Reuel Alfred deTurk

SIMSBURY, Conn. — Reuel Alfred deTurk, 87, of Belden Forest Court, Simsbury, Conn., husband of the late Ruth Ethel (Danner) deTurk, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Governor's House in Simsbury.

He was born Nov. 28, 1913, in Allentown, Pa., son of the late Alfred Louis and Ellaphena L. (Schaeffer) deTurk, and had lived in Warren, Mass., before moving to Simsbury in 1956.

Mr. deTurk was a draftsman at Hamilton Standard for 30 years before his retirement in 1978, and he also owned and operated the Ox Yoke Shop, a western clothing store in Simsbury for 30 years.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Simsbury, past master of Quaboag Masonic Lodge F&AM, of Warren, Mass., a member of the Revere Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, of Warren, Mass., the Simsbury Civitan Club and the Simsbury Codgers.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Lesley deTurk of Chesterfield, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Arthur Maxwell of Delhi, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren, David Wyman of Manlius, N.Y., Leanne Legg of Hamden, N.Y., Heather Wilson of Puerto Rico, Susan Little of DeLancey, N.Y., Margaret Maxwell of Syracuse, N.Y., Christopher deTurk of Tempe, Ariz., and Jonathan deTurk of St. Louis, Mo.; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, on Thursday, June 14, 2001, from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jean Blanning officiating. Burial will be in Simsbury Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1004, Meriden, Conn. 06450-1004.

Hazel L. Hibbert

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hazel L. Hibbert, 84, a resident of county Road 68, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at the Saratoga Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1916, in Harpursville, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William and Edith Bowker Nichols Sr.

Mrs. Hibbert was a member of the Old Saratoga Reformed Church and Old Saratoga Post #278 American Legion in Schuylerville.

Survivors include her husband, George W. Hibbert III of Saratoga Springs; her children, George W. Hibbert IV of Wilton, Arline Silvernail of Schenectady, Florence Richmond of Saratoga Springs, Helen Persons of Warrensburg, Virginia Knapp of Saratoga Springs and Lillian Curley of Lake Luzerne; a brother, Lee Madden of Charlottville; a sister, Mary Ives of Worcester; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fairmount Cemetery in Quaker Springs, with the Rev. Joyce deVelder officiating.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Flynn Bros. Inc. Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville.

The family suggests memorials in her name be made to the Leukemia Society in memory of her grandson, Anthony Richmond.

Philip McDermott

UNADILLA — Philip "Butch" S. McDermott, 59, of Unadilla, died June 10, 2001, at Albany Medical Center.

He was born May 26, 1942, son of Hugh and Mary McDermott, in Patugue.

Phil was an avid hunter and worked in the Tri-Town area for 25 years as a painter and carpenter.

He is survived by his good friend, Terry Fedorowicz; daughter, Mina McDermott; sons, Michael and Joseph McDermott; brothers, Theodore, William and Lawrence McDermott; sisters, Darlene Elbert, Patricia Bolles and Margaret Merrill; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Arrangements by C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Elizabeth Hoffman

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Elizabeth G. Hoffman, of Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001.

She was born in Oneonta, N.Y., on Feb. 28, 1919, the daughter of Frank M. and Joy (Towt) Gurney.

She attended the Oneonta school system and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1937. She graduated from Oneonta Normal School in 1940.

In 1941, she married William L. Hoffman in Oneonta.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Oneonta Woman's Club and the Fox Hospital Guild.

During World War II, she was on the faculty of Tenacle, a school for girls in Wellesley, Mass.

She is survived by her husband, William L. Hoffman; one son, William F. Hoffman of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and James Layton of Pine Plains, N.Y.; four granddaughters, Stephanie Schwarze, Sonya and Sarah Layton and Jennifer Hoffman.

She made her home in Boynton Beach, Fla., and Oneonta.

There will not be any funeral service, and interment will be at a later date. Please no flowers or donations.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Anna Eckstrom

ONEONTA — Anna Eckstrom (nee Durdack) died at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the age of 90.

Mrs. Eckstrom, who was born on Sept. 15, 1910, in Linden, N.J., was married in 1929 to Roy Eckstrom, a civil engineer for the city of New York and graduate of New York University.

The Eckstroms and their four children lived in New York City, and after Mr. Eckstrom's retirement the couple moved to Warwick. In later years, they enjoyed life on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Cape Coral and Fort Myers.

After raising her family, Mrs. Eckstrom worked as a telephone operator, first in New York City for the Bell company and later at the Playboy Club in northern New Jersey.

An avid traveler, Mrs. Eckstrom accompanied her husband on many trips to Australia, visiting their son and his family.

Always active, she enjoyed crocheting, painting and gardening, and was especially proud of her tomatoes in her Warwick garden.

After Mr. Eckstrom's death in 1995, Mrs. Eckstrom remained in Florida until 2000, when she moved to New York state to be closer to her family, and spent her last year at the Hampshire House in Oneonta.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Eggler of North Franklin; her son, John Eckstrom of Sydney, Australia; and by six grandchildren, Marianne Eggler-Gerozissis of New York City, Robert Eggler of North Franklin, William Eggler of Albany, Linda Dunn of Manchester, Tenn., Nathaniel Eckstrom of Sydney, Australia, and Nicole Eckstrom of New York City; as well as four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two children, Barbara Eckstrom (1933-1978) and Roberta Wheeler (1937-2001).

A private memorial service is planned.

Leona M. Nelson

SCHENEVUS — Leona M. Nelson, 82, a resident of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born June 16, 1918, in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Adelard and Marguerite (Desjardin) Charbonneau.

She married Ralph Nelson in 1937, in Derby, Vt. He died Nov. 15, 1993.

