Irene Y. Daniels

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Irene Y. Daniels, 88, formerly of Cooperstown, died early Wednesday morning, May 2, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1912, in Middlefield, a daughter of Floyd S. and Myrtle J. (Putnam) Yerdon.

She first married Alfred H. Camp on Jan. 6, 1932, in Cherry Valley. Mr. Camp died on Oct. 26, 1963. She then married Howard A. Daniels on Jan. 8, 1966, in Cooperstown. Mr. Daniels died on Oct. 20, 1971.

Irene grew up in Cherry Valley and attended school there.

She was employed at the Cooperstown Diner from 1951 until 1966.

Following her marriage to Mr. Daniels, Irene lived in Rockdale for 20 years, returning to Cooperstown in 1986.

She was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Ellen Little Missionary Circle, the Middlefield Historical Association, the Senior Citizen Club of Roseboom and was a volunteer at The Meadows. She was also a former member of The Pocohantas and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cooperstown VFW.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Floyd A. and Joan L. Camp of Indiantown, Fla.; her grandchildren, Michael C. Camp of Sayville, Long Island, and Mrs. Patricia A. Bergerson of Oakdale, Long Island; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Harris F. Yerdon, and his wife, Margaret, of Cherry Valley; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Gallup of Cooperstown; one cousin and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Ceylon F. Yerdon and George A. Yerdon; and three sisters, Mrs. Helen E. Delaney, Mrs. Wava K. Snyder and Mrs. Edna M. Madison.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Middlefield Cemetery.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund, care of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Lynn Persons Jr.

COOPERSTOWN — Lynn R. Persons Jr., 68, of Cooperstown, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born July 15, 1932, in Oneonta, a son of Pearl Mackey Persons and Lynn R. Persons Sr., both of whom are deceased.

He married Pamela M. Dean on Jan. 8, 1953, in the Rectory of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.

For 28 years he helped operate the family farm on the Hartwick-Index Road. Following that he worked at Phillips Lumber Mill in Hartwick until his retirement in 1995.

Lynn was a talented woodworker, designing and building many pieces of furniture for his family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong area resident who supported and encouraged many with the thoughtfulness and care he showed them.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Persons of Cooperstown; his three children and their spouses, Marvin and Deb (Bowen) Persons of Sellersville, Pa., Kathy (Persons) and Lance MacGregor of Hartwick and Debbie (Persons) and Bob Hanes of Cassville; two sisters, Joyce and her husband, Tar Reidinger, of Charlton and Margie Davidson of Hartwick; six grandchildren, Sarah, Nathan and Christopher Persons, Scott and Katie MacGregor and Tennille Raymer; two great-aunts; and several nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. Family and friends may join the family for a time of remembrance of Lynn at his home on Saturday, May 5, 2001, from noon until 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

William Conlon

MARGARETVILLE — William Ward Conlon, 64, of Margaretville, died May 1, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 9, 1936, in Brooklyn, the son of Francis Conlon and Bonita Perry.

He married Geraldine Lewis 44 years ago, on Jan. 12, 1957, in Lindenhurst.

He was in the Marines. He was a retired United States Airways flight dispatcher in Salisbury, Md., and owner of Mug and Mallet Restaurant #2 in Ocean City, Md.,

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, and a former member of Margaretville Fire Department. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and was an avid antique collector.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine (Gerry) Ann Conlon of Margaretville; four daughters, Cathy Strege of Selbyville, Del., Candace and Marshall Rudd of Crawfordville, Fla., Christina and Dale Blakeslee of Crawfordville, Fla., and Cynthia Conlon and Mark Persons of Pine Hill; one son, Ward Conlon of Margaretville; grandchildren, Amanda and Carrie Strege, Lindsey and Brittany Blakeslee and Sands Rudd; two brothers, Walter Conlon of Sag Harbor and Frank Conlon of Laurel, Md.; two sisters, Bonita Murphy of Melbourne, Fla., and Carol Cabanas of Sayville.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as celebrant.

