Rapheal M. Delello

BAINBRIDGE — Rapheal M. Delello, 92, of 23 South Main St., Bainbridge, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, May 24, 2001, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born July 7, 1908, in Sanitaria Springs, the daughter of the late Frank and Maria Caracciola Delello. Sr. Rapheal was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of St. John's Church, Bainbridge.

She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bastine and Florence Delello of Endwell, Joseph and Tommy Delello of Utica, and Frank and Jean Delello of Bainbridge; two sisters, Diane Zuccarelli of Boundbrook, N.J., and Lucy Argiro of Albuquerque, N.M.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, from St. John's Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, when her family will be in attendance. A wake service will be held at 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in her name maybe directed to St. John's Church, Bainbridge, N.Y. 13733.

Mary J. Stewart

DAVENPORT — Mary J. Stewart, 73, of Davenport died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Oct. 14, 1927, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the daughter of Garland and Mary Jane (Campbell) Gilkison.

Mrs. Stewart had worked in secretarial positions in Oneonta and enjoyed keeping her home.

Her first husband, James E. Grimes, predeceased her in 1986. She then married Ermon Stewart, and he predeceased her Jan. 27, 2001.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet Hanson of Oneonta; a son, Robert Grimes, Portlandville, N.Y.; a grandson, James H. Donlin of Oneonta; sisters, Lucille Pillar, Ilaine Wain, Ruby Hall and Shirley Jean Mackey, all of East Liverpool, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Terry Grimes; sister, Josephine Lascola; and brother, Garland Gilkison, predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Elizabeth M. Kelly

ONEONTA — Elizabeth Marie Kelly, 96, of Oneonta, died on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 28, 1904, in Oneonta, the daughter of Salvatore and Mary Draggone. She married Frank Kelly in 1920, and he died in 1963.

Mrs. Kelly was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Church.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Joseph Kelly in 1981, and two sisters, Mary Baldo and Raffalea Laterra.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday May 26, 2001, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home on Saturday from 8 a.m. until departing for church.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Beatrice H. Benson

NORWICH — Beatrice H. Benson, 76, of Chenango Valley Home, formerly of New Berlin, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Norwich.

She was born Aug. 12, 1924, in West Edmeston, to Harry and Margie (Crandall) Bice.

She married Alf Benson on July 15, 1944. He died Dec. 13, 1994. She spent her childhood and attended school in the Columbus area.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Harley Hall and Linda and Ray Gregory, all of Norwich; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sally Benson of New Berlin; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Orthello "Shorty" Bice, of Greensborough, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Lillian Simmons, in 1994.

Beatrice was at one time part-owner of the Hacienda Restaurant in New Berlin. She spent her married life with her husband, Alf, on the Benson homestead farm on West Hill, New Berlin. In 1971 they purchased what came to be known as the Sun-Ben Farm in Pittsfield, which they operated in partnership with their son, David, until Alf's death in 1994.

At this time Bea moved to Norwich and made many friends while helping with the United Methodist Church's Soup and Sandwich Program and while residing at the Chenango Valley Home. She was an avid doll collector and had a great love for children. Although severely handicapped by rheumatoid arthritis, Bea always had a smile on her face and seldom complained. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She was a member of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, May 26, 2001, at 3 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, Norwich, and granddaughter the Rev. Amy Gregory of New York City officiating.

Burial will be Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, or the Broad Street United Methodist Church, Norwich.

Shirley A. Shaver

HUDSON — Shirley A. Shaver, 66, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Community Hospice of Albany in St. Peter's Hospital.

Born in Oneonta, Shirley was a resident of Hudson for the past 28 years.

She was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Austin Beauty School. She retired from Fairview Pizzeria in Hudson.

She was an avid bowler and a member of the Friday Nite Mixed League. She was also a member of the QVC Insider Club. In recent years, she was the personal secretary to the commissioner of the Empire Football League.

Mrs. Shaver is survived by her husband, Gary A. Shaver, of Hudson; her daughter and son-in-law, Lou Ann and Stephen Beecher, of Crownsville, Md.; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Patricia Shaver, of Troy; her mother, Frances Collins, of Oneonta; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Betty Collins Sloan of Oneonta, Joyce and Irwin Bensink of Clymer and JoAnne and John Murphy of Saratoga Springs; three grandchildren, Beth and Gary Beecher and Ajah Ciccarelli; a great-grandson, Sean Lawrence; and 10 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father, Vernon Collins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Hudson. Following the service, visitation with the family and refreshments will be held at the church.

Hilda R. Watrous

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Hilda R. Watrous of 407 Lady Huntingdon Lane, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in the presence of family at St. Joseph's Hospital, Asheville, N.C.

She was born in Oneonta, N.Y., on May 30, 1930, and graduated from Cortland High School and the New York State Teachers College in Cortland, N.Y. She taught elementary school for several years in Scotia, N.Y., and worked as a social worker in the inner city of Schenectady, N.Y.

She was active in the New York League of Women Voters and served as a past historian.

She was a published author who wrote works of historical research on Eleanor Roosevelt, the League of Women Voters, Seneca County, N.Y., and Owego, N.Y.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and held many positions at the local and church conference levels in New York state.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Donald Watrous of Asheville, N.C.; son, Jay Watrous, daughter-in-law, Sherry Watrous; and granddaughter, Alyssa, of Cumming, Ga.; brother, Howard Robison, sister-in-law, Harriet Robison, and niece, Elaine Tantalo, of Rochester, N.Y.; and nephew, David Robison of Wilmington, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at the Central United Methodist Church Chapel, Asheville, at 2 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial fund has been established to begin and sustain a Cancer Support Group at Central UMC. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church St., Asheville, N.C. 28801 and be designated for the Hilda R. Watrous memoriam.

