Leola A. Sisson

JEFFERSON — Leola A. Sisson, 68, of Clapper Hollow Road, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the home of her sister, Emma Guy, following a long illness.

She was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Lutheranville, the daughter of Lawrence Sisson and Margaret (McMullen) Sisson Allen.

She was a lifelong area resident. She retired in 1994 from Story House Corporation of Charlotteville, where she had worked for five years.

Miss Sisson was a member of the First Summit Baptist Church of Charlotteville.

She is survived by 10 sisters, Gladys Lashway of Schenectady, Hazel Swint of Berne, Emma Guy of Central Bridge, Evelyn Dearstyne of Tolland, Conn., Alice Stopa of Niagara Falls, Shirley Aitken of Cobleskill, K. Linda Knight of Central Bridge, Linda Aitken of Delhi, Darlene Althiser of Charlotteville and Deborah Allen of Cobleskill; two brothers, William Sisson of Richmondville and Roger Allen of Cobleskill; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Deugan of the First Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001.

Spring burial will be in the Sloansville Valley Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Summit Baptist Church, Baptist Church Road, Charlotteville.

Lise L. Bibeau

NEW BERLIN — Lise L. Bibeau, 91, formerly of Oneonta and Maryland, N.Y., died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.

She was born in Canada on June 14, 1909, the daughter of Doria and Aurore Gauthier, one of 15 children.

She studied music in Montreal and became an opera singer on the radio and stage.

She married Daniel Bibeau and made her home in Oneonta where she raised six children.

Lise was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta.

She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Paul and Mary Ann Gauthier of North Carolina, Janet and Gary Woodrow of Maryland, N.Y., Loretta and Paul Stolpinski of Norwich and Paulette and Ron Gural of Guilford; one son and his wife, Daniel and Nancy Bibeau of Rotterdam. She is survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers; three sisters and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, her daughter, Carol Bibeau and two grandchildren.

Funeral prayers will be held 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, thence to a Mass of Christian Burial to be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Lise L. Bibeau.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Florence C. Layton

SIDNEY CENTER — Florence Cora Layton, 90, of Sidney Center, died Monday, Jan 1, 2001, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where she had been residing.

She was born Oct. 14, 1910, in Trout Creek to Dexter and Adelia Bailey Ingalls.

She was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Moose Club and the VFW of Sidney, the Women's Auxiliary of the Trout Creek Fire Department and the Trout Creek Senior Citizens.

She had been employed by Breakstone's Dairy in Walton.

Florence Layton is survived by sons, James Layton, Masonville, Richard (Cindy) Layton, Walton, and William (Kathryn) Layton, Sidney Center; daughters, Loretta (Russell) Turner, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Bernita (Timothy) Henry, Beauford, S.C. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Jaqueline Wood, a daughter-in-law, Christina Layton, and a sister, Dorothy Palumbo.

Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, from 7 to 8 p.m. immediately followed by a memorial service at 8 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Chapel, corner North and Delaware streets, Walton, with Pastor David Gatje officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Trout Creek Emergency Squad.

Jay Cooke Taber

DIMOCK, Pa. — Jay Cooke Taber of Dimock, Pa., passed away Saturday at Berwick Hospital, Berwick, Pa.

He was born in Oneonta, N.Y., on July 20, 1909, son of the late Henry Bull and Lillian Cooke Taber.

He attended Oneonta Public Schools and Cornell University.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Taber was employed at Bendix Manufacturing Co. as a master mechanic.

He was a member of the Free Masons-Sidney Lodge, N.Y., and the Amateur Ham Radio Operators of America.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Spencer Taber; son, Thomas Taber of Clifton, N.J.; grandson, Thomas Jay Taber II; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son, Richard Taber; sisters, Rachel Haughey, Josephine Gode and Harriet Berg; and brother, Joseph Taber.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements by the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, Pa.

Percy Pugh

WEST EDMESTON — Percy Frederick Pugh, 51, of Coontown Mountain Road, West Edmeston, died at home on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001.

Elsie Glockler

SAYLORSBURG, Pa. — Elsie Bertha Glockler, 91, of Pleasant Valley Manor, Saylorsburg, Pa., died Dec. 31, 2000, at the Pleasant Valley Manor, Saylorsburg, Pa., after an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Rauschenbaft, Germany, the daughter of Oswald and Bertha Ebert.

She was married to Anton Karl Glockler for 34 years. He predeceased her on May 16, 1964.

