Evelyn Lloyd

ROSENDALE — Mrs. Evelyn "Bunny" Beck Lloyd, a devoted mother and grandmother, who married the man of her dreams and lived quietly in a little red farmhouse in West Laurens, died in the early morning hours of July 15, 2001, at the age of 83. She had been in failing health for the past year, but her death of congestive heart failure was peaceful, and she was surrounded by her family.

Lloyd worked at Woolworth's as a young woman but otherwise never held an outside job.

Her life was dedicated to raising her three children, caring for her animals, tending her vegetable garden and socializing with friends. Every summer, her three oldest grandchildren would come to her farm for two weeks and pick blueberries, paddle around the small pond, watch the Lawrence Welk show and eat massive amounts of ice cream and Cool Whip.

Lloyd, who was called "Bunny" by everyone in her family, received the nickname nearly 40 years ago when she presented her toddler grandson with a stuffed rabbit.

She follows to heaven her beloved husband, Connie Otis Lloyd, who died on St. Patrick's Day in 1978.

She is survived by her three children, Nancy Lloyd Rillings and her husband, Kenneth, of Salem, S.C., Jean Lloyd Insolia and her husband, Anthony, also of Salem, S.C., and Fred R. Lloyd and his wife, Jeanne, of Kingston.

The Lloyds moved from Oceanside to a red clapboard farmhouse in West Laurens in 1966, when their youngest son finished high school. There, they set about raising a cow named Mary Alice, assorted peafowl, a dog called Dolly and two Siamese cats, Charlotte and Culpepper.

Lloyd was born in Watauga County, N.C., and graduated from Hugh Marston High School in Raleigh.

She was the youngest daughter of John Beck and Charlotte  Johnson Beck.

She is survived by a brother, Robert Beck of Imperial Beach,  Calif.; a sister, Kathryn Warner of Lumberton, N.C.; and a special nephew, Andrew "Sonny" Lanier. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Kenneth Rillings Jr. of Cobnifer,  Colo., Kara Morgan of Redding, Conn., Robin Ireland of Wayne, Pa., David Uris of Walker, Minn., Orit Sara Lloyd of Paramus, N.J., and Charlotte and James Lloyd, of Kingston. She had six great-grandchildren, Jared Conroy Rillings, Michaela Rillings, Madeleine Ireland, Claire Ireland, Christopher Farmer and Annika Lee Morgan.

Lloyd was a member of the Morris Methodist Church and the Laurens chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she held several offices including historian, matron, chaplain and Queen Esther Star Point.

She was a former member of the West Laurens Homemakers Club and Grange. She was the former secretary and treasurer of the Bennett Cemetery Association, where her husband is buried and she will be interred Friday.

She was also a poll checker at the West Laurens firehouse and a ribbon pinner at the Otsego County Fair. Hers was a simple life, but she was loved by her children and grandchildren, many of whom were at her bedside, holding her hands, in the days before her death. She knew she was loved and never missed an opportunity to return the sentiment.

Lloyd moved from her cherished home nearly three years ago, when she became too ill to live alone. She moved to an assisted-living community called Park Heights, in Rosendale, with her cat, Denver. She moved to the Golden Hills Health Care Center in Kingston several months before her death. She was visited every day by family members.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, John, James, Ralph and David Beck; and three sisters, Charlotte Lanier, Patricia Ferrell and Margaret Flye.

A viewing and Order of the Eastern Star rite will be held Thursday, July 19, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. in Oneonta. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Joe Fiske officiating. Interment will follow at the Bennett Cemetery, just down the road from Lloyd's house on county highway 10.
