Bertha Mae Dwight

HOMESTEAD Fla. — Bertha Mae Dwight, 85, born April 28, 1916, in Rumford, Maine, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Fla.

She was the beloved daughter of A.O. Mortenson and Molly Meehan.

At an early age, the family moved to Oswego, N.Y., where she met her husband of 45 years, Carl Dwight; they married on Christmas Eve in 1935. They resided in Binghamton, N.Y., until 1951, when the family moved to Unadilla, N.Y.

Affectionately called "Bee" by her many friends and acquaintances, she was a woman whose endless love and compassion brought peace and warmth to everyone who had the privilege to know her. She was a great soul who gave so much, especially to her family. And while her family was always the focus of Bee's energy, she did find the time to give of herself to her community as well.

She was very active in many local organizations in Unadilla, including the Unadilla Woman's Club, the Unadilla Public Library, the Unadilla Senior Meals Program and was a two-time Cub Scout den mother. Bee was also a rural canvasser for the United Way and the Otsego County Food Stamp outreach.

Bee was loved by many, none more than her family, and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

In her later years she embraced life with a passion like few, and blissfully danced the days away to her favorite music from the Big Band era with her dearest friend, Stanley Jennings Clough.

Bee is predeceased by her husband, Carlton E. Dwight; her twin sister, Kay Rotroff, and her sister, Verna Himes.

She is survived by her four sons, Phil (Debbie) of Unadilla, N.Y., Dexter (Antonia) of Coral Gables, Fla., David of Granville, Ohio, and Arthur of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Taryn, Sean, Lincoln, Steven, Michael, Christopher, Adrienne and Rebecca; and five great-grandchildren, Jesse, Logan, Lucas, Quinn and Brooke.

As was Bee's wish, there will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Donations in loving memory may be made to a worthy charity or civic organization of choice.
