Charlotte Bernhardt

MILFORD — Charlotte Bernhardt, 76, died unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Aug. 23, 1923, at home in Suffern, the daughter of Holbert A. and Emma J. (Maxwell) Terhune.

Mrs. Bernhardt was a nursing assistant at The Meadows in Middlefield, retiring on June 5, 1987.

Mrs. Bernhardt was a past member and an EMT at the Hartwick Fire Department and Emergency Squad and Milford Emergency Squad.

Mrs. Bernhardt is survived by her son, Gerald Bernhardt of Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters, Lynette Lewis of Milford and Linda Himes and her friend, Charlie Martin of Worcester; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Holbert "Chic"' Terhune of DeLand, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy V. Curtis of Leonardsville; an uncle, Malcohm Terhune of Fairlawn; an aunt, Estelle Maxwell of Suffern; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and a special friend, Blanche Ward of Hartwick; and her beloved dogs.

Calling hours will be held from 5 p.m. to the funeral service time at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Douglas Burleigh, chaplain at Bassett Healthcare, officiating.

Burial will take place at the Hartwick Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Bernhardt to the Hartwick Fire Department and Emergency Squad, the Milford Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Anthony Vertucci

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Anthony F. Vertucci, 85, of Woodside Avenue, died peacefully on Friday evening, Feb. 25, 2000, in The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born on June 21, 1914, in Richfield Springs, son of the late C. Antonio and Elizabeth Famulare Vertucci.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

On June 6, 1936, he married Anna Burke in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. They had a loving and devoted union of 45 years until her passing on April 27, 1981.

For 33 years Tony worked for Suburban Propane, retiring as regional manager in 1979.

On May 22, 1982, he married Helen VanValkenburg Pratt in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.

His leisure time was spent hunting, fishing and gardening.

A member of St. Joseph's Church, he loved his community and was active in community life. He served as a village trustee in the 1950s and was elected mayor in the mid 1960s. He was a member of the Richfield Springs Rotary Club, Richfield Springs Historical Association and Richfield Springs Chamber of Commerce. Tony had been a board member of the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association, where he served on the committee for water testing. He was involved with the bandstand reconstruction in the park and the erection of the sign for entering Richfield Springs coming from Springfield Center. Both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richfield Springs Chamber of Commerce honored him with awards for his community service.

Surviving him besides his wife, Helen, are two sons and their wives, Anthony Jr. and Jean Vertucci of Baldwinsville and Lawrence and Frances Vertucci of Syracuse; two daughters and their husbands, Anne and John Reilly of Ossining and MaryEllen and Alfred Edwards of Carmel; a stepson, Kenneth Pratt and his wife, Barbara of Spencerport; a stepdaughter, Beverly Pratt Strather of Avon; two brothers, Frederick Vertucci of Richfield Springs and James Vertucci of Stone Ridge; five sisters, Grace Avery of New Hartford, Margaret Lasher of Weaverville, N.C., Rose Edick, Theresa Vertucci and Anna Edick, all of Richfield Springs; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Vertucci, and two sisters, Mary Brown and Elizabeth Lyon.

Funeral services will be held from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Richfield Springs will take place later this spring. The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

In the 1970s, Mr. Vertucci and his siblings established a fund that provides an annual scholarship to a graduating senior at Richfield Springs Central School. This award is presented in memory of their parents. Memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Adelaide Holley

WALTON — Adelaide (Johnson) Holley, 86, a 60-year resident of 5 Ogden St., Walton, died Sunday morning, Feb. 27, 2000, at Wilson Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1913, to Mary Ione Wolcott Dudley and stepfather Arthur Dudley in Oneonta.

