Dennis F. Doroski

HOBART — Dennis F. Doroski, 45, of Coventry, passed away at home after a brief illness.

He was born in Stamford on Dec. 19, 1955, the son of Fred and Beulah Doroski.

Dennis is survived by his mother; sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Charles Key Jr.; brother, Robert Doroski; nephews, Christopher and Jason Key and families, all of Stamford.

His father predeceased him on March 7, 1996.

Graveside services will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford, on Nov. 6, 2001, at 2 p.m., with Fr. Anthony Ligato officiating.

In his memory contributions may be made to the organization or charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Roy E. Olsen

SIDNEY CENTER — Roy E. Olsen, 61 years, of Sidney Center, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 17, 1939, in North Bergen, N.J., the son of Edward W. and Ida (Stroh) Olsen.

He married Margaret Nagle on Dec. 29, 1961, in Jersey City, N.J.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Berlin Wall Crisis.

Roy was self-employed. He cleaned and installed beer lines.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Olsen of Sidney Center; one daughter, Gail Ambrose of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sons, James Olsen of Sidney Center and Eric Olsen of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren, Brian Ambrose of Indianapolis, Ind., and Morgan Olsen of Indianapolis, Ind.; and two sisters, Elaine Cistaro of Florida and Joy Sensakovic of West Long Branch, Fla.

Roy was predeceased by a brother, Barry Olsen.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., 102 Delaware St., Walton.

There will be no funeral services.

Funeral arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., Walton.

Gerald M. Crandall

ONEONTA — Gerald Marley Crandall, 76, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Oneonta on Feb. 3, 1925, the son of LeRoy and Helena (Donlin) Crandall.

He married Joan Misner on Aug. 19, 1956, in Sidney.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to the 49th Antiaircraft Artillery Brigade, 132nd Gun Battalion. He served in Scotland, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland and Germany. He saw combat in Normandy, the Central Theater and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

Because of his mother's birthright, Gerry was proud to hold citizenship both in Ireland and the United States.

Gerry was employed for 37 years at ECD Bendix, and retired in 1982 as a supervisor in the internal audit department.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, and a past president of its former Holy Name Society. He served for several years as the chairman of the Diocesan Bishop's Fund representing St. Mary's Church.

He was involved in the Boy Scouts, and served as an institutional representative.

He was an avid bird watcher, and especially enjoyed the summer vacations with his family spent at Gilbert Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan M. Crandall of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Maureen and William Decker of Athol, Mass., Kathleen and Theodore Bailey of Oneonta, Colleen and John Clune of Oneonta, Eileen Crandall of Phoenix, Ariz., Darleen and Randy Bussy of Indianapolis, Ind., Charleen and George Parslow of Portlandville, and Michael and Kim Crandall of Lancaster, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Hope and Bill Meyer of Sidney; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Mary's School Building Fund or the American Lung Association.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marion Page

HOBART — Marion Page, 73, a resident of the Hearthstone, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in Hobart.

She was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Cohoes, the daughter of William and Winifred (Kennedy) Page.

Miss Page worked as a secretary for a newspaper in Cohoes for many years.

A quiet pleasant lady, she will be missed by her friends at the Hearthstone.

Two sisters, Winifred Rullo of San Antonio,  Texas, and Marion Volpe of Valley Stream, survive her.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with Louise Evans officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Oscar E. Howe

OXFORD — Oscar E. Howe passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

He was born April 7, 1925, son of Elmer A. Howe and Josie Buchanon Howe in Pepacton.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He spent most of his life in the Sidney Center and Unadilla area.

He worked most of his life in the construction business, and worked at Bendix for a few years.

He loved to camp, fish and hunt.

Oscar loved his family dearly and loved to have them around as well as his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include Gladys Bartlett, beloved companion; sons, Ron and Cyndy Howe of Locke, Rick and Kim Howe of Venice Center; daughters, Kathleen and Chet Carr of Bainbridge, Janice and John Harrison of West Laurens; JoAnna and Richard Lata of Reidsville, N.C., and Dolores Howe and fiance Rick Davis of Endicott; sisters, Myrtle and Kenneth Kinne, Ruth and Richard Bristol, and Isabelle Cawley, all of Sidney Center, Marjorie and Clifton Steele of Florida; brothers, Kenneth and Charlene Howe of Masonville and Jesse and Rose Howe of Harpursville. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

He was predeceased by Sarah Howe Earle wife and mother of his children; a brother, Raymond Howe; sister, Helen Bristol and an infant sister, Clarisse.

As per Oscar's request there will be no funeral services.

He will be cremated and laid to rest at a later date.

A celebration of Oscar's life will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the West Laurens Fire House, West Laurens, when family will be in attendance.

Because of his love for children any expression of sympathy can be made payable to Upstate Home for Children and mailed care of Jan Harrison, 2795 State Highway 23, West Oneonta, NY 13861.

Arrangements by the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.

Betty L. Demarest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Betty L. Demarest, 73, died peacefully while sleeping on Nov. 1, 2001, following a long illness.

