Harry W. Knapp Sr.

SCHENEVUS — Harry W. Knapp Sr., 80, of Schenevus, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2000, at home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Afton, the son of Jesse and Olive (Finch) Knapp.

He married Hilda Ploutz in Pleasant Mount, Pa.

Harry used to drive truck from Sherburn south hauling produce. Then he worked at Phillips Buick in Oneonta and in the machine shop at Oneonta Tire & Auto.

He moved to Schenevus in 1954, from Meridale, where he opened Knapp's Garage for five years. Harry was then employed at the Schenevus Central School as a bus driver and custodian and later head mechanic at the bus garage, until he retired in 1981, with 21 years of service.

He joined the Schenevus Fire Department, the C.H. Graham Hose Co., in 1959, and was made honorary member in 1996. He was a charter member of the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad. After he retired, he and his wife opened an antique shop and refinishing and repairing shop until he became ill eight months ago.

Harry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by many.

Harry is survived by his wife, Hilda, at home; sons, Harry Jr. and wife, Gail, of Sidney and Edward and wife, Dianne, of Schenevus; daughters, Donna Knapp of Maryland and Donna Stone at home; six grandchildren, Rochelle and Dwain Knapp of Sidney Center, Terri and Chuck Bronson of Sidney, Matt Knapp of Sidney, Andrea Knapp of Forestburgh, Melinda Knapp of Wappingers Falls and Brian Knapp of Schenevus; four great-grandchildren; son, Ronald of Missouri; daughter, Dorothy Valdez of Arizona; brothers, Barney and wife, Irene of Arizona, Hugh and wife, Roseann, of Florida and Jack and wife, Jane, of Florida and West Laurens; brother-in-law, Ivan Ploutz and wife, Pat, of Unadilla; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Slauson of Roxbury, Juanita Ploutz of Oneonta and Joyce Ploutz of Otego; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and two aunts.

He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers, Daniel who was killed in action in World War II, June at age 13, and Frank and wife, Laura Knapp, of West Oneonta.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Rome, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Carl J. Laterra

ONEONTA — Carl J. (Shorty) Laterra, 74, of Oneonta, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Oneonta, the son of Angelo and Raffaela (Dragone) Laterra.

He married Freda Vincent on Nov. 1, 1949, in Oneonta.

He was a veteran of World War II, with the United States Army.

Mr. Laterra was a lifelong area resident, living at Goodyear Lake for the past 25 years.

He was a graduate of Oneonta High School and in his younger years was employed at Bendix Corp. in Sidney. Most recently he retired after 25 years as a salesman for M. Litchman Corp. of Syracuse.

Shorty was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church of Oneonta, BPOE 1312, American Legion Post 259 and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club. He was an avid sports enthusiast, which included several part-time coaching positions and certification as an official in several sports with a preference for basketball, which he refereed for more than 35 years.

He was also an active outdoorsman having enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Laterra is survived by his wife at home; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Virginia) Graver of Oneonta and Mrs. John (Patty) Nazzitto of Norwich; two sisters, Grace Burrows of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Edith Armstrong of Oneonta; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Sam Laterra; and a sister, Josephine Laterra.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 4, 2000, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Longobucco, associate pastor of St. Mary's, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, after 2 p.m., Wednesday, the family will be in attendance from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Elizabeth Robertson

OXFORD — Elizabeth Robertson, 87, formerly of Sidney, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

She was born July 26, 1912, in Ashbyburg, Ky., to Charles and Betsy Luck Tomblinson.

Mrs. Robertson was married to James C. Robertson, who predeceased her on June 6, 1977.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, Sidney.

Mrs. Robertson is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Lee Davis of Brecksville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Michael Rothman of Spokane, Wash., Mark Rothman of Brecken Ridge,  Colo., and Lisa Rothman of Baltimore, Md.

She is predeceased by a sister, Tina Pfendler.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 2, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. David Masland of the United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating.

Calling hours were held Monday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Harry R. Ainslie

ITHACA — Harry R. Ainslie, 76, of 317 Savage Farm Drive, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Kendal at Ithaca.

