Alton L. Keller

PITTSFIELD — Alton L. Keller, 89, of Pittsfield died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 8, 1911, in the town of Smyrna, the son of Frank and Clara (Isabelle) Keller.

He married Elsie Bates on July 3, 1941. She survives.

He spent is childhood in Smyrna and moved to New Berlin in 1949.

He attended the local Sherburne school.

He was predeceased by one sister, Helen Manley, in 1997.

He was a platter at Scintilla in Sidney for many years before retiring in 1975.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with Pastor Allen Carpenter of the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad, New Berlin.

He was well-liked by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Robert Opramolla

TREADWELL — Robert P. Opramolla, 76, of Treadwell, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 5, 1924, in New York City, the son of Adam and Eugenia (Steffann) Opramolla.

He married Joyce M. Thielk on Aug. 30, 1952, at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento,  Calif.

Bob served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps, and in Korea, serving with the U.S, Air Force as a 1st lieutenant.

He was a graduate of Fordham University, where he majored in economics.

In 1978, he retired as a systems analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, where he was employed for 15 years. Before that he worked in the private sector as a sales agent.

An area resident since 1978, moving here from Westbury, Long Island, Bob was a member of St. Peter's Church in Delhi; American Legion Post 1689, Franklin; the Ouleout Golf Club, and a former member of the CJ Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Treadwell; his children and their spouses, Roberta and James Weinberg of Monroe, Conn., Mark and Faith Opramolla of Treadwell, Joseph and Deborah Opramolla of Rindge, N.H., Thomas Opramolla of Schenectady, John and Larissa Opramolla of North Haven, Conn., Lorraine and Daniel Healy of Ledyard, Conn., and Robert H. Opramolla of Treadwell; and nine grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Viola Catanzaro of Tamarac, Fla.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Joseph Manerowski, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Friends may call today at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter's Church, Delhi, or the Treadwell Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Kathleen R. Pirone

ONEONTA — Kathleen "Kaye" R. Pirone, 71, of Oneonta, died Friday evening, Nov. 24, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Oneonta, the daughter of Harper and Carrie (Perry) Richardson.

She married William Pirone Sr. on Feb. 5, 1961. He survives her.

Kaye was a lifelong area resident. She worked for New York Telephone Co. in Oneonta for 33 years, retiring from the Engineering Department about 1982.

She attended and was a graduate of Oneonta schools.

For the last 17 years, she and her husband spent their winters in Florida and  South Carolina.

Kaye was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of New York Telephone and had served in many different office capacities in that organization.

She enjoyed camping as well as her family and doing things with them. Kaye also was an avid reader.

Kaye is survived by her husband, William Pirone Sr. of Oneonta; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carole Angellotti of Oneonta; a stepson and his wife, William and Rose Anne Pirone of Oneonta; a stepdaughter and her husband, Connie and Joseph Gresser of Brookline, Mass.; her sister, Shirley Barbin of Chenango Bridge; an aunt, Rose Elliott of Morris; a grandson, Michael Angellotti and his wife, Kristina of State College, Pa.; nephew and his wife, Donald and Denise Barbin of Wakeforest, N.C.; niece, Linda Kaye Barbin of Cortland. She is also, survived by several grandchildren; great-grandchildren and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, 2000, from 7 to 9, when the family will be present. Kaye will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 587 Main St., Suite 109, New York Mills, N.Y. 13417 in memory of Kathleen "Kaye" Pirone.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Mathew E. Rogers

ONEONTA — Mathew E. Rogers, 61, died at his home in Oneonta, Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000.

He was born Aug. 4, 1939, in New York City, the son of James and Anna (Burke) Rogers.

He never married.

Two sisters, Jean and John Cometti, Davenport, and Patricia and Thomas Nazario, Queens; and several nieces and nephews survive him.

Mr. Rogers had lived in Oneonta for six years and worked as a laborer for Allied Movers in Oneonta.

Calling hours will be today, Nov. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Prayers will be offered during this time. Funeral services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. James' Episcopal Church, care of The Lord's Table, 305 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Hugh Rutherford

WALTON — Hugh Rutherford, 55, of Walton died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in a farm tractor accident.

