Marion M. Craven

SAN ANTONIO,  Texas — Marion M. Craven, 80, of San Antonio,  Texas, passed away Sept. 13, 2001, in San Antonio,  Texas.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1920, in Cheboygan, Mich., the daughter of Edward McCarthy and Francis Galloway.

She married Clifford J. Craven on Jan. 8, 1943, in Ephrata, Wash.

She was a wife and a mother. She graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse and received a bachelor of science degree from Syracuse University in 1942.

She was a World War II Civil Service clerk typist in the Corps of Engineers.

She was a Welcome Wagon hostess, a real estate saleswoman and an A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Volunteer.

Her interests were oil painting, ceramics, antiques, genealogy and spectator sports.

Marion will always be fondly remembered as a caring and generous lady who will be truly missed by her loving family and many friends.

Marion is survived by her husband, Clifford J. Craven of San Antonio,  Texas; daughters and their husbands, Marion and David Payne of Plano,  Texas, Carolyn and David Hersh of Queensbury, N.Y., Nancy and Ronald Bullock of Aubrey,  Texas, and Constance Craven of Dallas; son, Dean and Angela Craven of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother, Edward O. McCarthy of Drums, Pa.; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Campbell, Barbara Lyons, Brian Payne, Nathan Bullock, Caitlin Bullock and Jacqueline Bullock; and five great-grandchildren.

There will be no public service.

There will be a private service for the family only.

Burial will be in San Antonio,  Texas.

Clarence Jones

 Johnson CITY — The Rev. Clarence E. Jones, 99, of  Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, from the James G.  Johnson Memorial Nursing Home in  Johnson City.

He was born March 12, 1902, in McDonough, the son of Eddie  Jones and Lillie "Mai" (Barrows) Jones.

He married M. Blanche Scaife in Covington, Pa., on Dec. 28, 1927. She died Aug. 27, 1943. On June 25, 1946, he married the Rev. Lillian (Scaife) Burtch in Otego. She died May 27, 1985. Both were the daughters of Thomas Scaife and Martha "May" (Connelly) Scaife.

He was a 1927 graduate of Practical Bible Training School in  Johnson City, and served pastorates at the Baptist churches in Kingsbury, Fernwood, Colosse and Mapleview.

He was engaged in farming in Coventry and also worked at Bendix in Sidney before he began his ministry at the First Christian Church in Otego in 1946.

He was ordained into the gospel ministry while serving at the Otego church through the Tioga River Christian Conference with which the local church was affiliated.

He retired from the Otego pastorate in 1967, after 21 years of service and moved to Afton.

While in Otego he did carpentry and painting around the area. He also worked for 12 years at Practical Bible Training School after moving to Afton and  Johnson City.

He moved to  Johnson City in 1977, and to the Hilltop Retirement Manor in 1992.

He was very active in the work of the Bible Memory Association and served on its council for many years. He was also a member of the board of the Lahore Bible Institute.

The Rev.  Jones joined the Otego church in 1946 and attended Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Vestal, while his health allowed after moving to  Johnson City.

He is survived by four daughters, Kathryn  Jones of Queensbury, Mrs. Carmilla J. Ritchey of Otego, Grace Fabian of Binghamton and Mary Christin (Edward) Macie of New Oxford, Pa.; and a stepson, Bryan (Shirley) Burtch of Denton,  Texas. There are also 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Among other things he will be remembered for his strong faith in God, passion for missions, love of family, work ethic, serving others, sense of humor and love of playing dominoes.

The Rev.  Jones was predeceased by his two wives; a son, John Paul  Jones in October 1928; a daughter, Arloween Keller on May 13, 1969; as well as his five sisters and two brothers.

A celebration of life service will be held at the First Christian Church of Otego on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m., with Dr. David Parsons, pastor at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Vestal, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Stephen J. Miller of the First Christian Church of Otego and the Rev. Jeremy B. Stopford, president of the Tioga River Christian Conference.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 34 River St. in Otego on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, from 3 to 7 p.m., when the family will be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

In lieu of flowers, the Rev.  Jones requested donations be given to the Mission Fund of the Tioga River Christian Conference (TRCC), care of Mrs. C.J. Ritchey, treasurer, 142 Burdick Hill Road, Otego, NY 13825.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes of Oneonta and Otego.

David E. Baker

FLY CREEK — David E. Baker, 60, of Fly Creek, died suddenly at Bassett Healthcare on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001.

He was born in Rochester, son of Gordon and Ina Sybil Baker.

