Allien D. Wenck

ONEONTA — Allien D. Barlow Wenck, 86, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, after an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 6, 1914, the daughter of Dan Clark Barlow and Adda (Mattice) Barlow.

On June 30, 1932, she married Edward W. Wenck Sr. in Oneonta. Mr. Wenck died June 23, 1976.

She was a homemaker, volunteered at the nutrition center at Nader Towers and was a volunteer at Red Cross Blood Drives. She also was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and held several offices.

She enjoyed bingo, crochet and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by three sons, Alfred J. Wenck and wife Jane of Kettery, Maine, Roger H. Wenck and wife Bonnie of Jacksonville, Fla., and Richard L. Wenck of San Antonio,  Texas; a daughter, Barbara A. Greene and husband, Barry of Franklin, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Audrey E. Wenck of Oneonta. She is also survived by two brothers, William M. Barlow and wife Marian of Rensselaer and Kenneth V. Barlow and wife Rose of Kirkville; two sisters, Florence Hauser and husband Joseph of Albany and Ellen B. Brown of Oneonta; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and grandnieces and nephews. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Gerald (Madolyn) Wenck of Oneonta and Robert Wenck of Oneonta; and one sister-in-law, Helen (Linus) Houck of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by a son, Edward W. Wenck Jr.; a sister, Mary Jean Schmitt; and a brother, Dan C. Barlow Jr.

There will be no calling hours.

Mrs. Wenck was cremated and burial will be at Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Lillian F. Johanson

DELHI — Lillian F. Johanson, 89, of Delhi died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at home.

She was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 27, 1911, the daughter of Jennie and Fred Lang.

She graduated from Wadleigh High School and from Hunter College, where she received a bachelor's degree and completed the courses required to take the New York City Teacher's Examination. After a short period of teaching, she changed her profession and worked as credit manager for Simplicity Pattern Co. until she retired and moved to Delhi to join her husband, Edwin, at their beautiful "Maple Shade Farm." Shortly thereafter, her beloved sister, Dorothy Lang, purchased and moved to a home in the village of Delhi.

When Edwin died in 1999, she sold the farm and spent her final years with her sister among good neighbors and friends.

Her sister, Dorothy Lang of Delhi, and several cousins survive her.

Memorial services for Mrs. Johanson will take place on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with Chaplain John Dawson officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory can be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

Carol Desmond

ONEONTA — Carol Ann (Okeefe) Desmond of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held in her memory on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the Mountain View Social Club, 9 River St., at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Judy Thistle officiating.

All friends are welcome.

Irene Decker

HOBART — Irene Anna (Fox) Decker, passed away March 9, 2001.

Committal services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Grant Cemetery in Hobart township.

George L. Sheldon

PIERSTOWN — George L. Sheldon, 76, of Pierstown, died late Friday evening, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1924, in Milford, Conn., a son of George H. and Bertha (Breeze) Sheldon.

He married Veronica  Jones on March 12, 1953, in the town of New Lebanon.

As a young man, George moved with his family from Milford, Conn., to Cherry Valley, where they owned and operated a dairy farm. His father later purchased Miller's Restaurant on Lake Road in Cooperstown where George was employed as a short order cook. It was there that he met his wife, who was employed as a waitress.

Throughout his life George was involved in many businesses, including the buying and selling of hay, selling advertising for the American Dairy Association, as a salesman for Vermeer and as a rural route mail carrier. He later became involved in the buying and selling of tree spades and, for the past 24 years, had been in partnership with his son, Kent, doing business as Sheldon's Tree Service.

George was a member of Cherry Valley Lodge No. 334, Free and Accepted Masons, having been raised a Master Mason in 1948.

He will be remembered as a die-hard Dallas Cowboys football fan and for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Veronica, of Pierstown; a son and daughter-in-law, Kent J. and Mary S. Sheldon of Pierstown; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean S. and Michael Armstrong of Bluemont, Va.; two grandchildren, Bryon Michael Armstrong and Rebecca Lauren Armstrong of Bluemont, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, William L. and Patricia Sheldon of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Irma Renn; and brother, Clair B. ("CB") Sheldon.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating.

