Olga Gruhzit-Hoyt

DELHI — Author and artist Olga Margaret Gruhzit-Hoyt died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, following a short illness.

Ms. Gruhzit-Hoyt was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Columbus, Ga.

She spent her youth in Grosse Pointe, Mich., where she attended Grosse Pointe public schools. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1943. In college she was active on the Michigan Daily, the student newspaper, and she was the first woman editor of Gargoyle, the campus humor magazine.

After graduation from college she went to New York City. She held several jobs in journalism then joined the U.S. Office of War Information as an assistant news editor. In 1944, she went to Beirut, Lebanon, where she supervised editing of women's material for newspapers and magazines. In 1945, she returned to New York to join Time Magazine as an editorial researcher.

She met and married Edwin Palmer Hoyt, then a foreign correspondent for The Denver Post in 1947. Together they traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East covering news stories such as the Czechoslovakian Revolution and the Israeli War of Independence.

During the 1950s, Ms. Gruhzit-Hoyt was a columnist for the Denver Post, the Colorado Springs Free Press and Time Magazine.

While raising a family of three children in New York City, she reviewed children's books for The New York Times as well as being the editor and researcher for her author/husband, Edwin P. Hoyt. They were divorced in 1992.

Ms. Gruhzit-Hoyt continued a career as a free-lance writer and book reviewer for The New York Times, The Denver Post, Time Magazine, The Baltimore Sun, The Daily Press (Newport News, Va.) and the Glouscster-Mathews Virginia Gazette/Journal.

She authored 11 books including: "Lust for Blood: The Consuming Story of Vampires," "They Also Served: American Women in World War II" and her last book, "A Time Remembered: American Women in the Vietnam War," which was published in 1999.

At the time of her death, she was at work on a new book that was to be a compilation of oral histories from Vietnam veterans suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. She periodically reviewed books for the trade magazine Publishers Weekly and compiled book indexes for Presidio Press of San Francisco,  Calif.

In addition to her numerous credits as a professional writer, she was an accomplished artist working in oil paints.

In 1992, she moved to the Delaware River Valley and took up residence in Delhi. In 1993, she founded and became the first president of the Delaware Art Group. Ms. Gruhzit-Hoyt was an active painter and showed her works widely in the Delaware and Otsego counties in New York, including one-woman shows at the Delaware National Bank of Delhi and group shows at Roxbury Art Group and the Cooperstown Art Association.

She is survived by an older sister, Mrs. Maya Elmer of Kensington,  Calif.; three children, Diana P. Hoyt and her husband, Richard P. Mroczynski, of Hughesville, Md., Helga Berliner and her husband, Benjamin C. Berliner, of Hobart and Christopher Hoyt of Dallas,  Texas; as well as three grandsons, Samuel, Zachary and Nathaniel Berliner of Oneonta.

Calling hours will be at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000. A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family on Wednesday. A celebration of the life of Olga Gruhzit-Hoyt will occur at Good Cheap Foods in Delhi from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Nancy E. Emerson

DELHI — Nancy E. Emerson, 85, of Bell Hill, Delhi, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Campbellsville, Ky., the daughter of Edgar Poe and Bettie Z. (Young) Allen.

She married William J. Emerson on May 23, 1936, in Buffalo. William died Nov. 1, 1984.

Nancy was a pottery and ceramics teacher at Delaware Academy in her earlier years. She had been a resident of Delhi since 1918.

Nancy was a member of the Meredith Baptist Church and also attended DeLancey and Hamden United Presbyterian Churches.

She was a former member of the Watauga Chapter, O.E.S. of Delhi. She was a member of the Delhi Bird Club, and was also a Girl Scout and 4-H leader in Delhi. Nancy was past president of the Horticultural Society of Delaware County.

She was a member, past director and past treasurer of the International Lilac Society. She also served on the Delaware County Conservation and Development Association and Historical Association.

She is survived by a son, Allen W. Emerson of Clifton Springs; two grandsons, Allen Jr. and Gregory; two brothers,  Jackson Y. Allen of DeLancey and William R. Allen of Sorrento, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews including Pam Allen Mason of DeLancey, who gave much care to Nancy during her illness; and special friends, Charles Mogridge and family of Hamden.