Dennis J. Roe

MOUNT VISION — Dennis J. Roe, 45, of Mount Vision, died May 24, 2001, at his home.

He was born June 12, 1955, in Walton, the son of Sherman and Helen (Stewart) Roe.

Dennis was in the construction trade following service from 1972-74, in the United States Army.

He volunteered time helping people with chemical dependency.

"In his short time here he left many impressions in the hearts of everyone who knew him." He was a devoted family man.

He is survived by his mother, Helen Smith of Mount Vision; his fiancee, Debbie Vosburth, and her daughter, Danielle Vosburth, of Mount Vision; his children, Dennis J. Roe Jr. of Clyde, Nichole J. Ellis of Herkimer, Amber J. Roe and Crystal J. Roe; four grandchildren; his brother and sisters, Sandra J. Hobick of Richfield Springs, Kenneth J. Roe of Laurens, Gerald J. and Elaine Roe of Oneonta, Carol A. Ehlert of Morris, Virginia and Ronald Winn of East Meredith and Audrey Roe of Mount Vision; his stepmother, Sherry (Roe) Garvin of Mount Vision; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will take place on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Mount Vision Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stephen Bicknell officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Mount Vision Fire Department, Mount Vision.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Andrew Andela Sr.

BURLINGTON FLATS — Andrew Andela Sr., 81, of Burlington Flats, died May 15, 2001, at his daughter's home in Burlington Flats.

He was born on March 21, 1920, in Clifton, N.J., the son of Nicholas and Jessie (Hamersma) Andela.

In 1944, he married Catherine Zigterman of Prospect Park, N.J. She predeceased him in August 1998.

He was a resident of New Jersey, until his retirement. Since then, he has resided in Richfield Springs, Burlington Flats and Okeechobee, Fla.

For many years he was a self-employed contractor, and later worked for the Passaic (N.J.) Parks Department.

He was an active member of the Preakness Christian Reformed Church in Wayne, N.J., and after retirement, a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church in Mohawk.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald of Unadilla Forks and Andrew of Flushing; and two daughters, Ruth Yielding of Okeechobee, Fla., and Kathleen DeJong of Burlington Flats. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard and Walter; and two sisters, Jane Appelo and Agnes Kuiken.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 10 a.m. at The Church on the Hill in Flushing, after which his cremains will be interred in the Memorial Rose Garden at the church.

Funeral arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Kevin Chamberlain

DAVENPORT — Kevin Bruce Chamberlain, formerly of Schenevus, 45, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001, unexpectedly at his residence.

He was born June 21, 1955, in Oneonta, the son of Sidney Chamberlain and Marie Carroza Chamberlain.

Kevin was raised in Schenevus and has lived in various area towns. He was a member of the Mountain View Social Club and attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, while he lived there.

Kevin is survived by his mother, Marie M. Chamberlain of Schenevus; father, Sidney Chamberlain of Schenevus; brother, Warren Chamberlain of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several aunts and cousins

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus. A vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in memory of Kevin to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Louise Sanborn

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Mrs. Louise Mulkins Sanborn, 82, of Orange Park, Fla., and formerly of the Cooperstown, N.Y., and Utica, N.Y., areas, passed away on Dec. 24, 2000, at the Life Care Center of Orange Park.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1918, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Charles and Louise (Schidzick) Mulkins.

A resident of the Cooperstown and Utica areas, Louise was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Utica and its Ladies Circle. She was also involved with the Animal Protection League.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she spent her life in service to others.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ellis Sanborn, of Orange Park, Fla.; her son, Colby Sanborn, and his wife, Cindy, of Clinton; her daughter, Diedre Hicken, and her husband, David, of Orange Park, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

We were truly blessed to share our lives with her.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Mark Caruana, pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Utica, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ruth P. Burnett

WEST DAVENPORT — Mrs. Ruth P. Burnett, 82, of West Davenport, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at her home with her family beside her.

She was born in Coventry, Conn., May 23, 1919, a daughter of Robert and Minnie Pitkin.

A librarian at James M. Milne Library at the State University College at Oneonta in the reference and acquisitions departments for 20 years, Ruth was instrumental in creating a fine academic library.

She was treasurer of the West Davenport United Methodist Church for more than 30 years and an active member of the Davenport Historical Association and Center for Continuing Adult Learning.

Ruth loved sewing and was an avid gardener, superb cook and devoted wife and mother.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Richard W. Burnett; daughters, Barbara, Nancy and Marjorie; and grandchildren, Abby and Sarah.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 (432-6773) or the charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.

Anne E. Stoeter

NEW YORK CITY — Anne E. Stoeter, 84, of New York City, passed away Friday, May 25, 2001.

She was born Nov. 19, 1916, daughter of Henry and Veronica (Kubic) Varecha in New York City.

Anne married Charles Stoeter. He predeceased her.

She is survived by daughter, Lorraine Smith of Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Ramona Stoeter of Florida; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Patricia Varecha of Long Island; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is also predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy McInnes.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Burial will be in Roger's Hollow Cemetery, Unadilla.

Arrangements area by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Joseph Koker III

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Joseph Koker III, 63, died March 3, 2001, in Buffalo. He was the son of Joseph Jr. and Antonia (Kenik) Koker.

A memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church in Summit, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
