Donald Barnard

SHERRILL — Mr. Donald Barnard, 83, of 221 E. Hinds Ave., died early Friday evening, Jan. 19, 2001, at the Oneida Healthcare Center following a lengthy illness.

Don was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Westernville, son of Charles and Edith Van Dressar Barnard.

He was educated in Westernville.

On June 29, 1940, in Ava, Don was united in marriage with the former Doris Harmon, a union that lasted until her death on Dec. 16, 1991.

Don was veteran of World War II, having proudly served overseas with the United States Army Air Corps.

Before his retirement in 1979, Don was employed with Oneida Limited in the casting department.

He was a member of Christ Church United Methodist of Sherrill and the church's Tousley Woodworkers Club, the Community Associated Clubs and the American Legion Post #230, both of Sherrill.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Christian Heberle of Minoa, Deb and Jim Hilts of Oneonta; one son and significant other, Daniel Barnard and Rhea Andrews of Sante Fe Springs,  Calif.; and six grandchildren, James and Kenneth Barnard, Alyssa and Ashley Heberle and Cale Hilts and Trish Jubinville. Also, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet Wells of Remsen; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Christ Church United Methodist, Sherrill, with the Rev. M. Russell Lee officiating. Burial will be this spring in Valley View Cemetery, Oneida. Friends may call at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 464 Sherrill Road, Sherrill, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In Mr. Barnard's memory, contributions may be made to Christ Church United Methodist, Sherrill, N.Y. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Raymond Kratochvil

NORTH BLENHEIM — Raymond Albert Kratochvil, 68, of Route 30, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at his residence.

He was an area resident for the past 24 years, having formerly resided in Halcott Center.

He was self-employed and worked his whole life in logging, the sawmill operation and firewood production. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering with heavy equipment. He loved his cats.

He was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Halcott Center, son of the late Charles and Gertrude Hasbrouck Kratochvil.

Surviving are his dear companion of 17 years, Ethel Goodchild; daughters, Linda Boland of Gilboa, Teresa Clark of Grand Gorge, Michele Mattice of North Blenheim and Denise Rose of Gilboa; sons, Lynn A. Kratochvil of Poultney, Vt., Chris of Grand Gorge, and Burton and Wayne Maxim of North Blenheim; a brother, Richard of Tucson, Ariz.; and 15 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his sons Ray, in 1983, and Calvin, in 2000, and a brother, Stanley.

A service to celebrate the life of Ray Kratochvil will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia, with the Rev. Robert Nash of the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Gorge Hose Co.

Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.

Clarence Johnston

ONEONTA — Clarence L. Johnston, 91, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 4, 1909, in Carey, Ohio, the son of Thomas and Rosa (Phillips) Johnston.

He married Ella B. Burnside Jan. 8, 1955, in Oneonta. Mrs. Johnston died Nov. 11, 2000.

Mr. Johnston was a self-employed electrician and, along with his wife, owned and operated the Johnston store, restaurant and soda fountain on Chestnut Street in Oneonta until 1969.

He was a longtime area resident, moving to the area from Carey, Ohio, in 1914.

Mr. Johnston was a former member of BPOE 1312 and the Oneonta Lions Club; he was also an accomplished pilot.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved cat, Diana.

He was predeceased by his wife and his sister, Merian Kunz of Delmar.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John D. Greiner, pastor of the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marius Nickels

MARGARETVILLE — Marius E.A. Nickels, 87, of Margaretville, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Mildstedt, Germany, the son of Claus Nickels and Emma C. Stauben.

He married Maya Ottenthal on May 27, 1944, in Germany.

He was a chemist for Allied Chemicals, Philadelphia, Pa.

He lived in Margaretville for the past 16 years.

He is survived by his wife, Maya Nickels of Margaretville; one son, Waldemar Nickels of Monroe, N.C.; and one grandson.

Private funeral and committal services will be conducted at a later date.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Frances Waddington

ONEONTA — Frances S. Waddington ("Angel" to her grandchildren), 81, died on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer.

Frances was a dedicated public servant concerned with the health, education, and well-being of her community. Her efforts earned her the 1985 Oneonta Jaycees Citizen of the Year Award and the 1990 College at Oneonta Foundation Distinguished Service Award.