He grew up in Avon, where he graduated from high school. He continued his education at the American School for Craftsmen at Alfred University and also at Syracuse University School of Forestry at Wanakena.

In 1965, he married Mary Jean Scott (Scottie) of East Aurora, and moved to Northville, where he was employed by the New York State Conservation Department as director of all state parks and campgrounds in Hamilton and Fulton counties.

He loved and had a great respect for nature, camping, canoeing, hiking, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed building interior trails and bridges for the DEC, many of which are still being used.

In 1968, he and his wife, Scottie, opened the Schoolhouse Furniture Gallery in the hamlet of Fly Creek where she still resides.

Dave was a strong yet sensitive, generous and courageous man with many talents of which he never boasted. He was an accomplished watercolor artist, woodworker, builder, landscaper, designer and photographer. His passion however, was functional art, the use and restoration of antique canoes and small traditional boats.

He was a voracious reader, researcher and teacher in the field, co-authoring a book "The Old Town Canoe Company: Our First Hundred Years," and guest lecturing at numerous museums and other societies.

He was president of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, which has a membership of more than 2,100 families internationally.

He loved Otsego Lake and did much by example to heighten awareness of the harmony between man and nature.

Though his essence endures, he will be especially missed by Scottie, his wife of 36 years; his mother, Sybil Baker of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown; his brother, Alan of Binghamton: his two children and their spouses, Todd and Cristin Baker of Ithaca and Tina and Andrew Claiborne of Toledo, Ohio: and his granddaughter, Reed Nicole Baker.

There will be no formal calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

Donations in his memory will be gratefully accepted by the Fly Creek Fire Department, Cooperstown Emergency/Squad, Wooden Canoe Heritage Association or the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Association.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Dorothy H. Boyd

FLY CREEK — Dorothy H. Boyd, 87, of Fly Creek, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the home of her grandson, Peter Kinsley, in Ashburnham, Mass.

Dorothy was born in Fly Creek on July 15, 1914, the daughter of Vern and Blanche (Pickens) Harrison.

Dorothy graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1932.

On April 28, 1941, she married Louie C. Boyd Sr. in Chenango Bridge. He predeceased her on Sept. 23, 2000.

Dorothy lived in the area all of her life. She was a homemaker and later she worked for many years at The Farmers' Museum as a guide and as a spinner and weaver. She retired 15 years ago.

She was a member of the Native Daughters of Cooperstown, the Fly Creek Methodist Church and the Fly Creek Historical Association.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Bonnie L. and her husband, Stuart Sharpe of Littleton, Mass., and Elizabeth J. Okerson of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, William V. and Rita Boyd of Ramona,  Calif., and Louie C. Boyd Jr. (Spike) and Joyce of Fly Creek; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, Fly Creek, NY 13337 or to the Fly Creek Historical Association, Fly Creek, NY 13337.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service of Cooperstown and Milford.

Hazel M. Newman

TRAVELER'S REST, S.C. — Hazel M. Newman, 65, of Traveler's Rest, S.C., died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Greenville, S.C.

She was born June 22, 1936, daughter of the late Lester and Gertrude Hinman  Woods in Oxford, N.Y.

Hazel was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and later married Robert F. Newman on Oct. 19, 1957, in Bainbridge, N.Y.

She collected mice and troll dolls. Hazel loved animals and sports.

She enjoyed playing bingo and in her younger days was and an avid bowler.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Robert F. Newman of Traveler's Rest, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Katherine Newman of Unadilla, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Versa and William Swart of Traveler's Rest, S.C.; special family friend, James Gormley of Bainbridge, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Donna  Woods of Afton, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Eric and Jason Swart, Nick Mouzashuili and Matthew, Tyler, Cassidy and Morgan Newman; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Ivan Woods, and two sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie Sanford, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel at 21 Main St. in Sidney, N.Y., with the Rev. Randy Eliason, pastor of the Assembly of God in Sidney, officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Unadilla Youth Sports.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

James D. Kane

UNADILLA — James D. Kane, 65, of Unadilla, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Sidney, the son of the late James O. and Jennie Becker Kane.

On Feb. 20, 1966, he married Beatrice Ward in Unadilla.

Jim was a machinist for the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney for more than 34 years, and he retired in 1998.

He was the former chief of police for the village of Unadilla.

Recently he was a part-time employee for the town of Unadilla and was a driver for Whitaker and Son in Sidney.

