Roland E. Gunther

NEW BERLIN — Roland E. Gunther, 86, of New Berlin, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in Oxford.

He was born June 1, 1913, in Mexico City, Mexico, the son of Erich and Adelheid (Schemel) Gunther.

He married Jane Bischoff on July 2, 1960, who survives him.

He spent his childhood in Long Island. He was a graduate of Columbia College and the Weistephan Brewers College in Freising, Germany.

He was a flavor chemist for Norwich Pharmaceutical Co.

He was a member of the Mensa Society, member of the Flavor Society, past president of the New Berlin Rotary and served in the United States Army from 1942-1945 during World War II.

Roland is survived by one son, Eric J. Gunther of CotadeCaza,  Calif.; one grandson, Grant M. Gunther; three sisters, Gertrude Gunther of Onancock, Va., Grace Petersen of Oceanside and Ellen Gunther of New Berlin; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Robin T. Gunther in 1990.

Memorial donations may be made to the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford, N.Y. or Dollars for Scholars local chapter, New Berlin, N.Y.

Orrest Karlson Sr.

NORWICH — Orrest C. Karlson Sr., 77, of Wells Road, Norwich, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2000, at his home.

Born in Norwich, Orrest grew up in Binghamton and attended North High School there, a graduate of the Class of 1940.

For a short time after graduation, he worked in the Port Crane area, driving a coal truck.

In January of 1943, Orrest entered the military, serving his country during World War II until his honorable discharge in April 1946. During his service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military duty, Orrest returned to the Binghamton area and his previous employment, while also working for the E.J. Co.

He subsequently moved to Oxford; and, in 1951, made the move to the Wells Road, where he built the home he and his family would live in for many years and where he would reside until the time of his death. During this time, he worked for 35 years as a machinist for Scintilla of Sidney.

Truly interested in and devoted to local veteran's affairs, Orrest was a life member of V.F.W. Post #2782, a member of their board of directors, and a past commander of that post. He was always very active in the running of the bingo games at the V.F.W. Through the V.F.W., he was instrumental in obtaining and placing the Vietnam-Korea Memorial in East Side Park in downtown Norwich; and was the person who instituted the Veterans Day Savings Bond program given by the V.F.W. to the first baby born at Chenango Memorial Hospital on Veterans Day. In addition, Orrest was a member of American Legion Post #189 of Norwich.

Orrest was actively involved in the Norwich Quarter Cemetery where many of his family members are buried. He was a member of that cemetery association, and also a member of their board of directors. In addition, Orrest served the town of Norwich as a tax assessor.

Born Dec. 16, 1922, in Norwich, Orrest was the son of Raymond and Freda (Herrick) Karlson.

On Aug. 8, 1946, in Oxford, he married Ida Davern, who passed away June 30, 1979. Orrest and Ida, at the time of her death, had been married for 33 years.

Orrest is survived by his children and their spouses, Orrest and Rosemary Karlson of Norwich, Marilyn and Robert Neuland of Norwich and Maureen and John Nevins of Newcomb, Md.; three sisters, Janet Williams of Canton, Sheila Holmes of Greene and Evelyn Lindsay of Bakersfield,  Calif.; and by two brothers, Burton David Potter of Christiansburg, Va., and James Potter of Tucson, Ariz. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, John Nevins, Scott Nevins, Alyson Nevins, William Karlson, Alan Karlson, Diane Neuland, Elizabeth Neuland and Kyle Neuland; two great-grandchildren,  Taylor and Elizabeth Karlson; his stepfather, Robert Kalicicki of Oxford; his aunt, Mable  Johnson of Norwich; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Orrest will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lynn Ash, interim pastor of the Christ Lutheran Church of Norwich, officiating. Interment with full military rites will be held at a later date in the Norwich Quarter Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. On Friday, at 7:15 p.m., members of the V.F.W. Post #2782, and American Legion Post #189 will call in a group at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chenango County Hospice, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, 13815.

Marta Nerzak

DELAND, Fla. — Marta D. Nerzak, 74, of Brooks Avenue, a resident since 1994, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital-West Volusia, DeLand, Fla.

Mrs. Nerzak, a homemaker, was born in Kirchardt, Germany, and moved here from Unadilla, N.Y.

She was a member of Plymouth Avenue Christian Church.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, ceramics, reading and baking.

Survivors include two sons, Peter of Maryville, Tenn., and Harold of Otego, N.Y.; a daughter, Ute Hartshorn of DeLand, Fla.; two brothers, Walter Voll of Kirchardt, Germany, and Albert Voll of Freiburg, Germany; two sisters, Elizabeth Fisher of Bookingen, Germany, and Lidja Winkler of Heilbronn, Germany; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ethel Jester

DELHI — Ethel Ogborn Jester, 78, of Delhi, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Roscoe Community Nursing Home, Roscoe.