She was predeceased by a brother, Edgar P. Allen Jr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Hamden United Presbyterian Church, Hamden, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. A fellowship dinner will be held immediately following the service at the church.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Nancy's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Rudolph J. Kessler

TROUT CREEK — Rudolph J. Kessler, 88, of Trout Creek, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Rudolph was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Germany, the son of Max and Emma Keinr Kessler.

He married Julia Groen on April 3, 1937, in Brooklyn.

Rudolph was a retired glass blower for Walter Kessler Co. in New York and has been a resident of Trout Creek since 1950.

Surviving are his wife, Julia, of Trout Creek; his son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Betty Kessler, of Trout Creek; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Clark & Winter Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. Dr. James F. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Trout Creek Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 2, when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Wanda Butts

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Wanda Butts, 80, passed away Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born June 18, 1920, in New Jersey, the daughter of Anthony and Mary Saltys.

On June 21, 1947, in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Springfield Center, she married Donald Butts. He predeceased her in 1977.

She had resided in Springfield Center since 1947.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Springfield Center.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Butts of Springfield Center; a daughter, Linda, and her husband, Alfred Maranzana, of Schenevus; three grandchildren, Angela, Donna and Alfred; a brother, Walter Saltys of Utica; a niece and her husband, Maryann and Richard Bernasconi, of Denville, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Alvin Burnworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.

A public calling hour will take place from 2 p.m. until the service time.

Contributions in Mrs. Butts' memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Springfield First Responders Emergency Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Bernice Patterson

BALTIMORE, Md. — Bernice P. Patterson, 86, formerly of Cooperstown, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Oak Crest Retirement Community in Baltimore, Md.

She was born June 30, 1914, in Walton, N.Y., a daughter of Ernest and Marie (Armstrong) Perry.

She married T. Fulton Patterson on June 30, 1933, in Walton. Fulton passed away on Feb. 4, 1995.

Bernice graduated from Walton High School Class of 1931, Walton Training Class of 1932 and Oneonta State in 1962.

She taught in rural schools near Walton for three years and resumed her teaching career in Hartwick Grade School in 1951, until her retirement in 1969.

Bernice was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, the NYS Retired Teachers Association and Otsego Chapter of the DAR and a former member of the Cherry Valley O.E.S., Cooperstown Women's Club, Westville Grange and Leatherstocking Women's Golf Association. She served actively with the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers until moving to Baltimore in 1996.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and David Merow of Bel Air, Md.; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Gretchen Patterson of  Washington, Pa.; four granddaughters, Patricia A. Saunders and Annemarie Merow, both of Baltimore, Pamela Patterson-Comfort of Ramona,  Calif., and Kimberly Patterson of  Washington, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Steve Quinlan of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

There will be no visitation hours.

Amos E. Chase

BAINBRIDGE — Amos Eugene Chase, 86, of Bainbridge, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, in Albany.

Mr. Chase was born in Westbeary, Minn., the son of the late Eugene and Mabel Hansen Chase.

Mr. Chase married Ruth McCann on May 23, 1963, in Great Bend, Pa.

He served his country in the United States Army in the 5th Engineer Combat Battalion during the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech 4.

From November 1933 to December 1934, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a receiving clerk employed by E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney for more than 30 years.

Mr. Chase was a member of Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post 183, Union Street, Sidney, as well as the Gilbertsville Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed nature.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Chase of Bainbridge; stepson and daughter-in-law, Eli F. and Peg Kelly of Bainbridge; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Dorlyn and Bryan Burgin of Sidney Center, Gail and David Butler of Fly Creek and Angelet and Mike Rampino of Sidney; sister, Sally Waring of Delhi; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by four brothers, Willard, Eugene, Lester and Edwin; one sister, Frances Chase; and two grandsons, Daniel Butler and Allen Jones.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. in the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney, with the Rev. Tony Hipes of the United Methodist Church, Bainbridge, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4797.