He was also a member of the I.&A.M. and A.W. Local 1529 Sidney.

Jim loved all animals, especially his dogs, Lady, Princess and Kissy.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice M. Kane of Unadilla; three daughters, Elizabeth, Deborah and Mary Ellen, all of Oneonta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Frances Kane of Unadilla, William and Joanne Kane of Unadilla and Willis and Leona Kane of Arizona; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Mahlon Young of Unadilla; one aunt; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Becky, and two sisters, Mary McCoon and Annabelle Backus, predeceased Mr. Kane.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel at 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney. Friends are invited to call from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Unadilla Emergency Squad if desired.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. of Sidney.

Julia M. Skramko

GEORGETOWN — Julia M. Skramko, 69, of Lebanon Road, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

Born Aug. 17, 1932, in Little Falls, she was a daughter of Marvin and Anna Sweet Reynolds, and attended local schools.

Julia was united in marriage to Daniel D. Skramko in 1950 in Richfield Springs.

She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in the operation of their dairy farm.

Surviving are her husband, Dan; her mother, Anna Reynolds of Morrisville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marcia and Patrick Kelley of North Syracuse, Sharon and Steven Kane of Richfield Springs and Carol Malone of Decatur, Ind.; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel R. and Julie Skramko of Georgetown; her grandchildren, Shari and Kerry Crane of Richfield Springs, Steve Jr. and Shawn Kane of Richfield Springs, Robert III and Tara Malone of Decatur, Ind., and Megan Skramko of Georgetown; and one great-grandchild, Brandon Kane.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sheila.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, from the Barker-Burgess Funeral Home on Cedar Street in Morrisville.

Burial will be private in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Richfield Springs.

Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Georgetown Ambulance Squad or the Georgetown Fire Department, Georgetown, NY 13072.

Paul Douglas Nosal

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Dr. Paul Douglas Nosal, 52, of 819 Evergreen Drive, Stevens Point, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Sept. 14, 2001, at his home.

Paul was born July 4, 1949, in Bethpage, N.Y. He is the son of Paul and Jane Lee (Tatum) Nosal of Bethpage.

He graduated high school from Plainedge High School in 1966. He attended Purdue University, where he graduated with highest honors with a master's degree in electrical engineering in 1970.

He married Dorie Newmark on May 5, 1974, in Florham Park, N.J.

He then worked for Bell Laboratories on the SAFEGUARD Antiballistic Missiles Systems and electrical switching systems until 1977.

He then attended Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine at the University of Illinois, receiving his doctor of medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in the otolaryngology, head and neck surgery department at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Nosal then served as senior attending physician in otolaryngology department at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y., from 1986 to 1998.

He was currently on the medical staff at Rice Medical Clinic in Stevens Point, in the otolaryngology department, St. Michaels Hospital in Stevens Point, serving on the department of surgery, and Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids in the otolaryngology department.

Dr. Nosal was a member of the Fellowship-American Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and the Wisconsin Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

He was currently serving on the Riverview Hospital Pharmacy Committee and Surgical Clinical Services, along with St. Michaels Hospital's Ambulatory Surgery Committee and Utilization Advisory Committee. He was the department head of Otolaryngology at the Rice Medical Clinic for the year 2001.

Paul loved to share his wide range of knowledge with everyone, especially his two daughters, Amy and Kathleen.

He had many interests and hobbies. He and his father built an RV-4 aircraft in his garage in Cooperstown. After visiting the EAA show in Oshkosh, he ordered plans for a new plane and was excited to begin construction.

He also played hockey on the Stevens Point Classic League and the Wisconsin Rapids Men's League. He built a rink, with full size boards, lights and scoreboard in his back yard so that he could share his love of hockey with his daughters.

Paul enjoyed taking his family on many memorable adventures. He will always be remembered for his creative sense of humor and his enthusiasm for life, doing everything in at 150 percent, going 150 mph.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorie, of Stevens Point; two daughters, Amy and Kathleen, at home; parents, Paul and Jane Lee Nosal of Bethpage; one uncle, Patrick Meyer of Belleville, Ill; and many other family members in New Jersey, Nebraska and Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name for the Central Wisconsin Youth Sports Complex/Portage County Youth on Ice New Rink Development, will be established. Memorials in his name may be sent directly to Central Wisconsin Youth Sports Complex, P.O. Box 962, Stevens Point, WI 54481.

Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peters Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert Schaller officiating.

Visitation at the church 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday morning.

Burial will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home.
