-in-law, Frieda and Frank Snyder; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilhelm and Helen Sander and Henry and Freda Sander, all of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sander moved to Delhi in 1942, and graduated from South Kortright Central School in 1944.

He farmed for 23 years, drove a school bus for more than 20 years for South Kortright Central School, and developed and operated Pinehaven Campsite.

Memberships included Atonement Lutheran Church, where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the church council, and served on the Kortright Town Board.

A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Therese B. Staudohar
BEDFORD HILLS — Therese B. Staudohar, 84, of Bedford Hills died on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleep Hollow.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1915, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of Karl and Katherine (Felden) Stork.

Therese is survived by her husband, Joseph P. Staudohar of Bedford Hills; her son, Joel Staudorhar of Worcester; her daughter, Consuelo Pasquale of Stoney Point; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Worcester.

Contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Staudohar to the Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Elizabeth Timberlake
ONEONTA — Elizabeth Timberlake, 75, of Oneonta and formerly of Brooklyn passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born to the late Anthony and Claire Miller Woll on Jan. 30, 1924, in Brooklyn.

Elizabeth is survived by two sons, Ronald Smith and his fiancee, Joan Fullington of Sidney, and Peter Timberlake of Binghamton; one brother, Anthony Woll of Brooklyn; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 2 p.m. Friends may call Tuesday, Oct. 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Gladys Irene Welch
CHERRY VALLEY — Ms. Gladys I. Welch, 78, passed away Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born May 14, 1921, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Orlando and Nellie (Page) Bridger.

She attended Cherry Valley Central School, was a longtime member of the Phoenix, Ariz., VFW, and an avid baseball fan of the Mets. She loved to read to her great-grandchildren, do crossword puzzles, and most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Joan Weiner, whom she resided with of Cherry Valley, Norma Duncan of Richfield Springs and Laraine and Albert Loomis of Utica; a son, David Morton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman and Ida Mae Bridger of Cooperstown and David and Mereitta Bridger of Roseboom; eight sisters and five brothers-in-law, Hilda Pomery of Fulton, Elizabeth and Robert O'Brien, Mildred and Gerald Jennings of Cooperstown, Cora Petrucco of Cortland, Wanda Layman, Evelyn and Gordon Gray, Wilma and Roland Dyer, Lois and Gene Smith; and a sister-in-law, Rose Bridger, all of Cooperstown; nine grandchildren, Tony and Gail Miles of Cherry Valley, Sherry and Henry VanBrink of Georgia, Jeffery and Laura Miles of East Springfield, Sophie and Russ  Johnson of Cherry Valley, Anna Clements of Richfield Springs; eight great-grandchildren, Tonya, Austin, Austin Jr. Daley, Craig and Ashley Miles,  Taylor Miles, Alec Denninger, Ethan Johnson; two stepgrandchildren and their husbands, Cecile and Lynn Cohen and family of Syracuse, and Dena and David Rozenholc and family of New York City; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, with Mr. Lyman  Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the funeral home.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Morton; two brothers, Chester and Frederick Bridger; and a son-in-law, George Weiner.

Contributions in Ms. Welch's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Fire Department, Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