Mrs. Demarest was born to Wanda and Joseph Lash of  Jefferson, N.Y., where she was raised, schooled and eventually married C. Donald Demarest in 1947. The couple settled in the nearby village of Stamford where their two sons were born. After the boys were raised through childhood, Mrs. Demarest worked for many years at the Hoy Insurance Agency in Hobart, N.Y.

The family moved to Bradenton, Fla., in 1974. where Mrs. Demarest enjoyed many happy times on the links and at the bridge tables of the Bradenton Country Club.

Betty will be remembered as a gifted hostess whose hospitality was regularly enjoyed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her two sons, John A. of Valrico, Fla., and James J. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren; and her sister, Wanda of Eagle, Idaho.

Dorothy Carley

MILFORD — Dorothy Anne (Wood) Carley died Nov. 1, 2001.

She was born Nov. 20, 1921, to Alta (Nichols) and Walter Wood.

Dottie was predeceased by her son, Paul Frederick (Fred) Carley II; and a sister, Myrtle Mohoney.

She is survived by Anne and Tom Seward (daughter and son-in-law); Joan Carley (daughter-in-law); seven grandchildren, Stacy, JL, Rachel, Paul Frederick III (Goobie), Mathew, Nicole and Erica; eight great-grandchildren; Doris and Lee Oliver (sister and brother-in-law); Hilton and Ann Wood (brother and sister-in-law); Marie Fleischer (sister): and nieces and nephews.

There was a memorial service for Dottie on Tuesday at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Ethel Y. Briggs

MARYLAND — Mrs. Ethel Y. Briggs, 91, of Goodyear Lake, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the home of her sister, Louise Butler, with her family by her side.

She was born Nov. 11, 1909, in Jordanville, the daughter of George and Mary (Crim) Yule.

Ethel graduated from Richfield Springs Central School in the Class of 1927. After teaching for three years she then went to Oneonta Normal School and graduated from there in 1933. She later went on and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Ethel married Arthur C. Briggs on June 16, 1935. Mr. Briggs predeceased her on Feb. 1, 1994.

Ethel taught at the Orendorf Corners one-room school house near Jordanville. She also taught at Davenport Center, West Oneonta, and later at the Oneonta Greater Plains school until her retirement.

Ethel enjoyed crocheting and cooking for her friends and family. She enjoyed spending time with her family when they came in from Alaska.

She was a member of the Jordanville Federated Church of Jordanville and attended the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kay Briggs of Palmer, Alaska; two sisters, Louise Butler of Oneonta and Edna Smith of Jordanville; one brother, Donald Yule of Ocala, Fla.; three granddaughters, Cinthia Ward of Homer, Alaska, Susan Hubbard of Homer, Alaska, and Sharon  Jackson of Wasilla, Alaska; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ethel was predeceased by her only son, Dale A. Briggs on May 25, 1969, in Palmer, Alaska; her only grandson, Richard D. Briggs on Dec. 1, 1991; one sister, Esther Moyer; and two brothers, Robert Yule and Curtis Yule.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will be present at the funeral home on Friday evening, Nov. 9, 2001, from 7 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Those who wish may make contributions to Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, Leatherstocking Region Branch, P.O. Box 1364, Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Ethel Y. Briggs.

Alfred A. Migli

HOBART — Alfred A. "Connie" Migli, 85, of Hobart, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, in Hobart.

He was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Avon, Conn., the son of Severino and Rosa (Cazza) Migli.

He was married to Joanna "Jennie" Cimelli for 63 years. They were married in 1938.

Connie came to Hobart in 1936, where he was an outstanding farmer for more than 50 years and his pride in farming was evident in the farm. His farm animals were an integral part of his life, however, and he was especially fond of his horse "Trigger" and the rides they took.

Mr. Migli is survived by his wife, Jennie at home in Hobart; a daughter, Barbara and Joel Kaufman, Queens; three sons, Jerry and Nadine Migli, North Carolina, James and Theresa Migli, Northville, and Frank and Harriet Migli, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren who knew him as "Pop," Aaron, John, Scott, Jean, Shannon, Frankie, Gina, Bobby, Isaac, Verna; and five great-grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, Jordan, Bryce and Nicholas.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with Fr. Edward Ryan celebrating Mass. Calling hours will be on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Francis J. Hunt

COOPERSTOWN — A memorial Mass for Francis J. Hunt of Cooperstown and formerly of Valley Stream, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John Rosson, pastor, officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Richard E. Grow

SIDNEY — Richard E. Grow, 74, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born May 17, 1927, son of the late Ellwood and Josephine Marnell Grow in Binghamton.

Richard served his country in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged.

He retired as a tool maker for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney.

Mr. Grow was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post #183, Sidney, and the VFW Corporal R.H. Arrandale Post #7914, Sidney.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Debra Grow, Endicott, Tim and Patricia Grow, Bainbridge, and Richard Grow, Sidney; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandi and William Thoms, Triangle, Va., Terri and Michael Boulay, Otego, and Annette and Randy Mertz, Sidney; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m. Visitation will begin at noon on Saturday. Burial with military honors will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