She was born April 4, 1921, one of 17 children of Arthur and Leah (Wylie) Ogborn in the town of Meredith.

April 11, 1939, she married the late Leland A. Jester; he died July 13, 1991.

Mrs. Jester was a lifetime town of Meredith resident and graduated from A.L. Kellogg Central School.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved the outdoors and caring for her gardens.

A daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Donald Kueneman of Tucson, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Josefina Jester of Tucson, Ariz.; son and his fiancee, William Jester and Betsy Kinch of Meridale; six grandchildren, James Kueneman, Diana Hofsdal, William B. Jester, Mary Ann Bond and Mickey Jester, all of Tucson, Ariz., and William J. Jester of Meridale; and seven great-grandchildren survive, as do four sisters, Isabelle McIntyre of Delhi, Gavena Elderkin of Oneonta, Betty Rockefeller of Bloomville Ruth Parker of Delaware; and three brothers, David, Charles and George Ogborn, all of Franklin.

Three sisters, Mabel Hughes, Janet Hall and Jessie Seward; and six brothers, Ronald, Raymond, Arthur, Howard, William and Robert Ogborn, predeceased her.

The funeral services will take place on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with Charles Cook officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home before the service from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial in the spring will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the "In Touch" Dementia Program at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home, 420 Rockland Rd., Roscoe, N.Y. 12776.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Ivan R. Woods

AFTON — Ivan R. Woods, 60, of Afton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 5, 1939, to the late Lester David and Gertrude Mae Hinman  Woods in Oxford.

Ivan married Janet S. Becker on June 7, 1958, in the Methodist Church in Guilford. After 41 years of marriage, Janet predeceased him on Sept. 3, 1999.

Woody was employed by the state Department of Transportation for 38 years before retiring.

He enjoyed camping, traveling, bluegrass music and visiting over diner coffee.

Ivan is survived by his son, Bentley  Woods of Afton; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Mark Liebermann of Unadilla; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Donna  Woods of Bainbridge; sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Hazel Newman of Travellers Rest, S.C.; three grandchildren, Cody Dillon Woods, Theresa Anne  Woods and Michael Gerard Liebermann; several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Randy Eliason, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Sidney, officiating. Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Afton in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

William E. Coager

GRAND GORGE — William "Pete" E. Coager, 80, of Grand Gorge, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born May 4, 1919, in  Johnson Hollow, town of Roxbury, the son of Frederick Coager and Nellie Chase.

He married Bertha Mackey in the United Methodist Church on June 26, 1949, in Grand Gorge.

He was a farmer in  Johnson Hollow, then he became a well-known cattle dealer in the area. He was a lifelong area resident.

William is survived by his wife, Bertha Coager of Grand Gorge; one son, Edward T. Coager of Grand Gorge; one daughter, Nancy Ann Coager of Stamford; one sister, Nellie Thorington of Grand Gorge; and two brothers, Fred Coager Jr. of Bloomville and Herbert Coager of Hobart. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Robert Nash officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions may be made to a favorite charity of one's choice in memory of Pete Coager.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Hannah Rose Davis

EDMESTON — Hannah Rose Davis, of Edmeston, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Feb. 15, 2000, the infant daughter of John J. and Shaundra M. (Kupris) Davis.

She is survived by her parents, John and Shaundra; sister, Gwendolyn; and brother, John Jr.; her grandparents, Claude and Eva Davis and Louis and Rosalind Kupris; her aunts and uncles, Dale and Sharon Davis, Rocky Davis, Claude and Victoria Davis, Clarence and Kathy Davis, Martin and Diana Mettler; and 16 cousins.

She was predeceased by her aunt, Camille Rose Kupris.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with Fr. Francis Case and the Rev. Beverly Butler officiating. Calling hours are Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, from noon until the service at 1:30 p.m.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Margaret P. Hoffay

KINGSTON — Margaret P. Hoffay, 90, a lifetime resident of Kingston, and widow of Grover S. Hoffay, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at The Golden Hill Health Care Center, Kingston.

The daughter of Flotion and Leocadia Bechtold. She was born in Connelly on April 17, 1909.

Surviving are two daughters, Loretta McCarthy of Goshen and Margaret Branigan of Delhi; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral will be held from the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 27 Smith Ave., on Saturday at 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph's Church at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Wiltwyck Cemetery. Friends and family members will be received at the funeral home on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers may be made in the form of contributions to Hospice of Ulster County, 34 Broadway, Kingston, N.Y. 12401.