Mrs. Nelson moved to Schenevus in 1961. She and her husband owned a dairy farm in Schenevus.

Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women's Club, Truth Seekers, and Young at Heart Club.

Over the years, she was a loving foster mother and enjoyed crocheting and knitting and has made many beautiful afghans and crafts.

She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife, Betty Nelson of Crossville, Tenn.; three daughters, Rita Nelson of Oneonta, Doris and her husband, Werner Moennich, of Morris and Freda Treadwell of  Jefferson; five grandchildren, John, Bryan and Rebecca Treadwell, Kelly Thompson and Kimberly Moennich; a sister, Rita Desjardin of Waterbury, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Albertine Charbonneau of Vermont and Margaret Hanssen of New Rochelle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Schenevus United Methodist Church, Main Street. Burial will follow at Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Schenevus United Methodist Church, Main Street, Schenevus, C.H. Graham Hose Co., P.O. Box 116, Schenevus, or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

John V. Dutcher

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — John V. Dutcher, 52, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., and most recently of Rio Rancho, N.M., died on June 5, 2001, in Rio Rancho.

He was born July 26, 1948, in Oneonta, the son of Frank V. and Dora (Wilson) Dutcher.

John was a 1966 graduate of Oneonta High School and attended Johnstown Community College.

He was employed by Intel Corp. in Rio Rancho as a chemical engineer. While living in Oneonta he was a businessman, and owned and operated the Corner Bar.

John is survived by a daughter, Kelly Dutcher of Oneonta; his mother, Dora Delberta, and her husband, Joe, of Oneonta; and his sisters, Laurie Schroeder of Colgate, Wis., Charlene Palmer of Davenport Center, Ellen Austin of Oneonta, Anne LoVerde of Oneonta and June Gano of Davenport Center. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of John V. Dutcher will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. George Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Milford Cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from noon until service time on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Ernest 'Bill' York

BRODHEAD, Ky. — Ernest "Bill" York, 46, of Brodhead, Ky., and formerly of Margaretville, N.Y., passed away June 11, 2001, in Brodhead, Ky., from injuries in a logging accident in Kentucky.

He was born Sept. 9, 1954, in Margaretville, the son of Ernest York and Joyce Beardsley.

He was a logger most of his life. For the past few years, he lived in Kentucky and most of his life he lived in the Arkville, N.Y., and Margaretville areas.

York is survived by one daughter, Fawnya Beth York of  Pennsylvania; four sisters, Jean Cromer of Kentucky, Laura York of Stamford, N.Y., Penny and Thomas Davis and Rikki Brew of Margaretville; two brothers, John and Kathy York of Margaretville and Leonard Shultis of Georgia; 12 nieces, Leah, Cissy, Joyce, Karen, Jennifer, Heather, Jeannie, Jody, Julie, Melody, Analee and Caitlin; five nephews, Buck, Patrick, Jason, Michael and Christopher; and four great-nephews, Michael, Corbin, Brandon and Jonathan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Burial will be held at the Margaretville Cemetery in Margaretville. Calling hours are Friday, June 15, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Mary Finch

FRANKLIN — Mary Elizabeth Finch, 89, of Franklin, died Monday evening, June 11, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Rock Rift, the daughter of George D. and Henrietta (Gilson) Lambert.

She married Ralph Paul Finch on Nov. 25, 1931, in Rock Rift. He died in 1972.

A homemaker in her own home, Mary had lived in Franklin since 1941. For the past eight years, she lived with her daughter Marjorie Schmitz in Otego before moving to Gardenview Manor in Otego.

Mary is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Jimmie Finch of Walton and Donald and Wendy Finch of Franklin; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marjorie Schmitz of Otego and Patricia and John Miller of Red Hook; one sister, Arline Budine of Fredericksburg, Va.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Finch, and a daughter, Irene Hotaling.

Mary will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris and burial of her cremains will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

Wilson Miller

STAMFORD — Mr. Wilson Miller, age 80, passed away suddenly June 9, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church in Prattsville on June 24, 2001, at 2 p.m. Following the service, there will be a picnic at Pratt Rock. All are welcome and covered dishes are appreciated.

Mr. Miller was loved by all and will be missed deeply.

In the place of flowers, money for his wife will be appreciated.

Frank J. Wening

STAMFORD — Committal services for Frank J. Wening of Stamford, who died Jan. 18, 2001, will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford, with Fr. Anthony Ligato officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Leona M. Nelson

SCHENEVUS — Leona M. Nelson, 82, a resident of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Bianca Gabrielle Wilcox, 5 weeks old, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born May 10, 2001, in Cooperstown.

Bianca is survived by her parents, Jesse Wilcox and Brandy  White of Charlotteville; her brother, Anthony  White of Charlotteville; grandparents, Philip and Cindy  White of Charlotteville and Louise Wilcox of East Meredith; great-grandparents, Elizabeth  White of Decatur and Gary and Beverly Ball of Charlotteville; great-great-grandmother, Emma Ball of East Worcester; aunts and uncles, Jeff Wilcox of Fergusonville, Michelle Lare of Charlotteville, Bob Wilcox and Joe Wilcox, both of East Meredith, Trudy Wilcox of Binghamton, Jamie  White of Charlotteville and Brian  White of Cherry Valley; a dear friend, Shirley Kennedy of Charlotteville; and many cousins and special family friends.

She was predeceased by her grandfather, Ike Wilcox; great-grandfather, Stuart Charles  White; great-great-grandparents, Fred Ball, Morris and Carrie Terrell; and special friends, Eddie Nyback and Dwaine Lare.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 15, 2001, from 2 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Charlotteville Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Bianca to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 South Lake Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12208.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St. in Worcester.
