Henry Menke

BOVINA — Henry Menke, 87, a longtime Bovina resident, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday night, Feb. 14, 2000.

He was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Horpel, Germany, the son of Henry and Marie (Jobmann) Menke.

When he was a youth, he moved with his family to Brazil, later coming to the U.S. when a teen-ager.

He married Frieda Petsche on Oct. 2, 1952, in Delhi.

Henry owned and operated a dairy farm in Bovina more than 50 years until his retirement.

He was a founding member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi.

Henry enjoyed fishing, hunting and telling stories about his younger life in Brazil.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Frieda Menke at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Henry J. and Linda Menke of Delhi; a daughter and son-in-law, A. Marie and Eric Stroman of Hamden; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman Sr. and Elfriede Menke; a sister, Tillie Rabeler; and a brother-in-law, Leland Priscott, all of Delhi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Priscott, in 1969.

Friends are invited to call today (Wednesday) at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, by Pastor Rev. John E. Priest. Burial will be later in the Bovina Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Bovina Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

John Mewhorter Sr.

COOPERSTOWN — John E. Mewhorter Sr., 60, of Cooperstown, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at his home.

Jack was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Oneonta, a son of Robert and Mary (Brooks) Mewhorter.

Jack graduated from Sidney High School after which he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Lora Nichols in Oneonta on April 12, 1959. She predeceased him Sept. 25, 1988,

Jack worked for the state Department of Environmental Conservation until his retirement.

He has resided in the Cooperstown and Milford area for the past 30-plus years.

Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan.

He was a member of the Walter P. Eggleston Post #7128 VFW and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post #579.

Jack is survived by two sons, John E. Mewhorter Jr. and Daniel Mewhorter of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and John Peterson of Newton, Kan.; three granddaughters, Jessica and Rebecca Carpenter of Virginia, and Laura Peterson of Newton, Kan.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Linda Mewhorter of Orange City, Fla., and Ralph and Dawn Mewhorter of Unadilla; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Marjorie Christensen of Coal Dale Alberta, Canada, Delores and Marshall Dubois of Phenix City, Ala., Evelyn and Gordon Chesley of Orange City, Fla., and Mary and Anson Knapp of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Feb. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance. The family will also be receiving family and friends at a gathering at Knott's Motel in Goodyear Lake on Thursday evening, Feb. 17, 2000, starting at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association at 120 Lomond Court, Utica, N.Y. 13502 or to the American Cancer Society (Oneonta office) at 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Maurice Wikoff

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Maurice Wikoff, 77, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born June 27, 1922, in Cherry Valley, the son of Maynard and Cecil (Snyder) Wikoff.

On June 30, 1945, he married Cora Mumford.

He was a graduate of Cherry Valley School, a World War II veteran serving in the United States Air Force in North Africa and worked for Cooperstown Elementary School in maintenance and as a crossing guard, retiring several years ago after many years of service. He worked for Earl Chase and Sons and the First Baptist Church, Cooperstown, for many years.

Mr. Wikoff was a member for many years of the Doubleday Dancers. He loved his garden and took great pleasure in it.

Mr. Wikoff is survived by his former wife, Cora Wikoff; three daughters, Donna Bailey of Cooperstown, Dawn Wikoff of Mount Claire,  Calif., and Lori and her husband, Pasquale Vitacore, of Clyde; three sons and their wives, Terry and Paula Wikoff of Cooperstown, Mark and Delsia Wikoff of St. Louis, Mo., and Kim and Tammy Wikoff of Hartwick; grandchildren, Anna, Gretchen, Joshua, Chery, Sarai, Tulsa, Hannah, Kyle, Mica, Joseph, Shane and Matthew; and great-granddaughter, Cheyenne; a sister and brother-in-law, Natalie and Orville Countryman of Canajoharie; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Cora Wikoff; and a brother, Dean Wikoff, all of Cherry Valley.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Audrey Hendricks.

A remembrance service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Doug Deer officiating. Spring burial will take place in Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Cremation will take place in the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley.