A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Brothers of Cherry Valley Lodge No. 334, F&AM as a part of the memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday evening.

George's family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until service time on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

A committal service and burial will be held at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at the Weedsport Rural Cemetery in Weedsport, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Cornell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Weedsport, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Harry W. Robbins

ONEONTA — Harry W. Robbins, 77, of Oneonta, died Sunday morning, Aug. 19, 2001, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Oneonta, the son of Clarence and Mildred (Platt) Robbins.

He married the former Martha Helen Westcott on Nov. 7, 1942, in Oneonta.

Harry had been a telephone splicer for New York Telephone for more than 35 years prior to his retirement.

A lifelong area resident, he was a 1942 graduate of Oneonta High School.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in Germany.

Harry was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Oneonta. He was active and a past exalted ruler of Oneonta Elks BPOE #1312 and had served as a district deputy grand exalted ruler. Harry was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a member of the Oneonta American Legion Post 259 for more than 50 years, as well as a life member of Cooperstown V.F.W.

His hobbies included his love of hunting and ice fishing.

Harry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Robbins; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Russ Archer, Sherry and Austen Asquith, and Debra McTighe and Jack Blanchard; one brother, Art Robbins and his wife, Betty; one sister-in-law, Millie Robbins; six grandchildren, Blaine and Pam Jennings, Scott and Kristy Jennings, Brian and Bret Asquith, Karen Pierce and Christopher McTighe; five great-grandchildren, Kasey Pierce, Katlyn, Tanner and Hunter Jennings and Dylan Mazzaccari. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harry was predeceased by a brother, Howard Robbins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson of Catskill Area Hospice officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, 2001, when the family will be present at the funeral home. A Lodge of Sorrow service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and conducted by Oneonta Elks Lodge 1312.

Oneonta American Legion Post 259 will accord military honors following the funeral service on Wednesday at the West Oneonta Cemetery, West Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Harry W. Robbins.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Marion Briggs

WEST DAVENPORT — Marion Alice Beckwith Briggs, 90, of Prosser Hollow, West Davenport, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born July 16, 1911, in the town of German, Chenango County, the daughter of Berton and Nina (Hallenbeck) Beckwith.

She married Mahlon S. Briggs on Jan. 1, 1935, in  Johnson City. He passed away Dec. 30, 2000.

Mrs. Briggs attended high school and graduated from Oxford Academy in 1929, and Oneonta Normal School (Old Main) in 1935. She taught school for two and a half years at a one-room school in Yaleville, near Guilford.

She and Mahlon moved to Prosser Hollow, where they spent most of 65 years on a farm. She substitute taught at the one-room school in Prosser Hollow.

She belonged to the West Davenport Methodist Church, a member of granges in Davenport and St. Augustine, Fla.

During the summer of college years she worked at the WRC Home in Oxford. She worked at the defense plant on Chestnut Street in Oneonta. Marion was a tax collector, served on the election board for the town of Davenport and was a census taker in 1960.

She and Mahlon owned a home in St. Augustine, Fla., where they spent winters for more than 15 years.

She enjoyed sewing, photography, stamp collecting, camping, bird watching, reading and traveling.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Francis Montgomery of Prosser Hollow; a daughter-in-law, Vernadine Briggs of Prosser Hollow; a son-in-law, Charles Cerosaletti of Davenport Center; a brother, Riley Howe of McDonough; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents and stepfather, James Howe; a daughter, Marilyn Joanne Cerosaletti in 1992; a son, Bernald Leslie Briggs in 1993; a son at birth, John Paul Briggs; a brother, John Beckwith and a brother, Nelson Howe, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Olu Harding officiating at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the West Davenport Methodist Church, care of Barbara Rifenburgh, West Davenport, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Minnie Graunke

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Minnie (Wilhelmina) Graunke, 98, of Cooperstown, and formerly of Sayville, Long Island, died Saturday morning, Aug. 18, 2001, at The Meadows.