A native of Hartwick, and son of James L. and Nina Bowmaker Ainslie, he received his bachelor of science, master of science, and doctorate degrees from Kansas State University following service in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He retired in 1983, as emeritus professor of animal science from the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University, after 33 years there.

He was recognized statewide and nationally for his work with the Dairy Herd Improvement program and his educational programs on the value of production records in improving feeding, breeding and dairy herd management.

As a result of this effort there was a significant increase in the number of dairy farms participating in the DHI testing programs, and a central milk analyzing laboratory was established at Ithaca.

It was important to Harry to acknowledge the support received from the following groups of people who worked with the DHIA program: DHIA supervisors, county agents, and the DHIA board of directors.

Prof. Ainslie served on many college, university, state and national boards and committees. Nationally, he was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Coordinating Group, and its Rules and President's committees. Also, he was a member of the National Dairy Shrine.

He was a visiting professor and consultant in extension education at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, and a consultant at international conferences in Japan and Taipei.

In 1979, he received the DeLaval Extension Award of the American Dairy Science Association and in 1981, the Outstanding Service award of the National Dairy Herd Improvement Association.

At his retirement, the Harry R. Ainslie Dairy Herd Improvement Leadership Fund was established at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to honor his dedication and service as "an invaluable leader and innovator in the dairy industry."

He had been a member of the Official Board and Trustees of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ithaca, and was a Paul Harris Fellow and past president of the Ithaca-Cayuga Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Linn; and sons, Gregory and wife, Marilyn, of Cornelius, N.C., and Timothy and wife, Carolyn, of Ithaca; three daughters and husbands, Nina and Kenneth Warren of Overland Park, Kan., Mary and Tom Tracy of Portland, Maine, and Julie of Akron, Ohio; and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Helen Bristol and Alice Gardella; and brother Neilon Ainslie.

He was predeceased by brothers, George H. and Archie A. Ainslie; and a sister, Elizabeth Tedesco.

Services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Friday, May 5, 2000, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Rebecca Dolch officiating. A reception will follow in the Memorial Room at the church.

Prayers of committal at East Lawn Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Harry R. Ainslie Dairy Herd Improvement Leadership Fund at Cornell University or to Gadabout, 737 Willow Ave., Ithaca.

The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg.

Ward H. Letteney

COOPERSTOWN — The Rev. Ward H. Letteney went to be with his friend, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday afternoon, May 1, 2000.

Fr. Letteney was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in West Palm Beach, Fla., a son of Ira. L. and Beatrice I. (Stearns) Letteney.

He was married to Barbara Collins on Sept. 30, 1972, at Grace Church in Cortland.

Following graduation from Chelmsford High School in Chelmsford, Mass., in 1949, Fr. Letteney served with the United States Navy for four years.

He then began a 20-year career as a professional with the Boy Scouts of America, retiring as the Scout executive for Cortland County. He was then called to a new career as an Episcopal priest. He graduated from the State University College of Cortland and later the Episcopal Divinity School at Cambridge, Mass., with a master of divinity degree. Fr. Letteney's new calling began at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown in 1982.

He and his wife, Barbara, later opened their hearts to the people of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Tupper Lake; Camelot, St. Francis Academy, Lake Placid; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney; and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Unadilla.

Fr. Letteney and his wife then returned home to Cooperstown where he was surrounded by his family and wonderful Christian friends at Christ Church.

He was a charter member and past president of the Liverpool Rotary Club, and a former member of the Cortland Rotary Club. Fr. Letteney was also a member of the Association of Accredited Christian Counseling and the New York State Chaplain's Association.

He especially enjoyed playing golf, working in his vegetable garden, and feeding and watching birds.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara; nine children and their spouses, Debbie (Terry) Beishline, Cathie Bisha, Brenda (Gerry) Lang, Cyndi Trembly, Penny (Scott) Butler, Bob (Lisa) Letteney, Jon (Nancy) Trembley, Sharon (Dean) Nugent and Kristen (Bill) Moore; 20 grandchildren; a brother-in-law and his wife, John and Diane Collins; two nieces; and several cousins. He is also survived by his cat, Mitzi, and many loving and devoted friends whom he loved in Christ Jesus.