Mildred M. Bull

ONEONTA — Mildred Margaret Bull, 96, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Mildred, the daughter of Rozelle and Iva Alvord Stephens, was born in the township of Frankfort on Dec. 2, 1903.

Education was given high priority by the Stephens family and after attending the one-room schoolhouse near their home, she and her younger sister Florence (Telfer) left their rural home to board in Frankfort so that they could attend high school.

After they graduated from Frankfort High School in 1921, they both attended teacher-training classes and at the age of 18 began to teach in the county school.

Their jobs eventually led them to the town of Burlington, where Mildred married a farmer, Leo W. Bull, on Aug. 18, 1925. In 1929, they purchased the General Store in Burlington (Green), where they sold general merchandise to the surrounding community and participated in the activities of the Burlington Baptist Church and the Grange.

After leaving the store, Mildred continued her education by taking classes at Oneonta State Teachers College. During the 1965-66 school year, she matriculated full time. After receiving her degree in 1966, 41 years after attending teacher-training classes at Oneonta Normal School, the proud graduate taught second grade at New Berlin Central School until the age of 70.

Throughout her life she has been an active member of several organizations: Burlington Flats Home Bureau (Friendly Neighbors), 4-H Club, AARP, AAUW, DAR, Lang Baracca Class of the Oneonta First Baptist Church, Retired Teachers Associations of Otsego and Chenango Counties and the Historical Society of the town of Burlington. As a member of the Burlington Bicentennial Committee, she was a co-author of its 1972 publication "Burlington: Then and Now."

Mildred has left a legacy of diaries, photos and writings that tell of the full life she led as wife, mother, grandmother, community leader, teacher and friend. They tell of her pride in her family, teachers, students, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her five children: Elaine Iasparro of Pasadena,  Calif., Carma Stone of Covina,  Calif., Ara (Donald) Riedel of Ashdown, Ark., Keith (Marjorie) Bull of Oneonta and Theo Lynne Bull, with whom she made her home in Oneonta for many years; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Gordon Hull of Edmeston.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leo Bull; grandchildren, Brian Keith Bull and Andrea Jean Zimmerman; beloved sons-in-law George Zimmerman, Dominick Iasparro and Elmer Stone; and special nursing home roommate, Cora Lewis.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Burlington Green Baptist Church or First Baptist Church of Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Clarence H. Becker

SIDNEY — Clarence H. "Red" Becker, 84, of Sidney, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 18, at the Nursing Care Facility, Sidney.

He was born to the late Maxwell J. and Florence (Linderman) Becker on Sept. 1, 1915, in Carbondale, Pa.

Red married Leona L. Henkiel on Aug. 29, 1942, in Binghamton. She predeceased him on May 12, 1991.

He served his country in the U.S. Army and the merchant marines.

Red was employed by ECD of Bendix, Sidney, as a lathe operator. He retired in 1981. He was a member of Phelps Hose Co. No. 1 of the Sidney Fire Department for 53 years and was a past captain of the fire police. Red was a member of the Lodge of the Elks, Sidney, and the Loyal Order of Moose, Sidney.

He was an avid bowler, belonging to the Nighthawks Bowling League.

Red enjoyed boating and water-skiing in his day, along with hunting and fishing.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline A. and Paul Bargher of Sidney; a son, Ronald W. Becker of Fort Worth,  Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Betty Becker of Clayton; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Richard Lang of Ventura,  Calif.; four grandchildren, Craig Bargher of Chicago, Brenda Bargher of Sidney, Daniel Becker of Granbury,  Texas, and Clarissa Keeling of Aledo,  Texas; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. The Sidney Fire Department will hold a fireman's Service at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Rev. Joseph Schuck of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Friends may call Monday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., before the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main Street, Sidney, or the Sidney Fire Department.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Martha M. Heath

MARYLAND — Martha M. "Marty" Heath, 68, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 30, 1931, in Union, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Brigs) Wall.

She was predeceased by her husband, David Stanley Heath Sr., who died in 1988.

Marty was a route driver for The Daily Star and had also worked for Astrocom for 17 years. She was a member of the Catskill Transmitter Radio Club of Schenevus.

She was an avid bowler at Holiday Lanes for a number of years. Marty had a passion for horses and had owned some at one time.

Marty is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Miriam Heath of Middlebury, Ind., Raymond G. and Betty Heath of Elkhart, Ind., David S. Heath Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Stewart L. Heath of Elkhart, Ind.; and one stepson and daughter-in-law, Stanley M. and Pat Heath of Bloomsburg, Pa. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a dear friend, Kenneth Ruling of Maryland.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

The Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, will officiate.

Marty will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris, following services.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, from 7-9 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905 in memory of Martha "Marty" Heath.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
