Raymond W. Webb

PITTSFIELD — Raymond W. Webb, 80, of Pittsfield, passed away July 25, 2001, in Norwich.

He was born June 22, 1921, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the son of Ernest and Bertha (Ashley) Webb.

He married Vera J. Stratton on Oct. 15, 1944. She predeceased him Nov. 18, 1995.

He spent his childhood in the Ketchum and Pittsfield areas.

He attended the Ketchum School and Morris Central School.

He is survived by his children, Brian and Linda Webb of Richfield Springs, Lenny and Colleen Webb of Hartwick, Leslie Webb of Grafton and Morris L. Webb of New Berlin; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Sidney and Dorothy Webb of Arcadia, Fla.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Charles and Wallace.

He owned and operated Ray's Market in Norwich and was a manager at Matthew's Clothing Store, also in Norwich.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-1943, surviving the Pearl Harbor attack.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 348 in New Berlin.

He enjoyed building bird houses, camping, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, July 29, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler, of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin.

Memorial donations can be made to the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin or the Pittsfield Emergency Squad of New Berlin.

Margaret Thompson

DELHI — Margaret M. Thompson, 88, of Delhi, died unexpectedly Wednesday night, July 25, 2001, upon arrival at O'Connor Hospital.

The daughter of the late Robert and Delia (Shields) Close, she was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Arena, received her education at Margaretville and married Arthur J. Thompson on Dec. 29, 1931, in Delhi. He died Oct. 3, 1977.

A homemaker and lifelong Delaware County resident, Margaret had lived in the Delhi area for more than 70 years and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, its Mary Circle and Craft Club.

Surviving are two sons, George (Patricia) Thompson of Delhi and Roland Thompson of Los Molinas,  Calif.; three daughters, Charlotte (Floyd) Brown of Orchard Park, Janet (Tom) Hager of Arkport and Delia Estramonte of Delhi; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Rose Liddle and Anna Cantwell.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church on Clinton Street in Delhi, with the Rev. Hayden Walsh of Margaretville officiating. Burial will be in the Thompson family plot in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate contributions in Margaret's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice, First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the Donald W. Gleason American Legion Auxiliary of Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet and Son, Delhi.

Margaret Hust

LEXINGTON, Va. — Margaret Scott Hust, 87, of Lexington, Va., and formerly of Unadilla, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lexington, Va.

She was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Rockbridge County, Va., the daughter of Lee and Lilly (Worth)
Scott.

She was a graduate of Lexington High School — Class of 1935 — and received her registered
nurse's degree from the University of  Pennsylvania Nursing School — Class of 1937.

Margaret was married to Dr. Rudolph F. Hust on July 13, 1940, in the Robert E. Lee Chapel of  Washington and Lee University in Lexington. Dr. Hust passed away Feb. 29, 1996.

She had been a resident of Unadilla since 1946, until relocating to Lexington in 1996.

She was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women's Group, the Hospital Guild of The Hospital in Sidney, Unadilla Library Association and the Unadilla Women's Club.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Frederick S. and Patricia Hust of Butler, Pa., and James P. and Martha Hust of Viewtown, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan J. and Nicholas Rosher of Rome, N.Y., and Katherine A. Glick of Lexington, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in October in Unadilla.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. R.F. Hust Scholarship Fund of the Unadilla Community Foundation, the Unadilla United Methodist Church or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Local arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home of Unadilla.

Elsa Barbara Weiss

COOPERSTOWN — Elsa Barbara Weiss, 98, of Cooperstown and formerly of Harrington Park, N.J., died early Thursday morning, July 26, 2001, at The Meadows.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1902, in Radolfzell, Germany (on Lake Constance), a daughter of Albert Weiss, who was born in Germany, and his wife, Maria Banzhaf Weiss, who was born in Gerstetten, Germany.

Elsa was raised and educated in Germany. She immigrated to the United States on Oct. 26, 1926, aboard the vessel "Thuringia" from Hamburg, Germany. Upon her arrival in the United States, she was employed as a children's governess and later as a watch assembler in New York City. In 1995, Elsa moved from Harrington Park, N.J., to Cooperstown.

Of the Protestant faith, her life spanned most of the 20th century.

She is survived by two nephews, Albert K. Weiss and his wife, Christine, of Cooperstown and Fritz Weiss of Harrington Park, N.J.; three grandnieces, Marianne Weiss of Boston, Katherine Weiss of Malibu,  Calif., and Sebine Arden of Moensheim, Germany; and a grandnephew, Juergen Weiss of Korb-Remstal, Germany.

At the request of the family, services and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts can be made to the Activities Fund, care of The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or Friends of Bassett, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Gaylord McFarland

DELHI — Gaylord M. McFarland, 84, of Delhi, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi.

He was born March 22, 1917, in Delhi, the son of Edward and Edna (Paine) McFarland.

Mr. McFarland operated the family dairy farm with his father until 1956; from that time, he enjoyed his work as a carpenter.

