Norvelle Lopienski

SELKIRK — L. Norvelle (Benjamin) Lopienski, 78, of Selkirk, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany.

Norvelle was born in Oneonta, and has lived in Hamlin, Pa., Binghamton and in the Ravena-Selkirk area for 50 years.

She was a hairdresser in Oneonta and had worked at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta as a nurse's aide.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Thaddeus J. Lopienski of Selkirk; loving children, Norvelle, Thaddius Jr. and his wife, Pam, Stephen and his wife, Carole, and Michael and his wife, Nancy, Lopienski. She also is survived by her brother, Floyd Willard Benjamin of Scranton, Pa.; two nieces, Connie and Florence; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was predeceased by her brother and sister, Aline and Raymond Benjamin.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Babcock Funeral Home, 19 Pulver Ave., Ravena, N.Y. 12143. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Norvelle may be made to the Ravena Evangelical Church, 200 Main St., Ravena, NY 12143 or to the South Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 65 Willowbrook Ave., South Bethlehem, NY 12161.

Roger A. Coleman

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Roger Albert Coleman Sr., 61, died of leukemia Oct. 15, 2001, at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

Mr. Coleman, a native son of Cooperstown, N.Y., was born Jan. 13, 1940.

After graduating from Cooperstown High School in 1957, he served in the United States Air Force for four years. Following his service in the Air Force, he returned to Cooperstown and married Carol Ann Johnston.

The Colemans moved to Maryland after their marriage. They were looking forward to their 38th wedding anniversary.

Roger recently retired from a distinguished career at the National Security Agency.

He enjoyed his family, many friends and neighbors. Roger touched everyone around him with kindness and understanding. His laughter and enthusiasm were infectious. He will be missed by all.

His two sisters, Josephine Taugher and Jane Reich, preceded him in death.

In addition to his wife; his son, Roger Coleman Jr. of Odenton, Md., and his special friend, Diane Dowell; his daughters and their husbands, Heather and Steven King of Yorktown, Va., and Tracy and Bill Wilson of Odenton, Md.; as well as six grandchildren survive him.

Roger's extended family in Cooperstown remained close to his heart and included his brother, Chuck and Delores Coleman of Cooperstown; and his sister, Morganna and Mike Garbera of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; and a long list of relatives.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Home, 1 Second Ave. SW in Glen Burnie, Md.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, 1690 Riedel Rd., in Crofton, Md. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md.

Daniel Tucker

DELANCEY — Daniel Tucker, 42, of DeLancey, died at home Monday, Oct. 15, 2001.

He was born July 21, 1959, in Albany, the son of Howard and Mary (Donato) Tucker.

He was a devoted husband to Suzanne (Collins) Tucker and loving father of Connor Tucker and Danielle Tucker at home.

Daniel and Suzanne were married Aug. 15, 1987, in Montour Falls.

His mother, Mary Tucker; two sisters, Maryellen Hamilton and Kathleen Smith; five brothers, Stephen, Howard J., Richard, Allen and Edward; and 21 nieces and nephews also survive him.

His father, Howard, predeceased him.

Dan was a graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi.

He was a beautiful person who embraced life fully and was cherished by many.

He was self-employed as a master craftsman and as such shared his gift with his clients, many of whom became his friends.

A celebration of Dan's life will take place at Bob Cat Ski Center, Gladstone Hollow, Andes on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

A reception will follow immediately.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Andes Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice would be appreciated.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Peter Tessitore

SCHENEVUS — Peter Tessitore, 88, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

He was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Schenevus, the son of Joseph and Anna (Stellata) Tessitore.

Mr. Tessitore was employed with Borden's Milk Plant in Schenevus and was a former member of the C.H. Graham Hose Co. in Schenevus.

Mr. Tessitore was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Miller, in 1986; a daughter, Anna Paris; and a son, Burton Tessitore.

He is survived by a daughter, Margaret and Glen Spear of San Marcos,  Calif.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Ann Catanzano of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Carl and Virginia Tessitore of Schenevus and Joseph and Ann Tessitore of Oneonta; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Frances Hawver of Schenevus.

Calling hours will be held at 10 a.m. till the funeral service time at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home at 25 Arch St. in Schenevus.

Patricia Ann Krebs

MILFORD CENTER — Patricia Ann Krebs, 58, of Milford Center, passed away Oct. 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Oneonta, the daughter of Vivan and Marian (Hoose) Card.

She married Peter J. Krebs on July 1, 1961, in Milford.

Mrs. Krebs had been employed at Ames Department Store for the past seven years and was previously employed at Jamesway for 25 years.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the Portlandville United Methodist Church where she was active with church functions.

She enjoyed gardening at her Milford Center home and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband at home; one daughter, Karen Krebs-Talbot of Otego; and a son, William Krebs of Milford Center; two grandchildren, Courtney Teneyck and Mackenzie Talbot; two stepgrandchildren, Richard Talbot III and Kaylynn Talbot; a sister, Mrs. William (Julie) Card Thomson of Delhi; and three foster sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Minnie) Hungerford of Maryland, Mrs. Charles (Vera) Young of Otego and Mrs. Warren (Mary Jo) Hulbert of Melbourne, Fla.; one brother, Elisher and his wife, Linda Ballard of Glens Falls; and several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski, pastor of the Portlandville United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, when the family will be in attendance.

Contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13807 or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 913 Old Liverpool Rd., Liverpool, NY 13088.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

William G. Cook

FORT PLAIN — Mr. William G. Cook, 84, state Highway 163, Fort Plain, died Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.

Born in Stevens Point, Pa., April 13, 1917, the son of William A. and Maude Bush Cook, he was formerly a dairy farmer in the Salt Springville area.