Contributions in memory of William Conlon may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Evelyn Simmons Cole-Edwards

CHERRY VALLEY — Graveside committal services and burial for Evelyn Simmons Cole-Edwards, 76, of Troy, formerly of Cherry Valley, and Daytona, Fla., who passed away Dec. 9, 2000, in Troy, will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Canajoharie Cemetery, Canajoharie, with the Rev. John Bartle officiating.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Michael B. Gleason

SCHENEVUS — The committal service for Michael B. Gleason, who died March 29, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Schenevus Cemetery, with the Rev. Henry Geerken officiating.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Frances McDonald

WALTON — Frances J. McDonald, 90, of Walton, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at the Delaware Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1910, in Downsville, the daughter of the late Charles H. and Sadie Radeker Conklin. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ralph J. McDonald Sr. in 1965; a brother, Merritt R. Conklin; and a nephew, Robert C. Conklin.

She is survived by a son, Ralph J. McDonald Jr., and his wife, Florence, of Walton; a granddaughter, Karen Gabriel of Delhi; two great-grandchildren, Branden and Cody Gabriel of Delhi; one sister-in-law, Doris Conklin, of Walton; a special niece, Marilyn Lewis, and her husband, Phil, of Walton; a nephew, Thomas Conklin, and his wife, Vickie, of Walton; two grandnieces; and three grandnephews.

Frances was born in Downsville, and married Ralph J. McDonald in 1930.

She has been a lifetime resident of the area, moving to Walton in 1964.

She was employed with Tony's Shoe Store for more than 15 years retiring in the late 70s.

She was an active member of the Walton United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women Group. In addition, she was active in BPW, Order of the Eastern Star in Downsville, the Walton Grange and the Rebeccahs in Delhi.

She was a very social person who had a kind word for everyone. She also loved to spoil her children, and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Chapel, corner of Delaware and North streets, Walton, with the Rev. Allan Bujno officiating. Interment will follow in Paige Cemetery, Downsville. The family will receive friends one hour before services at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to: Walton United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton, N.Y. 13856, or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Frances' memory.

Robert Jones

LEWISBURG, Ky. — Robert Larry Jones, age 51, of Lewisburg, Ky., formerly of Unadilla, N.Y., died on May 1, 2001, in Russellville, Ky.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1949, in Walton, N.Y., to Robert Lewis Jones, who survives and Freda Roof Jones.

He is also survived by his wife, Bonnie Burgher Jones; two sons, Brian  Jones of Lewisburg, Ky., and Kevin  Jones of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Foster of Unadilla, N.Y., and Pam Herbert of Bainbridge, N.Y.; and two brothers, Ernest  Jones of Bainbridge, N.Y., and Joel  Jones of Oneonta, N.Y.

His funeral services will be at the Price Funeral Home Inc. of Lewisburg, Ky., on Friday, May 4, 2001, at 3 p.m.

Steven Hanzalik

ONEONTA — Steven Ward Hanzalik, 58, of Oneonta, died May 2, 2001, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 23, 1943, in Oneonta, the son of Albert and Laura (Myers) Hanzalik.

Mr. Hanzalik was a self-employed electrical contractor and general construction contractor in the Oneonta area until ill health forced his retirement.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his father of Homestead, Fla.; and three brothers, Ronald of Oneonta, Albert of Manlius and Thomas Hanzalik of Schenectady; one aunt, Mrs. Paul (Mary) Rusnak of Binghamton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, when the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edna H. Cook

UNADILLA — Edna H. Cook, 81, of Unadilla, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born March 24, 1920, in West Hoboken, N.J., the daughter of Ernst and Elizabeth (Wacker) Heerwagen.

She was married to Claude S. Cook on April 3, 1947, in Unadilla.

Edna was a lifelong resident of Unadilla, a graduate of Unadilla Central School, Class of 1938, and in 1984, retired from Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, following 42 years of service.

She was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Edna is survived by her husband, Claude S. Cook, of Unadilla; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret DeForest, Elsie Sisson and Helen Johnson.

Memorial services will be held later at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Sarah J. Wenzel

BURLINGTON FLATS — Sarah J. Wenzel, 79, of Burlington Flats, died Thursday evening, May 3, 2001, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Albany.

She was born in Burlington Flats on Sept. 16, 1921, a daughter of Lynn and Eva (Palmer) Washburn.

Sarah graduated from Edmeston High School and then went to Juillard School of Music in New York. She has been an area resident most of her life.

Sarah was a medical secretary at Bassett Healthcare for many years until her retirement.

She married Robert J. Wenzel on Nov. 19, 1977. He died Dec. 12, 1997.

