Martha A. Perry
ONEONTA — Martha A. Perry, 101, died Friday afternoon, Oct. 22, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Mrs. Perry was born July 23, 1898, in Oneonta, the daughter of Charles and Jeanette (Perry) Terry.

Martha married Raymond H. Perry in Albany on March 16, 1925. They were married for 63 years until his death on Dec. 2, 1988.

She was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta, and the Otego Chapter 377 Order of the Eastern Star.

Martha is survived by five nieces in the Oneonta area, Kathleen Pirone, Dawn Beers, Phyllis Roberts, Margaret Perry Young and Faith Kesel; also several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the graveside in Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The Rev. Stephen Heiss, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Martha's memory to the Oneonta Nursing Home, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

Arlene E. Loomis
 Johnson CITY — Miss Arlene Elizabeth Loomis, 83, a resident at the Hilltop Retirement Center,  Johnson City, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Oct. 22, 1999, at her residence.

She was born May 1, 1916, in Oxford. Arlene was the daughter of the late Ward and Edna Copley Loomis.

She was a 10-year resident of  Johnson City, and was formerly of Sidney and West Bainbridge.

Miss Loomis was a graduate of the Sidney High School Class of 1934. She attended New York State School of Home Economics, Canton, from 1934, until her graduation in 1936. She completed her internship with Deaconess Hospital, Buffalo, and Stamford Hospital, Stamford, Conn.

Miss Loomis was employed by Bergen County Hospital, Ridgewood, N.J., from 1937 until 1944. In 1944 until her retirement in 1972, Arlene was the chief dietitian for The Hospital, Sidney.

She was a member of the Union Valley United Methodist Church, West Bainbridge, Tri-Town Business and Professional Women, Sidney, and the local chapter of the DAR.

Arlene is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carlton and Millicent Loomis of Chenango Bridge and Graydon and Gloria Loomis of Pittsford; special friend, Jean Bassin of Harpursville; also several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at 1 p.m. from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Gary Doupe, pastor of the Chenango Street United Methodist Church, Binghamton, officiating.

Burial will follow in the West Bainbridge Cemetery, West Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. at the funeral chapel to 5 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Union Valley United Methodist Church, West Bainbridge or to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Richard Miller
LEXINGTON, Va. — Richard Miller of Lexington, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, in Lexington, Va.

He was born in New York City on Aug. 13, 1925, the son of the late Maurice and Irene Miller.

He was a graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi, N.Y., and received his undergraduate and master of Education from Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., in 1950.

He served as a bombardier-navigator in World War II.

He coached and taught physical education at Springfield College for two years before coming to  Washington and Lee University, where he also coached cross-country track, wrestling, taught physical ed. for 38 years and served as associate athletic director.

A member and elder of Lexington Presbyterian Church and Kerrs Creek Ruritan Club, he served his community in many ways and was a carpenter for several Habitat homes.

He was predeceased by his brother, John R. Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Harper Miller; daughters and sons-in-law, Lorie and Rodney Hughes of Ferrum, Va., Christie and Keith Nadolski of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Debbie Pollard of Centreville, Va.; grandchildren, Andrew and Adam Hughes of Ferrum, Va., Megan, Bethany and Lindsey Nadolski of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Kathleen and Susan Pollard of Centreville, Va.; sister-in-law, Mrs. John Miller of Delmar, N.Y.; two nieces; three nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be at Lexington Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at 2 p.m., with Dr. William Klein officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Rockbridge Chapter, 321 N. Main St., Lexington, Va., Lexington Presbyterian Church,  Washington and Lee University Athletic Department.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 30, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, Va.

Eva D. Corbin
SAUGERTIES — Eva D. Corbin, 89, of Old Route 32, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at the Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskill.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1910, in Saugerties, the daughter of the late Wallace and Sarah Finger Dederick.

She graduated from Cornell University in 1931, and Middlebury College as a language major in 1939.

She retired in 1965, as a school teacher in South Kortright, where she taught Language Arts, French and Latin. Returning to Saugerties in 1973, she was a member of the Quarryville Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Doris D. Finger of Saugerties; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, J. Kenneth Corbin; and one sister, Celia Woycik and two brothers, Forrest and Jansen Dederick.

Her funeral procession will form 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, thence to the Quarryville Methodist Church, where her funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Linda McEathron, pastor. Interment will follow in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford, at 12:30 p.m.

Friends will be received on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Saugerties.