She married Hilton B. Holley in 1938, in Oneonta. He predeceased her on Feb. 11, 1991. She was also predeceased by a son, Dr. Robert G. Holley, on July 12, 1978, and a brother, Ernest Johnson.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Walton, the United Methodist Women, a Communion steward, active with the Church Greeter's Group and active in Brother's Keepers Quilts for the homeless. She was a member and past matron of the Eastern Star in Walton and a member of the Walton Knitting Club and D.V.H. Auxiliary. She was a retired employee of the Walton Central School District.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Rebecca Holley of Unadilla; a daughter-in-law, Melissa Holley of Burlington, Vt.; four grandchildren, Marie Holley, Todd Holley, Scott Holley and Martha Holley Newsome; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Walton, 101 North St., with the Rev. L. Lawrence Dunlap, pastor of her church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, on Tuesday evening, Feb. 29, 2000, from 7 to 9.

Paul Ritchko

ONEONTA — Paul Ritchko, 86, of Oneonta died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Fox Hospital Nursing Home, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Oneonta, the son of Peter and Mary (Suchniak) Ritchko.

Mr. Ritchko was never married.

Mr. Ritchko graduated from Oneonta High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a lifelong area resident, and along with other family members owned and operated Ritchko's Market on West Broadway in Oneonta until his retirement several years ago.

Mr. Ritchko is survived by one brother, Arthur and his wife, Sue Ann Ritchko of Glenmont; and a sister, Katherine Ritchko of The Meadows; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Harry (Pete), Fred, and James Ritchko.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Canon Mark Cole, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call after 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2000. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

George O. Tyler

WESTFORD — George O. Tyler, 85, of Westford, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at The Meadows in Middlefield, where he had been a resident.

He was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Westford, the son of Lyman and Edna B. (Parker) Tyler.

Mr. Tyler attended the Westford School and worked on the family dairy farm. He was a member of the Westford Methodist Church, where he was the custodian for many years. He also maintained the Westford Cemetery for many years. He enjoyed taxidermy and photography.

He is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Christine Stah-Mann of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. Nadine (Stah)  White of Oxon, England; one great-nephew; and a cousin, Madaline Eckstein of Florida and  Pennsylvania.

He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Stah, and a cousin, Harold Tyler.

Calling hours will be held from 6 p.m. until the funeral service at 7 p.m. today at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester with the Rev. Richard H. Burke, pastor at the Westford and Schenevus Methodist churches, officiating.

Burial will be at the Westford Cemetery later in the spring.

Contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Tyler to the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Westford, N.Y. 13488.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Myrtle Schrumpf

JEFFERSON — Myrtle Irene Schrumpf, 94, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000.

Next to the youngest child, she was born on April 14, 1905, to William and Katherine Walker in Germantown, Pa.

As a young lady she met Foster Schrumpf, who introduced her to a Gospel Preaching Church, where she accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior.

Myrtle and Foster were married in 1924, and moved to  Jefferson in May of 1948, where they and their son, Howard, purchased a farm in North Harpersfield.

Myrtle, beloved wife, mother and grandmother is survived by: one son, Howard Foster Schrumpf of North Harpersfield; three grandchildren, George Schrumpf of Rochester, Minn., Susan Palmer of Norwich, and Colleen Liddle of Hueytown, Ala.; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Olga Mowers of Kissimmee, Fla.; and nephews, nieces and cousins.

She will be remembered as beloved neighbor and friend by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Charlotteville at the First Summit Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Deugan officiating.

There will be no calling hours. Interment will be at the West  Jefferson Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Sandra J. Fuegmann

ESPERANCE — Additional survivors of Sandra Jean Fuegmann, 56, of Esperance, who died Saturday, Feb. 19, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, include two sisters, Ruth Schulz of North Franklin and Dorothy Oakley of Hobart; a brother, Ellis  White of Davenport; a stepsister, Ella Strattis of Philadelphia, Pa.; a stepbrother, Ellis Guile of North Blenheim; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Louisa Matthiasdottir

DELHI — Louisa Matthiasdottir, 83, of Delhi died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, on Feb. 20, 1917, the daughter of Matthias and Ellen (Johannesen) Einarsson.

She married the late Leland Bell in November 1944. He passed away on Sept. 18, 1991.

Louisa was an artist by profession, moving to the United States in 1943, and to Delhi in 1999, to make her home with her family.

Survivors are a daughter, Temma Bell and son-in-law, Ingimundur Kjarval; and four granddaughters; Ulla I. Kjarval, Melkorka I. Kjarval, Nina Soley I. Kjarval, and Vala I. Kjarval, all of Delhi.