There will be no public calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Wikoff's memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, Cooperstown.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley; 264-8141.

Henry W. Carman

DELANCEY — Henry William (Bill) Carman, 58, of RD1 Box 49, Cabin Hill Road, DeLancey, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at his home.

Bill was born on Dunk Hill in Walton, to Isaac Homer and Minnie (Alberts) Carman on Jan. 12, 1942.

Bill graduated from Downsville Central School in June of 1942 and was FFA president.

He formerly owned a farm and a cash cropping business in Dutchess County and also worked for the town of Walton and the town of Delhi as a mechanic.

He was known for his smoked venison, kind-heartedness and his helpfulness to his many friends.

Bill leaves his wife of 38 years, Doris (Mericle) Carman; and their three sons and daughters-in-law, Walt and Nancy Carman of Prattsville, Glenn and Tammy Carman of Lexington and Rodney and Peggy Carman of Walton; seven grandchildren: five granddaughters, Jessica, Ashley, Brittney, Hannah and Rachel and two grandsons, William and Lil' Walt; his mother, Minnie Carman of Pine Plains; three sisters, Bessie Carman of California, Catherine Jenson of Buffalo, Wyo., and JoAnn Chappell of Wassaic; four brothers, Donald Carman of Greene, Clarence Carman of Dover Plains, Richard Carman of Pine Plains and Thomas Carman of Pine Plains; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his father, Isaac; and a brother, David.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Bert More, a close family friend, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service.

John A. Barrett

NORTH HARPERSFIELD — John A. "Jack" Barrett of North Harpersfield, and formerly of New Windsor, a retired engineer for the New York City Board of Education for 37 years, entered into rest Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at home. He was 64.

Survived by his wife, Doris M. Andersen Barrett. He is the son of Anne Barrett and the late William Barrett. He was born June 8, 1935, in Brooklyn.

Jack served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a former member of Gerritsen Beach Fire Department, an exempt member of Vails Gate Fire Department, served as a former commissioner for Vails Gate Fire District, and a was a member of Colonel Harper Grange.

Survivors include his wife, Doris M. Anderson Barrett at home; two sons, Christopher J. Barrett of Newburgh and Jeffrey J. Barrett of New Windsor; one daughter, Diana L. Reynolds of Tennessee; his mother, Anne Barrett of  Washingtonville; one brother, William Barrett of Albrightville, Pa.; two sisters, Betty Preuss of New Windsor and Pat Corr of Bonita Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren, April Barrett, David Lawless, Kristen Reynolds, Briana Barrett and Danyelle Barrett; one great-grandchild, Rayna Barrett; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, William Barrett of  Washingtonville.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at DiDonato-Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, in St. Francis Church, Newburgh, with the Rev. Owen Mercer officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor.

Arrangements are under the direction of DiDonato-Brooks Funeral Home, Newburgh.

Kurt P. McClain

BAINBRIDGE — Kurt Patrick McClain, 8, of Bainbridge died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Jan. 20, 1992, to Kevin and Lorraine McDonald McClain in Sidney.

Kurt was in the second grade at Greenlawn Elementary School, Bainbridge. He also played in the Afton Soccer League.

He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Lorraine McClain; brother, Kevin Michael McClain; sister, Kelly Megan McClain; maternal grandparents, John and Betty McDonald; paternal grandparents, Meredith and Mollie McClain; paternal great-grandmother, Ilyne Neshien; aunt Michelle McDonald; aunt and uncle, Mary and Jay Gill and their son, Eric; uncle and aunt, John and Jeanine McDonald and their children, Steve and Nicole; uncle Ken Rondeau and his children, Lindsay and Katie; uncle Brian McClain; and several other family and friends.

Kurt was also predeceased by an aunt, Peggy Rondeau.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Wood, pastor of the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Kurt's name to the West Bainbridge Baptist Church, care of Pastor David Wood or the Upstate Home for Children, 2705 State Highway 28, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Louise J. Nolan

UNADILLA — Louise J. Nolan, 67, of Unadilla, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Dec. 11, 1932, in West Suffield, Conn., the daughter of Irving and Lila (Nash) Bonesteel.