Sarah was an avid member of St. Alban's Church in Schuyler Lake. She enjoyed singing and gardening and loved dogs.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Mary Wallace of Albany; four grandsons, Donald, John, Robert and Richard F. Wallace; five granddaughters, Tracey Gurner and her husband, Jason, Jamie Nolli and her husband, Kevin, Mari Grace and Sarah and Meghan Wallace; seven great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter-in-law, Maryann Heath, and her husband, Kenneth; and a stepgrandchild, Daniel Heath.

A funeral service will be held at the St. Alban's Angelican Church in Schuyler Lake on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Albert Jungers, priest in charge of the St. Alban's Angelican Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be Monday, May 7, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be at later date in Burlington Flats.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Frank A. Cavallo

COOPERSTOWN — Frank A. Cavallo, 81, of Cooperstown, died on April 26, 2001, after suffering complications from kidney failure.

Mr. Cavallo was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., before the family moved to New York City where he spent most of his life. He attended PS 78 in the Bronx before joining the United States Army in 1941. He saw action during World War II with the 5th Infantry Division, participating in the Normandy landing and Battle of the Bulge.

After the Army, he became a union carpenter with local 257 in Manhattan before retiring in 1977 to McDonough.

He was a lifelong Yankee fan, a member of VFW Post 1478, and he particularly enjoyed the tranquillity of upstate New York.

Survivors include his wife, Estella; and two sons, Raymond and Michael of Ormond Beach, Fla.

Frank Cavallo will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

Barbara Hickling

EDMESTON — Barbara G. Hickling, 88, of Edmeston, died May 5, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Bloomington, the daughter of Victor Hugo and Ethel Hazel (Turk) Osborn.

She married Ralph Garrigan on Nov. 25, 1937, he predeceased her in 1976. Barbara later married Earl Hickling, on Dec. 13, 1991.

Barbara graduated from Worcester Central School in 1932.

She farmed with her husband in Pittsfield and Edmeston until 1971. She was appointed Edmeston town clerk August 1973, and was consecutively re-elected until her retirement in 1991.

Barbara was a member of the Second Baptist Church and had served for several years as the church clerk. She also held various positions in the American Baptist Women.

Barbara boarded numerous foster children, and she liked to do crafts, refurbish furniture, crocheting and knitting. She will be remembered as a virtuous woman.

She is survived by her husband, Earl; her foster daughter, Jessica  White; her nephew, Victor Osborn; cousins; stepchildren; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Victor H. Osborn, and her foster son, Lawrence Lockwood.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at noon at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey officiating. Calling hours are today, May 7, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment is at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Gertrude Aldrich

LAURENS — Gertrude Niles Aldrich, 97, of Laurens, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at her home.

She was born on Nov. 5, 1903, the daughter of Egbert S. Niles and Nellie Baker Niles, in the town of Laurens, where she resided for most of her life.

She married Boyd R. Aldrich on July 9, 1927, in Oneonta. Mr. Aldrich died Dec. 19, 1992.

Gertrude graduated from Oneonta High School, Oneonta Normal School and received her B.S. degree from the State University College at Oneonta.

She retired from teaching in the New Berlin Central School after 27 years in the educational field.

Gertrude was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church and the Laurens Chapter #518 O.E.S. She was regent of the Oneonta Chapter of the N.Y.S.D.A.R. from 1983-1986.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold L. and Phyllis Aldrich of Varysburg, and Wayne N. and Florence Aldrich of New Berlin, and Barbara Aldrich of Laurens; six grandchildren and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, Boyd, Gertrude was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Alfred (Hattie) Scott, brother, Darwin E. Niles, and son, Earl B. Aldrich.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Harry Myers officiating. Burial will be in the Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, May 7, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, May 8, 2001, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. An O.E.S service will be rendered by the Laurens Chapter #518 O.E.S at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 7, at the funeral home.

Gertrude Aldrich lived a long and fulfilling life dedicated to her family and the Laurens community. She was a school teacher, a dairy farmer, avid bird enthusiast, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Sunday School teacher and home gardener. She loved wise old sayings, playing the piano and old-time hymn singing.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820; to the Laurens O.E.S., Laurens, N.Y. 13796 or to the Laurens Presbyterian Church, Laurens, N.Y. 13796.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
