Charles Blackert

EAST WORCESTER — Charles Maynard Blackert Sr. died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in his East Worcester home, where he had lived since 1988.

He was born May 21, 1921, to Margaret Esmay Blackert of East Worcester and Carl (Charles) G.J. Blackert, originally of Hessen-Kassel, Germany. Mr. Blackert maintained close ties to this area through friends and family, notably his mother and brother, Claude Justice Blackert, who lived full time in East Worcester from 1969 until their deaths.

Mr. Blackert served in the U.S. Army during World War II, supporting and entertaining troops in a number of Army bands and serving in Okinawa in 1945.

In April 1947, he married Rose Marie Ferraro, with whom he raised three children in Bogota, N.J.

He loved and played Dixieland and big band music, performing on the clarinet and alto and baritone saxophones from the time he was 8 years old, often at venues around Otsego County. He continued to play professionally with his own band, The Windjammers, through the 1960s, in clubs in northern New Jersey and New York, including the Stork Club in New York City.

Surviving Mr. Blackert are two daughters, Virginia Rose Blackert, recently of East Worcester, and Margaret Elena Blackert of York, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Maynard Jr. and Ingrid Blackert of Delaware Water Gap, Pa.; and a granddaughter, Dr. Hilary Jane Englert of Union City, N.J.; as well as many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

Calling hours will be at E.J. Skinner Funeral Chapel in Worcester this evening, Dec. 3, 2001, from 7 to 9 and Tuesday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on Main Street in Worcester, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Burial will follow at the Esmay/Blackert family plot in the East Worcester Lower Cemetery on state Highway 7.

With sincere thanks, his family requests that donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Domingo Cubelo

ANDES — Domingo Cubelo Jr., 60, of Andes passed away Nov. 28, 2001, at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

He was born Sept. 26, 1941, in New York City, the son of Domingo Cubelo and Bibiano Olondo.

He was single. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1963-64.

He was retired. He was disabled because of health reasons.

He was a former resident of New York City and presently lived in Mount Tremper.

He is survived by his mother, Bibiana Cubelo of Andes; one brother, Robert Cubelo of Andes; two nieces, Kathy and Debra; and two nephews, Brian and Robert S.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Francis DeSales Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

George A. Smith

ONEONTA — George A. Smith, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Susquehanna, Pa., the son of John C. and Eva (Markle) Smith.

George was a 1935 graduate of Oneonta High School.

He married Rachel H.F. Sobers on Feb. 24, 1940, in Sidney. Mrs. Smith predeceased him on Oct. 8, 1996.

George worked for Bendix-Scintilla as a machinist from 1942 until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, a long-term member of the Oneonta Eagles Club No. 1260 and the Sidney Moose Club. He was also a member of the Sixth Ward Booster Club.

George was an avid card player and enjoyed going to the Eagles and Booster clubs to play cards with his buddies.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, George R. and Delores Smith of Maryland and James F. and Patricia Smith of Catskill; nine grandchildren and their spouses, George RJ and Deanne Smith, Christopher Smith, Michael Smith, Stephanie and Timothy Laymon, David E. Smith, Shawn Smith, Patrick Smith, Jason Smith and Jacquelyn Stephens; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Norma Sobers of Oneonta, Edna Sobers of Oneonta, Aurilla Stringer of Tallahassee, Fla., and Carl A. Puylara of Oneonta; an uncle, Delmar Markle of Vestal; cousins, Pauline Lucey of Vestal, Robert Wendell of Binghamton and Thomas Lyden of Susquehanna, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by one granddaughter; two brothers, John and Richard Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Carl Sobers, Evelyn and Ralph Cornell, Lynn Stringer and Sophia Puylara.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul A. Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of George A. Smith.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Barbara Woods

CANAJOHARIE — Mrs. Barbara Ann Jaeger Woods, 65, of Canajoharie, died Thursday afternoon, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1936, in Yonkers, a daughter of Charles and Ida Jaeger.

She married John P.  Woods Jr. on Sept. 7, 1957, in Yonkers.

Mrs.  Woods grew up in Yonkers, where she graduated from Commerce High School.

Following her marriage, she devoted her life to her husband and their family.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, John P.  Woods Jr., of Canajoharie; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth Ann and Michael Hutcherson of Cooperstown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Kathleen  Woods and Eric and Andrea Woods, all of Canajoharie, and John P.  Woods III and his wife, Kelly, of Bronxville; seven grandchildren; two brothers; six sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

The Office of the Burial of the Dead with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist was privately held on Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 2001, at Christ Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Tribute Fund at Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

George A. Smith

ONEONTA — George A. Smith, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his residence.

Clifford Palmatier

WALTON — Clifford J. Palmatier, 79, of 208 Windfall Road, Walton, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City.

He was born on July 5, 1922, in Masonville, the son of the late George and Nellie (Littlebrant) Palmatier.

On Aug. 17, 1946, he married Susan Schultes, who survives.

Besides his wife of 55 years, Susan, he is survived by his sons, Clifford Palmatier Jr. of Lake Placid, Fla., Edward Palmatier, David Palmatier and Larry Palmatier, all of Walton; his daughters, Carolyn Vandermark of Bainbridge, Joyce Stanton of Walton, Barbara Rogers of London, Ky., Ruth McDermont of Bainbridge, Jean Jose' of Old Bridge, N.J., and Linda Palmatier of Bainbridge; his stepchildren, James Gordon of Schenectady, Charlotte  Jones of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Shirley Sherman of Corbin, Ky.