Mr. Rutherford was a self-employed truck driver who also enjoyed working as a quarryman.

He married Patricia Whalley on June 4, 1966, in Walton.

He was the husband of Patricia; brother of John and his wife, Priscilla, of Walton, Earl and his wife, Marie, of Brushton and Mary and her husband, Richard Hafele, of Walton. He was the godfather of Tammie Tweedie. Mr. Rutherford is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

His brother Lyle predeceased him.

A service will be held today, Nov. 27, at 2:30 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where the family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walton Fire Department Emergency Squad in his name would be appreciated.

Charles J. Sheldon

OTEGO — Charles J. Sheldon Sr. of Otego, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, on the family farm during a barn fire in Otego.

He was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Otego, the son of William H. and Edith M. (Bowen) Sheldon.

He married Irmabelle Beers on Sept. 20, 1951. She survives him.

He is also survived by seven children and their spouses, Colleen and Gary Bushnell, Laurel and Bennet Johnsen, Charles Jr. and Patty Sheldon, Mark Sheldon, Darryl and Tracy Sheldon, all of Otego, Faith and Glen Stearns of Newnan, Ga., and Matthew Sheldon of Hornell; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Surviving also are a sister, Ruth Barkewitz of Oneonta; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Sheldon of Otego; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Marlett of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Flora Marlett, and a brother, George Sheldon.

Charles graduated from Otego Central School in 1945, and was a dairy farmer most of his life. He was a substitute rural mail carrier for 29 years and a regular carrier for 10 years. He retired in 1989, and has enjoyed traveling, fishing and helping his sons on the farm.

He was a member of Dairylea Milk Cooperative, Otsego County Extension, Otego Old Boys Club, Otego Historical Society, Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange, Otego Rod and Gun Club and the Otego Fire Department.

At one time he worked with the Otego Emergency Squad and was an EMT.

His most devoted membership was in the First Christian Church of Otego where he had held several offices. He was baptized in the creek on his farm in August 1941, and joined the church in the same year.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, from the First Christian Church of Otego, with the Rev. Stephen Miller, pastor of the church, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, today, Nov. 27, after 3 p.m. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the First Christian Church, Otego, N.Y. 13825 or to the Otego Emergency Squad, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825 in memory of Charles Sheldon Sr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Howard G. Slocum

ONEONTA — Howard Grant Slocum, 87, of 13 Morgan Ave., Oneonta, and most recently a resident of A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta, died Thursday evening, Nov. 23, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, following recent surgery.

He was born on April 18, 1913, in Schenectady, the son of Raymond Grant Slocum and R. Lena (Cooper) Slocum. He grew up in Oneonta, attended the Oneonta public schools and graduated with the Class of 1932.

As a child, he delivered newspapers and milk to help the family after his father's death.

He married the former Helen Grace Church at the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta on Sept. 30, 1939. She survives him. The wedding reception was held at the bride's home on Butler Street, Oneonta.

He attended Citizens Military Training Camp in Fort Dix, N.J., for one summer.

During World War II, Howard worked at Scintilla in Sidney, and the couple lived in Sidney. They returned to Oneonta in 1949, and he became employed as a route salesman for Spauldings Bakeries.

Upon retirement in 1974, he worked as a part-time inserter for the Oneonta Daily Star.

He served as trustee and financial secretary at Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta and belonged to the choir and Men's Club. He was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, where he had served as an usher and delivered meals to the homebound with his wife, Helen. He joined the

Masons in 1938, and was a current member of the Masonic Lodge #801 in Sidney.

He greatly enjoyed travel, meeting people through his business and socially, loved baseball — the New York Yankees, other sports, and music. From 1992 until September of 1999, he traveled daily to Norwich to visit his wife, who resided at Gilmour Health Care Facility. He then visited her daily at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

Howard is survived by his wife, Helen C. Slocum, who resides at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home; and his daughter, Ann Lynne Slocum.

He was predeceased by his father, Raymond; and his mother, R. Lena. His sister, Grace, died on Nov. 21, 1998.