Norman Lindsley

SIDNEY — Mr. Norman H. Lindsley of 702 Circle Dr., Sidney, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at The Hospital.

Mr. Lindsley was born Feb. 20, 1933, in Oneonta, the son of Gerald and Alice Lindsley.

He was a graduate of Oneonta High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1950 until 1953, in the Korean War.

In June of 1956, he married Grace Clark at the Unadilla Presbyterian Church. They shared 44 years of marriage.

In 1995, he retired as a supervisor from Amphenol after more than 40 years of service.

Mr. Lindsley enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He was also a Boy Scout Master for Troop 71 in Bainbridge and worked with Little League in Bainbridge.

Survivors include his wife, Grace of Sidney; his sons, Gary of Amsterdam and Dale of Bainbridge; his grandson, T.J. Lindsley of Bainbridge; his great-grandson, Tyler of Bainbridge; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Ken and Jennie Lindsley of Newington, Conn., and Ronald and Anne Lindsley of Otego; his sister and brother-in-law, Norma Jean and Bill Thomas of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, William Lindsley; and his parents, Gerald and Alice Lindsley.

A private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.

Joseph F. Orlando

ONEONTA — Joseph F. Orlando, 69, of Oneonta, died at his home on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, following an extended illness.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1931, in New York City, the son of the late Joseph J. and Emma Stradinger Orlando. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Eugene and Robert; sister, Dorothy; and a grandson, Tyson J.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline Cerone Orlando of Oneonta; two sons, David J. Orlando and his wife, Julie, of Verndale, Minn., and Joseph J. Orlando of Clifton Park; four daughters, Susan Sitterly and her husband, Arthur, of Daytona, Fla., Linda Wintersteen and her husband, Kip, of Holiday, Tenn., Diane Grover and her husband, Marty, of Clifton Park and Catherine Green and her husband, Russell, of Palm Coast, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Orlando was a longtime resident of the area, working with Crandall Furniture Sales in Sidney for more than 33 years until his retirement in 1993.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Hartwick Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Joseph's memory.

Agnes M. Clark

DELHI — Agnes M. Clark, 89, of Delhi, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care in Delhi.

She was born Dec. 3, 1910, in Rock Rift, the daughter of Daniel and Elsie (Beers) Schlafer.

Mrs. Clark was married to the late Wilber Clark and lived in the area all of her life, working at the Buena Vista Motel in Delhi and caring for her home.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, for more than 50 years and sang in the choir.

Her twin sister, Josephine Howland of Walton, and many nieces and nephews, survives her.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Calling hours will precede the service at 10 a.m. Burial will be at West Delhi Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Marion E. Stone

PORTLANDVILLE — Mrs. Marion E. Stone, 87, of Portlandville, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Albany Medical Center due to injuries she sustained in an automobile accident on Sept. 25, 2000.

She is survived by her son, Ken of Portlandville, and was predeceased by her husband, Henry, in 1994.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours or services at this time.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Patricia Freeman

KATY,  Texas — Patricia Ann Freeman, 56, of Katy,  Texas, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, in Houston,  Texas, as a result of an auto accident.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on Aug. 25, 1944, the daughter of William and Dorothy Ann (Cole) Puskas.

She was married to Gail Richard Freeman on Feb. 28, 1992, in Houston,  Texas.

She had resided in Katy,  Texas, since 1985, where she was employed as an accountant with an oil well supply company.

She is survived by her husband, Gail Freeman of Katy,  Texas; her children, Patrick Smith, Andrea Smith Shuffield, Lisa Smith, Dorothy Wood, Brian Devlin, Kathleen S. Baker, Pamela J. Beacham and Michael B. Freeman; her father, Bill Puskas of Otego, N.Y.; three brothers, Billy Puskas of Stoney Point, N.Y., John Cone of Houston,  Texas, and James Cone of Otego, N.Y. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Maureen Puskas; and six grandchildren.

Services are being held in Katy,  Texas, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the  Schmidt Funeral Home and calling hours will be held locally at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, N.Y., on Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Cross R.C. Church in Morris, with the Rev. John Burns officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