Frances was appointed to the Huntington Memorial Library Board of Trustees and was instrumental in the library's capital campaign. She served as president from 1993 to 2000.

In 1990, she became a member of the Board of Directors of the State University College at Oneonta and served as secretary and chairperson of the Membership Committee. In 1996, a scholarship was instituted in her name.

Frances took a lively interest in politics, especially on the local and state levels. She was a charter member and an active supporter of the League of Women Voters. In 1975, she ran for office and was elected to the Otsego County Board of Representatives. She enjoyed campaigning door-to-door and was the first woman to serve as Otsego County representative. This commenced a 14-year tenure on the Board, which ended with her retirement in 1989.

As a board member, she gave high priority to social programs, including the Office for the Aging, The Meadows, health care and rural housing. She was a member of the Statewide Association of Women Office Holders and the New York State Democratic Committee. Frances was honored for her political activism in 1987, when Governor Mario Cuomo appointed her to the Upstate Council of Elected Officials.

Though born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1919, Frances was raised in Wilkes Barre, Pa., and always considered this to be her hometown. Her parents, Peter and Frances Sabalaske, were of Lithuanian ancestry.

Frances received a scholarship to College Misericordia, Dallas, Pa., and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942.

She moved to New York City with her sister Leona and took a job as a legal secretary with a Wall Street firm, hoping to study law at Fordham University; a hope that was never realized.

In 1944, she met and married George R. Waddington, then a Naval officer serving at the Naval Training Station at Fort Schuyler.

With the end of World War II, George took a teaching position in the Oneonta Public Schools in 1946, and the Waddingtons began their longtime residency in Oneonta.

Travel was one of Frances' favorite pastimes. With her husband, George, she visited many parts of the world and cultivated an interest in people and cultures from around the world.

While at home in Oneonta, Frances made their own dining room table an international meeting place, hosting visitors of diverse cultures and nationalities.

Frances was a lifelong supporter of the arts. She enjoyed and excelled at many varied artistic endeavors, including painting, woodworking, sculpting and sewing. Her love of the arts extended into the community when she helped to establish the Oneonta Community Arts Center and served as one of its early directors.

Frances was also an active member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, George; a daughter, Margot and son-in-law James Vagliardo of Apalachin; a son, George Jr. and daughter-in-law Catherine of Reading, Mass.; five grandchildren, Kristen and Courtney Vagliardo, Anneliese, Calum and Mariella Waddington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Leona Thomas.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. A reception will be held at St. James Episcopal Church immediately following the service. Friends are invited to bring written tributes and memories of Frances to be placed in a book honoring her life.

In lieu of flowers, Frances requested that contributions be made to the Building Fund, Huntington Memorial Library, Oneonta, N.Y., the Frances S. Waddington Scholarship Fund at SUCO or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Joseph C. Head

COBLESKILL — Joseph C. Head, 74, of Maple Road, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany after being stricken.

Mr. Head was born July 19, 1926, in Niskayuna, the son of Reuben D. and Meri (Choate) Head.

Mr. Head attended kindergarten at Riverside School in Schenectady and then Van Antwerp School until eighth grade. In the ninth grade, Mr. Head attended Nott Terrace School, receiving the remainder of his early education at St. Edmonds Prep School in Stockbridge, Mass., until World War II broke out and the school closed due to the young men going to war.

Mr. Head then went to Doylestown, Pa., and worked for Burpee Seed Company when he was almost 17. He was a graduate of the State University of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, where he received an associate's degree in horticulture.

Mr. Head was a United States Navy Veteran, serving in the Seabees from November 1944 to June 1946. He served with the 15th Construction Battalion, then the 36th Naval Construction Battalion and lastly the 58th Construction Battalion maintenance unit. He was a member of the Veterans' Foreign War Post #5088 of Cobleskill.

Following his discharge, Mr. Head was employed as a traveling salesman for Hyponex. Later he became a salesman for Van Wagenenen's Farm Machinery & International Trucks in Cobleskill.

In 1950, Mr. Head was an assistant production manager for Harder Silo. He started his own business, opening a gas station and repair shop on Main Street in Cobleskill in 1958. In 1962, Mr. Head became the proprietor of the former Head's Sales & Service, located in Lawyersville. In 1981, he sold the business to his son. Mr. Head was employed by the Cobleskill Central School District as a bus driver since 1971 and, in 1981, became the transportation supervisor, retiring in 1991.