He was employed as a machine operator at Beechnut, retiring in 1980.

An area resident for most of his life, Mr. Cook was of the Protestant faith.

He was a charter member of the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department.

He married Marion Prime Cook, June 12, 1938, in Fort Plain.

He was predeceased by a sister, Laura Douglas; and three brothers, Lester Cook, Kenneth Cook and Clifford Cook.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Ronald W. Cook and his wife Mable, of Salt Springville; a daughter, Carolyn M. VanAlstine, husband Gordon, East Springfield; a sister, Marian Dingman, VanHornesville; a brother, Richard Cook, East Springfield; two grandchildren, Thomas VanAlstine and Jean Hoke; one stepgrandchild, Daniel Murphy Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held Oct. 11, 2001, at Gray-Hotaling and Smith Funeral Home, Fort Plain, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Burial was at Freysbush Cemetery, Fort Plain.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department, R.D. #3 Box 224, Fort Plain, NY 13339 or Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Arthur Yager

WEST LAURENS — Arthur James Yager, 68, of West Laurens, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Otego, the son of Harold and Florence (Crawford) Yager.

He married Ona B. Heath on May 10, 1952, in Otego.

He was employed as an engineer for the D&H Railroad for more than 30 years.

Art was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors.

The couple had lived in their current home since 1963 and had formerly lived in Otego.

He is survived by his wife, Ona Yager of West Laurens; his mother, Florence Yager of Otego; his four children, Wendy Stevens of Corinth, Maine, Wayne Yager and his wife, Cyndy, of Otego, William Yager and his wife, Rose, and Warren Yager and his wife, Shelly, all of West Laurens; a sister, Delores Heath and her husband, Bert, of Florida; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services at Art's request.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of his family in Evergreen Cemetery in Otego.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to contribute to the Laurens Emergency Squad or the West Laurens First Responder Unit in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Helen Aldrich

FT. MYERS, Fla. — Helen Goodwin Aldrich, 70, of Ft. Myers, Fla., and formerly a longtime area resident, passed away Oct. 15, 2001, at the Lee Memorial Hospital of Ft. Myers.

Born in Guilford, N.Y., on March 6, 1931, Helen was the daughter of Richard H. and Marian (Burlison) Goodwin.

She grew up in the Guilford area, receiving her education in local schools.

On Nov. 19, 1950, in Norwich, Helen married Leon D. Aldrich. For a number of years, Helen and Leon owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Norwich, and were involved in local agricultural and grange activities. Helen was also employed for a time by the Chapman-Turner Co. in Norwich.

In 1964, she and Leon moved to the Hamilton area, again operating a dairy farm. Following the death of her husband in September 1985, Helen moved to the Sidney area and resided there for a number of years before relocating to Florida.

Helen is survived by her son, Edward L. Aldrich of Tulsa, Okla., and his fiancee, Susan Crandall; by her sisters, Nancy Goodwin Morley of Delhi, Lianne Sprague of Guilford and Bonnie Yager of Boonville; by her brother, Richard Goodwin Jr. of Georgetown, Del.; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Helen will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. Arthur Ives of Oxford will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Woodlawn Cemetery of Hamilton. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m.

Willard H. Cotten

SIDNEY CENTER — Willard H. Cotten, 74, of Sidney Center, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at his home.

He was born Dec. 10, 1926, in the town of Meredith, N.Y., the son of Harry and Martha (McAdams) Cotten.

He was married to Altamae Wilson on Sept. 17, 1967, in Seelyville, Pa.

Willard was a resident of Sidney Center since 1965 and was a retired mechanic of the former Laneway Inc. of Oneonta, N.Y.

He was a member of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church and Catskill Mountain Antique Engine and Machinery Club.

Willard is survived by his wife, Altamae Cotten of Sidney Center; his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sue Safford of Sidney Center, Thomas and Emma Safford of Guilford, Douglas and Ruth of Ocala, Fla., Charles Safford of Sidney Center, Carl and Laura Safford of Sidney Center, Leird Cotten of Greene, and Wayne and Cheryl Cotten of Wells Bridge; his daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela and Richard King of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Wilma Bartmess of Aurora,  Colo.; a brother, Irvin Cotten of Florida; 39 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Larnerd.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center, N.Y., with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Sidney Center United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, N.Y., from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, N.Y.

Nan S. Gardiner

BRIDGEPORT — Nan S. Gardiner, 65, of Bridgeport, N.Y., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at University Hospital, Syracuse.

A native of Kingston, she graduated from Kingston High School in 1953.

She received a bachelor of science from the State University College at Oneonta in 1966 and graduate studies for certified school administration at the State University College at Cortland, North Adams State College in North Adams and SUCO.

Mrs. Gardiner retired as elementary school principal and coordinator of curriculum from Franklin Central School.

She was a member of Kappa Pi and the School Administrators of New York.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Joseph S.; two sons Eric S. of Granville and Robert C. of Fayetteville; a sister Sara Shurter Wylde of Kingston; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Eaton-Tubbs-Schepp Funeral Home, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.

Burial will be private.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions for a scholarship in her memory may be sent to Franklin Central School, c/o Mrs. Virginia Blackman, Franklin, NY 13775.

Agnes M. Howland

WALTON — Miss Agnes M. Howland, age 103, formerly of East Brook Road, Walton, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Park Terrace Adult Home in Walton where she had been residing.

She was born March 13, 1898, in Walton to Ray and Anna (McLaury) Howland and was a lifelong Walton resident and homemaker.

Miss Howland is survived by her sister, Janette Howland of Park Terrace Adult Home in Walton, and several cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Ward Howland.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, at the corner of North and Delaware Streets in Walton, where friends may call Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m.

A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Scott Wilkinson of the Walton Reformed Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