Other surviving relatives include Mrs. Ruth Fischer of Folsom, Pa., and Mrs. Wanda Case of Albion, Mich. His in-laws (Helen's family) include Mrs. Loren L. Brandow of Binghamton, Mrs. Robert Loller of Sidney, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Riddell of Colliersville and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Church of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Swanson, formerly of Orlando, Fla.; Mr. Robert Loller of Sidney and Mr. Loren L. Brandow, formerly of Binghamton.

His nieces and nephews include, Carol Loller Swenson of Fairport, Susan E. Brandow of Endwell, Thomas R. Loller and his wife, Sheri of Greece, N.Y., Patricia Riddell Kent and her husband, Steven, of Oneonta and Nancy E. Swanson of Lake Mary, Fla.

He was predeceased by nephews Wayne P. Swanson, formerly of Orlando, Fla., and Robert B. Riddell, formerly of Colliersville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, and the Rev. Joseph A. Fiske, retired Methodist minister from Morris, officiating. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home this evening at 7:30. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, this evening from 7 to 9, when the family will be present. Mr. Slocum will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home Private Vault to await spring burial in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Memorials may be sent to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, One Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, Pearl & Everett Gilmour Health Care Facility, 88 Calvary Drive, Norwich, N.Y. 13815, or to the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Francis E. Walsh

COBLESKILL — Francis E. Walsh of Union Street, Cobleskill, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at his home, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Hillsdale, N.J., son of William J. and Mary Ellen O'Farrell.

Mr. Walsh moved from Brooklyn to Cobleskill in 1982, and had been employed as a switchman in the Oneonta office of the New York Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1992.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy.

Mr. Walsh was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and a member of Post #5088, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cobleskill.

He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Cobleskill.

Mr. Walsh was married on June 5, 1965, in Brooklyn to Eleanor Caton, who survives.

Besides his wife, who resides in Cobleskill, he is survived by five daughters, Eleanor Klepper of Tappan, Marijeanne Broadwell, Kathleen Briggs and Patricia Walsh, all of Carlisle and Anne Marie Kovac of Middleburgh; and two sons, William Walsh of Wilmington, N.C., and James Walsh of Cobleskill. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and a sister, Phyllis Bogner of Manchester, N.H.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church,  Washington Heights, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Thomas F. Berardi, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Cobleskill.

Friends and relatives may call tonight and Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St., Cobleskill, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 MacArthur Ave., Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043 will be appreciated.

Vera Trumbull

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Vera Katherine Spalt Trumbull, 87, of Cooperstown, died late Friday morning, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Vera was born on July 16, 1913, in the city of Kingston, a daughter of Charles Jacob and Marion (Wenzel) Spalt.

She married Myron Sherman Trumbull on Oct. 11, 1962, in Milford. Mr. Trumbull died on Feb. 1, 1998.

After her graduation from Kingston High School in 1931, Vera trained as a nurse at the Kingston Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1935. In 1940, she entered Syracuse University to study public health nursing. Her education, however, was delayed for 31/2 years while she served her country in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II.

Vera entered the United States Army on Nov. 13, 1942, and served as a nurse in the 52nd General Hospital in England and France for two years and in Belgium for 11/2 years with the 130th General Hospital. During this time the hospital was evacuated from Ciney, Belgium, to Charloi, Belgium, due to the "Battle of the Bulge," with her unit two miles from the front lines.

During her time in the service, she received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. She was honorably discharged from the United States Army on Jan. 4, 1946, holding the rank of first lieutenant.

Upon her discharge, Vera returned to Syracuse University and in 1947 received her bachelor of science degree in nursing. She practiced nursing for both public and private health agencies until 1949, when she went on to do graduate work at Columbia University in New York City. She received her master's degree in public health nursing from Columbia University in 1950.

In 1951, Vera moved to Cooperstown and took on a dual position as assistant professor at Hartwick College in Oneonta and director of Home Nursing at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She taught at Hartwick College until 1961, and she spent the last 10 years of her nursing career as supervisor of the outpatient department at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.

Retiring in 1974, Vera continued her lifelong career of assisting others by helping teach and raise funds for the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association.

A former longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, Vera later attended and supported Christ Episcopal Church in Cooperstown. She was also a member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 in Cooperstown and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 200 in Oneonta.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Vera's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of her family in the spring of 2001 at Evergreen Cemetery in Salem.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, 48 Grove St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326 or to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