Florence Dorland
NORTH HARPERSFIELD — Florence "Flo" F. Dorland, 83, of Kirkside in Roxbury and formerly of North Harpersfield, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Kirkside in Roxbury.

She was born Sept. 23, 1916, in New York City, the daughter of Joseph Maximillian and Florence (Schultz) Sauer.

She married Howard L. Dorland on Dec. 18, 1938, in Valley Stream. Howard died Oct. 17, 1997.

Flo was a longtime resident of North Harpersfield, where she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm for many years, and then converted the farm to Middlebrook Campgrounds.

Flo was a secretary/office manager for  Jefferson Central School, Stamford Medical Center and Delaware Mercantile for 20 years until her retirement in 1980.

She was a longtime member and past president of the Stamford Community Hospital Auxiliary and Skilled Nursing Facility Auxiliary. She was in charge of the hospital coffee shop for many years charting more than 13,000 volunteer hours. She was an honorary lifetime member of Stamford Hospital Society and Robinson Terrace Auxiliary.

In 1984, Flo and her husband were named citizens of the year by the Stamford Rotary Club for their volunteer service to the community. Flo was a former chairwoman for the town of Harpersfield Republican Party.

She was active in Catskill Players theater group for many years.

She was a member of the Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel, and was active in establishing the Lazy Eye clinic. Flo was a member of the Stamford Garden Club; a longtime active member of Colonel Harper Grange in Harpersfield, a member of the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens Club; and a member of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Florence is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Constance and Richard Herodes of Poughkeepsie and Lynn and Elton Cook of Charlton; five grandchildren, Richard, Howard and David Herodes, James Cook and Catherine Ogden; three great-grandsons, Alden, Richard and Logan; a sister and brother-in-law, Marcella and William McCabe of West  Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt, pastor of the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 and 9 p.m. on Thursday, which time the family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Flo's memory to either the Robinson Terrace Auxiliary, care of Audrey Dorosky, Harper Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 or to Kirkside of Roxbury, Inc., Main Street, Box 248, Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Dolores C. Egan
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Dolores C. Egan, 76, of Fernleigh Drive, Cooperstown, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 1999, at her home.

Mrs. Egan was born on Sept. 22, 1923, in Niagara Falls, a daughter or Edward M. and Loretto L. (O'Neill) Hogan.

She married Francis P. Egan on Dec. 28, 1945, in Niagara Falls.

Mrs. Egan received her education at Loretto Academy and Loretto College, both in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and completed her studies at the University of Toronto in 1945. From 1945 until 1955, she served as registrar and executive secretary for Veteran's Affairs at Niagara University. She was active in a variety of social and volunteer services in the Niagara Falls and the Buffalo areas.

While serving as president of the Gray Ladies' Auxiliary of the American Red Cross at the close of World War II, she organized the Gray Ladies' Chapter of the Fort Niagara Hospital. At that time the hospital was receiving the more seriously psychologically disabled veterans. For this she later received the Distinguished Service award from President Eisenhower.

In 1955, Mrs. Egan moved to the Buffalo area and until 1960, either taught school in Amherst, or offered counseling services at the Main Campus of the University of Buffalo. From 1960 to 1975, she was active in the State College Faculty Wives' Association and the Oneonta Women's Club. She and her husband, Frank, moved to Cooperstown in 1975.

Mrs. Egan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Frank of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are asked to join in the celebration of Mrs. Egan's life at a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in the Hogan family plot in Riverdale Cemetery's Gate of Heaven section in Lewiston.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy B. Every
DELHI — Dorothy B. Every, 95, of Delhi, formerly of Oneonta, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born July 2, 1904, in Shavertown, the daughter of John D. and Irene Elwood  Jackson Boyes.

Daughters, Jean and Grover Townsend of Delhi, with who she made her home; Dorothy (Dibly) and John Carline of Morgantown, W.Va.; and Margaret LaMonica of Lavonia, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren survive.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Every, in 1952; and five sisters.

Mrs. Every was a long-standing member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta; active in the Auxiliary of the Fox Memorial Nursing Home and served as a pink lady in the Fox Memorial Hospital.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church (Red Door) Oneonta or to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Ruth S. Brazie
SOUTH VALLEY — Ruth S. Brazie of South Valley passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

Arrangements are pending with the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley and a full obituary will appear at a later date.