There will be no services at this time and burial will be at the convenience of the family in Iceland.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Claudine Rosa

MARGARETVILLE — Claudine Rosa, 83, of Orchard Street, Margaretville, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born Dec. 27, 1916, in Arkville, the daughter of William James York and Lulu Halcott.

She married Ivan G. Rosa on Nov. 21, 1964, in Delhi.

She assisted families in the area cleaning homes and for 20 years worked at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville. She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, Margaretville. She enjoyed camping.

Claudine is survived by her husband, Ivan G. Rosa of Margaretville; daughter, Mrs. Charles (Sandy) Shultis of Margaretville; one brother, William L. York of Oneonta; one sister, Pauline Wallace of Dyersburg, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Margaretville Cemetery at a later date. Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

George Van Coss

CENTRAL BRIDGE — George Van Coss, 65, of Main Street, Central Bridge, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.

He was born June 9, 1934, to Clarence and Eveline Coss in Andes.

He served three years in the United States Army and worked many years as a sawmill worker at J&J Lumber in Dover Plains and then later worked at Century Brass in Connecticut.

Many of his friends knew him as "Coon Man" because he was an active hunter and often raised raccoon as pets. He also loved to fish and hunt ginseng.

George is predeceased by his father, Clarence, in June 1983; his mother, Eveline, in October 1997; and a sister, Minnie Rowe in 1992.

George is survived by his brothers and sisters, William and Maria Coss of Manhattan, Kan., Carrie Moore of Laurens, Morris Rowe of Laurens, Albert and Doris Coss of Kelly Corners, Polly and Howard Oliver of Treadwell and Clarence Coss Jr. of Laurens. George is also survived by his four children, David Coss and wife, Cindy, of Hamden, Daniel Coss of Wells Bridge, Polly Proctor and husband, Ronald, of Richmondville, and Penny Bishop and husband, Steve, of Delhi. George has 16 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

Arrangements are being made by the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Main Street, Andes. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 2, 2000, from 1 to 2 p.m., with funeral services at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in the old Andes Cemetery.

Leon S. Mitchell

WALTON — Leon S. Mitchell, 50, of 304 Delaware St., Walton, died unexpectedly Monday morning, Feb. 28, 2000, at Delaware Valley Hospital.

He was born in Oakland, Maine, on April 20, 1949, to Francis and Gladys Mitchell, who preceded him in death.

He married the former Tammy Swartwout on April 18, 1998, in Walton, who survives at home.

He was a graduate of Windfall High School in Maine and was a three-year term Navy veteran of Vietnam.

Besides his wife, Tammy, he is survived by a daughter, Crystal Starrett of N. Vassalboro, Maine; a stepdaughter, Jody McGonigle at home; five sisters, Diane Paul of Kennebunk, Maine, Sharon Nichols of N. Vassalboro, Maine, Carol Goodale of Waterville, Maine, Lynn Dakins of New Hampshire and Lisa Mitchell of Arizona; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Paul Cronin, pastor of First Congregational Church, Walton, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday morning, March 2, from 10 to 11 before the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, 102 Delaware St., Walton; 865-5114.

Katherine Lasher

ROXBURY — Katherine Ada Lasher, 99, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the Kirkside Adult Home, Roxbury.

She was born Dec. 15, 1900, in Manorkill, the daughter of Frank Richtmeyer and Ada Spaulding.

She married William H. Lasher Jr. on June 24, 1925, in Roxbury. He died in 1953.

She was a school teacher in days of the one-room schools for more than 40 years. She graduated from Stamford Seminary and Union School in 1920.

She has been a resident of Kirkside Adult Home for several years. In prior years she lived at Stone Ridge and Stamford.

She was a member of the former Manorkill Methodist Church.

Katherine is survived by one sister, Esther Tompkins of Gilboa; sister-in-law, Rosemary Richtmeyer of Gilboa; and nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral services will be held at a later date, and a graveside service will be held at Manorkill Cemetery, Manorkill.