He is also survived by 29 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Cliff was the highway superintendent for the Town of Tompkins for 211/2 years. Before his job with the town, he worked in construction for Jess Howes and others.

He loved to hunt, fish and boat in his early years. Most recently he enjoyed going to antique engine shows and restoring the engines.

He was a charter member of the Trout Creek Fire Department.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Masonville Cemetery, Masonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trout Creek Fire Department or the Trout Creek Emergency Squad.

Jailyn E. Kroll

ONEONTA — Jailyn E. Kroll of Oneonta, 3-month-old daughter of Corinn Parsons and Philip Kroll, died unexpectedly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on Dec. 1, 2001.

She was born Sept. 6, 2001, in Oneonta.

She is survived by her parents; two sisters,  Taylor and Alyza Kroll at home; her maternal grandparents, Dennis and Donna Parsons of Oneonta; paternal grandparents, Ernest Kroll of Otego and Charlene O'Mara of North Carolina; maternal great-grandmothers, Josephene Parsons and Elizabeth Mattice of Oneonta; and paternal great-grandparents, Ann Kroll of Florida and Ruth Schultz of Franklin.

Private funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Mitchell Spring, pastor of the Spirit and Truth Christian Assembly Church of West Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Priscilla Thomas

WEST ONEONTA — Priscilla Lydia Thomas, 58 years, of West Oneonta, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

She was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Whitestone, the daughter of George and Eleanor (Smith) Heaver.

Priscilla attended and was very active in the West Oneonta Baptist Church and had been a Sunday school teacher.

She was an avid bowler having bowled in many leagues.

She enjoyed arts and crafts and sewing and was a wonderful cake decorator.

Priscilla was a wonderful daughter, sister and mother who devoted her life to her daughter and will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her mother, Eleanor Watson of The Meadows; her daughter, Carol Ann Bernstein of Oneonta; four brothers, George Heaver of Center Reach, Long Island, Allen Heaver of Binghamton, John and Michelle Watson of Chenango Forks, Robert and Tania Watson of Binghamton; one sister, Ellen and John Cobb of Morris; nieces and nephews, Kimberly Lee, Vanessa and Sean Heaver, Laural, Krista, Caden, Callie and Colton Watson, Adrianna and Alex Watson, and Tara and Latisha Cobb; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. until service time, with funeral and committal services on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the West Oneonta Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Marguerite Rosser

MCDONOUGH — Marguerite E. Rosser, 88, of Walden Road, McDonough, and formerly of Golden Age Apartments, Norwich, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born in Boston, Mass., Marguerite grew up in the Boston area. In 1946, she moved to Morris, then lived in Greene during the early 1960s. She resided in Norwich for a brief time before moving to McDonough 10 years ago, to make her home with her daughter.

Marguerite was born on Aug. 5, 1913, in Boston, the daughter of Leopold and Elizabeth (Weir) Morse.

Her husband, James Rosser, passed away on March 31, 1987, after 56 years of marriage.

Marguerite is survived by her children, Linda Rhodes of McDonough, Patricia Toth and husband, Frank, of Laurens, James Rosser of Spokane, Wash., and David Rosser of California; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marguerite was predeceased by her children, Robert Rosser and Betty Jane Miller; and also by several sisters and brothers.

Funeral and interment services will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McDonough Emergency Squad, McDonough, NY 13801.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, Norwich.

Madeline E. Cook

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Madeline E. Cook, 85, of Cherry Valley, passed away at her son's home on Dec. 1, 2001.

She was born Oct. 28, 1916, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Henry and Marion (Segelken) Ennis.

On May 29, 1948, she married Austin MacIntyre Cook in Garden City, Long Island. He predeceased her.

Madeline attended New York City College and received her degree in English.

Mr. and Mrs. Cook were area farmers in Cherry Valley.

Mrs. Cook worked as an editor for the Beech-Nut News. She was a substitute teacher for area schools and director for Fulton and Montgomery County Community Center. She also was a copy editor and proofreader for Simon and Schuster and Doubleday Publishing companies for most of her life.

She was of the Lutheran denomination and was well-loved in the community.

Survivors include her son, Bruce C. Cook and his wife, Tina M. Cook, of Cherry Valley; and a granddaughter, Lindsay M. Cook.

Private graveside services will be held at Albany Rural Cemetery.

Contributions in Mrs. Cook's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Arlene Fairbairn

SMYRNA — Arlene Frances Mary Fairbairn, 66, of Curncross Road, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

She was born in Arena on April 2, 1935, a daughter of the late Ellsworth Frederick and Buelah Bronson Kittle and attended local schools.

Arlene was united in marriage to Herman O. Fairbairn. He predeceased her in 1982.

She attended the Smyrna United Methodist Church and was active in the Smyrna Grange.

Surviving are her children, Larry and Donna Kittle of Bainbridge, Randy and Gloria Fairbairn of Smyrna, Victor and Diane Fairbairn of Harpersfield, Alan and Jennifer Fairbairn of Roxbury, Tammy and Raymond Hayes of South Kortright; a sister, Bessie Balcom of Dunhaven; 16 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Marguerite Lane of Margaretville; and her cousin and best friend, Marie Jaikin of Stratford.

She was predeceased by her companion, Glenn Ackerley.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Burgess Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Friends are invited and may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