The burial office with Holy Eucharist will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2000, at Christ Episcopal Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, with the Rt. Rev. Daniel Merzog, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany, celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown,

A two-hour prayer vigil will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the Outreach Program of Christ Episcopal Church, 69 Fair St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Evelyn James

DELHI — Evelyn James, 89, of R.D. 1, Delhi, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been residing.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1910, in Delhi, to Bennard and Besse (Wanamaker) Fleming.

She was married to Aubrey James on July 20, 1932. He predeceased her on Jan. 11, 1978.

She graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi and taught at the one-room school in West Delhi. In later years she was employed at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, Delaware County Nurses Office and Department of Social Services.

Evelyn and Aubrey James owned the Catskill Morgan Farm in West Delhi from 1960-1977, where they raised registered Morgan horses and developed blood lines for the breed. She was a member of the N.Y.S. Morgan Horse Association. She was also a lifelong member of the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church and was a past member of the Ladies Missionary Society of the church.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and reading.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Mullineaux of Liverpool; two sons and daughters-in-law, Winfield A. and Rosalie James of Oneonta and David and Sandra James of Sidney Center; a foster daughter, Maria McAdams of Margaretville; a brother, Donald L. Fleming of West Delhi; seven grandchildren, James and Dale Scofield, Scott Salisbury, Meri-Kay Chase, David A. and Eric James, and Lisa Loveless; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Richard F. Fleming; and a daughter, Marcia J. Salisbury.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church, West Delhi. Enid Carter, commissioned lay preacher, will officiate. Burial will be in the West Delhi Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, on Wednesday, May 3, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the West Delhi United Presbyterian Church.

Virginia A. Stewart

MURRELL'S INLET, S.C. — Virginia Allen Stewart, 79, formerly of Sheldon Street, Norwich, and most recently of Murrell's Inlet, S.C., passed away early Sunday morning, April 30, 2000, at her home in  South Carolina.

A native of Chenango County for most of her life, Virginia was born and raised in Earlville, N.Y.

She was a graduate of the Earlville High School and the Utica School of Business.

Virginia worked for the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce in her early years and was also a senior typist in the Chenango County Clerk's Office, from which she retired in June 1982.

While living in Norwich, she had attended and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norwich. She was a member of Sherburne's Tianderah Chapter No. 631 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Born March 3, 1921, Virginia was the daughter of David and Etta (Plumb) Stewart.

On July 25, 1953, she married Myron John Stewart, who passed away in July 1996.

Virginia is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Karen Stewart and Michael and Patricia Stewart, all of Surfside Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren, Derrick, Chad, Shaun, Meghan and Nicole Stewart; several nephews; and a sister-in-law.

Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Myron John Stewart, and her sister, Dorothy A. Comstock.

Funeral services for Virginia will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. H. Donald Buckley, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church of Norwich, officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. On Thursday evening at 7:30, the Sherburne Tianderah Chapter No. 631, Order of the Eastern Star, will conduct a memorial service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Hearts Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Beatrice V. Coveny

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mrs. Beatrice V. Coveny, 51, passed away Monday, May 1, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born March 11, 1949, in Little Falls, the daughter of Clifford and Mable (Prime) Cook.

On May 4, 1968, she married William M. Coveny in the Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center; he survives.

Mrs. Coveny was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center.

She enjoyed watching NASCAR events, collecting cow memorabilia and painting birdhouses.

Mrs. Coveny enjoyed helping others and was loving and devoted to her friends and family.

Besides her husband of 32 years, William M. Coveny, of East Springfield, she is survived by two sons, William Coveny, and his wife, Kristina, of Ilion and Daniel Coveny and his fiancee, Stacy, of East Springfield; one grandson, Cole Coveny, of Ilion; three sisters, Beverly Douglas and her husband, Roger, of Fort Plain, Barbara Bridger of Springfield Center, and Helen Brown and her husband, DeForest, of East Dover, Vt.; two brothers, Walter Cook and his wife, Carolyn, of Salt Springville and David Cook of Fort Plain; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Swain officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mrs. Coveny's memory my be made to the American Heart Fund.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