Minnie was born on Aug. 13, 1903, in Sayville, Long Island, a daughter of Raymond and Kate (VanVessem) Mulder.

She was married to Albert A. Graunke on Oct. 10, 1925, in St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Sayville. Mr. Graunke died on Dec. 9, 1993.

Raised in Sayville, Minnie was a graduate of the Sayville High School.

For a period of time she was employed as a school teacher and managed the bookkeeping for her husband's garage, West End Service, in Sayville.

In 1993, she and her husband moved to Cooperstown and resided on Delaware Street. In May of this year, she became a resident of The Meadows.

She was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Sayville, and attended the Sayville United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the Vykota Circle.

Minnie is survived by two daughters, Ruth G. Root and her husband, Charles, of Cooperstown and Vera G. Mitchell of Purcellville, Va.; one son, Raymond H. Graunke and his wife, Betty, of Sayville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. M. Lynn Snyder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be private on Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.

Immediately following the funeral service on Sunday afternoon, all attending are invited to join with Minnie's family for a time of refreshment and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326, or to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy Kast

GILBERTSVILLE — Dorothy O'Hara Kast, 80, of Gilbertsville, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at her home in Gilbertsville.

She was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Gilbertsville, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Porter) Harrington.

She was married to Robert Kast for more than 20 years.

She graduated from Mary  Washington College in Virginia.

In her younger years she was a stage actress, having performed with Van  Johnson and Ronald Reagan. She then served as personal secretary to Ann Rockefeller in the Rockefeller Collection and was instrumental in the operations of the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York City.

Dorothy and her husband were very involved in the Gilbertsville Baptist art workshops, and the local historical society.

She was a life member of the Gilbertsville Free Library and was known among her friends to be a very modest and generous person.

Her husband, Robert H. Kast, and his five children survive Dorothy.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Gilbertsville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Randolph Palada and the Rev. Scott Harding officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Cremation was at the Hillington Crematory in Morris, and final resting place will be the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may make contributions to either the Gilbertsville Baptist Church Art Workshops or the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.

Charles A. Ashley

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial service for Dr. Charles Allen Ashley, who died on July 6, 2001, will be held on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. at Christ Church in Cooperstown. A reception will follow in the parish house.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Kenneth S. Colburn

BURLINGTON — Kenneth S. Colburn, 71, of Burlington, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born March 2, 1930, in Burlington, the son of Howard A. and Pearle M. (Hickling) Colburn.

He married Josephine E. Jacobs on Aug. 4, 1951, at the Burlington Flats Methodist Church.

Kenneth retired from the Otsego County Highway Department.

For many years previous, he had been an active farmer and was fondly referred to as the FARMALL Tractor Man.

Kenneth served in the United States Navy from 1948-1950.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed his family, crafts and craft shows.

He also instilled a love of railroads and trains to his children and grandchildren.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 50 years, Josephine; his children, Janice Smith and her friend Nick Costelli of  Pennsylvania, Kenneth S. Colburn Jr. of Missouri, Donna Rowe of Burlington Flats, Rose and her husband, Michael Walton, of New Berlin, and Lois Colburn and her friend Dan Miller of Florida; 12 grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Ruth Miller of Garrattsville, Betty Walitynski of Clearwater, Fla., Donald Colburn of Garrattsville, Wanda Tiffany of West Burlington, Margaret Crumb of Geneva, Edwin Colburn of Garrattsville, Sally Pickens of New Berlin, Jone Lum of Edmeston, and Patty Mahar of Burlington Green.

Kenneth was predeceased by his daughter, Carol Riordan; and his brothers, Cecil, Fay and Howard Colburn.

Graveside memorial services will be held Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at 12:30 p.m. at the Butternut Valley Brick School House Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Highfield officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Kenneth and his daughter Carol Riordan to the Catskill Area Hospice, 541 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