Mr. Head was extremely active in the community, at one time serving as the Cobleskill Town Assessor and also on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Mr. Head was a lifetime member of the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Department. He was also the head of the Cobleskill Volunteer Rescue Squad for 15 years and was a first-aid instructor for the American Red Cross.

Mr. Head was a past president and served as a director of the Cobleskill Exchange Club. He was also a former member of the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club.

He and his wife, Betty, enjoyed the winter at their residence in Estero, Fla.

A member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Mr. Head served on the building committee as well as being a former warden.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth (Varick) Head, who died March 31, 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Betty (Newman) Head, whom he married Feb. 7, 1992; a son, David C. Head of Cobleskill; two daughters, Sally Head of Albany and Suzanne Whitney of Cobleskill; a stepdaughter, Katherine Hill-Brown of Berne; a sister, Barbara Down of Hilton Head, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Brian D. Head, Jonathan Whitney, Trevor K. Brown and Elizabeth Whitney.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Department or the Cobleskill Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Lillian F. Vandy

MARATHON, Fla. — Lillian F. Creighton Vandy, age 88, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Marathon, Fla., after an extended illness.

Lillian was born on April 7, 1912, in New York City, the daughter of Nicholas and Annunciata Fazio.

She left formal schooling at the age of 12 to become a seamstress and spent her younger years as a tailor in New York City.

Lillian moved to Oneonta in 1947 and started the Oneonta Dress Co., with seven persons, which grew to employing over 400 persons in the early 1960s.

She was well respected as a leading and innovative businessperson in the Oneonta area.

She was also a devout member of the Catholic Church, inducted into the Third Order of St. Francis in 1982. She was a benefactor of St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, San Pablo's in Marathon, Fla., and the Dominican Retreat House in Schenectady, N.Y. Lillian was active in the choir at St. Mary's and well known for her hospitality and cooking.

She retired in 1972 and moved to Florida.

She married Edward Vandy in 1977, who predeceased her in 1980.

She is survived by one sister, Josephine Grossman of Tucson, Ariz.; and three children, Nancy Coletti of Marathon, Fla., Madeline and her husband, Frank Bagnardi, of Oneonta, N.Y. and Joseph and wife, Marianna, Creighton of Otego, N.Y. She was the proud grandmother of Sal and Tonya Coletti of Mauldin, S.C., Steve and Debra Coletti of Summerville, S.C., Marie Coletti-Masson of Summerville, S.C., Robert and Rebecca Coletti of Marathon, Fla., Frank and Juliette Bagnardi Jr. of Boston, Mass., John and Kelly Bagnardi of Plantation, Fla., Nancy and Kevin Thompson of Boston, Mass., Janet and Scott Ford of Syracuse, N.Y., Tracie and George  Jones of Oneonta, Carrie and Tony Chickerell of Birmingham, Ala., Shelly and David Rosen of Pittstown, N.J., Darci and Kent Merwin of Davenport, N.Y., Joannne Creighton-Solovitch of Atlanta, Ga., Dolores Creighton of Eustice, Fla., and Joshua and Rebecca Creighton of Raleigh, S.C. She is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews in the Maraglio and Grossman families.

Committal services were held at Big Pine Key, Fla., on Jan. 20, 2001.

Donations in memory of Lillian may be made to St. Mary's School Building Fund, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

James T. Aitken

DELHI — James T. Aitken, 81, died at home in Delhi, Monday, Jan. 22, 2001.

He was born Feb. 27, 1919, in Delhi, the son of James and Isabelle (Robertson) Aitken.

He was married to the late Gertrude Gabrielson Aug. 12, 1949. She passed away March 15, 1985.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Aitken was a resident of Andes until 1972, when he moved to Delhi. He was a farmer in Andes and owned and operated the Andes Grocery Store; later he worked in heavy equipment construction on Route I-88 and drove a bus for Delaware County, BOCES and 4-H.

Two daughters, Gail Krone, Jersey City, N.J., and Margaret Miglianti, Delhi; two sons, James J. Aitken, Delhi, and William R. Aitken, Syracuse; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson as well as several nieces and nephews survive.

A sister, Margaret Whittaker, predeceased him.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