She was a homemaker and loving mother.

She is survived by her children, Bill Glockler of Cooperstown, Elsie Klimpel of Saint James, Rose Schwedler of  Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Kerri Gelish of Saint James, Chris Glockler of Clifton Park, Heidi Niell of Franklin, Mass., Arthur of Erda, Utah and Eric Schwedler of Tucson, Ariz.; and a great-grandchild, Luke Eric Schwedler of Tucson, Ariz.

She was cremated and there will be a small family get-together on Jan. 3, 2001.

Funeral arrangements were by the Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg, Pa.

Irene Rutan Marks

BALLSTON SPA — Irene Rutan Marks, 87, formerly of Church Avenue, Ballston Spa, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa.

She was born in Oneonta on March 9, 1913, the daughter of Henry and Lorenia Rutan.

She and her husband owned and operated the Smack Bar in Ballston Spa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Marks.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Floy S. Hyde

BINGHAMTON — Dr. Floy S. Hyde, of Mountain View, died Dec. 27, 2000, at the Wilson Memorial Medical Center in Binghamton.

She was born May 28, 1902, in Chateaugay, the only child of George E. and Mary Whipple Salls.

She was educated in Malone schools and graduated from Franklin Academy in 1919.

From 1924 to 1956, she and her husband, L. Eldred Hyde, owned and operated the summer resort hotel Hyde-Park-in-the-Adirondacks, at Mountain View. It was out of this experience that she authored two books, "Water Over the Dam at Mountain View in the Adirondacks" and "Adirondack Forests, Fields, and Mines."

After earning the degree of doctor of philosophy from Columbia University in 1949, she joined the executive staff of the Board of Education of the Presbyterian Church US in the national office in Richmond, Va. Later, she took on an executive position with the National Council of Churches in the USA, in New York City. In both of these positions she was responsible for formulating new regional and national programs for the development of lay leadership in the church.

From 1959 to 1967, Dr. Hyde was associate professor of religion at Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Dr. Hyde had held leadership positions on both local and state boards of the American Association of University Women and of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also the recipient of many academic honors and was listed in the first edition of "Who's Who Of American Women."

In Malone, Dr. Hyde was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church since 1912, and of the Adirondack Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

After the death of her husband in 1981, Dr. Hyde continued to enjoy returning each summer to her home at Mountain View and being a part of the community.

She was a leader and organist at the Union Protestant Church of Mountain View for many summer sessions.

Dr. Hyde is survived by one son, Gilbert Hyde, and his wife, Leora of Winter Springs, Fla.; also by four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, George Albert Hyde, predeceased her in 1956, as did an infant daughter in 1928.

A memorial service will be announced later to be held this summer at the Union Protestant Church of Mountain View. Private interment services will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family in the Morningside Cemetery of Malone.

Arrangements are by the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone.

Francis Mosher

EAST DURHAM — Francis Mosher, 64, of Country Estates West, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at his home after a short illness.

Born in Springfield, Otsego County, Mr. Mosher lived most of his life in Richfield Springs until moving to East Durham in 1995.

He was a 1954 graduate of Richfield Springs Central School and he attended the Utica School of Commerce.

For 22 years, Mr. Mosher was a machinist for Chicago Pneumatic of Utica. Before that, he owned and operated Mosher's Glass Repair in Otsego. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Fretts Mosher; three daughters, Linda Ford of Ilion, Tracy Baker of East Springfield and Stacy Rowley of East Durham; two stepsons, James "Chip" Muller of Cooperstown and John Muller of South Portland, Maine; a stepdaughter, Linda Coon of Benzonia, Mich.; a brother, Ronald Moshier of Richfield Springs; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; four stepgrandchildren; and his beloved cat, "Rat."

He was predeceased by a brother, William Mosher.

A service of the Burial office and Holy Communion will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Church, Main Street, Richfield Springs.

Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Lappeus Funeral Home, 32 Park St., Sharon Springs.

Spring burial will be in South Columbia Cemetery, town of Columbia, Herkimer County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1450 Western Avenue, Room 101, Albany, N.Y. 12203-3572.

Mary E. Covello

BLOOMVILLE — Mary E. Covello, 89, of Bloomville and formerly of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

She was born July 1, 1911, in Hoboken, N.J., the daughter of Joseph and Jennie (Dato) Bilotti.

She married Joseph Covello in Brooklyn on Sept. 2, 1934. He predeceased her Dec. 16, 1989.

