WEST LAURENS — Linda C. Fraser, 41, of West Laurens, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in Richmond, Va.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Charles J. Hamwey
ONEONTA — Memorial services for Charles J. Hamwey, 92, who passed away on Jan. 20, 2000, will be held today, April 28, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
Ida Alice Haney
FRANKLIN — Ida Alice Haney, 92, of Franklin, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi.
Ida was the first girl born to homesteaders Ola and Elda (Conrow) Greaser in Obar, N.M., on Sept. 13, 1907. She was the third of 11 siblings, with only three remaining, Spencer of Georgia, and Lenora and Willie of New Mexico.
She married Benjamin Samuel Haney on June 6, 1930. He predeceased her on June 19, 1972. They moved to Franklin in 1941, and operated the Haney farm until their retirement in 1967. The farm still remains in the family, and is now operated by Benjamin Haney and his son, Steven.
Ida was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, and loved to quilt with their ladies group. She was also a member of the Washington Reading Circle.
In July 1999, Ida was the matriarch of 97 descendants at the Haney family reunion held in Pigeon Fork, Tenn. She treasured her family, friends, and her life, as well as enjoying gardening.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, Ruth Marie Rutherford of Franklin, Jane Orcella and Floyd Loudenslager of Burr Oak, Mich., Helen Mae and William Boening of Grand Island, Fla., Benjamin Spencer and Laura Haney of Franklin and Ida Roberta and Jack Taylor of Salisbury, N.C. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Don Rutherford.
A funeral service will be held Monday, May 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
Friends may call on Sunday, April 30, 2000, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, N.Y. 13753 or the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Donald Mortensen Sr.
VAN HORNESVILLE — Donald Mortensen Sr., 68, of Summit Hill Road, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born on July 14, 1931, in Hartford, Conn., son of the late Elmer and Dorothy Reardon Mortensen.
He was raised and educated in Bloomfield, Conn.
An honorably discharged United States Army veteran he served during the Korean Conflict.
On Feb. 20, 1954, he married Jacquelyn Parsons in Hartford. They moved to Van Hornesville in 1970, coming here from Windsor, Conn.
In 1999, he retired after 23 years of driving a school bus for Owen D. Young.
Donald was an entrepreneur by heart he had the innate ability to see and old house or parcel of land in need of repair and turn it into a place of charm and grace. He would often say he enjoyed the challenge as much if not more than the end result.
He owned standard bred horses that raced at Vernon Downs and recreational golf was a sport he most enjoyed.
Surviving besides his loving wife of 46 years, Jacquelyn; are four sons and their wives, Donald and Linda Mortensen of Pattersonville, Niels and Suzanne Mortensen of Mohawk, Eric and Sandra Mortensen of Van Hornesville and David and Donna Mortensen of Richardson, Texas; two brothers, John Mortensen and his wife, Phyllis, of Windsor Locks, Conn., and Robert Mortensen of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Shirley Bruyette of Suffield, Conn.; three granddaughters, Erica, Brittany and MacKenzie Mortensen; two stepgrandchildren, Alyssa and Adam Mahoney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Mortensen Jr., and a sister, Phyllis Johnston.
Funeral service will be on Monday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. Interment will follow in Van Hornesville Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive friends and neighbors on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Springfield Ambulance Corp. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Zana H. Coates
SOUTH TROY — Zana H. Coates, RN, CEN, 67, of South Troy, died at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 25, 2000.
She was born in Oneonta. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Monahan and Alberta (Heck) (Monahan) O'Connor.
Zana has been a dedicated registered nurse since 1970, working at Leonard Hospital, Medi-Call, where she was the director of operations and most recently at On-Call Medical in Troy where she was supervisor of emergency services.
She was the co-founder with Joan Smith of the Adirondack Chapter Emergency Nurses Association, past chairwoman of New York State Emergency Nurses Association, past chairwoman of the Regional Emergency Medical Services System, past chairwoman of the New York State Emergency Medical Services System and she was one of the first certified emergency trauma nurses in the United States. As her family says, she has not yet retired from nursing.
Zana is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 48 years, D. Frank Coates; her children, RuthAnne Fennelly, Meg Coates, Thomas Coates and Frank Coates; her grandchildren, Donald, Michael and Venetta Fennelly, Alexandra, Thomas J., Conner, and Molly Coates, Ian and Zachary Shaham and Lucas Hill. She is also survived by her two special daughters-in-law, Deborah (Budini) Coates and Tara (Harmon) Coates; her special cousin, Richard Heck; and several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Marybeth Coates; and her granddaughter, Zana Arye Coates.