Armenia Roberts
EDMESTON — Armenia Roberts, 79, of 24 Burdick Ave., Edmeston, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1920, in Fulton, the daughter of the late Clayton and Nellie Roberts.

She was predeceased by her brother, David Roberts of Oswego.

For the past 26 years Armenia had been a resident of the Edmeston area. She lived with Alta VanVranken for the last year. Before living with Alta she resided with Michelle Wust for almost 15 years.

She was an active member of the Edmeston Day Hab Program. She enjoyed a variety of craft activities and had many caring friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at 10:30 a.m. from the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jay Henderson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Burlington Flats Cemetery following the service.

Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. on Thursday until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are being handled by the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford.

Dorothy McAvoy
CLAYTON, N.C. — Dorothy Meyer McAvoy, 68, of 204 Sleepy Creek Dr., Clayton, N.C., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999.

A funeral Mass will be held at a later date. Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton, N.C.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Donald P. McAvoy of Clayton, N.C.; daughters, Stacy Gillow of Hampshire, England, and Deirdre McAvoy of Portsmouth, N.H.; sons, Brendan McAvoy of Belfast, Maine, and Kyle McAvoy of Ann Arbor, Mich.; mother, Ann Meyer of Sayville, N.Y.; sister, Bette Northrup of Weston, Conn.; brothers, John Meyer of Bay Shore, N.Y., and Robert Meyer of Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to: Brain Tumor Research Center at Duke, care of Dr. Henry Friedman, P.O. Box 3624, Durham, N.C. 27710.

Charles A. Travis
BEVERLY, Mass. — Graveside services for Charles A. Travis, 84, of Beverly, Mass., will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart, N.Y. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.

Charles A. Travis the husband of Vincie V. (Agrusso) Travis passed away Oct. 10, 1999, in Beverly Hospital, Beverly, Mass.

He was born in Gilboa, N.Y., the son of the late William and Julia (Hitchcock) Travis, he had been a resident of Beverly for most of his life.

A graduate in 1954, of the North Bennet Street Industrial School in Boston, he completed courses in watchmaking and repair. At one time, he was the proprietor of Charles A. Travis Jewelry Shop located on Union Street in Lynn. Most recently and before his retirement, he had been employed as a gyro technician by the Raytheon Corp. in its Lowell facility for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the United States Coast Guard and had been aboard many vessels during his three-year tour of duty, serving part of his enlistment on the Fiji Islands. He was discharged in February of 1946, attaining the rank of seaman first class.

Mr. Travis was a longtime friend of Bill W.

Surviving him in addition to his wife are two daughters, Charlene A. "Sam" Travis of Salem, Mass., and Caren A. Travis of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; a sister, Ina Nesbitt of Middleburgh, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Henry Travis, predeceased him.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, N.Y.

Marie M. Schwager
ONEONTA — Marie M. Schwager, 80, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Scranton, Pa., the daughter of Carl and Flossie (Grambs) Burleigh.

She married Frank J. Schwager on Dec. 15, 1945, in Newark, N.J.

Marie served with the United States Army during World War II, and attained the rank of staff sergeant at the time of discharge.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Marie was a devoted wife and mother, who especially enjoyed expressing herself through her artistic abilities. She also enjoyed gardening, and took great pride in her flower and vegetable garden.

Marie is survived by her husband, Frank J. Schwager of Oneonta; her children, Frank C. Schwager of Charleston, S.C., Jeanne M. Schwager and her husband, Ted Bosack, of North Providence, R.I., and Kathleen E. Schwager of Avon, Conn.; a sister, Anita Brownlow of Boulder,  Colo.; along with several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call this evening at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert E. Bell
DELHI — Robert E. Bell, 54, of Woburn, Mass., a Delhi native and former resident, died unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at his home in Massachusetts.

He was born April 14, 1945, in Delhi, the son of Ellsworth C. and Myrna C. (Ballantyne) Bell.

Bob grew up in Delhi and was a 1963 graduate of Delaware Academy, where he was active in sports. He received his master's degree from the University of Cincinnati ( Ohio).

A resident of the Boston area for the past 30 years, he taught art in area high schools there, and subsequently was a free-lance commercial artist in the Automotive Products Catalog Design of Trend-Lines in Boston.

Bob was also an automobile enthusiast and greatly enjoyed restoring vintage antique cars.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara B. Bell of New Bern, N.C.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Arvid Whitmore will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home and burial will follow in the family plot in the Hamden Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