Mrs. Covello retired from the New York Telephone Co. in 1965, after working as a telephone operator.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rosemarie and Peter Hugues, Bloomville; granddaughters, Dolores Simmons, Jayme Van Bure and Anna Marie Melendez; and great-grandchildren, Adriane Matos, Andrew Melendez, Peter Simmons, Nicolas Van Buren, Joseph Simmons and Alyssa Melendez.

Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Fr. Joseph Cebula officiating. Calling hours will be on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Robinson Terrace, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

William Wells

STAMFORD — William Wells, 87, of Countryside Care Center, Delhi, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 6, 1913, in  Jefferson, the son of Ward and Zanah (Decker) Wells.

He was married to Helen Oakley on June 19, 1969. Helen died March 7, 1993.

Bill was a resident of the Stamford area most of his life. He was in business as a milk hauler and cutting pulp wood for many years.

Bill is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Randall and John Wells.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Joe Bokel, chaplain at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, and the Pastor of the Plymouth Community Church in Walton, officiating. The burial will be at a later date in the Stamford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday morning after 10 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.

William R. O'Dell

WALTON — William R. O'Dell Jr., 56, of East Brook Rd., Walton, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001.

Bill was born on March 28, 1944, in Walton, the son of William and Hazel Wright O'Dell.

He graduated from Walton Central in 1963 and was a farm worker. He worked at Walton Cemetery for several years and, in 1988, joined the custodial staff at Walton Central School.

Bill belonged to the National Guard for 20 years, the Walton Grange #1454 and Delaware County Pomona Grange; a volunteer at the Hanford Mills Museum and a life member of the NRA. He also enjoyed raising sheep and had a great love for farm animals.

Surviving are his parents, William R. and Hazel O'Dell of Walton; four brothers, Charles of Walton, David of Liberty, James of Walton and Bruce of Delhi; two sisters, Mrs. George (Mildred) Baker of Tyrone, Pa., and Mrs. Emmett (Ruth) Reilly of Amherst. Also surviving are two aunts and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Walton, with the Rev. Paul Cronin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the First Congregational Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorials to the First Congregational Church or the American Heart Association in the name of William R. O'Dell Jr. appreciated.

Helen Shroh

SCHOHARIE — Mrs. Helen ( White) Shroh, 94, of Bridge Street, Schoharie, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after a brief illness.

She was born July 9, 1906, in Worcester, the daughter of John and Gussie (Riddell)  White.

She was educated in Worcester schools. She had lived most of her life in Schoharie.

She was married to Floyd C. Shroh on Nov. 26, 1924, and until his death, Feb. 1, 1989.

Mrs. Shroh co-owned and operated with her husband the Main Street Garage in Schoharie for nearly 40 years before retiring in 1977. During this time, she also worked in the Schoharie High School cafeteria for over 20 years.

She was a charter member of the Shunpikers Campers Club and was a volunteer for many years at the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, presently the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County. She was a former member of the Schoharie B.P.W.

Up until her death, Mrs. Shroh hand-knitted hundreds of lap robes and between 1,200 and 1,400 pairs of mittens that she donated to the Christmas Bureau. For several years, she knitted Teddy Bear sweaters that she gave to the Double-H-Hole in the  Woods Camp in Lake George.

In 1957, Mrs. Shroh was accepted to show a rug hooking at the New York City Rug Show, in which she won an award.

At the age of 90, she flew with her granddaughter in a single-engine plane to  White Plains and back. At the age of 92, she drove a team of horses and rode on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Mosher of Vorheesville; a son, Raeburn F. Shroh of Schoharie; five grandchildren, Charles Jeffrey of Gallupville, Richard Jeffrey of Central Bridge, Cynthia Treis of Schoharie, William Shroh and Floyd Shroh, both of Schoharie; six great-grandchildren, Danielle and Andrew Jeffrey, Kristin, Jeffrey, Pamala Shroh, Christopher Shroh, and Falon Treis. She was pre-deceased by a son, Robert G. Shroh, in 1987.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at the Langan Funeral Home, 227 Main St., Schoharie. The Rev. Jared van Wagenen, pastor of the Schoharie Reformed Church, will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date in the Lutheran Cemetery, Schoharie.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at the Langan Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Schoharie County A.R.C. Foundation, P.O. Box 307, Schoharie, or to Scho-Wright Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 325, Schoharie.