She was married to Ronald L. Nolan on Sept. 29, 1956, in West Suffield, Conn.

Mrs. Nolan is survived by her husband, Ronald L. Nolan Sr. of Unadilla; two sons and daughters-in-law, Art and Joann Hull of Atlanta, Ga., and Ronald Jr. and Janie Nolan of Sidney Center; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lorrie and Marv Oakley of Burlington Flats, Lisa and Rick Schmitz of Franklin and Linda and Kevin Debiew of Otego; a sister, Ivis Thayer of East Hartford, Conn.; four brothers, Robert Hussex of Windsorlocks, Conn., Claude Bonesteel of Vernon, Conn., Irving Bonesteel Jr. of Hguwam, Mass., and William Bonesteel of Bainbridge; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, from 1 p.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

George Harmuth

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — George Harmuth, 74, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at St. Lucie Medical Center.

George was born Feb. 22, 1925, son of the late Fred and Ellen Harmuth of West Burlington.

He married Ann O'Connor in Cortland in June 1955.

Before retirement, he was an engineer with I.B.M of Fishkill for 30 years.

He lived in Port St. Lucie the past 12 years and was a member of the Port St. Lucie Yacht Club, Anglers Club and Loyal Order of the Moose.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Harmuth of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two sons, George Michael Harmuth of Poughkeepsie and John Harmuth of Pleasant Valley; two daughters, Ellen Sopchak of Rhinebeck and Susan Straszewski of Port St. Lucie; a sister and brother-in-law, Juliana and Orlo Benjamin of West Burlington; and nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, and four brothers, Frank, Philip, Robert and William Harmuth.

Funeral services were held Feb. 3, 2000, at Aycock Funeral Home, Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Memorial services will be at a later date in Wappingers Falls.

Charles Carrigan Jr.

ONEONTA — Charles Carrigan Jr., 72, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 6, 1927, in New York City, the son of Charles and Gertrude (Clark) Carrigan Sr.

He was never married.

Mr. Carrigan was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy Submarine service.

He was a self-employed TV and radio repairman after coming to Oneonta in 1978. He previously owned and operated a TV repair shop in Boston and had also been employed by Abott Laboratories.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Oneonta American Legion.

Charles is survived by several cousins including Jane Conklin and Geraldine Holcomb, both of Oneonta.

A graveside service will be held later in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Joan M. Rossley

BOVINA CENTER — Joan M. Rossley, 68, of Bovina Center, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

The daughter of Harold and Ruth (Gibbs) Fynaut, she was born May 15, 1931, in Lyons, where she grew up, and married Edward F. Rossley on March 22, 1947.

Since her husband's military retirement, the Rossleys have been Bovina Center residents for the past 30 years.

Joan was employed for 25 years as a teacher's aide at Delaware Academy, Delhi.

As an only child, her fondness of children and the special attention she gave to them enhanced her work both in school and home-life.

She was an active parishioner and sang in the choir at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.

Joan will also be remembered (with humor) for her avid attraction to and participation in Bingo games.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Edward F. Rossley; two sons and their wives, Joseph and Caroline Rossley of Marinette, Wis., and Edward T. and Gretchen Rossley of Bovina Center; three daughters and their husbands, Cynthia and Randal Hill of Ellisville, Miss., and Honora and Byron Trimbell and Roberta and Robert Burgin, all of Bovina Center; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two cousins, Robert and William Yorkey.

She was predeceased in 1976, by a grandson, Mark Rossley.

Friends are invited to call today (Thursday) at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance 6 to 9 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 18, at St. Peter's Church, with the Rev. Edward J. Ryan presiding.

Final commendation and burial will be later in the Bovina Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bovina Emergency Squad or the American Diabetes Association, 7  Washington Square, Albany, N.Y. 12205.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