Zana loved flowers and asked that she be surrounded by them at her wake and funeral. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wm. Leahy Funeral Home Inc., 336 Third St., Troy, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Troy. Entombment will be in St. Agnes Mausoleum in Menands. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sonja (Kitty) Ward
EAST MEREDITH — Sonja (Kitty) Ward, 73, of East Meredith, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at her home.
She was born April 24, 1927, in Germany, the daughter of Karl and Friederika (Dannhorn) Briegel.
She was married to the late Robert Carl Ward in Germany on Feb. 14, 1958. He died Sept. 1, 1995.
Mrs. Ward is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Liliane and Richard Briscoe of East Meredith; a grandson, Richard and his friend, Tracy Finch, of Hobart; a granddaughter, Christina Zale and husband, Danny, of Hamden; three great-grandchildren, Thomas R. Briscoe, Jenny Lynn Ward and Tristan Ward; a sister, Olga Birkmann of Germany; a brother, Hans Briegel of Germany; and two nieces, Helen Hernandez of Bainbridge and Anita Kinle of Germany.
A grandson, Robert David Ward, predeceased her.
A housewife in her own home, she was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Delhi.
Memorial services will take place on Friday, May 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. John Osterhout officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Meridale.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Meridale Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Charles Thorington
ONEONTA — Charles Louden Thorington, 91, of Oneonta, died on Friday, April 28, 2000, at his home.
He was born on March 6, 1909, in Grand Gorge, the son of the late Watson B. and Grace Mabel Louden Thorington.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Rollins Thorington, on Oct. 16, 1985, and a son-in-law, Derwood Lifgren, in November 1996.
He is survived by two daughters, Beth Lifgren of Emmons Farm and Janet (Alfred) Casagrande of Oneonta; grandchildren, Susan Gurga of California, Daniel Charles Ouimet of Oneonta, Thomas Brandt of Philadelphia and Kathleen (Edward) Oglesby of Unadilla; and great-grandchildren, Joel and Mathew Gurga, Michael Louria Jr., Myles Emmett O'Donnell Ouimet, Justin and Jesse Brandt and Denise, Celeste and Jessica Oglesby.
Mr. Thorington was a longtime resident of the area. He graduated from Hobart High School before graduation from the Electrical Bliss School in College Park, Md., and then business school in Kingston.
He then married Elizabeth Rollins in Hobart. They lived a short time in Hobart, where they engaged in farming. Later, they moved to a farm near South Kortright and then to Mount Vision.
Before moving to Oneonta in 1953, they lived in Otego for a short time. Mr. Thorington was employed by the ceramic division of electrical components with Bendix Corp. in Sidney until his retirement on April 1, 1974. He also owned and operated the "2Bit" Errand Service for many years and worked for the Munson Brothers for 10 years before full retirement.
He was a longtime member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta and the International Association of Aerospace Workers of America.
He was also an avid writer, with his works, called "Charlie's Corner," appearing in papers such as the Stamford Mirror Recorder, the Catskill Mountain News and the Leatherstocking Historical Society for many years. Most recently, 18 of his humorous letters, typical of him, were published for all to enjoy in a book. He will be deeply missed by all who he has touched.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 1, 2000, at noon at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Mark R. Cole, rector of St. James, officiating.
Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the March of Dimes or the Salvation Army in Mr. Thorington's memory.
Linda Carr Fraser
WEST LAURENS — Linda Carr Fraser, 41, of West Laurens, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in Richmond, Va.
She was born Jan. 18, 1959, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Homer E. and Ester Ann (Fessenden) Carr.
She was married to Winnard Fraser on July 10, 1999, in New Lisbon.
She was employed by Wilber Bank of Oneonta for several years and was also a lifelong area resident.
She was a member of the West Laurens Fire Auxiliary and a former member of the Laurens Emergency Squad.
Linda is survived by her husband, Winnard; her parents, Homer and Ester Ann Carr, of Laurens; two brothers, Michael Carr and his wife, Peggy, of Valatie and Andrew Carr and his wife, Joann, of Laurens; her stepchildren, Heather Mcdonald and her husband, Rob, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Hollye Fraser of West Laurens; and her step-grandchildren, Katrina and Victoria Mcdonald.
Linda is also survived by her mother-in-law, Rose Fraser, of Mount Vision; two brothers-in-law, Charles Fraser and his wife, Dora, of Davenport and Allan Fraser and his wife, Margaret, of Mount Vision; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Duval of Richmond, Maine, and Susan Gagnan and her husband, Dick, of Mount Vision; and several aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Mount Vision Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Ellis officiating.
Calling hours will be private at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Laurens Emergency Squad in Linda's memory.