He was a member and served as an elder and trustee at United Ministry of Delhi. For 29 years, he served as a tax assessor for the town of Delhi and served as chairman and treasurer of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the Rural Fire District of Delhi.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Carolyn McFarland of Delhi; three nephews and their wives, Wayne and Pamela of Cazenovia, Dan and Michele of York, Pa., and Bruce and Estela of Okinawa, Japan; three great-nephews; and two great-nieces.

A brother, Donald McFarland, predeceased him in 1988.

Graveside services will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi on Friday, July 27, 2001, at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory can be made to United Ministry Church of Delhi or to the Delhi Rural Fire District.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

George Todd

STAMFORD — George Todd, 73, formerly of Stamford, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in Ruskin, Fla.

He was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Stamford, the son of Frank J. and Helen G. (Corbin) Todd.

A Stamford-area businessman, Mr. Todd moved to Florida, where he was in tennis court construction.

Graveside services for Mr. Todd will take place on Monday, July 30, 2001, at Stamford Cemetery at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Lawrence Charles, of Stamford Methodist Church, officiating.

Local arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Hobart.

Edgar R. Lea

DENVER — Edgar Rodgers Lea, 82, died July 21, 2001, after a brief hospitalization at Porter Hospital.

Ed was born March 13, 1919, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was married in Vancouver, British Columbia, after serving as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

As an exploration geologist/professional engineer, he founded some important mineral deposits across the world: British Columbia, New Brunswick and Yukon Territory (Canada); Aguilar, Argentina (South America at 14,000 feet); Mozambique, Africa; Goulburn, Australia; and Balmat-Edwards, N.Y., Darwin,  Calif., and Tucson, Ariz. He ended his career in Denver and continued affiliation with the Masons.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley Arnold Lea, originally from Vancouver; sister, Ann Stuart of Calgary, Canada; a brother, Norman Lea of Olympia, Wash.; children, Laura Noble and Pamela Lea of Richfield Springs, Richard Lea of Parker,  Colo., Daphne Lea-Hemmer of Shrewsbury, Vt., and Diane Aguirre of Denver; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial considerations can be made through Eastern Star Grand Chapter at (303) 759-5936.

Bernard Tarr

COOPERSTOWN — Bernard Davis Tarr Sr., ("Jack"), 73, of 188 Main St. in Cooperstown, died Wednesday evening, July 25, 2001, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown on a day and at a time to be announced.

Friends may call at the Tarr home, 188 Main St. in Cooperstown, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2001, and Sunday, July 29, 2001.

Arrangements are pending under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margaret McElligott

SCRANTON, Pa. — Margaret C. McElligott, 96, formerly of Sidney, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Scranton, Pa., after a long illness. She was the widow of Michael C. McElligott, who died in 1957.

Born in Passaic, N.J., daughter of Adam and Anna Barkus Cashes, she was a graduate of Holy Trinity Business School in Passaic. Before retirement, she was employed by the Scintilla Division of Bendix Corp. in Sidney. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Sidney and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. Robert of Napa,  Calif.; Jerome of Norwich; and David of Watkins Glen; two daughters, Dawn Brennan of Scranton, with whom she resided, and Diane Shutts of Unadilla; a sister, Mary Menzel of Clifton, N.J.; a niece, Ann Flood of Rochester; 35 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Raymund of Sidney and Lee of Newport Beach,  Calif.; four sisters, Ann Phillips of Wallington, N.J., Agnes Clancy of Haverstraw, Frances Steiner of East Orange, N.J., and Helen Pavero of Rutherford, N.J.; and a brother, Joseph of Wallington, N.J.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, with interment at St. Paul's Cemetery in Norwich at 1 p.m.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Bernard Tarr Sr.

COOPERSTOWN — Bernard "Jack" Davis Tarr Sr., 73, of Cooperstown and formerly of Waterloo, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, with his loving family by his side after valiantly battling lung cancer and Crohn's disease.

He was born on June 10, 1928, in Geneva, a son of LeRoy and Ethyl (Davis) Tarr.

Raised in Waterloo, Jack graduated from The Manlius School in Manlius in 1946. He later attended Alfred University, Hobart College and Union College. He married Sarah Jane Bolton of Geneva on March 8, 1956.

His career in electronic data processing spanned four decades. In the 1960s, he installed one of the first IBM mainframe computers in New York state at Sterns Nursery in Geneva for their nationwide mail-order business. From 1973 until 1988, he served as the Otsego County director of data processing in Cooperstown. He retired as Putnam County director of data processing in 1992.

Jack was elected president of the New York State Association of Counties Data Processing Directors and of the New York State Local Government Data Processing Management Association.

Before his data-processing career, he worked at the family business, Tarr's Dairy and Ice Cream Plant, in Seneca Falls. Old-timers in Seneca Falls still say Tarr's ice cream is the best they ever tasted.

An avid sailor, he spent many of his summers on Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake and Otsego Lake, where he enjoyed fishing, riding his motorboat and water skiing. In the winters, he frequently took his children skiing, sledding and ice boating. Jack could also often be seen on the Leatherstocking Golf Course and won two member-guest tournaments and one father-daughter tournament there. In his later years, he was proud to work as a volunteer at the Masters, the U.S. Open and LPGA golf tournaments.

Jack was active in the community as well, serving on the board of directors of Cooperstown's Little Peoples' Theater and as a member of the Otsego Lake Watershed Committee.

Jack will be remembered by his loved ones for his ability to inspire them to climb the highest mountain, follow their dreams and never, ever give up.

He is survived by his wife Sarah (Sally) Bolton Tarr; sons, Andrew Michael Tarr and his wife ,Cara Panzarella-Tarr, of Arlington, Va., Jonathan "Jack" Christian Tarr and his wife, Jennifer, of Willow Spring, N.C., and Bernard "Jake" Davis Tarr Jr. and his wife, Carrington, of  Washington, D.C.; daughters, Susan Bolton Tarr of Chantilly, Va., and Nancy Jane Tarr Wager and her husband, Patrick Wager, of Manhattan; his grandchildren, Valerie Caitlin Tarr of Alexandria, Va., Harrison Andrew Tarr and Hannah Marilyn Tarr of Arlington, Va., Alexandria Davis Tarr and Sterling Martin Tarr of Willow Spring, N.C., Evan Davis Tarr of  Washington, D.C., and Lauren Emily McManus, Sophie Elizabeth McManus and Genevieve Celeste McManus of Chantilly, Va.; a sister, Nancy Tarr Dressing of Pinehurst, N.C.; a cocker spaniel, Abigail, of Cooperstown; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, July 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Tarr home at 188 Main St. in Cooperstown.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Stephen J. Quinlan and the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastors, officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Regional Cancer Center at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, 1676 Sunset Ave, Utica, NY 13502 or the American Cancer Society, 57 Front St., Binghamton, NY 13906-4797.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Milton E. Davis

ASTOR, Fla. — Milton E. Davis, 66, of Astor, Fla., passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2001, in Ocala National Forest in Florida.

Milt was born on May 25, 1935, in Burlington Flats.

He married Janet (Sprague) Davis on March 19, 1955.

His father, Glen Davis; brother, Lyle Davis; and sister, Nadine, predeceased him.

Milt was an avid outdoors person, who loved fishing, golf and anything that allowed him to be outdoors. He was known for his helping hand to all his neighbors and friends. He will be most remembered for being a loving husband, father and grandfather, who always took time to notice and share the little things in life.

He was a lifelong resident of Burlington Flats and Edmeston, where he was a service technician for Curtiss and ABS Breeding Services working with all area farmers until 1991 when he and Janet moved to Astor, Fla., and began working for the Ocala National Forest Services. This allowed him to do what he so loved, working outdoors and Astor was truly his paradise.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Janet Davis of Astor, Fla.; his mother, Elizabeth Fitch, who resides at The Meadows in Cooperstown; son, Michael Davis and wife Pam and three grandchildren, Jonathon and Jennifer of Morris and Janet Dodge and husband George of Sherburne; three daughters, Nadine Wust and husband Charlie and three grandchildren, Mandy, Elizabeth and Mary of Edmeston, Michelle Wust and husband Dick and four grandchildren, Rick, Crystal, Heather and Cara of Edmeston, Karen Lottridge and four grandchildren Janelle Knapp, Justin, Sara and Meghan Lottridge of West Burlington; one great-grandson, Dillon Dodge of Sherburne; a brother, Roger Davis of Burlington Flats and a sister, Elaine Kellogg of Burlington Flats.

A memorial service was held on July 7 in Astor.

There will be a memorial service held in the Burlington Flats Methodist Church at a later date.

Bernice Thompson

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Bernice LaLonde Thompson, 98, of county Route 22, passed away on Friday morning, July 27, 2001, in her home after a long illness.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1903, in Odessa, Minn., daughter of the late James and Emma Mews LaLonde.

Bernice was raised and educated in Watertown.

On Aug. 24, 1919, she married Lyle Mark Thompson in Watertown, a loving and devoted union of 65 years until his passing on March 9, 1985.

A resident of Richfield Springs since 1948, she and her husband had moved here from St. Johnsville. Mrs. Thompson had worked for the Corsos Dress Manufacturing Co. in St. Johnsville, retiring in 1965.

She was a member of the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Bernice will always be remembered as a caring, loving and hopeful person and will be missed by her friends and family.

Surviving are one son, Lyle and his wife, Joan Thompson, with whom she resided in Richfield Springs; a daughter, Regina and her husband, John Miedema, of Reno, Nev.; a ,daughter-in-law Alice Jean Thompson of St. Johnsville; one brother, Charles LaLonde of North Dakota; two sisters, Myrtle Bunting of South Dakota and Gladys Marino of St. Johnsville; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Vernon Thompson in October 2000; three brothers, Percy, James and Melvin LaLonde; three sisters, Selina Longnecker, Florence Bunting and Theresa LaLonde, who died in infancy.

It was Mrs. Thompson's wish that all services and interment be private and at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home of Richfield Springs.
